Getting Back Into The School Routine. From the shopping, to the early wake up calls, getting the kids ready to head back to school is no easy task. Here are a few tips we compiled from the experts. Shopping On A Budget - Source-www.parenting.com To your kids, shopping for new clothes, gear, and school supplies may be the only good thing about going back to school, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune every year. Here are a few great ideas for how to get everything they need and save a few bucks doing it. Hold off buying trendier gear like lunch boxes and pencil cases . Kids may love a version they find in July, but once they start school and see that their friends are all using another kind, they’ll beg you to upgrade them -- and that only results in wasted cash. Shop end-of-summer sales. You know as well as we do that kids wear short sleeve polo shirts all year long, so hit the big summer sales and grab up discounted duds that can be worn well into fall. Stick to The List. The teacher’s supply list at the start of a new school year is daunting enough so don’t waste time and money on unlisted items. Extra supplies, while they may be cute, will probably never get used and just leave your pockets empty. Head to the supermarket for basic supplies. Check weekly circulars for great deals on pens and loose-leaf paper, and get your weekly grocery shopping done at the same time. Bonus: buying everything in one place will save time and gas money! Combating Chaos on the First Day Source www.kidshealth.org How can you combat firstday chaos? If you’re headed to a new school, try to arrange a visit before classes begin. Explore any areas that are of particular interest, such as the gymnasium, library, or science labs. Some schools offer maps. Get one and give it a read before school starts — then keep it in your backpack until you’re familiar with your new surroundings. Your first day is also the time to bring in school supplies and paperwork. It can help to pack your backpack the night before school starts so you’re not scrambling around at the last minute looking for what you need. In addition to packing basic supplies (such as notebooks, pens, pencils, and a calculator), hunt down any of the school forms that were mailed to
your family over the summer: immunization (shot) records, permission slips, and class schedules. Homework Help - Source- www.familyeducation.com • Have your child use an assignment notebook so he knows what homework is required each day. • Introduce a planning calendar and show her how to use it when she begins to have long-term assignments. • Each day preview the assignments that he has to do and get the tough tasks out of the way first. He should write down the order in which he will do assignments. • Teach your child to review her work frequently. • Get an organizer, and demonstrate how to use it so there is a system for organizing all school papers. • Use a book bag to transport books and papers. • Encourage your child to establish a regular time for doing homework. • Keep old quizzes and tests to prepare for future tests. • Eliminate distractions such as phone calls and television during homework time. • Establish a regular place for doing homework. From all of us at QC Family Focus, we hope your children have a productive and happy school year!

A Handwritten Bible for the New Millennium Steve Hart Davenport Library t the dawn of the twenty-first century, Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota commissioned a work of art that illuminates the Word of God for a new millennium and designed to ignite the spiritual imagination of believers throughout the world. The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten, monumental, illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in the modern era. It was created by scribes in a Scriptorium in Wales under the artistic direction of Donald Jackson, one of the world’s foremost calligraphers and the Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords. The Bible was completed in 2011, and its permanent home is the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The Saint John’s Bible incorporates many of the characteristics of its medieval predecessors: it was written on vellum, using quills, natural handmade inks, hand ground pigments and gild such as gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum. And yet, it employs a modern English translation (NRSV) as well as contemporary scripts and illumination. Back to School! I Maggie Gehlsen Miss Muscatine’s Outstanding Teen 2012
t’s that time of year again-you’re stocking up on school supplies, getting yourself and your family back into a regular sleeping pattern, and scrambling to find just a little extra time to yourself. Amidst the craziness of school beginning again, families can sometimes forget to spend a little extra time together, resulting in some unhealthy eating habits forming, and loss of exercise. As a family, there are still plenty of ways to get out and be healthy together even though school is almost back in session. In the fall, there are plenty of road races you can do together! Run With Carl takes place on Labor Day in Bettendorf. The Clinton 5K, 10K, & half marathon all take place on September 9th, with a beautiful course! Along with these, many health and fitness clubs will continue their back to school specials! This time of year is also the perfect time to try out new classes and programs being offered at health and fitness clubs. No matter what you decide, make sure it is a healthy choice! Studies show that people who get out and exercise are automatically in better moods, and feel better about themselves, while having positive relationships with their families and friends. Get out, get healthy, and get happy while doing so! Happy back to school! :)

