Out with the old NEW ROAD: Works to rehabilitate the 1.3 kilometres of Lakeside Drive have been completed.
The project to rehabilitate 1.3 kilometres of Lakeside Drive has been completed.
Work on the project commenced in March and included the installation of 2.3kms of kerb and gutter, 200m of invert crossings, modifications and adjustments to the existing drainage systems and 1.3kms of subsoil drainage, as well as the full rehabilitation of the existing road base. The project also included significant driveway replacements, nature strip repairs and was conducted in the off season, so it was completed in time for the high-use summer period. “The complete rebuild of Lakeside Drive will deliver a far improved road pavement well into the future,” Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche explained. “The bitumen surface placed on the pavement will take a couple of weeks to bed in properly and during this time it requires protection from wheel skids and tearing by the turning motion of vehicles.” To protect the new bitumen a layer of loose stones has been placed on top of the finished surface to provide
a lower friction surface for the settling in period. The contractor will return next week to remove these loose stones and the road surface will be complete. “The loose stones are slippery and warning signs have been put in place to advise motorists of the hazard,” Mr Kausche said. “Residents and other users of the road are asked to take care.” The Lakeside Drive project was funded by the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme and Roads to Recovery Program. It formed part of Council’s ongoing pavement and road rehabilitation program and was designed and constructed to comply with Council’s development standards. These standards are in place to ensure asset rehabilitation is cost effective and provides long-term improvement of the asset and the service it provides the community. “Council crews working to deliver the project faced many obstacles in ensuring they delivered the highest quality product,” Mr Kausche said.

Shield preparations well underway Preparations for the 2015 Sheffield Shield match at Wagga Wagga’s Robertson Oval are already well underway – four months out from the event. The four-day match, scheduled for Sunday 15 February to Wednesday 18 February, will be played between the NSW Blues and the Victorian Bushrangers. “Council commenced preparations at Robertson Oval about six weeks ago,” Council’s Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation), Ben Creighton said. “Preparations are going very well, we are ahead of schedule and the field and practice wickets will be in
immaculate condition for the game in February.” Cricket NSW and Wagga Cricket Association have worked with Wagga Wagga City Council to help bring the match to the city. “The three groups working together means we are going to get a first class result out of the event,” Luke Olsen, Development Manager Cricket NSW said. “Cricket NSW are really happy with how things are progressing and the facility is top notch. “The main things for game day are the pitch and the outfield, but also practice facilities, and they are all ticked off – there are no issues with
any of them.” “The facility is ready to go, it’s just the finer details that we need to work together on.” Cricket NSW and Council have agreed on multiple year agreements which will see an U14’s State Challenge in the city in 2015/16 and 2016/17, along with a plan to improve local cricket facilities. The return of Sheffield Shield to regional NSW will be a just reward for country cricket fans who will get a chance to see the current Shield holders, NSW Blues, up close and personal in their own backyard.
Educators recognised Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) celebrated 39 years of service to the community this week with a special event that recognised a number of new and long servicing educators. “Wagga Regional Family Day Care conducts these events to allow our network to get together and celebrate the achievements of our service and the individuals who make it great,” WWRFDC Service Manager, Kym Stewart said. “This is our 39th year celebrating the fact that every day our practice with children is carefully considered and planned to ensure quality outcomes for every child who comes to WWRFDC. “The event will be especially significant for a number of educators, whose long service of 5, 10, 15 and 20 years will be recognised with a special presentation. “We will also be acknowledging those new educators that have completed their first year of service with WWRFDC.” In all, 15 educators were presented with Service Awards at the event for educators, staff, parents and friends.
“WWRFDC currently has 56 approved Family Day Care educators and two In Home Care Educators running successful small businesses in Wagga Wagga and the region,” Ms Stewart explained. “Together, educators and the coordination unit nurture, inspire and educate approximately 350 children from 250 families each week.

