Your Mickle’s Worth Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms out there. Not only will we be celebrating Mother’s Day this month, but my mom will celebrate another milestone. It’s hard to believe she turns 80 this month. My mom is a quiet, unassuming woman who will no doubt be upset that I even brought attention to her by mentioning her birthday in the magazine. Still, I couldn’t let her birthday pass without honoring her. Mom has devoted most of her adult life to raising her children and now lavishing her grandchildren with love. She is also quick to defend those grandchildren when she feels their parents are being too hard on them. As I was growing up mom was known for always offering a hot meal or a hug... whichever she thought you needed the most. The hugs are still plentiful at mom’s house and she will attempt the hot meal. She makes the best cherry creme pie on the planet, makes cheeseburgers that could put most restaurants to shame and has a recipe that somehow makes me crave dumplings. I’m blessed to have a mom who taught me what it means to have unconditional love. So this month, we’ll be celebrating the big 8-0 with mom along with Mother’s Day. Of course, our kids will be celebrating with my lovely wife as well. I feel incredibly fortunate to have two such wonderful women

in my life. One who did her best to raise a responsible son and the other one who is trying to correct all the mistakes the first one made! It’s obvious they both had their work cut out for them. At any rate, I’m searching for ways to honor the wonderful women in my life, Mom, Karen, Karen’s mom and Grandma are all special ladies. Make sure you do something special for the “mom” in your life. Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Mom! I love you. Mike

Summer Fever!

Maggie Gehlsen Miss Scott County’s Outstanding Teen

t’s getting to be that time of year again... no one wants to be kept inside, the weather is beautiful, and kids are anxious as ever to be released from school. With summer right around the corner, it gets a lot of us thinking about how we’re going to spend it. With the resources we already have in the Quad Cities to stay healthy, there’s even MORE to do in the summertime! The 27th Annual Ride the River Bicycle Ride on Father’s Day is a great way for families to team up and view the beautiful Mississippi River. RAGBRAI, the annual Bix 7, Quick Bix, and Jr. Bix road races, and many day camps for children are available, as well! The Quad City area has many bike paths, parks, golf courses, and recreational areas, in which people can exercise with their families. Scott County has 80% of adults staying active during their leisure time, second only to Johnson County in the entire state of Iowa. In our county, quality of living is a huge priority, making us one of the healthiest counties in Iowa, and also one of the luckiest! Our local YMCAs and fitness clubs offer numerous classes, such as Zumba, Yoga, Body Pump, and Pilates, just to name a few. It keeps many members coming back more and more to the gyms. Fitness classes are even available for children, along with fitness clubs being started in local schools. Lunch programs are being updated and are now healthier. I think it’s safe to say that in Summer 2011, families of Scott County won’t have any trouble staying healthy or busy. Stick together, keep one another motivated, and get moving! Happy Summer!

