Make your voice heard by taking part in the 2015 Community Survey We want your input! During October, Council will be rolling out the Community Survey and all residents are encouraged to take part. “This is the community’s opportunity to have their say on a wide range of Council services” Acting General Manager Alan Eldridge said.

“The Community Survey is an important tool in measuring Council’s performance as well as how we have performed as a community against the priorities identified in the Community Strategic Plan – Ruby & Oliver.” The survey consists of a random phone sample from across the Local Government

DEAD SET LEGEND

Area beginning on Thursday 15 October. However, everyone in the community can still take part by having their say online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ communitysurvey. The survey plays an important role in planning for the future, with the responses informing Council’s planning

framework, how resources are allocated and setting future service levels. The last survey in 2012 identified community engagement and assessment of building and development applications as areas for improvement for Council. In response, Council has seen an increase in the

number of development applications processed within 40 days, which is currently at 80 per cent. Specialist community engagement staff have also been employed, online communication has been improved and the award-winning Council News publication has been developed.

Get into the mix at Fusion15 on 17 October Food, music, art and culture from 98 countries will combine for Wagga’s annual multicultural street festival Fusion15 on Saturday 17 October. Whether you want the world on a plate or to have a boogie with the Dancing Accountant, this year’s Fusion is sure to entertain all corners of the community. In 2014, the Civic Centre was overflowing with 10,000 festival-goers from across the region. Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said staff have been hard at work curating a spectacular line up of artists, musicians, community performers and stallholders to ensure Fusion15 is the biggest yet. “Not only will we have some of the best acts in the country, Fusion15 will again showcase everything our community has to offer,” she said. “Wagga is made up of 98 countries, 99 language groups and 67 faiths – that diversity is what makes Wagga and Fusion so special. “There is literally something for everyone – if

you’re a foodie, come and taste cuisine from around the world. If you love music, you can see performers like L-FRESH the Lion and Mojo Juju. “You can even get hands on with free interactive art activities, or just roam around and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of Fusion15.” Sikh-inspired rapper L-FRESH The LION, the eclectic Mojo Juju, world music collective Reflejos Musique and one-man flash mob The Dancing Accountant are the major drawcards for this year’s Fusion. Fusion15 will form part of national tours for both Mojo Juju and L-FRESH, who will be kicking off his 11-show tour at the Wagga festival. With a passion for music and human rights, L-FRESH’s video for new song Get Mine has been gaining national media attention from The Guardian Australia and the 7.30 Report. To get into the mix, head to Fusion15 from 4pm to 9pm at the Civic Precinct or visit wagga.nsw. gov/fusion for more information.

Free interactive art activities to ignite your creativity From ham radio to giant building blocks, Fusion15 is giving the community the chance to get hands on with a wide range of artists. This year’s multicultural street festival will again feature eclectic performances, mouth-watering food and pop-up shops – plus free interactive creative art activities. Fusion15 will be held on Saturday, 17 October from 4pm to 9pm in the Civic Centre Precinct. For more information about this year’s festival, visit wagga.nsw. gov/fusion. Fusion15 is proudly funded and presented by Wagga Wagga City Council and Multicultural NSW in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Riverina Community College and St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.

THE WIRED LAB – EVENTWORKS PUBLIC ART COMMISSION

Roll up to the Global Communications Radio Club (GCRC) and experience the luck, skill and thrill of worldwide

communications via technologies of today and yesteryear. GCRC is a participatory ‘live’ artwork providing Fusion Festival goers with the opportunity to experience amateur AKA ‘ham’ radio culture while contributing to a socially generated artwork that will evolve and grow throughout Fusion15. GCRC is supported by Wagga Wagga City Council’s Public Art program WaggaWorks and is a collaboration with The Wired Lab.

SIONE FALEMAKA

A triple citizen of Polynesian descent, artist Sionemaletau was born in Niue and now lives, studies and works in Sydney. He produces work based on traditional weavings learned from his grandmother and passed down the generations. His designs shift in scale and involve beads, feathers, seeds, yarns, dyes, textiles and other recycled materials like celluloid film that weave their way into his work. For Fusion15, Sione has created the House of Plenty, using celluloid

film to weave sides of the shelter and will be inviting people in to teach for Rourou (food bowl) Traditional Moari, Niuean and Polynesian weaving workshops.

HEIDRUN LOHR

Heidrun Lohr has been photographing Sydney’s performing arts community for more than 25 years and across that period has photographed some of Australia’s best known actors. Heidrun captured Fusion14 and returned to Wagga last month to photograph a number of the community performers as they went through their rehearsals in preparation for Fusion15. These images will be installed at Fusion15 in a 10-metre long installation, as well as projected on to the Civic Centre building facing the Wollundry Lagoon.

