TURNING TREADS Go rollin’ on the river, and beyond, when you visit Wagga Wagga + Surrounds. Road rider, mountain biker or a family of recreational riders, there’s a trail to suit all cyclists in our region. Bring your own bike or hire one from a local bike shop. For a relaxing pedal, taking in city sights, start in the CBD and follow the Murrumbidgee River. You’ll pass by Riverside: Wagga Beach, laneway murals, then on to Marrambidya Wetland to connect with nature and culture. For the road riders, head out beyond the city limits and explore our back roads leading to quaint towns and villages. Cycle between bright yellow canola fields and chase sunrises that stretch across the horizon. 8
Looking to up the adventure ante? Mountain bikers will love the free-flowing bushland trails at Wagga Wagga’s Pomingalarna Reserve. A little further south, you’ll find Livingstone National Park with its 4.3km multi-use loop track. For a full-day adventure, pack the bikes and head to the nearby Snowy Mountains region to cycle the 22km (one way) Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail. ALL ROADS LEAD TO WAGGA WAGGA Now, more than ever, is the right time to pack the boot or hook up the caravan and head out on the open road to explore. Halfway between Sydney and Melbourne and at the intersection of two of the state’s major highways – the Olympic and Sturt highways – Wagga Wagga is pretty easy to find. Stop in at boutique vineyards and rustic cafés serving the freshest gate to plate

produce. Detour to discover nature, from idyllic river beaches and secluded overnight camp spots, to trekking trails and spying cuddly koalas. And, all this on the roads leading into Wagga Wagga, with so much more to uncover once you arrive. We’ve put together suggested itineraries for those arriving from some of our major cities.

Road tripping in Wagga Wagga + Surrounds

> Bypass the highway major fast food chains and stop off at the charming Long Track Pantry. Located in Jugiong – just past the half way point in your trip – Long Track offers fresh, seasonal dishes and homemade treats to take with you. Continue south towards Gundagai and consider booking a night at the well-appointed eco huts at Kimo Estate – with breathtaking sweeping views over our sprawling Riverina countryside. Wake the next morning and follow the signs to Wagga Wagga on the A20. About 20 minutes outside of Wagga Wagga stop off at Borambola Wines and enjoy a tasting at their cellar door. 13
CBR > WGA > A leisurely three-hour drive is all it takes to get from Canberra to Wagga Wagga. So, why not take the road less travelled when coming from our nation’s capital. At Gundagai take the town exit and head for Nangus Road. Follow along, through sweeping countryside, until you reach Oura Road. Once on Oura Road take your pick of Wagga Wagga vineyards – The Wild Vine, Eunonyhareenyha Winery or Cottontail Wines. Looking for a place to rest? Book in at Belisi Farmstay, a luxury cottage made from recycled shipping containers along Oura Road.
MEL > WGA > Head north for about four hours on the Hume Highway and take the Holbrook exit to our neighbouring Greater Hume shire. Here see the 290ft HMAS Otway submarine in the centre of Holbrook, then head off to explore Woomargama National Park – a great spot for hiking and 4WD touring. There’s also Morgan’s Lookout in the nearby town of Culcairn, a location to explore Australian Bushranger history and take in scenic views. While in Culcairn also check out the 7km bike and walking trail – great family fun. Still keen on more outdoor adventures? Continue on the Holbrook Road towards Wagga Wagga and stop off at Livingstone National Park – great for mountain biking and see the incredible grass trees or wildflowers in spring.
ADL > WGA > The ultimate road trip – about 900km one way on the Sturt Highway. Take a few days to make your way east from Adelaide. Once in the Riverina region stop off or stay in Narrandera – spot koalas or have a splash at Lake Talbot Water Park. From Narrandera choose to head to the charming heritage town of Lockhart, then reach new heights by hiking up The Rock Nature Reserve – Kengal Aboriginal Place or Galore Hill. Or, head towards the regional townships of Coolamon and Junee to taste cheese and chocolate. On your way into Wagga Wagga on the Olympic Highway pull into Wollundry Grove Olives to taste and purchase delicious table olives and olive oil, all grown and made onsite.

