Stage set for rugby league blockbuster Excitement is building ahead of next year’s City v Country match in Wagga Wagga with Riverina football greats Trent Barrett and Laurie Daley helping to officially launch the event at McDonald’s Park. The launch took place amid significant work to upgrade the venue to include coaches and broadcasting boxes, which is the result of a partnership between Wagga Rugby League, Wagga Wagga City Council, NRL and the NSW Government. “This ground has come a long way in the past six years to be developed from farmland to the elite rugby league facility that we are standing on today,” Wagga Wagga Council’s Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout said. Wagga Wagga Rugby League has also managed this project and invested significant in-kind support into the project. “Securing the 2015 AAMI Country v City Origin game is recognition of the hard work and investment by the rugby league community and Wagga Wagga City Council over several years,” Councillor Tout continued.
“Without the volunteers and community these sorts of projects wouldn’t exist. It shows how important volunteerism and community ownership of assets is to getting things done in rural and regional communities. “Council looks forward to working with the NRL, CRL and the local rugby league community to further develop the venue and continue to bring elite level Rugby League to the City.” The ongoing venue upgrade has seen the grandstand roof at McDonald’s Park raised significantly to accommodate media, video referee and coaching facilities needed to host elite rugby league matches. An expansion of the grandstand’s undercover seating, along with the extension of the both ‘hills’ earlier this year, will help bring the crowd capacity of the venue up to 10,000. Tickets go on sale early next year for the City v Country match and organisers are confident they will be snapped up quickly. “It means a lot for everyone in the country to have games like this in regional towns, people will travel far and wide because they’re used to doing that.” former Junee football great and NSW Head Coach Laurie Daley said. “The community will support it and who knows; maybe one the kids in the crowd will end up playing in the NRL, representing NSW in the State of Origin or even playing for Australia one day.”

Despite still being six months away it seems the region is already making plans. “Everyone is pretty excited about it,” Country Coach Trent Barrett said. “I was at a wedding in my home town (Temora) on the weekend and everyone was talking about it. “I remember travelling to Wagga when I was a kid to watch a test match here and that experience has
stuck with me. “Hopefully we can create those same memories for local kids today, and give them something to aspire to.” The 2015 City v Country match will be held at McDonald’s Park, Exhibition Centre on Sunday 3 May.
State title water polo takes centre stage at Oasis
The versatility and quality of the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre was evident as it hosted a state level water polo competition this week. Teams from seven regions from across New South Wales converged on the facility to fight for the title of Combined High School Open Girls Water Polo champions. “It’s been remarkable to watch such a high quality competition unfold over the four days,” Acting Manager Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre, David Barrett said. “We host a range of competitions at the Oasis Aquatic Centre throughout the year, and I think having water polo here proves just how adaptable the facility is.” The Riverina team, featuring five players from Wagga Wagga, proved their worth by making the playoff for bronze. “The girls have really put it to the strong Sydney and Hunter sides. They always match up pretty evenly and they’re a really great bunch of girls to coach, have great sportsmanship and really support each other,” Riverina coach Paula Shumack said. “The Oasis is fabulous and all the teams that are coming in from across New South Wales are commenting on the quality of the facility. The field is a really good size and it’s an excellent facility for water polo.” This state level tournament is in addition to regular local water polo competitions that take place at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre.

Islamic conversations a hit with community
The weekly mowing report outlines the areas that Council is mowing and the areas scheduled for mowing in the coming week. The North team has commenced mowing in the Central Business District of Wagga Wagga. This will be followed by mowing in Estella on 25 November. The East team has commenced mowing in Tatton. This will be followed by mowing in Kooringal on 26 November. The West team has commenced mowing in Mount Austin. This will be followed by mowing in Ashmont on 27 November. The Peak Season team has commenced mowing in Mount Austin and Tatton. This will be followed by mowing in Kooringal and Ashmont on 26 November. Village mowing is currently taking place in Oura. This will be followed by mowing in Ladysmith on 26 November.