Kathy Salisbury, Program Manager, Iowa Dental Foundation
As parents, each day brings challenges to balance the needs of themselves and their children and their financial resources. When it comes to oral health care, sometimes difficult decisions must be made. Many people face barriers to receiving adequate oral health care. Perhaps dental insurance is not offered by an employer or, even if there is insurance, the deductibles and outof-pocket co-pays are out of reach financially. In today’s economy, making decisions about oral health care is even more challenging. Parents will often forgo their own oral health to make sure their children receive at least a minimum amount of care. Unfortunately, neglecting one’s oral health care can lead to significant medical issues. Research shows are no financial requirements for the event; however, there may be certain medical conditions which linkages between poor oral health and heart and lung prevent a patient from receiving treatment. disease, diabetes, stroke, and pre-term low birth weight. The “Routine” Eye Exam
Many people wonder what is involved in a “routine” eye exam, the type of exam you get once every year or two. Most think that if their vision is OK, they do not need to see their eye doctor. Unfortunately, many ocular diseases in their early stages do not give an obvious warning sign. In fact, two of the most common causes of blindness, diabetes and glaucoma, rarely start off with decreased vision. The two goals of the routine exam are to discover any eye problems that need treatment now and to prevent any potential damage to the eye in the future through early detection. The first step in any eye exam, routine or otherwise, is to talk to you and find out if you have any symptoms of eye disease. We also find out if you have any diseases that could affect the eyes, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Your current medications are written down (some of them can contribute to cataracts, dry eyes, and glaucoma), and as some eye diseases are hereditary, we also ask you if your relatives have any eye problems. The first eye test is to check your vision. You should be able to read the 20/20 or 20/25 line on the chart with your glasses on (if you need any). Anyone with vision less than this needs to be checked for new glasses. Reading vision is also measured as some problems, such as cataracts, can af-

fect distance vision more than reading vision. Side vision is checked for any losses that would suggest a stroke or glaucoma. An Amsler Grid, which looks just like graph paper, tests central vision for any waviness or spots. These could indicate problems such as diabetes or macular degeneration in the retina, the light sensitive layer coating the inside of the eye. Eye movements are checked for any weakness or crossing, and the pupils are looked at with a bright light. If the pupils react unequally to the light, it could suggest problems with the nerves that bring the information from the eyes to the brain. Next, eye pressure is tested as a screening for glaucoma. Finally, the eyes are dilated for the second half of the exam. All this frequently happens before you even see the eye doctor. The first thing that the doctor does is to take a look at your chart and ask you about any problems that you have been having with your eyes. We recheck anything suspicious in your examination up to this point. The next test is the slit lamp exam. The slit lamp is a table mounted microscope that gives us a magnified view of the eye. With it, we can look at the front half of the eye for any problems including infection, inflammation, dryness, or cataracts. The cause of most eye irritation or pain is diagnosed at the slit lamp. s a social studies teacher at Pleasant Valley Junior High School, Jeff Paul, 31, reminds his students that it takes a lot of hard work to start at square one and be successful. But as a professional triathlete, Paul is able to relate how his big dreams kept him motivated to overcome adversity and keep on training. His mantra never wavers: Dream Big. This June, the LeClaire resident achieved his dream of winning the Quad-Cities Triathlon after spending more than a year in physical therapy and training following a potentially career-ending Achilles’ heel injury. “In March 2010, I was putting in some serious 36-hour training weeks. Then, all of a sudden my heel started hurting,” recalls Paul. “I couldn’t ride my bike without severe pain in my Achilles.”

