SKYDIVERS

What a fantastic way to begin the 2023 Riverton Town Days Rodeo! Keep your eye peeled around 7:45 p.m. and look up, way up, to see skydivers from Skydive Ogden descend from over 5,000 feet and circle the skies and then rapidly descend for a picture-perfect touchdown right in the center of the Riverton Rodeo Arena.

BAREBACK

Bareback riding is often considered the most physically demanding event in pro rodeo. The cowboy must stay atop a bucking horse for eight seconds, holding on to nothing but a leather rigging that resembles a suitcase handle. Disqualifications occur when failing to stay on the horse, touching his horse or his equipment with his free hand.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

Tie-Down Roping requires the contestant to be an experienced horseman and a fast sprinter. Once the calf is caught, the cowboy runs to the calf and throws it by hand, then ties any three legs together. The rider’s horse must pull back hard enough to eliminate any slack in the rope, but not hard enough to drag the calf. When finished, he throws his hand in the air.

ITTY BITY COW CHASE

A huge hit at last year’s Riverton Town Days Rodeo! The Itty Bity Cow Chase is similar to the crowd favorite Cash Cow but for children ages 4-5 years old. Let your younger ones climb into the rodeo arena and chase after Riverton’s own “cow” that will be dropping coupons for the kiddos to pick up. Participation is at your own risk.

BREAKAWAY

Breakaway is a variation of calf roping where a calf is roped but not thrown and tied. Once the rope is around the calf’s neck, the cowgirl signals the horse to stop suddenly. The rope is tied to the saddle horn with a string. When the calf hits the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight and the string breaks.

CASH COW

Pre-registration is required. Register at the Rodeo Arena entrance.

A Riverton Town Days Rodeo favorite for both young participants and rodeo spectators. Calves are outfitted with a special drape covered in real cash! There will be two age groups, one for ages 6-8 years old and the other for ages 9-12. Participants are invited into the rodeo arena to chase after the “Cash Cow” and grab as much cash as they can.

SADDLE BRONC

Saddle Bronc riding is often considered pro rodeo’s “classic” event. It is a test of balance, style, and timing. The cowboy’s objective is a fluid ride that synchronizes his spurring action with the bronc’s movements. Disqualification occurs when the rider touches his horse or his equipment with his free hand or if either foot slips out of a stirrup during the eight-second ride.

STEER WRESTLING

The fastest sport in rodeo! The goal is to wrestle a steer to the ground as quickly as possible. The steer often weighs twice as much as the cowboy. Another rider keeps the steer running in a straight line. They are often traveling at speeds of 30 MPH when they meet. A steer is considered “down” when it is flat on its side or back and all feet are pointed in the same direction.

TEAM ROPING

Team roping requires cooperation and close timing. A rider throws his lasso first and must make one of three catches on the steer - around both horns, around one horn and the head or around the neck. After this, he turns the steer to the left and exposes its hind legs. A “heeler” then attempts to rope both hind legs. Five seconds are added for roping only one foot.

BARREL RACING

Barrel racing has no judges, which means a cowgirl’s time is the only determining factor. The cowgirl circles three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern as quickly as she can. A rider may touch, or even tip a barrel, but if one is knocked over, a five-second penalty is added to her total time. Tenths of a second often mark the difference between first and second place.

BULL RIDING

Bull riding is one of the more exciting - and dangerous - rodeo events. A bell attached to the rope excites the bull, causing it to buck harder, and acts as a weight that pulls the rope off the bull once the rider has released his grip. The rider’s goal is to stay atop the bull for eight seconds. A disqualification occurs if the rider touches the bull or his equipment with his free hand.
