Your Mickle’s Worth Welcome to 2012! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. We are enjoying the relative calm after the holiday storm. Our travels are complete and it’s back to the normal chaos in the Mickle house. One of my favorite holiday conversations happened with Matt during “Killey Christmas”. That’s the celebration with Karen’s extended family. With Grandma turning 101, the family decided to move the gathering from Grandma’s house to the Community Center in Karen’s hometown. It’s actually the elementary school that Karen attended as a child. I helped Matt find the boy’s restroom and when we walked in, Matt says, “This is where Mom went to school??” “Yes. Why?” “It looks kind of old.” “Of course, it’s old. Mom went to school here!” Okay, I admit it. Sometimes I act like a 12 year old. I cracked myself up. Once again, Karen did NOT appreciate my humor. Our children are growing up and there’s nothing I can do about it, so I have relunctantly embraced it. Kyle’s social schedule is far busier than mine these days. Kate recently got her first babysitting job, when we were out of town. That made Dad more than a little nervous. She apparently did well. There were no broken bones and the police weren’t called. Then, there’s Matt. ‘Nuff said. I remember the days when I longed for a night alone. It seemed the kids needed us every minute of every day. Now, they are much more independent and I find myself wanting more time with all of us under one roof. I find now it’s the simple things like getting a box of chocolates from one of our friends and taking turns choosing a chocolate wondering what the filling would be (cue the Forrest Gump references), a family card game or playing Text Twist on the computer and seeing which one of us can guess the words first. Those are the moments I enjoy. During the holidays we were watching a television special on adoptions. Martina McBride sang “I have been blessed.” I think it should be my theme song. I don’t deserve the family I have, but I’m sure thankful for them. Okay, next month, I’m sure I’ll be back to 4

A New Year I

Maggie Gehlsen

t’s a new year; we all know what that means... A new YOU! New Year’s resolutions to lose weight are some of the most common, but with that being said, almost half of those resolutions are forgotten about and dropped by February. How do we keep these resolutions? What’s the best strategy for losing the excess winter weight? It’s simple... Find people to join you! It’s no secret that gyms and family health clubs are busy as ever this time of year, but the thing that makes them so appealing is that you aren’t alone! Instead of making a personal resolution (don’t get me wrong... Those are great... if they’re kept!), make one as a family! Devote this new year to making not only yourself healthier, but your family, as well. The Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Wellness Challenge is right around the corner, beginning on January 23. Live Healthy Iowa Kids begins on January 17, making these two programs a great way to get the entire family involved. Not only will you be making yourselves healthier, but you’ll be contributing to the fight against obesity across our state, and across the nation. You can sign up for either of these programs at www.livehealthyiowa.org or Congratulations to our Chick-fil-A winners from our November issue of QCFF: Avery Tait from Davenport, Ryan Carney from Bettendorf, and Michelle Miller from Davenport. These three lucky families won chicken platters with side dishes and dessert for their holiday celebration.

Personal training is one of the most common ways to get in shape and to start living a healthy lifestyle. There are many great personal trainers in the Quad Cities. Don’t let your resolution be forgotten; get out, and get on your way to a new you!

Preparing Your Vehicle for Safe Winter Travel

As Old Man Winter settles into the Quad Cities area, it is important to be prepared for winter weather. Most of us remember to bundle up before going out and we make sure our homes are sealed tight to protect us from the frigid temperatures outside, but many of us forget to prepare our vehicles for winter weather. In the event of a major winter weather event, will your vehicle get your family where you want to go? Are you prepared if your vehicle should break down? Preparing your vehicle for winter is very important. If your vehicle should break down, you do not know how long your family will be stranded in the cold. Being stranded in frigid temperatures can be very dangerous to your family’s health. The first step that you can take to help ensure safe travel for your family this winter is to make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. This can be done by following the manufacturer’s recommendations for routine maintenance. In addition, every fall you should: • Replace the windshield wiper fluid with a wintertime mix. • Replace worn tires. • Check the air pressure in the tires. • Have the radiator system serviced, or check the antifreeze level yourself. • Keep the gas tank near full.

