City of Wagga Wagga
SIGNAGE STYLE GUIDE
PURPOSE OF THE STYLE GUIDE
This style guide has been prepared by the City of Wagga Wagga’s Marketing and Communications Team to assist in the selection, production and installation of signs in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. The guide was created to bring harmony, consistency and ensure quality construction replication. The guide aims to link all signage elements with the City of Wagga Wagga corporate stationary suite by using consistent colours, fonts, logos and materials. A colour coded system helps to break up the large quantities of information and provides a hierarchy to the signage system.
Version control: April 2019
Responsibility for updating the guide, approving non standard signs and resolving sign usage issues lie with; and any queries regarding signs should be directed to: Graphic Designer Ph: 6926 9195 E: media@wagga.nsw.gov.au Wagga Wagga City Council Cnr Baylis & Morrow Streets Wagga Wagga NSW 2650

PROCEDURE
DISTRIBUTING THE GUIDE Marketing and Communications will maintain and distribute the Style Guide. An electronic version (in PDF form) will be available on the City of Wagga Wagga website. All signage will be designed and installed in compliance with the specifications outlined in the guide. All new signage proposals must be submitted to Marketing and Communications for review and approval.
a) Compare each new sign to ensure the sign maintains a consistent City of Wagga Wagga brand b) Review the proposal for conformity with these signage standards c) Make recommendations regarding non standard signage requests d) Provide final approval so that sign may be completed and installed e) Arrange artwork, manufacture and installation if required
NEW AND EXISTING SIGNAGE All new signage will adhere to this style guide so as not to dilute the new system or provide contradictory information. Missing or damaged signage will also be replaced with signs from this guide.
New construction and renovation projects
Signage shall be included in the scope and budget for new construction and renovation projects including demolition of obsolete signs.
Existing signage
The long term vision is for all existing signage to be removed and replaced. The only exception to this is where an external signage element is an integral aspect of the architecture or has historical significance.
Materials, finishes and fixings
The signage design, and material selection, was carefully chosen to reflect the City’s brand position. High quality materials, finishes and fixtures were selected to ensure longevity and a lasting quality appearance. The signage system requires durable materials and fittings that will; • Minimise vandalism • Be easily installed and removed if need be • Be low in maintenance
Maintenance
City of Wagga Wagga signs must be kept in good condition. A regular inspection program is recommended to check the following; • That the sign has not been vandalised or
removed
• The legibility of the message • The condition of the paintwork, materials and
fixtures are kept at a high standard
Leaving redundant signs undermines the authority of other signage and as such, signage is to be reviewed with respect to other signs and changing circumstances. Signs which have outlived their usefulness should be removed.

BRANDING AND LOGO USAGE
The signage style guide is consistent with the current City of Wagga Wagga corporate style guide and aims to strengthen the City’s image. The colour selection is sympathetic to the existing brand colours – no new colours are to be added to this palette. Our corporate identity is our public face and reflects our values of professionalism, accountability and trust. It is a tangible way of demonstrating the forward-thinking and fresh approach we take to our operations; the pride we have in our community; and the many ways the City provides services to ensure the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area is an exciting place to live, work and invest.
LOGO The correct corporate logo for outdoor signage is the ‘City of Wagga Wagga’ variant. Shown right are the acceptable formats for the logo.

INCORRECT LOGO USAGE Where the logo is used on signage, there should be strict adherence to the brand guidelines. The City logo must not be modified in any way. Please make sure the “do’s” and “do not’s” are followed to ensure our corporate identity is not distorted or diminished in any way.
Do not crop or cut off any part of the logo either by cropping or by running off the edge of the layout.
Do not use low quality, low resolution files.
Do not obscure the logo by placing objects on top.

TYPOGRAPHY RULES
CORPORATE TYPEFACES Using the typeface consistently throughout our documents will help reinforce a strong consistent image. It is important not to deviate from the typefaces specified. Helvetica Neue is the primary font and has been selected for its legibility and flexibility. Helevetica Neue is a simple, clean sans-serif font, which is highly effective in communicating information. Different weights within the font family can be used to illustrate a hierarchy of information if required. Arial has been selected as a secondary font if Helvetica cannot be acquired. Professional graphic designers and sign writers should have both fonts in their library.
Text will appear in light colours (white) on a dark background (blue or black) – internationally established as the most legible approach in an outdoor environment.