The Museum of the Riverina was blown away by the positive response to its Islamic Conversations event, which was held in conjunction with the ongoing Faith Fashion Fusion exhibition. More than two hundred people packed into the Council’s meeting room to listen to prominent Muslim Australians Susan Carland and Dr. Zacharia Matthews speak about Islamic culture and practices in Australia. Afterwards the crowd moved to the Historic Council Chambers where the local Muslim community provided food, music and a demonstration of Hijab tying. “It was wonderful to see so many members of the community from a variety of backgrounds attending the event,” Museum Manager, Luke Grealy said. “Considering the pressure many Australian Muslims in Australia are feeling at the moment, the huge crowd at this event showed Wagga is a truly caring community more interested in facts than fear created by certain elements in the media. “It’s a reflection of the response that we’ve also had to the exhibition, and has been a great process to engage with Wagga Wagga’s Islamic community.” The exhibition Faith Fashion Fusion is curated by the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. It celebrates successful Australian Muslim fashion designers, retailer and bloggers through exploring the emerging modest fashion market offering stylish and sports clothing to Muslim women. The themes of faith, fashion and Muslim identity are also explored through the experiences and achievements of a group of Australian Muslim women, including Susan Carland. “The success of the exhibition and the program reinforces that the Museum is a public place for all members of the community,” Mr Grealy added. Faith Fashion Fusion closes in Wagga Wagga on Sunday 23 November, which was the first leg of its national tour. The Museum of the Riverina is open 10am - 4pm Saturday and 10am - 2pm Sunday.

WATER QUALITY: Wagga Wagga City Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator, Sharomi Dayanand, takes a water sample from an air-conditioning unit. Environmental Health Officers are busy implementing Wagga Wagga City Council’s Legionella Management Plan, with testing of water cooling systems across the Local Government Area currently underway. It’s one of many preventative measures that Council staff do behind the scenes on a regular basis, to make sure the City stays healthy and clean without incident. “Regulated systems such as water-cooling towers can provide ideal breeding conditions for Legionella bacteria if not maintained properly,” Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said. “Wagga Wagga currently has 48 cooling towers in the City and surrounding areas that are inspected annually to ensure they are being maintained appropriately to prevent
the risk of Legionella disease.” Water-cooling systems are generally located within the larger buildings in the City for the purpose of cooling through the hot summer months. The recently reviewed Legionella Management Plan incorporates the key strategies and actions to ensure water-cooling systems are maintained and operated effectively to minimise the risk to public health. The Plan will also assist operators of the water-cooling systems within the City to continue to maintain a high standard. Next gen artists get creative at art gallery
Eighty of the Riverina’s most promising young artists have been busy creating artworks could end up hanging on the walls of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Operation Art is currently running workshops across regional New South Wales, helping to create bright and colourful artworks that help create a positive environment to aid the healing and recovery process of young patients. School children from Wagga Wagga, Uranquinty, Young and many other schools across the Riverina have been making unique creations in two separate full day workshops at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s E3 Art Space. “We host the workshops annually and the quality and diversity of artworks continues to amaze me every year,” Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s Curator Education and Public Programs Linda Elliot said. The workshops bring together some of the most talented artists from each participating school in the region. “I can be good at drawing when I’m not surrounded by people,” said 9 year old Jessica Lankin. One of 12 students from Young Public School, Jessica, was pointed out by her peers as being one of the most talented in the room, but there was plenty of creativity to be found among the other students as well. “Art helps you have a better imagination,” 10 year old Ashley Coddington from Young Public School said. “I like doing art because it’s a fun thing to do and makes me happy, and that means that when I have dreams I have good dreams not bad ones.” During the workshops students learnt a range of new visual arts techniques including charcoal drawing, mixed media, sculpting and print making.

From all the artworks created across the state, fifty will eventually be selected for the 2015 Touring Exhibition, which will begin in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Eight selected works from last year have also been donated to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. Operation Art is run by the NSW Department of Education’s Art Unit.

App icon design competition Meet Bud The My AppVenture iPhone and Android app is currently in development and Council would like you to design the app icon! My AppVenture is launching as a world first visitation app and will offer visitors the option of choosing their own “Appventure”, or having one designed for them based on their interests and preferences. The app is being developed by Wagga Wagga City Council, Coolamon Shire Council and Junee Shire Council in conjunction with Wagga Wagga business, 365cups. The app icon will set the tone for the overall look and feel of the app. Think
