INSIGHTS: The Historic Council Chambers played host to the statewide launch of Guess Who's Coming to the Museum?.

An educated guess

Report discovers who's going to the museum Next time you’re at a new exhibition or brushing up on some local history, look around and see who’s in the Museum of the Riverina. Chances are half the crowd would be under the age of 55, a third would have brought their kids along, another third will be there to learn new things and almost all of them will describe the museum as “terrific” or “good”. Museum and Galleries (M&G) NSW launched a new state-wide report Guess Who’s Going to Museum? at the Historic Council Chambers site on 22 September, discovering what an average museum audience looks like. “It’s great to be partnering with M&G NSW to undertake this important research,” Council’s Acting General Manager Janice Summerhayes said.

“Participating in this project assists Wagga Wagga Council to appreciate contemporary trends, deliver on our visitors’ expectations, and gain a deeper understanding into the demographics of our museum visitors.” M&G NSW CEO Michael Rolfe said the report showed the Museum of the Riverina was a major tourist attraction, with visitors to Wagga learning about the history of the area and staying in the region for more than two nights. “Guess Who’s Going to the Museum? confirms museums as an accessible cultural activity and entertainment for people from all walks of life,” Mr Rolfe said. “Museums are a great place for families. It’s good to see that age, household income, level of education

and employment status are not barriers to families being able to enjoy their local museum.” Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant said museums provide valuable opportunities to help all people, particularly younger generations, gain greater insight into our rich local and national history. “Museums allow us to explore a world beyond our immediate surrounds and reinforce the stories of our past and present,” he said. “It’s pleasing to see people from all backgrounds throughout the state are enjoying and participating in arts and cultural activities.” The full version of Guess Who’s Going to the Museum? is available at mgnsw. org.au.

If 10 people were gathered around an exhibit at a museum:

• Half would be under 55; • Three would be part of a group that included children, and two will have come with their spouse or partner; • Four would have come to connect with local history while three of them are there to learn new things; • Two would have finished their schooling in highschool, and two will have a postgraduate degree; • Half will be employed either full or part-time and three of them will be retired; • Half will have a household income of under $80,000; • Four of them will be a visitor to the region and most likely to be staying more than 2 or nights; • And, almost all of them will have rated their visit as “terrific” or “good”.

Theatre to farewell Major Thomas

Major Peter Thomas will be sent off with a bang as he conducts his last Music at Midday concert on Wednesday 30 September. Having been a member of the Australian Army Band for 33 years, including 12 in Wagga with the last five as music director of Australian Army Band Kapooka, Major Thomas has had many highlights over the years. At the top of the list are his deployment to East Timor in 2000 and his recent trip to Lone Pine, Gallipoli. A number of other band members will join Major Thomas in saying farewell at Music at Midday. They will be featured as soloists, including Jade O’Halloran who will return to the Civic Theatre as Paulette in Legally Blonde The Musical this November. Civic Theatre manager Carissa Campbell said Major Thomas had been a pleasure to work with and wished him the best in the future. “Peter has helped entertain thousands of people at Music at Midday, which is always a popular event with the community,” she said. “I’d like to thank Peter for all of his hard work over the years and encourage everyone to get along and send him off in style.” Major Thomas will conduct 40 musicians

Eventful Spring in Wagga Wagga Wagga has sprung to life this spring, with countless events, festivals, markets and more held around the region. In recent weeks, the city has gained state and national exposure with events such as Afternoon Tea with the Champagne Dame, Speaker Spotlight Sessions, Riverina Truck Show and Kids Convoy, Spring Street Festival, equine events, mountain bike enduro, car club gatherings and the Wagga Lake Run and Ride. Council’s Manager Events Sally Nolan said as well as boosting the local economy, these sorts of events also add to the liveability of the city. “These events have not only attracted visitors to Wagga, but exposed the community to some high profile people including Lisa Messenger, Sara and Amy Chamberlain – The Real Estate Stylists, Tex and Bundy, the Champagne Dame and more. “The Gears and Beers event coming up on 4 October will also be bringing some big names to the city, including Olympic skier Katya Cremer and V8 Supercars driver Tony D’Alberto.

Councillor Column

The Mayoral election is on Monday night and over the past few weeks there has been

much speculation about whether there will be a successful challenge against the current Mayor. Unfortunately I will be away on Monday night due to family commitments, but I would like to make a few comments about the role of Mayor.

Leadership is not a title. One of the biggest failings I have seen with people in leadership roles (or with people who aspire to be in those roles), is that they think that the authority instilled in a certain role will make people respect you, follow you and carry out their orders. Using title, authority

councillor.mclaren@wagga.nsw.gov.au and position is a poor way to influence others. In fact, it is more likely to get the opposite outcome to what that leader hopes. Leadership is not about control but it is about freedom. Effective leadership involves constant communication and the

ability to inspire others to follow your lead. Given we are currently enjoying the Rugby World Cup, I think it only makes sense to use John Eales as an example of a leader who inspired others more so by what he did than by what he said. The Mayor’s role in Wagga Wagga is more than officiating public

events and representing the city. It is also to be a conduit between Councillors and the General Manager to ensure that the Council as a whole runs smoothly and effectively and the strategic direction of the Council is heading where the elected officials agree. Although I won’t be

able to cast a vote for Mayor on Monday night, I have come to the conclusion that the current leadership team is best placed to represent Councillors for the remainder of our term.

NOW AND THEN: The plane tree next to the Civic Theatre in 1963 (left) and in 2015 (right). Removal works are scheduled to begin on 6 October, weather permitting.

Civic Theatre plane tree to be removed due to safety concerns It’s seen countless plays, productions, musicals and more but the final curtain call has come for a beloved member of the Civic Theatre team. While its exact age isn’t known,

pictures from the early years of the Civic Theatre show the tree is well established. A semi-mature plane tree will be planted as a replacement, slightly further north of the existing tree. “Trees are an extremely important part of our community,” Ms Summerhayes said.

“They add to the liveability of our city and provide a green corridor for local birds and wildlife. “Council staff have organised a replacement tree, which will already be two to three metres high.” Work is expected to start on Tuesday 6 October, weather permitting.
