WE LCOM E 2020 Civic Theatre Subscription Season!
The Civic Theatre has once again delivered an annual program of entertainment to suit all ages and interests with the 2020 subscription season.
2020 marks the beginning of an interesting era in the performing arts. All over the world audiences are looking for unique experiences, performances in unusual places and food & beverage while seeing a show. So this year we are presenting two season shows this way including ARIA award winning Monsieur Camembert at Food I Am and the Edinburgh Fringe smash hit Jekyll & Hyde at Thirsty Crow Brewery. Your ticket will include the show, food and a drink.
I am proud to offer our local community a program of entertainment that rivals our capital city counterparts. In 2020 Wagga Wagga will play host to an extraordinary calibre of artists, both local and international. On display will be performance arts from cabaret and gypsy music to opera and symphony orchestra through to circus acrobatics and children’s theatre.
Back at the theatre we have some brilliant performances from Australia’s leading companies including new productions from Circus Oz performing Aurora, Sydney Dance Company with Impermanence and WOOF, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presenting Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and the new production of Carmen from Opera Australia. The season includes some thought provoking plays including Animal Farm from Shake and Stir, Lamb from Red Stitch Theatre featuring the music of Mark Seymour and Comedy of Errors from Bell Shakespeare.
This season takes a new look at theatre; with a selection of shows taking place outside the traditional tiered seating, while still offering the traditional theatre goer a plentiful offering of quality performances. With such an engaging and innovative season in 2020, it would be a lost opportunity to miss out on getting tickets. I encourage you to take a fresh look at the Theatre and see what is new. Life is better when it’s live.
2020 also includes a world premiere cabaret, Voyagers, commissioned by the Civic Theatre from Wagga writer and performer Andrew Strano who is currently studying musical theatre writing at New York University. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM
We finish the year with the end of an era. The final year of The Wharf Revue – Goodnight and Goodluck. We have booked two nights, so you don’t miss out. See you at the theatre.
We would like to acknowledge the Wiradjuri people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the theatre stands. We pay respect to the Elders both past and present of the Wiradjuri Nation and extend that respect to other Community members present.

BELL SHAKESPEARE’S THE COMEDY OF ERRORS BY WI LL I A M SH AK E SPE ARE SAT U R DAY 11 J U LY, 7. 3 0 PM
Shipwrecked and separated 25 years earlier, two sets of long-lost twins miraculously find themselves in the same city on the same day. What could possibly go wrong?
Written by William Shakespeare Director Janine Watson
The Comedy of Errors is a hilarious romp of swapped identities, misguided love, mistaken imprisonment and chaotic mishaps, leading to an unbelievably crazy day for bumbling twins. At the heart of this tale of comedic misfortune is an old man searching for his lost children who has found himself in the fight of his life…to save his life. As far-fetched coincidences unfold, chaotic hilarity ensues and a man’s life could be saved — if only everything would go to plan. Directed by Janine Watson (Romeo and Juliet, Ensemble Theatre’s Unqualified) this is a beautiful story about reunion, wrapped up in an evening of entertainment and laughter. After a day of mistaken identity leading to unfair thrashings, wrongful arrests and false charges of infidelity, robbery, madness and even demonic possession, can the twins possibly reunite and live happily ever after?

She captivates Don José with her sensual Habanera and he abandons everything to possess her. But Carmen won’t be owned and finds herself a new lover: the dashing bullfighter Escamillo. Don José’s jealousy is untameable, Escamillo’s appeal is strong, and in a gripping finale, Carmen is destined to fight for her life.

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorises and satirises communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fuelled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again. Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

A play about family, the land and being the one who stays, with original music by Mark Seymour. “Sometimes people leave, they go away and you don’t see them anymore. And then sometimes they come back.” From multi-award-winning playwright Jane Bodie, and featuring original songs by Mark Seymour (Mark Seymour and the Undertow, Hunters and Collectors), Lamb is the story of one family on an Australian sheep farm, over generations – the guilt of those who left; the lost desires of those who stayed behind. “You left a trail of broken bread Across the old battle ground Behind the veil of the living and the dead You wrote your secrets down.” Developed through Red Stitch’s INK program, Lamb is a new Australian play full of lyrical longing and humour. It is a story of the land, and of lies told and secrets kept to protect those we love – and to stop them from leaving us.

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield.