Surgery put his plans on hold and there were worries about his future on the course. But, thanks to the expertise of Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Tuvi Mendel, of Orthopaedic Specialists, Davenport, Paul had cause for hope. Dr. Mendel has a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery and a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine, from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
In addition to specialization in foot and ankle injuries, Dr. Mendel’s practice concentrates on shoulder and knee reconstruction and sports injuries, including joint cartilage repair. Dr. Mendel remembers Paul’s condition. “His Achilles was very inflamed and when it becomes chronic, the body has hard time fighting that inflammation and healing it. In Jeff Paul’s case, the inflammation became so chronic it was both debilitating and damaging.” After conventional treatments were explored, Dr. Mendel performed arthroscopic surgery on Paul’s tendon. It’s a minimally invasive procedure designed to repair the tendon without major surgery. “That surgery prevented him from having an even bigger operation which would have meant a longer recovery time away from the sport he loves,” explains Dr. Mendel. “Jeff’s tendon was in worse shape than we thought and and there was significant damage and partial tear to the tendon, however I was able to clean it up and repair the damage so that his tendon could heal.” Going from grueling schedule to a cast was tough. “Mentally, it was very tough,” says Jeff. “ I wondered if it would hurt for the rest of my life.” Yet within six months, he resumed his training. “When I spend 80 miles running, 460 miles on the bike, and swim 6 days a week, I figure, thanks to Dr. Mendel, my tendon can handle anything!,” he says. “Growing up, my dad taught me the importance of a good work ethic. My parents always made us work for what we wanted and the example he set has really stuck with me,” Paul told the Quad-City Times after winning the local triathlon in June. So what is it about the triathlon experience that Paul wants to share with his friends and students? “I want to inspire people to do in their life what they didn’t think was possible.” Dream big, Jeff.
Fellowship-training. A difference that makes a difference.
Why should patients look for a fellowship-trained orthopaedic specialist?
Because advanced training makes a difference when it comes to surgical specialization. It brings new possiibilities and new procedures into the conversation about your care and recovery. By providing you with access to specialists who actually practice primarily in their fellowship, we’re able to provide a broader, patient-first approach to orthopaedic care that you’ll only find at Orthopaedic Specialists, PC. Learn more about the surgeons and healthcare specialists at OS by visiting us online at osquadcities.com or by calling 563-344-9292 to schedule an appointment today.

At our age, why would we choose inflated health care costs? Get the surgery you need - even on fixed income. At Mississippi Valley Surgery Center, our seniors often pay less out-of-pocket for the same procedure than in a hospital. Why? Because we’re an outpatient facility. We perform minimally-invasive surgical techniques and our patients recover at home. No expensive hospitalization adds up to savings for you. Don’t let expensive insurance premiums, high deductibles or the fear of lost time from work or life keep you from getting the treatment you need. You can save money and receive great care: It’s what healthcare should be.™

Putting our best foot forward in summer just got easier for those who suffer unsightly toenails from fungal infections. While many prefer airconditioned feet clad in sandals and flip-flops during the summer, it’s also the season’s heat and humidity that creates the perfect conditions for this type of infection. “People who often go to public swimming pools, gyms, or even athletes who sweat a great deal, can contract toenail fungal infections,” explains Davenport Orthopedic Surgeon Pam Davis, M.D., Midwest Foot & Ankle Specialists. “If your toes don’t have the opportunity to dry out, you are at higher risk.” It’s becoming a more common occurrence. The National Institutes of Health reports the incidence of these fungal infections is growing, especially among older Americans. Causes of Nail Infection Most fungal nail infections are caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. These fungi live in the dead skin layer around, under and on the nail bed itself. “Nail infections can cause permanent nail deformity, which can interfere with the ability to wear shoes comfortably, play sports or