COOLAMON on your whey Wander through Coolamon's heritage main street and explore boutique shops, cafes and museums - just a half hour drive from Wagga Wagga.
& Cheese located in the impressive Coolamon Cheese Co building. Indulge in cheese tastings and watch the cheese being handcrafted and matured.
Visit the historic 1900s Up-to-Date Store with its original fittings and displays. The store is home to the Gullaman, Garth Jones, Mavis Furner and Reg Godde Collections.
Before leaving the area be sure to take a short drive to one (or more) of the quaint surrounding towns, choose from Ganmain, Ardlethan, or the smaller villages of Marrar, Matong and Beckom.
See how firefighting has evolved at the Coolamon Fire Museum, which is home to thousands of firefighting items from all over Australia and the world.

JUNEE railway getaway Junee is a short half-hour drive from Wagga Wagga and is brimming with things to do. Soak in the region's colourful countryside and beautifully preserved historical buildings dating back to the 1800s. Railway buffs will be mesmerised by the largest working railway roundhouse in the southern hemisphere, and if that’s not enough, be sure to take a visit to the Bethungra Rail Spiral, one of only two 360-degree rail spirals of its type in Australia. Whether you’re a true believer or just curious, Australia’s most famous haunted house, the legendary Monte Cristo Homestead, attracts people from across the world. While there, don’t miss the doll museum, an incredible growing collection of old, new and handmade dolls.
Make sure you visit the Broadway Museum and pop into the Junee Visitor Information Centre. Make the most of your visit and see the surrounding villages of Old Junee, Bethungra, Wantabadgery, Eurongilly and Illabo. Also, plan your visit to coincide with festivals and events such as the Junee Poker Run and Blues Night, Christmas on Broadway, Riverina Schoolboys Football Carnival, Junee and Illabo Agricultural Shows or the plentiful Junee Farmers Market held the first Sunday of every month. A short drive out of town and you can explore the natural beauty of Bethungra Dam and Sandy Beach Reserve – both great spots for camping.

TEMORA high flying history Temora boasts three museums and immaculately preserved historic buildings, all set against the beautiful landscape of the Canola Trail. A must-see is the Temora Aviation Museum, home of arguably the world’s finest collection of flying warbird aircraft including the only two flying Spitfires and the oldest flying Tiger Moth in Australia. Time a visit to the region to catch one of the spectacular flying display days hosted by the museum. Explore more than three acres of historic Australian treasures at the Bundawarrah Centre (formerly the Temora Rural Museum), featuring changing exhibitions, the Ambulance Museum, Australian cricketer’s Sir Donald Bradman’s first home and the Wiradjuri Keeping Place. Grab a picnic and head to Lake Centenary to watch the V8 jetboats in action or for a more relaxing day of swimming, water skiing or fishing.

COOTAMUNDRA big hitters Stop by the Heritage Centre, located in a former railway barracks built in 1927, for fascinating local history. Then delve into Australian cricketing history at (Sir Donald) Bradman’s birthplace cottage, which has been lovingly restored and filled with memorabilia. Take a stroll along the Captains Walk in Jubilee Park featuring bust sculptures of Australia Test Cricket captains. Cycle the regions many quiet roads or hike to the top of Pioneer Park for wonderful views. Take a scenic drive passing by some of Australia’s best wheat and canola country and visit the historic villages of Wallendbeen and Stockinbingal.
GUNDAGAI aussie icons An iconic town set against the picturesque Murrumbidgee River. Learn about infamous bushranger Captain Moonlite at The Old Gundagai Gaol and discover more local history at the Gundagai Museum and Heritage Railway Museum. Stop by the beautiful sculpture honouring Wiradjuri flood heroes Yarri and Jacky Jacky in the main street. Rusconi’s Marble Masterpiece located at the Visitor Information Centre is sure to surprise and delight. The town’s best mate, the Dog on the Tuckerbox, is eight kilometers north of the RV-friendly town.
