Last autumn, we discovered edgy street art winding its way along the back of Fitzmaurice Street’s cafes and boutique stores. We stayed out after dark enjoying cocktails with friends.
Wagga + Surrounds region is for you. There are hidden gems at every turn, from plucking your own strawberries straight from the plant, to guided tours that share indigenous stories thousands of years old.
One frosty winter we explored beautiful bushland trails before feasting on hearty food in front of the fire at our favourite restaurant.
We've been here with friends and roadtripped the region - camera in hand. We’ve visited unique towns and vibrant villages, boasting locally made delights - chocolate, cheese and craft brews - to discovering iconic Australian history, scenery, wildlife and more.
And spring ... we were wowed by the iridescent yellow of the canola fields and a thriving city alive with festivals and bountiful fresh produce to enjoy. Wagga Wagga is a new city every season. The backdrop changes, but there’s still so much to explore and experience. From cellar door tastings at the boutique vineyards to the delicate details of woven textiles, everything you see and taste is handmade and handpicked with authenticity and passion. If you like to be in a place where you don’t know all the answers, then the Wagga
And afterwards, you wind your way back to Wagga Wagga - just like the meandering Murrumbidgee River that runs through our Riverina region. Wagga Wagga is a place where we've made so many memories. Sunrises and sunsets stretch wide across the horizon, teasing new adventures to be explored. And, we'll never forget the night sky, cloaked in a blanket of glittering stars. Let’s stay another day and discover more about this beautiful part of Australia.

MORNING 6am: Horizons are wider in Wagga Wagga. Find out by capturing the early morning sunrise at picturesque spots like Lake Albert, Pomingalarna Reserve or Riverside: Wagga Beach. 8am: By now your stomach must be grumbling, so grab some gourmet grub down the Fitzmaurice Street end of the city. Pop into Sista Sparrow, Café Sonder, Fitzmaurice Café, Uneke Lounge or Trail Street Coffee Shop for something sweet or savory and, of course, a great barista-made cuppa. 10am: It’s time to stretch the legs. Immerse yourself in local Wiradjuri culture and native flora and fauna on a self-guided tour at Marrambidya Wetland. Instead of taking the car, why not take the Wiradjuri Walking Track from Wagga Wagga’s CBD.
NOON 12pm: Hungry after all that fresh air? Follow the locals and head to one of our city’s favourite watering holes. Fit right in by using the pubs classic nicknames – it’s an Aussie thing. Take your pick for lunch from

Spin the bottle and head for the cellar door at Boutique Wines by CSU, Cottontails Winery, Borambola Wines or Eunonyhareenyha Winery (or, why not try them all – you’ve got time and we won’t judge!). When you’re back in the city’s hub, wander through the picturesque Victory Memorial Gardens, or stop by the Museum of the Riverina for a peek into Wagga Wagga’s history.
NIGHT 6pm: Fancy a little slice of luxury for dinner? Then make a reservation at Wagga Wagga’s Magpies Nest Restaurant or The Oakroom Kitchen & Bar. The atmosphere is one of community, which also translates to the menu, with both restaurants heroing local produce and flavours. For an even more unique experience, why not plan ahead and book a spot at one of The Roundabout Restaurant's special degustation evenings, held on selected dates throughout the year.

8pm: Dinner and a show? Sure. Head on down to the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre, showing everything from international to local productions almost every night of the week. If it’s time for a night cap or two, Wagga Wagga’s iconic Thirsty Crow Brewing Co. is a must-visit. Can’t decide on which brew to try? Then grab a tasting board and sample a few. Prefer a cocktail? Head to Que bar set above Baylis Street, Bay85, Birdhouse Bar & Kitchen or The Hampden, where the in-house mixologists will shake up a classic – martini perhaps? Or your own favourite.

L ARGER THAN LIFE Behind the Fitzmaurice Street eateries and boutique stores is a sprawling collection of larger-than-life murals dotted along Cadell Place. Choose to check them out at ground level or take a bird’s eye view from the top of the Wiradjuri Walking Track beside the Murrumbidgee River. The Cadell Place murals are a creative legacy of the city’s newest festival, Lost Lanes – a micro winter festival held in June which combines arts, street food and music. The murals have become a great city attraction so make sure your smartphone or camera is on-hand for the perfect shot or selfie when you wander the laneway.

WE TL AND WANDERINGS Marrambidya means big water in Wiradjuri language and reflects the traditional name of the Murrumbidgee River that the wetland is nestled against. Marrambidya Wetland is a stunning 20 hectare reserve teeming with flora and fauna - what can you spot as you explore the ponds? “The best thing about Wagga Wagga is the beautiful Marrambidya (Murrumbidgee River), the birdlife, the serenity you can find just outside the city centre and the amazing green, open spaces to explore.”
Take a self-guided tour, there’s plenty of informative signage to read - and hear along the way to learn more about the wildlife and plants that call the wetland home. There's also bird hides and vantage points to admire the wildlife or snap the perfect photo - don’t miss a sunrise here, you won’t be disappointed.
AUNTY CHERYL PENRITH WIRADJURI WOMAN
From Wiradjuri artworks at the entrance to a hand-carved totem, the wetland is a significant place to wander and discover more about Wagga Wagga’s Wiradjuri culture. Be sure to take time to reflect at the Healing Place, which also features plants traditionally used by the Wiradjuri people.
