Join the Dots About NAVA

NAVA is the national peak body for the visual and media arts, craft and design sector. Through advocacy and service provision, they work to achieve a strong Australian visual arts sector and a vibrant, distinctive and ethical cultural environment. Since its establishment in 1983, NAVA has been successful in securing policy and legislative change to encourage the growth and development of the sector and to increase professionalism within the industry. NAVA sets and monitors adherence to best practice standards. It also undertakes advocacy, research, policy and project development, data collection and analysis. It provides direct service to its members and the sector generally by offering expert advice, referrals, resources, professional representation and development, grant programs, education and training courses and events, and a range of other opportunity brokerage and career development services.

About Arts Law

Arts Law provides legal advice and information on a wide range of arts related legal and business matters including contracts, copyright, business structures, defamation, insurance, employment and taxation to artists and arts organisations across all art forms. Arts Law is Australia’s independent national community legal centre for the arts, a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. It provides free or low cost specialised legal advice, education and resources to Australian artists and arts organisations across all art forms, on a wide range of arts related legal and business matters. Arts Law’s Artists in the Black program delivers targeted services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists nationally.

Eastern Riverina Arts will provide information on the latest grant opportunities for artists and where you can find them. This workshop will include a grant writing session teaching you the tips and tricks when applying for your very own grant.

ARTS LAW- LAWS Thurs 25 June THAT AFFECT 2pm-5pm ARTISTS- PART 1 E3 art space, Wagga Wagga City Council

Arts Law will be discussing the laws and regulations that affect artists on a daily basis including copyright, licensing copyright, moral rights, the ins and outs of contracts, and some insurance basics.

CREATING A PORTFOLIO TO MARKETING YOURSELF AS AN ARTIST

NAVA will provide industry knowledge on how to: • write the perfect artist statement and CV • develop your individual brand • price your work • complete an artwork inventory • create a marketing plan • create an online presence through websites and social media • deal with rejection from grant agencies • tap into national artist networks • find and maintain a mentor throughout your career • embrace practical opportunities to exhibit your work • work in partnership with galleries • understand a formal agreement • understand the 3 C’s: consignment, contracts and commission

Experienced artists and experts from the art industry will be participating in a panel discussion on key cultural and political issues impacting on Indigenous artists today.

In this 2 part workshop you will learn different ways to represent yourself as an artist in the online world.

Bring 3 pieces of your art/products and together with an experienced photographer you will learn techniques to professionally photograph your art and creations for your portfolio. Wagga Wagga City Council Art Gallery and Eastern Riverina Arts will provide information on local networks and opportunities to market, display and sell your work with practical knowledge and tips around how to speak about and present your works to potential sellers and exhibitors.

Learn how to better protect your art and culture in an informative workshop looking at Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual property and some of the protocols and codes for working with Indigenous art. Arts Law will look at the gaps between copyright and protecting Indigenous heritage, and advise how you could use contracts to address this. Arts Law will also cover the resale royalty.