ave you every heard the expression, “Penny Wise, Pound Foolish”? It is referring to someone that is so frugal that they won’t spend a little bit of money in order to save themselves more money in the long run; or perhaps they feel like they can’t squeeze any more into their budget so they forgo important expenditures. Some examples of this would include… Routine maintenance. Spending a small amount to maintain the things you already have will pay off when you don’t have to spend a lot of money to replace those things completely. For example, if you don’t get your oil changed regularly your engine will go bad sooner. Replacing your engine all together can run into quite a bit of money as well as buying a different car if you don’t fix the one you have. One way to justify the expense right now is to remember that proper maintenance really pays for itself. Keeping your oil changed and your tires properly inflated will get you better gas mileage. Avoiding the doctor/dentist. My husband had not gone to the dentist in years when his teeth starting hurting him. He had to have a tooth pulled via emergency extraction and now undergoes deep gum cleanings every 3-4 months. Even though we have insurance, we have to pay a portion of those “deep” cleanings, but his regular 6 month checkups are covered at 100%. He could have gone every 6 months and it wouldn’t have cost a dime, but because he didn’t go, it has cost much more than a dime. Not taking advantage of a flex account. This is one I run into quite a bit with my clients. They will say that they don’t take advantage of their flex accounts because they need the money in their pocket to pay bills. If you are going to pay $100/month in doctor/dentist bills, why not take advantage of the tax savings by putting into the flex account. You are actually costing yourself more by paying taxes on that money to receive it in your paycheck. Ignoring insurance or picking it by the premium. If you don’t have insurance or don’t feel like you can afford insurance imagine what you would do if you ended up in a car accident, had a medical emergency or your house/apartment burnt down. Similarly, if you have insurance but just pick the one with the cheapest premium, you may end up paying much more over time if you have regular prescriptions or doctor visits that cost you more as a result of the cheaper insurance. Saving 15% by using your credit card today, but paying 20%+ in interest and carrying a balance. Have you ever gone to the store and they say if you use your store card today, we’ll give you 15% off. This may sound like a good deal, and it is as long as you pay the card off before any interest accrues. If you pay the balance off over the course of a few months, the interest that accrues eats into your savings and could possibly end up costing you more than you saved. Believe me I know how hard it is to think of paying for these things. I too find myself trying to put off some of this stuff in order to save a little money, but I end up talking myself through the bigger picture and know that I cannot put these off, otherwise I’ll be trying to budget for more later on. For me, I try to give up one family meal out to pay for an oil change. Try to think if there’s anything you can give up for a month in order to protect yourself from having to give it up for years. sing your DHCU CheckCard is one of the easiest ways to spend money these days. So much so, that next to cash, debit cards are the most popular way for people to make purchases. Using a debit card is so quick and easy that you may not realize there’s actually a whole set of interchange transactions that take place for each swipe of your card. These behind-the-scenes transactions guarantee your payment to the retailer, prevent fraud and store data. All of these transactions come with a cost. Every time you pay with your DHCU CheckCard, or any debit card, the retailer has to pay a fee to access the global electronic payments network. The portion of that fee they pay to DHCU is called the "Interchange." This revenue is necessary for DHCU to run our debit and credit card programs. Unfortunately, retailers don’t want to pay their fair share of these transactions. They’ve been lobbying Congress to shift their interchange costs over to the consumer. The proposed legislation may make this cost shift a reality, making it hard for DHCU to do what we do best - offer free checking, low fees, affordable loans and convenient debit cards. Some big banks have already increased their fees and are getting rid of free checking. As credit unions, we want to continue to put our members first and offer an affordable alternative. To contact your legislator to reverse the interchange rule, visit www.savemyfreechecking. com.

Keep your landline and still save a few bucks

W

By Lori Hillebrand, Northpark Mall Verizon Wireless Store Manager

hat if there was a modern way to keep the benefits of your traditional landline, its phone number and save money at the same time? People talk about doing it, but many fear actually pulling the plug on their landline phone service. Some families or individuals may have had the same phone number for decades and simply don’t want to lose it. Others may feel it’s their connection to the world in the event their wireless phone battery dies. It may be a way to get multiple voices on the same line – a huge benefit for those cross-country family calls when we gather at the holidays. Believe it or not, 25 percent of Americans have given up their landline for exclusive use of a wireless device, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Many look at the leap as a way to save a few bucks each month. A new service from Verizon Wireless, Home Phone Connect, may be the money-saving answer that 75 percent of people hanging on to their landline are looking for. This innovative and simple new service allows

customers, both new and existing, to port their landline phone number to Verizon Wireless for as little as $9.99 per month (plus other charges). It’s a surprisingly easy transition. A small device can connect up to three cordless phones to a wireless base equipped with your traditional home phone number and offers your favorite phone features such as caller ID, call waiting and voicemail. Current customers can add the line to their existing wireless plan and deduct from the plan minutes, or purchase stand-alone service with unlimited calling in the U.S. for $19.99 per month (plus other charges). The device itself is free with a two-year contract. Home Phone Connect is an efficient way to save money on your traditional landline service, consolidate bills and maintain all the benefits that you’re accustomed to. If you have questions about this or other services offered by Verizon Wireless, stop by one of our stores in the Northpark Mall, Southpark Mall, Park Avenue in Muscatine or Elmore Avenue in Davenport and we’ll help get you started.

pring is here! It’s the perfect season for a fresh new start, and what better time than now to work on that New Year’s Resolution to save money. But instead of making a general statement about saving money, get specific. Set goals for your funds – a special dvd, a cool video game, that bike that will take you on fun adventures or maybe spending money for a family vacation. Make your goals real by cutting pictures out of a magazine or catalog (after you ask your parents of course). Put the pictures on the fridge or a bulletin board where you will see them constantly and be able to remind yourself why you are saving. As you save, keep track of how much closer you are to reaching your goal. An easy way to do that is with your savings book that you get when you open an account. Remember to always pay yourself first with any money that you get from gifts or allowance and you will be able to reach your goals!

