Welcome

I am really excited to share our 2023 theatre season with you. We have four shows for younger audiences based on classic books including Roald Dahl’s hilarious and chaotic, The Twits and the Alison Lester classic family trip around Australia Are We There Yet? We are bringing back a very popular production we had a few years ago of Possum Magic are bringing to the stage for the first time, Andy Griffith’s JUST Tricking, Annoying, Stupid, Crazy, Disgusting, Shocking, Doomed LIVE ON STAGE!

We’ve started to see a lot of high school students coming to evening performances. An evening excursion is a chance to dress up, take selfies and experience the theatre outside of the time pressures of the school day. It’s easier for teachers as well with parents doing the drop off and no need to get a relief teacher. We have a great start to the year with 360 Allstars which is a brilliant urban circus with a live percussion soundtrack. The Australian Chamber Orchestra live in concert, Bell Shakespeare’s new production of Twelfth Night and many other great shows round out the year of entertainment.

There is so much on offer throughout the year, workshops, classes, competitions and special events. We are looking forward to connecting with you in 2023.

The Twits is sure to nourish all of the senses

– a visual and aural feast, you and your child do not want to miss this remarkable piece of theatre.”

The Twits

FRIDAY 19 MAY, 10AM & 1PM

SATURDAY 20 MAY, 10AM & 6PM

Roald Dahl’s gruesome twosome

The Twits arrive on stage to delight and disgust, in equal measure. Proudly brought to you by multi-award winning shake & stir theatre co.

Mr and Mrs Twit are the nastiest couple you could ever hope (not) to meet. Both are on a quest to be meaner than the other – but, is there someone out there who can out-twit the Twits?

Full of trickery and wickedly-funny pranks, Dahl’s adored classic encourages us to treat others with love and care and proves that if you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams.

You’ve read the book – it’s time to experience this family classic from the wacky mind of the world’s No.1 Storyteller live on stage. You won’t believe your (glass) eyes.

FRIDAY 3 NOVEMBER, 10AM & 1PM

Mem Fox and Julie Vivas’ beloved picture book ‘ Possum Magic ’ has enchanted children for decades and Monkey Baa Theatre Company brings the paper and ink to life on stage once again!

Grandma Poss loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again. One problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food... people food. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again.

SILENCE

TUESDAY 25 JULY, 7.30PM

SILENCE is about the space in between, the conversations not being heard and the responses that are muted. Through the beating of a drum, bodies thrash through frequencies to uncover what lies in the SILENCE.

There’s SILENCE between the stars as the Emu travels across the night sky. There’s SILENCE in the dancer’s energy when they hit the cut, the rupture between rhythms and movement where the spirit world can enter. It’s also the deafening SILENCE under white noise. The same questions echoed through generations.

We have marched across Country. We have had promises made and promises broken. In SILENCE we pull the unresolved conversations from under the rug and slam them back on the table. Because the conversation about a TREATY will never be silenced.

Twelfth Night

THURSDAY 10 AUGUST, 7.30PM

Viola is shipwrecked and believes her twin Sebastian lost to the ocean. Washed up in a strange new land, determined to survive, Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario and finds work with Duke Orsino, only to fall head over heels in love with him. But Orsino is in love with Olivia, who –grieving for her brother – refuses all offers of romance. Until, that is, she meets Cesario for the first time. A whirlwind of passion ensues, leaving no one unaffected, not even Olivia’s prudish housekeeper Malvolia, played by Jane Montgomery Griffiths ( A Midsummer Night’s Dream ).

Heather Fairbairn’s fresh retelling of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy is a dark collision of hidden identities and unrequited love. Featuring all-new music by Sarah Blasko, Twelfth Night ultimately asks us to find light in the darkness.

CHAIR, THE ROYAL COMMISSION INTO NATIONAL NATURAL DISASTER ARRANGEMENTS, OCTOBER 2020

A HOTHOUSE THEATRE PRODUCTION

Unprecedented

SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER, 7.30PM

Unprecedented is a new play raging at the fault lines in the national response to the ‘Black Summer’ bushfires of 2019-20.

Meticulously researched, drawing on numerous sources, award-winning playwright Campion Decent fashions a gripping account of the fires and takes the pulse of the nation against a growing backdrop of political short-termism and a polarising media landscape.

Part verbatim, part history, and part polemic; with incisive humour and powerful tenderness Unprecedented poses urgent questions about our collective response to a devastating new scale of environmental disaster and our capacity for resilience in the face of a growing climate emergency.

Unprecedented advances the conversation Campion Decent and HotHouse Theatre commenced on Australia’s relationship to fire with their award-winning verbatim play, Embers

THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRESENT

ACO Collective Ecstatic Dances

TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER, 7.30PM

ACO Collective combines Australia’s most talented emerging string players with the professional musicians of the Australian Chamber Orchestra to create a high-energy string orchestra.

A frequent performer on the world’s most celebrated concert hall stages, British violinist Matthew Truscott leads ACO Collective in a thrilling program of dances from across the ages.

Energy permeates every turn, from the Baroque elegance of Purcell’s England to the thrill-seeking dynamism of Australian composer Holly Harrison’s Black Ice , commissioned especially for ACO Collective . The rhythmic intensity of Stravinsky’s iconic ballet Petrushka comes to life in a new arrangement for strings, before the concert closes with Bartok’s showstopper, his Divertimento for String Orchestra . Overflowing with the folk melodies of his native Hungary, it’s the perfect showcase for ACO Collective