The fungus absorbs the light energy, which heats its pigment, thus damaging or killing the organisms. The patient may only feel warmth during the process, and no anesthesia is required. The procedure takes about Pam Davis, M.D. a half hour here in the office,” Dr. Midwest Foot & Ankle Specialists, Davenport Davis explains. “The treatment of nail infection is even walk,” says Dr. Davis. Trending Now: Concussions D. Ranier Pavlicek, D.C., Chiropractic Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Department, Palmer Chiropractic Clinics
Concussions can be caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a collision to the body which allows the head to move back and forth. The mechanism of injury could be explained by the anatomy of the skull and brain. The brain sits inside the skull surrounded by fluid, and when the head is suddenly stopped by a blow or collision, the brain inside will slam against the side of the skull and cause a temporary brain injury. We are correct to think football is the number one sport in which concussions occur. What is surprising is that girls’ soccer is the number two sport with concussion as injury. The symptoms of this injury can range from dizziness, headaches, nausea, feeling foggy or sluggish, and concentration problems. Signs that a parent or coach can observe include an athlete who is stunned, confused, forgetful or behaves differently. The state of Iowa provides a fact sheet for all parents and athletes called HEADS UP: Concussion in High School Sports. It can be found at http://www.iahsaa.org/Sports_Medicine_ Wellness/Concussions/HEADS_UP_CONCUSSION_ FACT_SHEET_053012.pdf. This information allows better communication for all involved, from coaches to parents to the athlete. One of the newer trends is baseline testing. This
concept allows the medical team to have a recorded normal test so when the athlete happens to have a concussion they can compare the normal test to the concussed test. This information will help the medical team with return to play guidelines. These tests could be in the form of a computerize test such as impact testing, or a paper test, sport concussion assessment tool 2 (SCAT 2). This test would usually be given during the sports physical that each athlete must have before the season starts. The question most parents have is: When can my child come back to play after a concussion? The best answer for that is: When all the symptoms of the concussion have resolved and after the athlete can perform sport-specific activities without any symptoms.Additional information from the Iowa High School Athletic Association is at http://www. iahsaa.org/Sports_Medicine_Wellness/Concussions/ Concussion_RTP_Protocol_052212.pdf. You’ll find other helpful information at http://www.iahsaa. org/Sports_Medicine_Wellness/Concussions/ concussions.html.

CHOICES IN SENIOR LIVING By Roger Brannan Administrator, Bettendorf Health Care Center
T
he choices for senior housing have changed significantly over the years. Back in the 1990’s seniors had basically two choices; either live at home or move into a nursing home if their health declined. Twenty years later there are now many choices for seniors. Home Health Services allow seniors to stay at home and have a visiting nurse come in and assist them. Another option is to move into an independent/ assisted living apartment. In this environment they rent an apartment, have home cooked meals served to them in a dining room, and a nurse supervises their medication administration and activities of daily living. There are now some independent/assisted living facilities that now accept Medicaid which is a plus for those seniors on limited incomes. Nursing homes are now seeing their population change. Seniors who come to a nursing home for
the most part are in their 90s compared to 80s years ago. Residents who live in nursing homes have increased medical needs that require 24 hour supervision. Naturally, the cost of living in a nursing home is greater compared to independent/ assisted living due to the increased needs of the resident. Today, the average cost of nursing home care in the Quad Cities is $5,500 to $6,500 per month. Medicaid does cover the cost of nursing home care should the resident deplete their assets. Seniors are fortunate that there are so many choices in senior housing today. In the Quad Cities there are many facilities to choose from. At Bettendorf Health Care Center we provide skilled and intermediate nursing care. We offer private rooms, semi-private rooms, and suites. We participate in both Medicare and Medicaid programs. If anyone is looking for long-term care in a homelike atmosphere they can call us at 563332-7463 and ask to speak to Kelsey Snyder for a personal tour.

