Welcome to the 2017 Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre Season. We start the year with a new logo which is based on the original bricks that line the side of the theatre. As the Civic Theatre evolves we will always celebrate our past and our new logo is one way we are doing that. In this year’s season we have invited companies from all around Australia to take part. From Queensland we have shake and stir with their new stage adaptation of Dracula and from the Tasmanian Theatre Company we have John Wood in the true story of Bakersfield Mist. From Victoria, Circus Oz returns with their new show Model Citizens. At the Riverina Playhouse we will stage Hello, Goodbye and Happy Birthday which originated at Malthouse Theatre. Victoria is also the home of Hit Productions whose previous shows include The 39 Steps and Educating Rita, this year they present the comedy about Florence Foster Jenkins, Glorious! From South Australia we have the James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra with band members from James Morrison’s new Jazz Academy in Mt Gambier and we welcome the State Theatre Company of South Australia with the Australian comedy classic, Popular Mechanicals. Our own state of New South Wales is the home of The Song Company who will perform a special A capella concert in the Wagga Art Gallery, the Sydney Dance Company who return to Wagga after an absence of five years and Bell Shakespeare with Shakespeare’s great play of gender, politics and money; The Merchant of Venice. The final show of the year is the community production of the Broadway smash hit, Wicked. 2017 will also include our children’s season, Silver Circle, Music at Midday, Twilight by the Lagoon, Hall-a-Day Adventures and the Wagga Comedy Fest. It is going to a huge year for the theatre. We hope you can join us.

Carissa Campbell Manager, Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY

SAT U R DAY 8 J U LY 7. 3 0 P M

FRAME OF MIND Sydney Dance Company’s Frame of Mind is a wildly powerful double bill featuring the smash hit Wildebeest by Australia’s own Gabrielle Nankivell and the multi awardwinning Frame of Mind from Rafael Bonachela. Bonachela’s Frame of Mind features a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner (from American hit rock band The National), recorded by San Francisco’s virtuosic Kronos Quartet. Winner of all four categories for the 2015 Helpmann Awards including ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Dance Work’, ‘Best Male Dancer’, and ‘Best Female Dancer’ for its critically acclaimed premiere season. Having premiered as part of Sydney Dance Company’s inaugural New Breed season, choreographic prodigy Gabrielle Nankivell’s eloquent Wildebeest showcases the power of dancers as individuals and strength en masse. Moody and animalistic, it’s backed by a stormy and industrial score by Luke Smiles.

HELLO, GOODBYE & HAPPY BIRTHDAY BY ROSLYN OADES & COLLABORATORS TOURED BY PERFORMING LINES

Roslyn Oades went to an 18th and an 80th birthday party in close succession. Her Malthouse Theatre and Melbourne Festival hit Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday celebrates these two milestone birthdays; major transition points in adult life. One represents untold potential and opportunity; the other a lifetime of experiences, aspirations, fears and memories. Scripted from intimate real-life conversations with people either side of these milestones, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday is a beautifully warm and human new show from Roslyn Oades & Collaborators. Playful and affecting in equal measure, this show sees Oades continue her ground-breaking ‘headphone verbatim’ documentary theatre technique, to create extraordinarily immediate and vivid performances.

THÉRÈSE RAQUIN ADAPTED FROM THE EMILE ZOLA NOVEL BY GARY ABRAHAMS A DIRTY PRETTY THEATRE & CRITICAL STAGES PRODUCTION

Thérèse Raquin is a superb examination of corrupted morals, set in the notoriously dingy backstreets of Paris in the late 19th century. Thérèse lives a life of servitude and is married off to her sickly cousin in a loveless, arranged marriage. But her life is suddenly turned around when her husband’s friend, Laurent, arrives and they begin a passionate, feverish affair. What follows in

Beautifully paced and engaging theatre...an imaginative and immersive adaptation, directed with skill and style. TH E AG E

this masterpiece of French literature makes for a gripping, corseted thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Dirty Pretty Theatre is one of Melbourne’s most exciting independent companies. This stunning, critically acclaimed, production was nominated for six 2014 Green Room Awards in all categories of design, direction and performance. Director Gary Abrahams (whose recent work includes Buyer and Cellar for Melbourne Theatre Company and Resident Alien with actor Paul Capsis) has crafted an original and uniquely Australian adaptation of a renowned classic work of French literature, bringing to the production a heightened sense of melodrama and a raw and immediate passion. Thérèse Raquin is a genuinely affecting, thrilling, emotional rollercoaster.

BY STEPHEN SACHS PRESENTED BY THE TASMANIAN THEATRE COMPANY AND STRAIGHTJACKET PRODUCTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE KARRALYKA CENTRE

Is the true value of art in the eyes of the beholder? Maude (Julie Nihill), an unemployed bartender, has bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite almost trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact she’s certain it is. But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy (John Wood), flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover.