ACCESSIBILITY & INCLUSION
Ensuring that our city signage is designed and constructed with consideration for accessibility and inclusion should be an indispensible part of our process. Signs provide useful, informative and often critical, safety-related information to residents and visitors to our city. This information must be accessible to all, regardless of their ability. This is of particular importance in the implementation of wayfinding, interpretive and advisory signage situated at the pedestrian level. Producing accessible and inclusive signs requires: • Taking height into consideration and ensuring that
those of short stature and those using wheelchairs are able to read the sign content.
• Placement of signs is situated with appropriate
clearance to accommodate for users of varying ability and ensuring there are no obstructions in close proximity to the sign, such as bins, benches etc.
• Amending sign copy to maximise legibility and use
of simplified plain English wherever possible to assist those with limited language skills.
• Ensuring text is appropriately sized for legibility and
for viewing at a distance.
• Application of colour aims for high level of contrast
to maximise legibility of coloured text and text placed over coloured backgrounds.
• Use of symbols/icons as outlined in our system
wide graphics (p16) which are interpreted more readily and bridge language barriers.
• Consistent design in use of colour, typography
and layout to establish visual linkage and assist in guiding people on a path.
• In the context of interpretive signage, giving
consideration to signs that are interactive and allow for other sensory experiences in addition to visual/ text information, such as audio recordings and tactile/moveable features.
DISABILITY INCLUSION ACTION PLAN - PROVISIONS FOR ACCESSIBILE SIGNAGE The below items outline the requirements that Wagga Wagga City Council has specified with regards to our signage in our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2017-2021.
Project owner must review language used in their signage to ensure it is inclusive and focuses on accessibility, ability and inclusion, and reflects best practice for inclusive sign design. Project owner must ensure that new signage installed includes provisions for accessibility and where appropriate, Braille is included in high usage pedestrian areas.

Willans Hill Park Reserve This reserve was proclaimed in 1887, named after William Willans who owned an 80-acre farm on the north-western side. The area was originally used for firewood collection, grazing and gold mining, but gravel and rock were also extracted for the development of Wagga Wagga. Since the 1950s, Willans Hill Reserve has been revitalised with trees replanted from 1951-57, and walking tracks and picnic areas developed in 1958. The lookouts were developed in 1960 in association with the sealing of Captain Cook Drive and contour banks were constructed in the 1960s. Willans Hill is regularly used by the community for walking, running and mountain biking.

Directional signage is fairly self-explanatory however it is important these signs are the right size, are in good condition and have a consistent message. Directional signs must be large enough to read while in motion, if you can’t process the information at first glance, most won’t return for a second look. It is important for someone to review your plan of directional sign locations from an outside point of view, as it is easy for locals to assume visitors will make the same directional choices. The City of Wagga Wagga uses standard on-street parking signs for people who seek quick convenient parking in the City. For those seeing longer parking periods such as 2hr or all day parking, there are long-term bays spread out across the CBD. It is important these signs are clear and concise so the driver can find the relevant time for the period they wish to park.

INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE
Most interpretive signs are custom designed by the City’s graphic designer and match an existing brief with an overall theme and message that relate to one another. Interpretive signs are used to orient and provide information for people on foot. Most signs carry written and pictorial information, which relates directly to what the visitor is seeing or experiencing. Due to the many purposes and designs which may be used on interpretive signs, this manual is not prescriptive on their design other than the placement of the City of Wagga Wagga logo on the signage it its correct form.

TEMPORARY SIGNAGE A temporary sign is often used to change or inform visitors of an upcoming or existing project. The length of text needs to be carefully considered to ensure a clear message is expressed. It is important to remember that this is not a flyer or promotional poster. Keep the message clear, simple and uncluttered. Where appropriate, include dates to inform visitors and residents about the duration and relevance of the sign. Temporary signs are designed to be removed after the project is completed. Please ensure there is a removal date in the project plan as old messages can be confusing and look very unprofessional.