Exposure to extremely cold temperatures can result in medical conditions including frostbite and hypothermia. The second step you can take to help ensure safe travel and to keep your family safe this winter is to carry a winter vehicle safety kit in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include the following: Blankets • Extra scarf, hat, mittens, and socks • First Aid kit • A can and waterproof matches (to melt snow for water) • Windshield scraper • Jumper cables • Road maps • Mobile phone • Compass • Tool kit • Paper towels • Bag of sand or cat litter (to pour on ice or snow for added traction) • Tow rope • Tire chains (in areas with heavy snow) • Collapsible shovel • Container of water and high-calorie canned or dried foods, and a can opener • Flashlight and extra batteries • Canned compressed air with sealant (for emergency tire repair) • Brightly colored cloth Taking these steps to prepare your vehicle for winter weather will help decrease the chances that you and your family will be left in the cold!

Tampa Bay is a Great Family Destination Cathie Rochau, Marketing Representative My family and I recently had the opportunity to travel on Allegiant to the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Specifically, we flew into the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport, airport code: PIE. My job does include my needing to know the basics (and sometimes a little more) about the airlines that fly to and from the QCIA. I had not yet flown Allegiant, so I was glad we were taking them. We are Marriott Rewards members and were able to find rooms at the Marriott at Sand Key, just south of the main section of Clearwater Beach. There are pirate ships, dolphin tours, parasailing, jetskiing, and more to partake in up and down the Gulf Coast. For our main paid sightseeing option, we chose the Clearwater Beach Marine Aquarium where the now-famous “Winter” resides, as seen in the movie “A Dolphin Tale.” I was pleased to see that the entire site is growing. Clearly, the movie has been good for the aquarium, which we were told almost went under a few years ago due to lack of funding. During a live narrative session, we were able to see the trainers affix Winter’s prosthetic tail, and do special exercises that help her work certain muscles in her back. My daughter was able to take a photo with one of Winter’s tails that they have made for her over the years. Needless to say, aside from time on the powder-like sands of Clearwater Beach or Sand Key, this facility is a must-see. An add-on to this is an eco-tour

on a pontoon boat, right out of the on-site docks. They pull nets, crab traps, and stop on a little sandy island for shelling time. In regards to our flight, if you want to have an assigned seat, or board first, then this is something that you should pay for. Open seating occurs last, which is everyone who chose not to prepay, trying to line up, select a seat, and find somewhere to stow their carry-on bag. If you don’t care about where you sit, or who you sit with, save the money and take open seating—but know that you will board last. However, if this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then I highly recommend you pre-pay for your seat ahead of time. As a final reminder, you can take nonstop Allegiant flights from the Quad Cities to Las Vegas, the Tampa Bay area, Phoenix-Mesa, and on February 17, 2012, Allegiant starts 2/week flights to Orlando’s Sanford airport. If you are not an experienced vacation planner, consider calling a travel agent to take advantage of their expertise and knowledge of hotel and vacation packages. Hollie holds one of Winter’s many prosthetic tails that have been used as Winter has grown. Behind her is the story of how Winter became entangled with the line of a crab trap.

WANT TO ESCAPE WINTER? We can help with that. Nonstop flights to 10 cities on 4 airlines. Allegiant now flies to Las Vegas, Orlando-Sanford*, Phoenix-Mesa and St. Petersburg-Clearwater!

We’re mobile-friendly at qcairport.com Call your travel agent or the airline for airfares & packages. *Service starts 2/17. QC Family Focus - january 2012

How To Spend That Christmas Cash

Come and Enjoy our Breakfast!

By Kim Fein RIA Federal Credit Union

Did you get money as a gift during the holiday season? What do you do with it? Do you run right out and spend it or save all of it? You have a lot of choices. Anyone can spend all their money, that’s easy. But then you don’t really have any money in your piggy bank when you need it. The idea is not to spend money but to be money smart and learn how to handle it. Here are a few ideas… Small items…Want to buy a favorite snack at school? Rent a new video game? Go see a movie? If you save enough money you can do those fun things. In fact, the more you save, the more you can do. Bigger items…Do you dream of getting a new bike or skateboard? You’ll need to save even more money which may take you more time. Keep saving! Every amount no matter how small will add up over time. Charity…Do you feel that helping others is important? There are so many places that you can give to… maybe your family has a favorite charity or organization. Make 2012 the year that you learn the art of saving. Axle will be here to give you tips and encouragement along the way. RIA Federal Credit Union wants to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year! Have fun making your list of resolutions for 2012!