A thoroughly entertaining 85 minutes of quipping arguing, boozing, opining, fistfighting and soul-baring. THE TIMES

GLORIOUS!

SAT U R DAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2 P M + 7. 3 0 P M

BY PETER QUILTER

Glorious! tells the hilarious true story of the world’s worst opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins. This West End and world-wide hit was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award - Best New Comedy (2005) and has been seen by two million plus people across six continents. Starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, the movie Florence Foster Jenkins inspired by the play was released to acclaim in 2016. In the 1940s the singer everyone wanted to see perform live in New York was the enthusiastic soprano Florence Foster Jenkins - ' the first lady of the sliding scale'. Surrounding herself by devoted friends, almost as eccentric as she, this deliciously happy and delusional woman paid scant attention to her critics and would screech and warble to her audiences, most falling about with laughter.

A delightful and blissfully funny play that generates a rare glow of warmth and generous laughter. D A I LY T E L E G R A P H

This heart-warming comedy moves from Florence's charity recitals and lavish balls, through to her very odd recording sessions and her ultimate performance triumph at New York’s Carnegie Hall, incorporating her wonderfully colourful relationships along the way. Diana McLean as Florence (best known for The Young Doctors, Number 96 and All Saints) and Lyall Brooks as Cosme head the cast of three.

BELL SHAKESPEARE’S

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE “All that glisters is not gold; Often have you heard that told.” Act 2 Scene 7 Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. Featuring three time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, the production will be directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea), this masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.

A STATE THEATRE COMPANY SOUTH AUSTRALIA PRODUCTION

THE POPULAR MECHANICALS BY KEITH ROBINSON, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND TONY TAYLOR ORIGINAL DIRECTION BY GEOFFREY RUSH

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the theatre this evening. Shakespeare’s greatest clowns—the rude mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream— take centre stage in this wild reimagining of what might have happened off-stage during the Bard’s most loved comedy.

T U E S DAY 2 4 O C TO B E R 7. 3 0 P M

Monty Python eat your heart out; what a hoot this show is... I give it 5 rubber chooks out of 5. S TA G E W H I S P E R S

Perhaps the most famous group of amateur thespians of all time, the cast of the play-within-a-play Pyramus and Thisbe, bumble their way through rehearsals, misadventures and sheer idiocy in an hysterically funny mix of verse, song and dance. Using snippets of the existing text of A Midsummer Night’s Dream along with a gloriously cod version of Shakespearean English, the play exalts in its own roughness, extravagance of expression and frequent obscenity—in the nicest possible way. Clowning, vaudeville, slapstick, farce, stand-up comedy and bad puppetry come together with both witty badinage and fart jokes to create an anarchic and thrillingly unhinged carnival that revels in its own theatricality. First directed by Geoffrey Rush in 1987, The Popular Mechanicals holds a special place in the Australian comedic canon and is ripe for revival with a cast of our best theatrical clowns and directed by former Sydney Theatre Company Resident Director, Sarah Giles. A perfect romp that promises to lift the roof in the silliest ways imaginable.

More stories based on the much-loved picture book character created by Ted Prior. Grug began his life as the grassy top of a Burrawang tree; fascinated by the world around him and never short of an adventure, now he’s back by popular demand. Embarking on his own epic journey to find a rainbow, it always seems just beyond his grasp. But Grug is full of determination and his adventures are always full of surprises. Featuring exquisite puppetry and more of the gentle storytelling that has delighted audiences around the world, this new show has been especially created for the next generation of our littlest theatregoers (and those who just love Grug).

LUCKIEST PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

EVE RY B O DY LOVE S LUCY W E D N E S DAY 2 8 J U N E 1 1 A M | F R E E M O R N I N G T E A F R O M 1 0A M Lucille Ball was the Queen of American comedy for decades. As television’s biggest star in I Love Lucy – the most popular sitcom in American history - the wacky, fearless, and totally endearing Lucy broke the mould for the way women were allowed to behave on TV. Lucy was joined every step of the way by her reallife and on-screen husband Desi Arnaz. Together they defied conventions and expectations, and ensured total control by creating their own studio. Lucy and Desi held up a fun-house mirror to every marriage in America - exaggerating and making amusing every idiosyncrasy of married life. But as Lucy’s popularity thrived, her relationship with Desi suffered both professionally and privately. Generations of fans love Lucy Ricardo for her impulsive, foolhardy and child-like charm – but the producer of I Love Lucy once said “Lucille Ball is about as different from Lucy Ricardo as anyone could possibly be.” She was a dedicated professional whose seemingly effortless comedy was a result of rigorous attention to detail and fanatical rehearsing. Brimming with Lucille Ball’s irrepressible spirit, Luckiest Productions present a tribute to a true trail-blazer. This cabaret-style show is a treat for audiences young and old. SILVER CIRCLE