Your Not To Young To Plan
F
By Curtis Ford Nash Nash Bean & Ford, LLP
ar too often, estate and financial planning is postponed until later in life. People assume they are too young or too poor to need this type of planning. The reality is young families may be in even more need for planning since their lives are frequently in transition or they have younger children who they need to provide for in the unlikely event of an unexpected death. By planning ahead and creating an estate plan, you can protect your loved ones from having to make difficult decisions without the benefit of your input and prevent financial disaster for your family. To create the best plan for your family, it is important that your estate plan and your financial plan create a cohesive strategy. An experienced attorney can help you create a plan to meet all your needs and the needs of your heirs. At the least, your plan should include:
• A will. Not only does a will outline the distribution of your financial or personal assets, it will designate a guardian for any minor children, along with a financial manager for their inheritance. • Living Trust. A trust is a useful tool for avoiding probate. A trust can give you additional control of your assets not only in death, but also in life. • Power of Attorney. A valuable planning tool, a power of attorney designates the person you want to manage your assets if you become disabled and unable to manage them yourself. • Advanced Medical Directive. This document names the person – or persons – that will make medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so for yourself. Regardless of your age, with these documents, you will have started to create a comprehensive plan that will protect you and your family.

and plow the roadway before we could even enter the driveway. And once we made it that far, the sidewalk to the front door was another snowy matter. The casket bearers and I grabbed the snow shovels and cleared a casket-sized path to the doorway. Before long, we had the casket and everyone inside. After organizing the family and casket bearers, we began the procession down the aisle toward the front of the beautiful, historic chapel. I couldn’t believe it – we made it. The funeral was actually underway. And it was then – as I was pushing the casket in procession — that I realized I was still wearing my big heavy snow boots! And I don’t think anyone even noticed. Ever since, I’ve always said that this was the only funeral I’ve ever conducted “with my boots on”! Perhaps this record-setting winter weather recollection will bring some cool thoughts as we head into August – just in time for the dog days of summer. And, we all know that it won’t be long before we’ll all be saying…..”Man, it’s really COLD outside!” Remember Well. David W. T
he recent drought has certainly been fodder for many a conversation about the weather. Our early spring was truly magnificent and, as spring goes, fairly long-lived this year. Then suddenly, the switch flipped to summer and it has been hot, hot, hot. A conversation during a recent visitation naturally turned to the weather and the comment was made that we live in a land of temperature extremes: hot in the summer, cold in the winter. Few would probably argue that point. Our conversation brought to mind another extreme weather experience during our time in the Twin Cities. It was October 31, 1991. Halloween. The leaves tend to turn crunchy in the homeland a little earlier than they do around here, and autumn was in full swing. As kids all over the Twin Cities were surely gearing up for the annual sugar parade (aka “trick or treat”), the weather forecasters warned of an approaching front and the possibility of a brewing storm. Homelanders are hardy, though – no one thought too much of it. I had a visitation that evening. Early in the afternoon the skies turned gray; just before the family arrived at the funeral home, some light snowflakes began to fall. By the time their guests began arriving an hour or so later, it was snowing. On Halloween….? Really? Glancing outside an hour or so later, I saw that the snow was already piling up. It was the earliest I could ever remember getting out the snow shovel. As guests left the visitation, I was constantly clearing snow away from the front door. By the time the family was heading home that evening, we had six or more inches of snow on the ground and I was shoveling a path all the way to their cars. And the snow continued to fall… The family insisted that we hold the funeral the following day – even if no one else could make it. By sunrise, a record 31 inches of snow had fallen and we had ourselves a veritable winter wonderland! Roadways were blocked. Only the main roads were even remotely passable. Every school in the area was closed. Many businesses were closed. And we were about to have a funeral. The service was to be held in the historic Fort Snelling Chapel, not far from the burial site at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. The family and the casket bearers met me at the funeral home and we crawled away in a small four-wheel-drive procession. With the family’s permission, we even exchanged our four-wheel-drive Suburban for the hearse. I brought a couple snow shovels – just in case. We managed to make it to the Chapel without