Downloadable E-books!

D

By Steve Hart, PR & Marketing Coordinator Davenport Public Library

id you receive an e-reader, tablet, or computer this holiday season or decide to buy one for yourself? Are you considering purchasing one in 2012? Then look no further to hear about one of the fastest-growing trends in America, e-books, and how to download them for free! Let’s start with the basics. What exactly is an e-book (electronic book)? According to the Wall Street Journal, “an electronic book (also e-book, ebook, digital book) is a text- and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices.” If you are thinking about buying an e-reader or tablet, make sure to do your research! There are many different types and brands on the market, and some can do much more than display e-books. So before you spend the money, know what you want. The Davenport library has resources to help! Once you have your e-book reading device, decide where to go to download books. Like the variety of reading devices, e-books can be downloaded from a multitude of outlets. The popularity of e-readers and other portable electronic reading devices has caused the popularity of e-books to soar, making them readily available almost anywhere online. According to a news story done by WKRGTV news reporter Lauren Styler, “as we reported earlier in June, Amazon.com is now selling more ebooks than paper books.” She also reported

at a later date, “researcher Mark Mahaney predicts that eBooks will surpass printed book sales altogether within three years.” This popularity has also caused the price of e-books to increase. Some e-books now cost almost as much as the same printed copy, making e-books an expensive commodity if you’re not careful. However, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to download e-books. As a matter of fact, you don’t have to spend any money at all. Just like you can check out books at your local library for free, you can also check-out e-books online from your library for free. Libraries across the country, including local Quad-City libraries, offer downloadable e-books for checkout. How do you check out an e-book online? First, know what type of device you have. Second, download and install the free software, which can be accessed through our website at www.davenportlibrary.com, click on downloadable e-books, WILBOR, and then the quick start guide. It will walk you through the step-bystep process which is as easy as 1-2-3! You can also scan the QR code in our ad or from our website, where our reference librarian will walk you through the process. For more information, please contact the Davenport Public Library’s reference department at 563-326-7832. Happy reading!

Just For Kids! The Mickle family is already dreaming of spring break and thanks to Cathie Rochau’s article on Clearwater Beach, several members of the family are trying to convince mom that we need to go see Winter the dolphin in March. It also inspired us to watch the movie Dolphin Tale. As we watched this great family film, it occurred to us, that there need to be more movies that we can feel comfortable watching with the kids. This is definitely one of those movies. Kate says it’s her favorite movie of all time. Matt wanted to head to Florida immediately to help other dolphins. Kyle is perhaps the toughest movie critic in the family and even he thought it was a good movie. Karen and I just enjoyed watching a movie with a positive message that held the kids’ attention and gave us some much needed family time. We compiled the reviews from some of the most popular movie review sites and here’s what the critics say. Common Sense Media says, “Kids will learn about marine animals, especially dolphins, and how they live and move and what they need to survive. The doctor’s explanation of prosthetics is also surprisingly educational,

as is the scene showing the amputee veterans who are playing basketball with their prosthetic limbs in place.” Positive messages: The movie is swimming in positive messages about the importance of family and friends, the bond that exists between human and animals, and the idea that being disabled doesn’t mean that you can’t accomplish your dreams. Positive role models: All of the characters are positive role models: Sawyer is loyal, Hazel is loving, Dr. McCarthy is generous, and Dr. Haskett is dedicated to his work. Everyone works together to save Winter, even when it looks like hope is lost. The kids persevere with their desire to keep Winter alive. The critics from Rotten Tomatoes score movies on a scale from 1-100. They gave Dolphin Tale an 83! The Hollywood Reporter says, “Drenchingly inspirational aquatic tale should play well with general audiences and kids.” On a scale of 1-10, the Mickle family gave Dolphin Tale 9.2 If you have a family movie, you’d like to review, send it to mmickle@qcfamilyfocus.com.