Councillor Column

Much has been said over recent months regarding the transparency of the processes surrounding the Douglas Aerospace issue. This issue has highlighted for me a value that I firmly hold onto, that is, it is our job

as elected representatives to ask the hard questions. Throughout this process that has been the case and when the report that this present Council commissioned is fully examined I have no doubt that there will be more detail in answer to the hard questions and new strategies and processes to be considered flowing from the report. Asking the hard questions and reaching a consensus is

New planting to replace plane tree

The large plane tree next to the Civic Theatre was removed on 6 October following safety concerns. A large crack had developed in the base of the more than 50-year-old tree, with an independent assessment discovering the cavity extended almost to ground level. Contractors removed the tree on 6 October, using a crane to carefully lower the tree’s six large leaders to the ground. The tree was estimated to be about 24 metres high, with the canopy spreading 10 to 12 metres wide. While its exact age isn’t known, pictures from the early years of the Civic Theatre show the tree is well established. A semi-mature plane tree will be planted as a replacement, slightly further north of the existing tree.

our job as your elected body, moving forward that should continue to be our priority. The substantial number of major projects in process at this time including such things as RiFL, the Apex Park upgrade, Tipping Point and the amazing Wagga Beach upgrade – as well as the work that continues in relation to regular Council functions all require a cohesive approach. Having said that and looking forward, the next 12 months will also bring with them probably the most substantial

councillor.tout@wagga.nsw.gov.au changes in local government in NSW for decades – a new Local Government Act and the creation of regionally based Joint Organisations of Councils. This will be a very busy time for our elected body, staff and most importantly the communities involved in our Council area. It is critical that all of the parties mentioned above work in a collaborative and transparent way to tackle these challenges. Finalising the Douglas

Alan Eldridge announced as Acting GM

Continued from front page “Mr Eldridge has been the Chair of Council’s Audit and Risk Committee since 2009 and has a background in managing large organisations. “He has also been involved with the local government amalgamation process mainly in Queensland and is a special administrator appointed by the Federal Government to assist organisations that require senior management experience.” Mr Eldridge has resigned from his position on the Audit and Risk Committee following his appointment as Acting General Manager.

“I’d like to thank Council for this opportunity and I look forward to creating a smooth transition for the new General Manager following the recruitment process,” Mr Eldridge said. “The community can rest assured that over the next six months it will be business as usual.” Both Cr Kendall and Mr Eldridge thanked Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes for stepping into the role of Acting General Manager following the resignation of Phil Pinyon on 24 September. The recruitment process for a new General Manager will begin shortly.

Aerospace issue is just one piece of the puzzle. Open and honest two-way communication is what is needed by all parties to ensure the most efficient level of services are maintained and that hard questions are asked and answered. Wagga is a vibrant and diverse city and there is much to celebrate. It is a community that enjoys coming together for a good cause, such as the recent Walk4William and the Relay for Life this weekend.

Brumbies trial tickets on sale now

Don’t wait or you might miss out. Tickets are on sale now for the Super Rugby trial game between the Brumbies and the Waratahs to be held at McDonald’s Park on 6 February 2016. The cross-border battle is set to attract a mammoth crowd to the city, which has hosted a number of high-profile sporting events over the past year.

The trial will be played just three weeks out from the start of the 2016 Super Rugby season. The clash against the Waratahs follows the successful Super Rugby trial held in Wagga in January between the Brumbies and eventual 2015 Super Rugby champions the Highlanders. The Highlanders won that

match 24-19. Falling well within the club’s catchment area, which extends between the Victorian boarder in the south and Goulburn in the north, Wagga forms one of the most important regions for the Brumbies with thousands of players annually contesting the Southern Inland Rugby Union competition.

With the possibility of Brumbies players David Pocock, Joe Tomane, and Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore taking on the likes of Israel Folau, Kurtley Beale and Michael Hooper, this game will give Wagga fans an opportunity to watch a world-class game of rugby in their own backyard. Tickets are $5 for juniors (five to 15 years) and $15 for adults (plus

$548,000 saved in electricity usage Council has slashed its electricity bill by more than half a million dollars. At the September ordinary meeting, a report provided an update on Council energy projects to reduce energy costs and consumption. At the end of the 2014/15 financial year, Council’s total expenditure on electricity was $2.98 million and an additional $259,000 for gas. Council’s electricity consumption has decreased by 684,575kWh and $548,058 compared to the same

period in the previous financial year. Council also resolved to continue to negotiate with Essential Energy to incorporate LED lamps within future street lighting programs. With about 6500 street lights in the LGA, they make up 21 per cent of Council’s overall electricity profile. A consultant will also be engaged to scope and prepare the necessary documents for an energy performance contract to evaluate the potential for further energy savings.
