'Five-second rule' and other myths busted Do you know fact or fiction when it comes to food safety? Council’s Environmental Health team has been raising awareness for Australian Food Safety Week from 8 to 15 November. Staff have been quizzing community members on common food safety furphies at the Civic Centre, covering everything from the “five-second rule” to refreezing defrosted meat. “The five-second rule just isn’t true – bacteria don’t have a stopwatch and wait before contaminating your food,” Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said. “An estimated 4.1 million people will get food poisoning in Australia each year and the focus of Australian Food Safety Week was to bust some of these myths. “For example, did you know that if you get food poisoning it may not have been the last thing you ate? Sometimes symptoms can take several hours or days to appear.” For further information on food related matters, please contact Council’s Environmental Health Officers on 1300 292 442.

Works planned for roads across LGA Council has announced its 2015/16 rehabilitation and resheet programs, with works under way now. It follows last week’s release of the $1M urban reseal program, which will see improvements to 200,000sqm across 71 different sections of road. Unlike reseal works, a rehabilitation project involves working on the structure of the road beneath the tar, to a certain depth depending on the pavement design. The road is then resealed to produce a high quality surface. Along with the nine roads in the provisional pavement rehabilitation program, Council has scheduled $1.4M worth of resheet works on 40km of its unsealed road network.

FOOD SAFETY TIPS

• Clean: wash hands with running water and soap then dry hands thoroughly before starting to cook and after handling raw meat or chicken. • Chill: transport your chilled or frozen food home from the shops in a cooler bag or esky. Use a fridge thermometer to make sure your fridge is running at or below 5 degrees. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Cooked food should be stored in covered containers and either put in the fridge to cool, or frozen immediately. Frozen foods should be defrosted in the fridge or microwave not on the kitchen bench • Cook: cook chicken, minced or boned meats, hamburger, stuffed meats and sausages right through until they reach 75 degrees using a meat thermometer. Serve hot food steaming hot above 60 degrees. Always follow cooking instructions on packaged foods. • Separate: food should be stored in covered containers in the fridge and put raw meats and poultry in the bottom of the fridge so the juices don’t contaminate food on lower shelves. Don’t put cooked meat back on the plate the raw meat was on.

Last chance to hear Dame Gilmore's voice

You can hear history first hand at the 150 Years of Dame Mary Gilmore: Dreaming of Newer Note exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina. As a tribute to the iconic poet, historian, educator and activist, this exhibition now includes a recording of the Dame reading selections of her poetry in her own voice. Featuring recollections of both the everyday and the extraordinary from her book Old Days: Old Ways, many of these thought-provoking, moving memories are set in and around the Wagga Wagga district. This exhibition, curated by Maree Brassil will be on display at the Historic Council Chambers site until 22 November.

Learn about proposed SRV at forum

A community forum on a proposed Special Rate Variation (SRV) to fund the levee upgrade will be held on Wednesday 18 November in the Council meeting room from 6pm. Residents will be able to join the discussion on the proposed SRV and find out more about the levee upgrade project.

Monday 9 November marked 101 years since a ferocious battle between the HMAS Sydney, whose mast stands tall in the Victory Memorial Gardens, and German raider the SMS Emden. It was Australia’s first naval victory at sea and the Museum of the Riverina currently has rare artefacts from it on display. Time is running out to see history come to life in the National Maritime

Museum’s War at Sea: The Navy during WWI exhibition at the Historic Council Chambers. The exhibition, which closes on 22 November, features Australian Captain Glossop’s original hand-written account of the battle, a sweetheart trinket made from a piece of the wreck of the Emden, a tin toy boat replica of the Emden and more interesting artefacts.

Have a drink with Jane Austen Would you like to go drinking with Jane Austen? You are cordially invited to join culinary historian Richard Foss, direct from California, when he stops in the fair city of Wagga Wagga during his railway tour of Australia. Mr Foss will deliver an hour-long talk on what refreshments, both alcoholic and non-intoxicating, were enjoyed in 1800s England, and how Jane Austen indicated the personality of her characters from the things they chose to drink or serve. Various beverages made from authentic Austen-era recipes will be on offer, along with a light supper. Wagga Wagga City Library and the Civic Theatre have partnered for the 9 December event, which will be held at the theatre at a cost of $30 per ticket. Please book your spot before 7 December by calling 6926 9688 or online at civictheatre.com.au.

There has been community concern over Council’s liability re: the hangar at the airport. Some people have

wrongly claimed that Council and ratepayers have lost $2.1M after the owners went into voluntary administration. This is not the case. The loan provided to the previous owners has been revoked and Council now owns this asset. It will be leased at commercial rates.

Nominate a local sporting legend for Hall of Fame

The City of Good Sports is looking for the next inductees to the Sporting Hall of Fame. Nominations are now open, with members of the community able to nominate local sporting heroes. If the new candidates are selected, they will join world class athletes such as Sally Shippard, Mark Taylor and Steve Mortimer in the Hall of Fame. “Wagga Wagga is known as the City of Good Sports and there are many sportspeople who have reached the pinnacles of their careers and are deserving of a nomination for induction into the Sporting Hall of Fame,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall said. “Acceptance into the Sporting Hall of Fame reflects the valuable contribution the nominee has made to their sport and to Wagga.”

to cater for an increase in CBD traffic, even more car parking will need to be provided, which must include high rise car parking stations. And as unpalatable as it may sound, the subject of car parking meters will need to be discussed.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Annual Grants Program has helped add a splash of colour to one of the city’s most popular attractions. The Wagga Wagga Society of Model Engineers (WWSME) was successful in its funding application for a mural on part of the Willans Hill Miniature Railway track. The tunnel under Lord Baden Powell Drive has in recent times been vandalised by graffiti, with WWSME engaging local artist Kyle Pearson to design and paint the tunnel and its entrances. Council and WWSME shared 50 per cent of the cost of the artwork, which features a vibrant peacock and incorporated suggestions from Council’s Arts and Culture, Parks and Gardens and Museum of the Riverina staff, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens and members of the society. The railway operates between 10.30am and 4pm on the first and third Sunday of each month. Bill the enviro education trailer hits the streets Meet Bill – Council’s newest employee. Bill is Wagga Wagga City Council’s new sustaina-Bill-ity education trailer and features a 250 watt solar system that powers energy efficient LED lights, a TV screen and mobile devices. He’s been popping up around the city in the past few weeks, performing his first official duties at the Garden and Leisure Festival on 24 and 25 October. Bill has also attended Sturt Public School’s Twilight Community Markets and the Lutheran Sustainable Living Festival, where he had a brush with stardom when he met Costa from ABC’s Gardening Australia. “The aim of Bill is to provide a backdrop for conversations between Council and the community on ways we can develop sustainable practices in the home and create an environmentally sustainable city,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.

Wagga Wagga City Council General Manager Alan Eldridge advised on Monday 9 November that the Director of Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche has submitted his resignation. His resignation has been accepted and Council takes this opportunity to thank him for the services he rendered to the Council and the contribution he has made to the wider community. Mr Kausche began at Wagga Wagga City Council in March 2007 as Manager Waste and Stormwater, and in April 2011 was appointed to the position of Director Infrastructure