By Mike Mickle Make-A-Wish Gala MC

here are some wonderful kids in our community who need your help. Many of them spend more time in hospitals or doctor’s offices than they do in school. Their families are dedicated to keeping the children healthy, yet they struggle to do so. The children are battling serious illnesses. You have the opportunity to help those wonderful kids and their families forget about their worries, at least for awhile... and share the power of a wish. We hope you will join us for the 12th annual MakeA-Wish Gala on February 4th at the Waterfront

Convention Center in Bettendorf. The silent auction starts at 6pm. At 7:30 we’ll enjoy a delicious meal and you will hear how MakeA-Wish is impacting the lives of local families. You Can Help Students Achieve – And You Get A Little Something Too

Jamie Lange Chief Development Officer WQPT Quad Cities PBS Would you go back to high school? If you asked me a week ago I would have said “no!” Remember the days when kids were mean, you felt awkward and you worried whether or not you’d pass algebra? I know that the reason I passed algebra is because I had great mentors at home and school. I’m fortunate that I graduated because some of my friends didn’t. Every school day, 3 students in the Quad Cities will drop out. We may never know why. As a journalist, my curiosity often gets the better of me and as my mother can attest, I still ask “why” though I’m way beyond my toddler stage. That’s why I’m so excited to work for WQPT public television because we always ask great questions like “why,” “what if,” and “how does that work?” Students today are just as curious as me but they need our help – just as I did. WQPT is part of a nationwide effort by public broadcasters addressing local community interests and activities around high school graduation rates. “American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen” is a public media initiative to address the dropout crisis, raise awareness of the issue, and coordinate action with community partners—all with the goal of helping students stay on course to graduate from high school. Our community is addressing this issue through a partnership called Achieve Quad Cities, which aims to raise the graduate rate by 5% by 2020. One of the ways we can make that statistic a reality is by giving back. As a non-profit, we rely on volunteers to accomplish our mission so I feel it’s important to give back as well. I have had the opportunity to host students on a job shadow and speak to classrooms about the importance of education and graduating from high school. WQPT and I encourage you to become a mentor today. Together we can increase the number of adult mentors by 30. Coordinated by Big Brothers Big Sisters, volunteers mentor at-risk students and encourage them to explore career opportunities and achieve academic and social success. Can you spare six hours a month to help a child succeed? What if every current graduate gave just that to a current student? What an impact it could make in our community! Sign up at achieveqc.org. We’re looking to hear from you! If you are a parent or current student, join us for Achieve Quad Cities Community Conversation to share your perspective on how to keep students in school. Join us Tuesday, January 24th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Western Illinois University Riverfront Campus, 34th Street and River Drive in Moline. Fellowship-training. A difference that makes a difference. Why should patients look for a fellowship-trained orthopaedic specialist? Because advanced training makes a difference when it comes to surgical specialization. It brings new possiibilities and new procedures into the conversation about your care and recovery. By providing you with access to specialists who actually practice primarily in their fellowship, we’re able to provide a broader, patient-first approach to orthopaedic care that you’ll only find at Orthopaedic Specialists, PC. Brighten Your Winter Blues With a Blooming Houseplant! Martha A Smith Horticulture Educator, University of Illinois Extension

J

anuary is here… that time of year when everything takes on a gray hue – your clothes seem dull, your home lacks its usual luster, your cat seems to be a bit ashen…when will spring get here? You need a splash of color to assault your senses – how about a beautiful, bright, colorful blooming plant. Stop by a local greenhouse and see what they have to offer. You will be surprised at the selection and colors available. Cyclamens, chrysanthemums, African violets, gloxinia, primrose and cineraria are just a few of the choices. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Floriculture report potted, flowering plants account for over $100 million in sales every year. Poinsettias rank number 1, followed by chrysanthemums, azaleas, Easter lilies and African violets. This report also showed that of all blooming plants, almost half are sold during holidays, leaving the other 50% sold throughout the year for various occasions and reasons. A flowering plant psychologically helps us through the dull gray winter months. A small blooming plant is not expensive either, usually costing less than $10.00. Here are some tips from the Greenhouse Growers Association for buying blooming potted plants: Avoid plants left wrapped. Sometimes plants are left wrapped in plastic at the stores, which can greatly shorten the life span of the blooming plant. Even paper wraps, if left on too long, can cause damage. Be sure the plants are in good condition. Avoid improperly-cared-for plants that have yellowing leaves. The soil media may not smell fresh, and the leaves and stems can appear droopy. Some people assume that if the plants contain tight buds rather than having open blooms, the plant will last longer. This is not true. For most blooming potted plants, it is essential that at least half the blooms be nearly fully opened, otherwise, when the plants are taken from the greenhouse and placed in lower light, the buds usually won’t open. This is especially true for chrysanthemums. One exception is spring bulbs. Before leaving the store, be sure the plants are wrapped in either plastic or paper. This extra measure protects the plants from low temperatures and drafts, makes handling easier, and prevents the plants from becoming damaged. Don’t leave plants in the car for an

