Wagga Waggafest winners announced at awards night A hilarious animation about a little girl wanting to join the local rugby team has taken out the major prize at this year’s fourth annual Wagga Waggafest Short Film Competition.
Sheraden Robins’ film A Wagga Wagga Winter Tale is a light-hearted fable that wryly satires Wagga’s sportsobsession at the height of footy fever in the 80’s. The film was judged the Hume Bank Best Film and took home the $2500 prize in front of a full house at the Civic Theatre Wednesday night, and was also successful in winning the Best Story category of the competition. This year’s Wagga Waggafest theme was ‘celebrating winter’ and based on the winter bubble decal located on the outside of the Civic Centre building. Entrants Tim Moran and Samantha Invernon, who are in their final year of study at CSU, have entered Waggafest for three consecutive years and took out the inaugural
$1000 Charles Sturt University prize with their film Secret Friends. The prize for Best Original Score was awarded to Kooringal Public School’s year 5 and 6 students, who wrote, directed, acted and edited their film Kobe’s Crisis. The score incorporated a choir and the class band. Voting is now open for the People’s Choice Award. More than 20 films were entered into this year’s competition and all are now available to be viewed, and voted for, on Council’s website www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/waggafest. The film with the most votes will be announced and screened as part of the 2015 Australia Day Movies in the Park celebrations. Upgrade for Centenary celebrations to commence
Wagga Wagga’s eternal flame is set to receive a $120,000 upgrade in time for the centenary of ANZAC celebrations in 2015. The work, which is due to commence on Monday 20 October, is a jointly funded initiative between Wagga Wagga City Council, Wagga RSL Club and the RSL Sub Branch. The upgrade is expected to take around eight weeks to complete with work to commence with
the demolition of the existing pond fence, eternal flame pond structure, overhead timber beams, brick piers and planter boxes. A new six metre diameter pond with a locally designed eternal flame sculpture will then be constructed. The new pond will feature a concrete ring around it with LED lights and three new brass cover plates displaying the words “Vigilance”, “Sacrifice” and
“Liberty” to appropriately represent the significance of the flame. The area surrounding the pond will also receive some much needed upkeep in the form of cleaning, polishing and repainting, with the existing entrance gates to be sandblasted and powder coated. These upgrades are an essential part of the ANZAC celebrations and aim to continue to reflect on an important part of Australian history and the

Nomination forms can be collected from the Civic Centre, 2WG Offices or can be downloaded or completed and submitted on Council’s website www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/AustraliaDay. Pedal power to work More than 30 staff from Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC) and the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) participated in Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 15 October. Ride to Work Day promotes cycling as a viable option to commuting to work and aims to break down the barriers that people have about choosing riding to work as an option. Riders who took part included Mayor, Rod Kendall and WWCC General Manager, Phil Pinyon. This year, the staff were given an opportunity to join a “bike bus” that lead riders along four different routes to the CBD. The rides were lead by experienced commuter cyclists from both organisations. The ride culminated with a healthy breakfast and riders were given a presentation on rider safety from the experienced staff from Morgan Street Cycles. Plans have already commenced to bring this event to the wider ON YOUR BIKE: Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga community next year after the success of this year’s ride. Weekly mowing report
I am both excited by and disappointed by the State Government’s Fit for the Future Package. This package fails to recognise
the most significant long term issue that has been adversely affecting local government in NSW for many years, namely cost shifting. The aim of the current review of the structure Local Government is to position LG to best meet the challenges of the future. Whilst this review has been progressing the Local Government Act has also been under review by the Local Government Acts Taskforce. The combination of
these two reviews in tandem presents a unique opportunity to strengthen local government. The outcomes that Local Government supports include: • Reduction of red tape and of State Government oversight. • Access to cheaper finance • The formation of Joint Organisations of Councils. • Retention of local representation • Formal recognition and documentation of the role
The weekly mowing report outlines the areas that Council is mowing and the areas scheduled for mowing in the coming week. The North team has commenced mowing in the Central Business District. This will be followed by mowing in Estella on 21 October. The East team has commenced mowing in Tatton and Springvale. This will be followed by mowing in Kooringal on 24 October. The West team has commenced mowing in Glenfield. This will be followed by mowing in Lloyd on 27 October. The Peak Season team has commenced mowing in Ashmont. This will be followed by mowing in Kooringal on 24 October. Village mowing is currently taking place in Humula. This will be followed by mowing in Galore on 24 October.
councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au of each level of government along with an agreement by each level of Government to fund any of its responsibility that is handed to another level. The state government has now released its Fit for the Future package which is designed to guide the next stage of the reform process. The Fit for the Future package recognises many of local government’s aspirations but disappointedly fails to address
the significant issue of cost shifting. Cost shifting is resulting in an additional expenditure of some $3.4M each year for WWCC alone. This amount is escalating. WWCC and all other Councils in this region are committed to coming together to work proactively through the reform process with the belief that Local Government (as with all areas of the business world) can improve. Joint Organisations of Council will result in better and
more formalised collaboration and co-operation which will drive better regional outcomes. The rural area is very different to Sydney. Sydney can’t continue to have more than 50 government areas. In rural areas the distances are vast and it remains important that local representation and participation be preserved during this reform.

Battle of the sexes on the menu at Great Debate Six of the Riverina’s biggest names in food will put down their utensils to debate an age-old question in a free event at the Civic Theatre, Wednesday 22 October. The Great Debate returns again this year as a mirthful aperitif to the smorgasboard on offer during the Taste Riverina Festival, and is presented in partnership between Eastern Riverina Arts, ABC Riverina and Wagga Wagga City Council. This year’s debate will settle for good whether “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Leading the argument on the affirmative side is pig-farmer and creator of EAT LOCAL THURSDAY markets Penny Scott. She is joined by ABC Riverina’s local cooking guru Sara Morley, who will bring the same grit and passion to the debate that enable her to train half of Wagga’s chefs through her role at TAFE. The argument that men are governed by their guts will then be served up by journalist and provocateur Marguerite McKinnon. She has put more than a few pollies under the grill in her time covering Federal politics and will no doubt turn up
the heat on her opponents. Acclaimed cabaret performer, director, musician and radio personality Peter Casey will lead the team arguing on the negative. Junee Licorice factory’s Neil Druce will distill his team’s wisdom using the same technique he applies in his latest enterprise - whisky production. Rounding out their assault on their opponents is Jess Creasey, the dapper proprieter of the Old Empire Tea Rooms, who will pour boiling water over the argumentation of his foes. Chris Coleman from ABC Riverina will moderate the debate but with this much personality in the kitchen, expect ladles of laughs on the side! The Great Debate commences at 6pm, Wednesday 22 October at the Civic Theatre. Free tickets are available at the Civic Theatre Box Office or from the theatre’s website.

Celebrating winter sports on Council’s big screen
To celebrate the winter sports finals season, Wagga Wagga City Council commissioned third year Charles Sturt University photography student Georgia McLeod to capture Wagga Wagga winter sports men and women in action. With consultation from the Netball, Hockey, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer and Australian Rules Football Associations Georgia has captured our local sports participants of all ages in their full competitive spirit. Local associations have been pleased to see their sports projected, with many families viewing the nightly projections. Photo Finish will return in 2015 to celebrate finals weeks for both summer and winter sports. This projection is a joint project between Council’s Cultural and Sports and Recreation divisions. The four projectors were installed in December 2013 as part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s public art program. Photo Finish is part of an ongoing schedule of NightLights projections. Projections are on nightly at the Civic Centre from 6.30pm to 10.30pm until Thursday 23 October.
