make the most of our city! Art and Culture is a unique way for the Wagga Wagga community to get together — literature, art, history, dance, music and theatre all contribute to the complex cultural fabric of our community. Not only does it enrich our everyday lives as we go about our business, but it adds an important layer to the identity of our City and surrounds. The Arts bring vibrancy to our City, add personality and give us a chance to express ourselves in different ways as well as adding greatly to the visitor experience, leaving a positive lasting impression of greater Wagga Wagga.

The Art Gallery and Civic Theatre bring us some of the Australia’s best artists and performers AND give us a chance to get our hands dirty, learn new skills and stretch our creativity. Our public spaces are enlivened by our public art — whether it’s the digital projectors illuminating our nights or sculptures in our streetscapes.

Through Museum exhibitions such as BUMALDHAANY FIGHTER WARRIOR - REMEMBERING OUR ABORINGINAL SOLDIERS we learn about Wiradjuri men in WWI and WW2, while at the Library we discover new worlds through books, keep up with technology and listen to poets and writers.

Be curious and enjoy!

Council is committed to the development of Wagga Wagga as a thriving, innovative and connected regional centre, where culture and creativity engage and involve the whole community.

BUMALDHAANY FIGHTER WARRIOR REMEMBERING OUR ABORIGINAL SOLDIERS

There is something special about seeing the writing of pioneers from our early beginnings and reading letters to loved ones from a bygone age. We are touched by old diaries and scribbled notes. This exhibition explores collections of handwritten words spanning two centuries. Discover tiny yet meaningful moments of history.

The Wiradjuri men highlighted in this exhibition were compelled by dual loyalties to join up to the First and Second World Wars. They were fighting for Australia and the ideology of freedom; yet, they were also acting as responsible men of their Traditional Nations, to protect their families and Country.

THE SAUNTERING EMU AND OTHER STORIES: LIFE WITH THE BIRDS OF THE RIVERINA

In Common is a photographic survey of place, mapping iconic co-ordinates throughout the Riverina. The work forms a catalogue of architecture and objects from over 100 towns in the region, from major public works buildings to quirky tourist traps usually seen only as glimpses from a car window.

Since European settlement, sizeable populations of Sea-eagles have moved to inland waterways, like the Murrumbidgee, due to the building of reservoirs and dams and the introduction of European Carp. Meet this new addition to the Sauntering Emu exhibition, generously donated to the Museum by Rebecca Gorman and John Sevior.

Civic Malaise exhibits large-scale urban landscape photographs, and is the final chapter of Holcombe’s Civic Melancholy project. Ultimately a nexus between our urban “civic” environment and our collective behaviour, it investigates our impact on, and sometimes our apparent denial of the life cycle of a diversity of regional Australian locations.

This installation explores the female voice and the influences that shape internal dialogues by depicting portraits of the subconscious. It invites the viewer in to a private and confessional world where thoughts and feelings unfold through a feminist frame.

SHINE FOR KIDS: COLOURFUL DREAMING PROGRAM

EVANESCENT: JOSHUA THOMAS AND CHIU YIN TSANG

As part of local community celebrations during NAIDOC Week 2015, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in partnership with SHINE for Kids is proud to showcase an exhibition of Indigenous artwork created by the talented participants of the Colourful Dreaming Program.

Evanescent is a series of rural landscape photographs that present themselves as our last example of failed environmental activism. By creating images that appeal to the emotions of the viewer, Evanescent aims to provoke a greater need for connection between the audience and the landscape in which they exist.

BEHIND THE TRUTH

CHRISTINA REID: EVERYTHING IS TRUE

The images in this exhibition are drawn from the collections of the State Library of NSW and question the role of truth in photography in different ways. They caution against the use of photographs as factual historical resources without understanding the story behind the image.

Christina Reid is a Wagga based artist, primarily working as a printmaker, exploring the boundaries of ownership, whether through photographs or drawings, and their relationship to memory. The melding of reality, false memory, and real memory often means that different people will have different memories of the same event: so which is true?

WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD: WAGGA WOMEN DURING WWI

From the nurses who risked their lives, to the ladies who worked tirelessly on the home front, Australia’s female population was instrumental to the war effort. WWI not only changed the lives of the men who fought, but also the women who worried and waited for news of their loved ones.

Above: Private Harold Charles Lewitz, born at Gregadoo, Wagga. Harold was 19 years old when he enlisted, and saw active service in the Middle East and France with the 60th Battalion. Image: private collection.

HE BELONGED TO WAGGA: OUR ANZAC STORY (19141919) When war was declared in Europe on 4 August 1914, the men of Wagga Wagga answered the call to arms. From the Kangaroo March of 1915 to the battlefields and beyond, He Belonged to Wagga reveals the personal stories of those who enlisted, through original artefacts, photographs and firsthand accounts.