extended period of time. Once you have brought your bundle of color home, place it where it can be seen and enjoyed. Place in a draft-free location. Avoid placing near a heat vent. If there is decorative foil, punch holes in the bottom so you don’t unwillingly let the plant sit in water. Check to see if your plant is dry and if so, water at the soil level, avoiding getting water on the flowers and leaves. Toss excess water that drains into the saucer. Use city or well water, not water-softened, and if possible, let the water stand overnight before using. Misting is not necessary. Remove yellow leaves and faded flowers before they “die”. Pruning on a frequent basis can promote a longer blooming period. For most blooming potted plants, fertilizing is not necessary while the plants are in bloom. © Copyright 2011 by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOUR EYES BE EXAMINED? This is a common question asked by patients. The answer depends on the patient’s age, risk factors for eye disease, and the presence of any ocular symptoms. Individuals presenting with ocular symptoms require immediate eye examinations. Signs and symptoms requiring immediate eye examinations at any age include: loss, distortion, or diminishing of vision; pain in or around the eyes; excessive tearing or discharge from the eyes; swelling of the eyelids or protrusion of the eye; double vision; flashing of lights; halos around lights; floaters; sudden crossing or deviation of the eye; and changes in the color of the iris. Individuals without symptoms, but who are at high risk of having eye disease, should have periodic eye examinations. Risk factors for eye diseases include: diabetes, hypertension, and any family history of glaucoma, cataracts, strabismus (crossed eye), amblyopia, retinal detachments, or other hereditary eye conditions. Infants should receive an ocular screening exam by a pediatrician or family doctor while in the nursery. If the doctor notes any particular problem, very often the infant is then referred to an eye doctor that specializes in pediatric eye care. Every child should receive a preschool screening ocular examination. Amblyopia, the most common ocular problem among preschool children, can be largely corrected if detected early.

John Frederick M.D.

Dr. Frederick, with Eye Surgeons Associates, is board-certified with a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Dr. Frederick practices at our offices in Bettendorf, Iowa and Rock Island and Silvis, Illinois. For more information, please see our website: esaeyecare.com. Many adults believe that because they don’t wear glasses or contacts that they don’t need eye exams, but this has no bearing on contracting age-related eye diseases. The new recommendation is for adults to get a baseline eye screening at age 40—the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur. This is critical because with early detection and treatment, we can minimize the damage from potentially blinding diseases like glaucoma and diabetes that don’t present symptoms until some loss of vision has occurred. Based on the results of the initial screening, an ophthalmologist will prescribe the necessary intervals for follow-up exams. Patients at special risk of ocular diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and those with family histories of eye diseases should have annual eye exams. The above information is to serve as a guideline. Of course, there are always exceptions and if you have specific questions, you should discuss those with your eye doctor.

Save Money on Surgery in 2012:

Exercise Your Patient Power Quad Citians can regain control on rising healthcare costs this year by choosing affordable options like outpatient surgery.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) like the surgery center in Davenport. “We represent the future of healthcare,” explains Patterson. “Thirty years ago, virtually all surgery was performed in hospitals. Patients waited weeks or months for an appointment, and they typically spent several days in the hospital and several weeks out of work in recovery. But better surgical techniques, more efficient operations and treatments allow patients to recover better and faster at home. “We are efficient in our use of healthcare dollars. We focus on quality of care. We are more accessible to patients and present less risk of medical errors and cross infection. And yes, we do all of this while reducing costs to patients, employers, insurers and government programs.”