In bringing Garage Sale Trail to its local residents Wagga Wagga City Council saw an opportunity to deliver a fun, creative and community-driven program for the benefit of residents and local organisations who might want to repurpose their unwanted belongings, live in a more sustainable fashion by reducing waste, connect with their community and raise some money for themselves or others. “Wagga Wagga City Council is proud to be supporting Garage Sale Trail in 2014,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer, Alice Kent said. “The campaign offers our community the opportunity to think creatively about how we can reuse items that might otherwise end up in landfill. “Council is encouraging everyone to think about those in the community who might benefit from your unwanted items, and likewise what treasures might be out there waiting to be found!” Now in its fourth year, Garage Sale Trail is supported by over 120 Councils nationally and is expecting up to 10,000 garage sales across the country with over 1.5 million items for sale. To put it politely… Wagga Wagga City Council (and Local Government in general) is being walked all over by the State and Commonwealth Governments.
Not only are we restricted in raising revenue to fund vital maintenance and infrastructure, the State and Commonwealth Governments are eating into our scarce finances. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has pegged rates to just 2.3 percent. This same Tribunal has allowed gas charges to rise by 21 percent in Wagga Wagga as well as allowing some government departments to increase their charges to
local government by up to 10 percent. Further pressures are coming from electricity charges (up by more than 50 percent in the last five years) as well as increases in wages and a host of other expenses. With this size 18 “revenue restricting boot” placed squarely between our collective shoulder blades, residents of Wagga Wagga also have to find $3.4m each year to fund programs and

Get Away to the theatre The Civic Theatre will continue its legacy of producing quality community productions when Away hits the stage from 1 – 8 November, directed by local theatre legend Peter Cox. “Previous Civic Theatre productions have all been musicals, this year the Theatre will present Michael Gow’s classic Australian play – a funny, moving play, which tells the story of three internally conflicted families holidaying on the coast for Christmas 1968,” Manager, Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre Carissa Campbell explained. ‘One of the integral benefits of community production is that not only do they involve the community, they also build a community. The Civic Theatre has seen this phenomenon occur in previous productions and its happening again with Away. “People participate in locally produced shows for a variety of reasons, they might be looking to make friends, develop skills and refine their craft, to reactivate childhood memories, or use the exercise as a springboard into

Executive Director of the Riverina Regional Library (RRL), Robert Knight, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the inaugural State Library of NSW Honours, presented by Dame Marie Bashir in Sydney on Monday 20 October. “Robert was recognised for his significant professional achievements and contributions to Australian libraries,” Wagga Wagga City Council Director Environmental and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes said. In his role as Executive Director of RRL, a position he has held since 1993, Robert administers the largest regional library service in NSW. The organisation is considered to be an outstanding example of Local Government collaboration. The RRL serves 130,100 constituents in 12 member councils covering a geographic area of 39,360 sq km, through a network of 17 branch libraries and two mobile libraries that visit 60 communities between them. Robert has been an active contributor to the Australian library sector throughout his career. He served on the Library
Council of NSW as the Local Government representative from 2003-2011, is a member of the NSW Public Libraries Consultative Committee, is a past Chairperson of Public Libraries Australia and is currently the inaugural Chairperson of the Australasian Mobile Library Network. In addition, Robert is a significant contributor to the NSW Public Libraries Association, having held a number of key positions in the organisation. In accepting the award, Robert said, “I am surprised, humbled and honoured to receive this wonderful recognition. The NSW library sector is full of exceptional contributors, and I am grateful to be part of such an innovative and progressive profession. I will continue to do whatever I can to keep our libraries strong, sustainable and relevant. They are a critical community service.” Robert also acknowledged the support of the Wagga Wagga City Council and Riverina Regional Library in supporting his professional endeavours.

Meet Buzz
This week’s pet of the week is ‘’Buzz’’, a 2 year old Male Border Collie. Buzz has a beautiful affectionate and loving nature once he gets to know you, but as he a pinch of Blue heeler in him, he is very protective of his space and this would make him a good guard dog. He is extremely playful and would make a great addition to a family with land or a large yard with good fences. Being a working dog Buzz would need regular exercising and plenty of attention. Buzz can be adopted for $291.18, which would include vaccinations, desexing, de-worming, microchip, lifetime registration and a vet check. An estimated 10,000 people attended the free FUSION14 Multicultural Street Festival held at the Victory Memorial Gardens last weekend. “Fusion14 was a huge success drawing people, performers and food stalls from all over the country,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes said. Many residents and visitors celebrated the growing cultural diversity of Wagga Wagga well into the night. Now in it’s fourth year, the festival continues to grow. “Given that in the last census over 35% of all new people relocating to Wagga Wagga were from overseas countries this event promotes diversity, harmony and acceptance of many cultures and is highly valued by community members and key stakeholders,” Ms Summerhayes added. “This festival is all about celebrating the coming together of people in Wagga Wagga, no matter who we are or where we have come from.”
