FOOTY’S BACK: Brumbies player Josh Mann-Rea and Wagga Mayor Rod Kendall announce that the ACT club will be playing the Waratahs at McDonald’s Park next year.
BRUMBIES ARE BACK Super Rugby returns to Wagga with cross-border battle
premiers the Highlanders earlier this year. Knowing most Riverina rugby fans are split between the NSW and ACT clubs, Brumbies hooker Josh MannRea is tipping an even bigger turn out for next year’s clash. Wagga Wagga will host the cross“Last year was a good spectacle out border battle on 6 February as both sides look to build momentum into the here and a good game for the boys – it will be even better this year playing new Super Rugby season. The trial game will be the second in a the ‘Tahs on February 6,” he said. “Wagga’s in our community rugby two-year partnership between Wagga area so hopefully we’ll have a few Wagga City Council, the Brumbies, more fans than the ‘Tahs. The Brumbies are back – and this time they’ll be tackling one of their biggest rivals, the Waratahs.
A recent report to Council found the first trial game resulted in a $271,320 boost for the local economy. The January clash kicked off a big year for top level sport in the city, with Wagga also hosting a Sheffield Shield clash at Robertson Oval and the hugely successful Country-City Origin game at McDonald’s Park. “The quality of the games we’ve had at this venue in particular, but also at other venues over the past 12 to 18 months has just been outstanding,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “To have the Brumbies back for a second trial match is a great boost to the game locally and a great outcome
for Wagga and the Riverina generally. “Looking back to last year’s Brumbies-Highlanders game, it was probably the toughest and hardesthitting trial match I’ve seen and at the end of season both teams played finals.” ACT Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones praised the facilities at the upgraded McDonald’s Park and said the club is looking forward to returning to Wagga. “One of the reasons we chose to play both the Waratahs in 2016 and the Highlanders earlier this year was because the facilities in Wagga are going to be among the best regional Australia has to offer,” he said.

Garage Sale Trail to hit Wagga again Households, schools and community groups across the Wagga Wagga region are set to join hundreds of thousands of fellow Aussies for the fifth Garage Sale Trail. An award-winning community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail is powered by more than 150 local councils and over 10,000 garage sales are expected to be held on Saturday 24 October. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said the trail was a unique opportunity to promote sustainability and community building in a fun and creative way. “Wagga Wagga City Council is proud to again take part in this national initiative,” he said. “Garage Sale Trail helps people to think creatively
about how we can reuse items that might otherwise be put out for waste collection and possibly end up in landfill. “The trail isn’t just for households – it’s also a great fund-raising opportunity for schools or community groups.” Registration is free and includes a seller webpage that can be personalised by naming the garage sale and listing items that will be for sale on the day. There’s also a whole swag of tips and tools available to help sellers promote their sales. If you register before 25 September you will receive a seller pack with lots of goodies to ensure a successful garage sale. To register and for more information, visit garagesaletrail.com.au.

Byrne brings star power to Oz Day Professional dancer Jarryd Byrne will waltz into Wagga Wagga for the city’s Australia Day celebrations next January. Fresh from finishing third in the Dancing with the Stars finale with partner Ash Pollard from My Kitchen Rules, Mr Byrne has this week been announced as Wagga’s 2016 Australia Day Ambassador. Mr Byrne grew up in Wagga and has been dancing since the age of eight, having trained in ballroom, Latin American, salsa and hip hop. As Ambassador, Mr Byrne will give an address at the Australia Day awards ceremony on 24 January
and attend events on Australia Day. “When I think of Australia Day, I think of sporting stars or successful people in the community,” Mr Byrne said “To have my dancing and my TV and stage presence acknowledged in that sort of calibre is a huge honour. “I have such strong ties to Wagga and so much love for Wagga, my family’s still there. “It’s going to be amazing to be a part of Australia Day in Wagga.” Mr Byrne has been hard at work since the Dancing with the
Stars premiere in July including choreographing five dances in the lead up to the final two shows. With his third season on Dancing with the Stars wrapped up, Mr Byrne is now in Brisbane for his role as Nathan Starkey in Baz Lurhmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical. With such a busy life, Mr Byrne said Australia Day was a chance to reflect. “Australia Day for me means getting together with the people I love and celebrating where I live, who I live with and the people I’m surrounded by,” he said.
“I have a busy life and it’s a significant day to acknowledge why I work so hard.” Mr Byrne moved to Sydney at 18 to develop his dancing and went on to compete nationally and internationally. He went on to tour the US with Jason Gilkison’s Broadway spectacular Burn the Floor and performed in Shake, Rattle and Roll. He made his debut on Dancing with the Stars in 2013 with Jesinta Campbell and last year had a shot at the mirror ball trophy with pop star Ricki-Lee Coulter.

See it, report it. That’s the message from Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall following reports of increased graffiti. “If you spot graffiti or vandalism on Council property, please let us know and staff can then organise its removal,” Cr Kendall said. “You can contact our customer service team, make a request online or use the iCouncil app.” Examples of Council property include playgrounds, parks and Council signage and buildings. For incidents of graffiti on other state government or commercial property, residents are urged to contact those
owners, for their opportunity to also clean up their assets. “Cleaning up graffiti is a costly exercise for residents, businesses and all levels of government,” Cr Kendall said. “Tackling this sort of vandalism is a community effort and together we can all make a difference.” Victims of graffiti can call the Police Assistance Line on 13 14 44. If you have information relating to graffiti vandalism, know of persons responsible, or require additional information, contact NSW Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Businesses throw support behind Waggafest More local businesses have thrown their support behind the Wagga Waggafest short film competition. Waggawagga.tv, 365cups, Mayfly Media and the Thirsty Crow have joined Hume Bank and Charles Sturt University as sponsors of the awards, ensuring a prize pool of $6000 is on offer for the lucky winners. Judges Peter Cox, Sonya Gee and Lex Marinos are now hard at work assessing entries on a range of factors, including their “Wagga-ness” and relevance to this year’s theme “the best is yet to come”. “Waggafest cultivates and supports local talent,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said.
“It’s great to see local businesses get behind this year’s competition, which has had an unprecedented number of entries from under 18-year-olds.” The Tropfest-inspired short film competition was developed by Council and ties in with the city brand. Adopted in December 2010, the brand concept is that Wagga is more than just one big thing – it’s about the hundred things that are different for all of us, but add up to the city being a great place to live, work and play. For more information on Waggafest and to keep updated about next month’s special awards screening night, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/waggafest.