Mississippi Valley Surgery Center is an ambulatory surgery center located in Davenport, Iowa and has served more than 90,000 patients since opening in 1996. Safe and Swift Recoveries

oney is tight and few can afford to get sick. Unexpected medical costs can put an enormous strain on families as costs and insurance deductibles and premiums increase. “We see Quad City families and patients with deductibles as high as $10,000. That means they are paying a substantial amount for their own treatment right out of their pocket,” says Michael Patterson, President and CEO of the Mississippi Valley Surgery Center located in Davenport. “Combine higher insurance deductibles with increased food, fuel and housing prices, and no one can afford to just call the doctor for procedures or surgeries without asking tough questions about cost or exploring more affordable treatment options.” So, what’s a family to do? “What people may not know is that right here in the Quad Cities, there are ways to be treated that are actually more affordable, safe and put you on the road to recovery faster,” he explains. The Davenport-based Mississippi Valley Surgery Center (MVSC) and its network of physician specialists continue to grow. “MVSC is home

to ambulatory (outpatient) surgeries, where a patient who needs less than 24 hours for treatment can have their surgery performed,” he continued. “MVSC is built to better serve patients who did not necessarily need the services and associated costs of hospitalization and where physicians had more control over how procedures are handled.” Since its beginning in 1996, the Mississippi Valley Surgery Center has served more than 90,000 patients; and the ambulatory surgery center has grown, supported by the Mississippi Valley Health Network of specialists, to perform over 10,000 procedures a year. “The MVSC and Mississippi Valley Health Network of practices keeps health care costs down because our training emphasizes minimally invasive procedures that promote faster healing; and the surgery center’s outpatient services ensure you recover at home and avoid expensive hospital stays.” “We are the Future of Healthcare” In recent years as surgical techniques have improved, more procedures are being performed nationwide in

While cost weighs heavily on pocketbooks, there is also the worry about being treated outside a hospital setting. Although many believe that extended observation and a hospital stay ensures there are no complications, research is bearing out that the best place for recovery may be at home, away from unnecessary exposure to infections. The MVSC also voluntarily holds itself to the gold standard of care and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Also because it serves Medicare beneficiaries, the Medicare program certifies MVSC. The Mississippi Valley Surgery Center complies with standards developed by the federal government to ensure the safety of the patient and the quality of the facility, physicians, staff, and services.

Our front cover picture this month features 3rd graders at Hopewell Elementary in the Pleasant Valley School District. The students are in Mrs. Vice’s class. She has been talking to the kids about “making their mark” on our community. The children wanted to do something to help others and, after some brainstorming, they chose to make blankets (with the help of mom and dad) for Safe Families for Children. It is a network of local agencies and churches that are committed to preventing child abuse and helping at-risk families successfully manage crisis situations. Safe families for Children provides a loving sanctuary where parents can safely and voluntarily place their children in times of need. The organization was founded in 2002 by LYDIA Home Association. Safe Families for Children has partnered with the local churchs to grow to a network of over 1000 volunteer families serving as many as 1000 children and families last year alone. Safe Families now has a presence in more than 13 states and partners with host agencies, local churches, ministries, as well as community and government agencies

A hole in your children’s financial safety net

By Curtis Ford Nash Nash Bean & Ford, LLP

With carefully crafted estate planning documents, parents know their wishes for their children’s care will be carried out by trusted friends or family members in a loving setting they select. If you are not sure what is included in an estate plan, a qualified estate planning attorney will work with you to create a plan that reflects your family’s needs and your wishes. At the least, the plan should include: • A will that specifically names guardians for your children as well as outlining the distribution of your assets. • Powers of Attorney allowing a trusted person to make healthcare and property decisions for you in the event of disability or incapacitation. • HIPAA documents naming who is allowed to receive your medical information in case of disability or incapacitation. Like many other financial arrangements, an estate plan is not a static document. As your family ages, you may re-visit the plan and update your documents, ensuring they continue to meet your family’s needs.

