Sending our love and support Members of the Wagga Wagga community can send messages of support to the victims of the recent attacks across the world, with a condolence book available at Customer Service in the Civic Centre. In response to the recent attacks in France, the colours of the French flag emanated from inside the Civic Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall offered his support to all countries affected by recent attacks on behalf of the Wagga community.
“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by these recent acts of terrorism in France, Lebanon and across the world,” he said. “We offer our condolences to the families and friends of all victims of terrorism, including the hundreds of victims who have died this month alone. “We would like to offer our condolences to any citizens of those countries currently living in the Riverina. “With recent events fresh in our minds, internationally acclaimed
artist Craig Walsh’s projection work on the Civic Centre, Harmony, is a poignant reminder of the universal harmony that every community strives for.” At the Extraordinary Council Meeting on Monday 16 November, Council also formally recognised the victims of recent attacks with a condolence motion and observed a minutes’ silence. Wagga Wagga City Council will send on the condolence book to the effected countries’ embassies at the end of November.
TIMELY MESSAGE: Craig Walsh’s projection work Harmony has been on display each night at the Civic Centre.

with a strategy to respond to the population growth in the city. It will guide future development and inform how Council invests and plans for transport related initiatives such as: • walking and cycling infrastructure • road network upgrades including the freight network • management of car parking; and • public transport improvements Director Planning and Regulatory Services, Andrew Crakanthorp, said the strategy heralded a shift away from an organic and responsive approach to transport planning.

“This process allows Council to become strategic and consult with key stakeholders in our city to plan our future infrastructure in an integrated way,” he said. “We also need to put people and their needs at the forefront of planning.” More than 30 stakeholders from a variety of community groups, local organisations and the People’s Panel attended this week's stakeholder workshop, with everything from bypasses, more cycle ways and truck stops. “With community representatives investing their valuable time and ideas in this project
Council now has an obligation to make sure that we listen and follow through,” Mr Crakanthorp said. You can be a part of the conversation by going to the website and filling out the online survey and putting your ideas on the interactive map. Or be a part of the action by dropping in to the Speak Out event at the Civic Centre on Saturday 12 December, anytime between 9am to noon.

Cr Kendall to lead Country Mayors Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall was recently returned as Chairman of the Country Mayors Association for a third straight term. A resolution was needed to elect Cr Kendall as the association’s constitution states the position can only be held for two consecutive terms. Cr Kendall was nominated by Tumbarumba Shire Council and Bathurst Regional Council and was elected unopposed. The association also resolved at its 5 November meeting that Wagga Wagga City Council’s General Manager Alan Eldridge be appointed to the position of Secretary/Public Officer.

Marrambidya Wetland project on track for official opening in 2016
Wagga Wagga City Council is marking the next step in the Marrambidya Wetland development with bulky earthworks for the project almost complete. Named after the Wiradjuri word for Murrumbidgee, the wetland is on track for its official opening next year and will be a valuable community resource for educational, environmental, cultural and passive recreational activities. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Manager Environment & Recreation Services Mark Gardiner said it was exciting to see the wetland development take shape. “The project will redevelop the redundant tertiary treatment ponds into a natural wetland area,” he said. “The next phase is to complete our outdoor education area, install the bird hides and signs and of course the revegetation work that the Green Army are doing.” The Marrambidya Wetland project is a joint initiative of Council and funding partners Riverina Local Land Services and the NSW Environmental Trust, with the Federal Government’s Green Army initiative also joining

The wetland has links to the Wiradjuri Reserve, Wilks Park and the Riverside Precinct via the Wiradjuri Walking Track. It features three pond areas and a deep water channel, which will
allow aquatic animals refuge from warmer surface temperatures during the hot summer months. The large red gum logs that existed on site have also been retained on site to help construct habitat for aquatic and terrestrial animals. INFORMED COMMUNITY: More than 30 residents turned out to learn about funding the levee upgrade at a community forum held on 18 November in the Council meeting room. Residents also took the opportunity to see how their rates would change under the proposed Special Rate Variation (SRV), with Manager Finance Carolyn Rodney (right) one of the staff members on hand to discuss the SRV with the community.
This project is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.

Museum honoured with award for Writtenworlds The writing is on the wall – Museum of the Riverina is one of the best facilities in NSW. The recent exhibition Writtenworlds: handwritten local histories received highly commended in the three to 10 staff category at the Museum and Galleries NSW’s Imagine Awards. Held at the Justice and Police Museum in Sydney on 13 November, Writtenworlds was edged out by Hawkesbury Regional Museum’s exhibition Flood in a strong field of 24 nominees. Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy praised the hard work of everyone involved. “This is quite an achievement and I’d like to extend my congratulations to everyone who helped to bring the exhibition together, including staff, researchers, lenders, creatives, technicians and installers and in particular our Regional Museum officer Dr Rachael Vincent, who curated the show,” Mr Grealy said. “Exhibitions like Writtenworlds give the community and visitors alike to explore the stories of the past and present in an interesting and entertaining way.” The museum was also nominated for the engagement category for the exhibition Their Light Still Shines. Mr Grealy also reminded residents that 150 Years of Dame Mary Gilmore: Dreaming of Newer Note and War at Sea: The Navy during WWI at the Historic Council Chambers close tomorrow, 22 November. Wagga's first Hackathon on soon Wagga Wagga City Council is joining forces with Charles Sturt University, Intersect Australia and Murrumbidgee Family and Community Services to hold the community’s first “hackathon”. To be held from November 27 to 29 as part of national Social Inclusion Week, the hackathon is a collaborative event where developers and community members come together to transform data into solutions. The aim of the first hackathon is to assist youth that have low access to networks within the community to get out and meet
more people. Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) will be assisting organisers in the art of hacking, with food and drink, music and surprise giveaways donated by local businesses on offer for those who take part. The Wagga Hack for Good Hackathon will be held at the Learning Commons computer lab at CSU with a session for school students on Friday 27 November, followed by the Hackathon on the Saturday and Sunday from 9am.
Along with hackers, a number of volunteers are also needed to help run the Hackathon and help prepare for the event. For more information, contact Donna Argus from the Department of Family and Community on 6921 0082 or Professor Tim Wess from CSU on 0409 304 492.
