Blonde ambition It’s a musical so entertaining it should be illegal. Michelle Brasier got into character as the pretty-in-pink Elle Woods this week for a sneak peek at this year’s community production, Legally Blonde – The Musical. The international award-winning musical based on the movie follows the transformation of Elle as she chases the man of her dreams to Harvard Law School. The show will hit the Civic Theatre stage in November with a cast of talented locals, including Brasier who will return to her home town for the role. “It’s great to be back and working with such an awesome bunch of people,” she said.
“People would say Elle is not too bright, but I think she’s really smart. She thinks she’s going to get married and that all falls apart, so she has to find her own way and be this independent woman. “It’s a feel-good show. The music is really poppy and modern – I think that’s why people like it so much.” Brasier is currently based in Melbourne, having attended the prestigious Victoria College of the Arts and the University of Ballarat Arts Academy after graduating from Kooringal High School. Legally Blonde – The Musical plays at the Civic Theatre from 7 to 21 November with both matinee and evening performances. For more information, visit civictheatre.com.au

the Eastern University Games in July and a Sheffield Shield match in February. While major sporting events have given a more than $4 million boost to the local economy this year, the new AFL partnership is set to have a lasting impact on the community. “This new two-year partnership with AFL NSW/ACT will see two Kick Start Centres established in Ashmont and Tolland for It’s the latest announcement for Indigenous youth,” Council’s the City of Good Sports, which Director Environmental and this year has hosted CountryCommunity Services Janice City Origin in May, the first of two Summerhayes said. the Multicultural AFL Program, and AFL NSW/ACT will provide free registration for Indigenous and multicultural players. “Another major benefit for the city is the hosting of a North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) home and away game in 2016 or ’17 to compliment the AFL preseason match.” Council will provide $40,000 in funding to AFL NSW/ACT 2015/16 and 2016/17 as part of the partnership. The new plan will also see a media box and a second canteen constructed at Robertson Oval.
The news follows last week’s announcement the Brumbies will take on the Waratahs at McDonald’s Park next February in the second Super Rugby trial. “Council staff have been hard at work to create partnership opportunities for Wagga,” Ms Summerhayes said. “These sorts of events and programs make our city a great place to live and work, as well as ensuring we have an active and healthy community.” AFL NSW/ACT has indicated Wagga may host the preseason game as soon as next year.

Get garden smart at workshops
Green thumbs know the best way to improve their gardens and lawns is by using compost. REROC’s Garden Smart Workshops are on in Wagga on Thursday 24 September, with residents able to hear from well-known regional horticulturalist and ABC Radio gardening expert Kerry Geale. Mr Geale will discuss the types of bins and facilities that can be used, the benefits of composting, the best locations for compost bins, what can be composted and trouble shooting. The workshops are aimed
at beginners and experienced composters who are just looking to update their knowledge and skills. The workshop will be held at the Sensory Garden, adjacent to the Wagga Wagga Men’s Shed in Ashmont on Thursday 24 September from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Residents who attend the free workshop will go into a draw to win a home composting bin. For more information, contact Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent on 1300 292 442.

Waggafest screening next month From budding young film makers to professional animators, the best of this year’s Waggafest will go on show next month at the Special Awards Screening Night. Held on Wednesday 14 October at the Civic Theatre, all of this year’s finalists will be screened and $6000 in prizes awarded across seven categories. If you’re a short film fanatic or just want to support burgeoning local talent, tickets to the free event can be booked now at civictheatre.com.au or by calling the theatre
on 6926 9688. Last year’s screening night was all-but booked out, but there’s good news if you can’t make it. Sponsors of the Best Wagga Visual prize, Waggawagga.TV, will be streaming the entire event online on the night. You can catch all of the finalists, plus hear from the judges, award winners and more as we share this year’s unique Wagga stories. The Mayfly Media Young Filmmaker
category is set to be hotly contested, with more than half of this year’s entries vying for the under 18s category prize. Sheraden Robins and Klutch Kable will be defending their Hume Bank Best Overall Film award with a high-flying tale that will premiere at the awards night. Also being presented on the night are the Charles Sturt University Award for the best film from a CSU student or staff member, the Thirsty Crow Best Wagga Story to judge the “Wagganess” of the entries, and the Best
Original Score prize. Once the judges Peter Cox, Sonya Gee and Lex Marinos have had their say on the night, it’s over to you to decide the 365cups People’s Choice Award. After the awards night you can watch all of this year’s films at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ waggafest and then cast your vote. The winner will be revealed during Movies in the Park held in the Victory Memorial Gardens during Wagga’s Australia Day celebrations.

History hanging inside airport terminal
A piece of history is now hovering inside the Wagga Wagga Airport terminal. A full-size replica of the Duigan 1910 Pusher Flyer aeroplane has been suspended from the ceiling in a partnership between Council and the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame. The original aircraft was 10 metres in length, with a wingspan of seven metres, and was powered by
a four-cylinder, air cooled engine built by Tillaroo Motors to Duigan’s design. The replica was handbuilt over two years by aviation enthusiasts in Geelong, celebrating the centenary of powered flight in Australia in 2010. Staff assisted the Hall Of Fame to install the necessary structural supports and hoist the historic aircraft for permanent display within the terminal.

Sonar helping map Lake Albert sediment levels
With beautiful spring weather and Lake Albert full to the brim, the popular recreation spot has been a hive of activity. But you might have spotted something different at the lake recently with a sonar survey being completed on 16 September. Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes
said the detailed survey using sonar technologies was the latest step in reviewing the Lake Albert Management Plan. “The survey will act as a baseline for the future monitoring of sediment build up and will be compared to historical data to calculate any increases in total sediment volumes,” she said. “The results of the survey will be part of the new draft
management plan, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. “Council staff have and will continue to work closely with community representatives in the development of the new Lake Albert Management Plan.” The lake was declared full at 191.5m above sea level late last month following above average rainfall in winter.

Councillor Column
I have at times come under fire for holding WWCC to account by being publicly critical of
the organisation. It is important that the role of an elected representative is exactly that, represent the constituents. This fact applies to all tiers of government. In the circumstance of holding the organisation to account, it is an absolute that this must
be done and would be a dereliction of duty not to do so. There have been some serious errors made in the past and a defence has been put forward rather than an acceptance of the facts. This has unfortunately led to a decline in trust of the organisation
councillor.funnell@wagga.nsw.gov.au from sections of the community. This then hinders a positive path forward. To the future, it is time to develop our vision for the Wagga LGA. We need to produce a document that encompasses where and what we as a community want and need in 30 to
50 years. Then act on this document. This vision should consist of transport plans, conference facilities, youth hubs, roads, Pomingalarna cycling facility, infrastructure, exhibition centre, sporting facilities – just to name a few. Get the vision to a
shovel-ready stage so when funding or grants become available, we are ready to go. Priorities may change from year to year, but we must stop this ad hoc approach that we currently have. We don’t need to put this in the hands of consultants, we as locals know what our
needs are. I ask everyone to get on board with an overall vision for the future and let’s drive this so that there is a positive way forward for all. After all, failure to plan is a plan to failure.

The 40th annual event was hosted at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre by the Wagga Leagues Crows, with more than 500 swimmers descending on the city from as far away as Cottesloe, WA. Competitors aged from 18 to 89 years old took part in 32 events, including former and upcoming Olympians and Surf Life Saving Champions.