ou set up your retirement accounts; you bought additional life insurance; you even started a college savings account when your children were born. You know you’re financially set to be a parent. Maybe not. Unless you added estate planning to your list of financial responsibilities, you left a large hole in the safety net you knitted for your children. Proper estate planning documents are as important to the long-term future of your family as your car loan or home mortgage are to your current needs. Too often, parents of young children think they are too young, too healthy or too poor to worry about estate planning. Fight Those Winter Blues

I

By Roger Brannan Administrator

t’s a New Year and a time when many of us make New Year’s resolutions to do something we haven’t been able to do in the past. It’s an election year and for me I get so tired of all the political commercials with the politicians making promises most cannot keep if they are elected. But enough of that. January in the Midwest marks a time of the deep freeze with snow, ice, winter winds and bitter cold weather. Thus, many of us like bears hibernate indoors for the winter. As a result many people suffer from the winter blues or mild to severe depression. We can take a proactive approach to avoid this by staying active. Daily exercise either at home or at a health club is very helpful to the mind, body, and spirit. You allow yourself to be around others, socialize, and get your body in shape. It is a proven fact that by exercising it releases chemicals in the brain to help

32

combat depression. Another approach is to keep in touch with friends not only by phone but to invite them over for coffee or visit them. Interacting with close friends helps you share and discuss issues or problems that you may be facing. The thoughtful advices of others or listening to what your friends are facing truly helps make your own problems feel insignificant and makes you feel better by helping others. The local and national news describes many people across the U.S. who are facing very difficult economic times with unemployment, foreclosure on their homes, uninsured illnesses, and personal tragedies.Although these stories are difficult to hear, they make many of us so thankful for what we have ourselves. Our 2012 New Year’s resolution should be one in which we all step up to the plate and help others that are less fortunate and need help. It will warm your heart, give purpose to your life and “pay it forward” to those that are struggling to survive.

Have you made your resolutions for the New Year?

By David W. Deuth, President of Weerts Funeral Home

M

ost people, it seems, resolve to do something new or different or better as the calendar flips over to January. And it’s a pretty wellestablished fact that most resolutions, for one reason or another, aren’t kept throughout the year. Perhaps, for many of us, we don’t need as many “resolutions” as we need “to-do lists”. I admit it: I’m a list guy. More than once, I’ve added something to my to-do list – and immediately crossed it off – realizing that I had already completed it, but forgot to put it on my list in the first place. Lists, for some of us, can be helpful. Even inspiring. Don’t make a New Year’s resolution to review your Will. Put it on your to-do list. An outdated Will may not do everything you had intended it to do. And if you don’t have a Will – establishing one with the help of a good lawyer belongs at the TOP of your to-do list. Don’t make a New Year’s resolution to establish or review Power of Attorney, Living Will and Advance Directives documents. Put it on your to-do list. These important documents allow you to assign who can make decisions on your behalf in the event you are temporarily or permanently unable to do so for yourself, including life-support decisions. Talk to your lawyer. Don’t make a New Year’s resolution to review the particulars of your life insurance. Put it on your to-do list. If your family landscape has changed due to birth, death, marriage or divorce, your beneficiary designations may no longer reflect your intentions for your life insurance proceeds. Talk to your life insurance agent. Don’t make a New Year’s resolution to establish or review your pre-arrangement. Put it on your to-do list. Pre-arranging allows you to tell your family what’s important to you regarding your funeral arrangements – and spares the people you care the most about from having to make so many difficult decisions at such a difficult time. Talk to your funeral home.

Everyone seems to understand that each of these elements is important to consider. Yet, comparatively few people actually attend to these items while they still can. From my vantage point as a funeral director, perhaps the most important aspect of each and every one of these to-do list items is this: once your family is finalizing funeral details, it’s simply too late to review, update or change anything. Your overall plan “is what it is” at that point; good intentions simply don’t apply anymore. If you can make a New Year’s resolution stick, then be resolved to review and update your plan as needed. If you’re not so sure about the success of a resolution….grab a pen and a piece of paper and make a good old-fashioned to-do list. It’s a good time to get to work on your plan. Remember Well.