How To Pick the Best Pet For Your Family

Y

ou and your family are finally ready for the ultimate commitment- a pet. If you’re at all like the typical family debating a pet- this is how the family pet statistics measure up: You want a cat, your daughter wants a bunny, your son wants a lizard, and your husband wants a big dog and this usually changes on a daily basis. So how do you pick the right pet and make it a family decision? Here are just some of the factors to consider: Clean-up- who will be doing most of it (realistically)? How much are you/they willing to participate in? Travel- does your family travel often and have a reliable pet sitter or means of toting around your newest family member? Family Personality- Are you an active bunch or a mellowed crew? Some people are active enough for a large dog and others would do much better watching a movie with their lap cat. Preferences- Is there a family member in particular that absolutely has always hated cats or are allergic to a specific animal? Children’s Age Groups- This is such an important factor for your child’s safety and the animal’s as well. A dog (family friendly breed) or turtle are great for the youngest members of the family. Do you want to teach your kid how to take care of an animal or is the pet more for their enjoyment only? Time- Out of consideration for the pet, don’t invest in a dog if you don’t have time for the proper care and upkeep they require. Pets need love too and serve other purposes besides the family’s entertainment. When picking a pet, it’s most important to consider the realities of the care you can provideto be fair to the animal and for safety purposes as well. You can involve your family and construct a pros and cons list. Not everyone in the family may be happy with the choice initially, but it is hard not to love an animal once they are in your house and most family members will warm up to them. If you think picking a pet is hard, just wait until everyone tries to agree on a name for it. Good Luck!

ill Kohn, son of Chris and Meghan Kohn, of Bettendorf, was born November 12, 2010 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS.) HLHS is a severe heart defect affecting 4 in 10,000 births, resulting in infants being born with an underdeveloped and non-functioning left ventricle. Will underwent his first open-heart surgery (the Norwood) at six days old at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. A second openheart surgery (the Glenn) will be performed between four to six months of age and a third (the Fontan) at around two to three years of age. These surgeries will never fix the heart that Will was born with, but will allow him to live and thrive for many years. Will, at some point, will likely need a heart transplant – as his rebuilt heart (half a heart doing the work for a whole heart) may eventually tire. Will came home about two and a half weeks after the Norwood and was able to spend Christmas at home. He is a very happy, content baby that brings his parents - and even those that have never met him - much joy. Twenty-five years ago, this defect would have been con-

Planning For Disaster

O

By Curtis Ford Nash Nash Bean & Ford, LLP

ver the last few months, the news has been filled with devastating natural disasters, most notably the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. While we will never be hit by a tsunami, our area faces other natural disasters and it is always best to be prepared. In case of a natural disaster, Red Cross and FEMA both recommend families maintain the following items as an emergency kit in an easy-to-carry bag: • Seven day supply of medications along with lists of all medications and medical information • Copies of personal documents including passport/birth certificate • Policy numbers and contact information for mortgage lenders, standard bills and insurance companies • Cell phone with chargers • Family and emergency contacts phone and address information • Extra cash • Extra set of car and house keys To best prepare for the worst outcome of any disasjune dates 2011 family 1 4/4/11 ter, it also is important thatfocus your7.375x4.75:Layout estate plan is prepared and ready to execute. Losing a loved one during a disaster is

difficult but an up-to-date and well-written estate plan can make a difficult time easier. Some tips: Plan – While no one wants to think about their death, it is most comforting to your family if there is a clear plan during a difficult time. A living trust prepared by a qualified estate planning attorney not only provides for your heirs, but gives direction to the distribution of your assets and can speed the settling of your estate by avoiding a time-consuming and costly probate process Share – Your estate plan documents provide a road-map to your wishes. A living trust can protect your assets from your heirs’ creditors or divorce, but don’t create an even bigger disaster by springing a surprise on your family after your death. Revisit – Once your plan is in place, it is equally important to keep it up to date with your current wishes and assets. Plan to review your plan every three years or whenever a major milestone occurs, such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a child or major property purchase. It is impossible to know what we may encounter next in our life, but with a good set of plans – both emergency and estate – you can be best prepared for whatever strikes next. SUMMERTIME EYE INJURIES

N

ow that the weather is improving, and as the long warm days of summer approach, it’s natural that we engage in more outdoor activities. Children will be running from the ball diamond, to the playground, to the swimming pool, as fast as they can. During this fun-filled season, it’s easy to forget the possibility of injury. Eye injuries in particular are more common in the summertime. Here’s a few of the potential problems to be aware of. Approximately 40,000 sports-related eye injuries occur every year, but 90 percent of these injuries could be avoided with the right protective eyewear. Baseball/ softball injuries are quite common and may cause serious harm to the eye. Helmets are worn to prevent head injury, but often won’t protect the eyes. After a direct impact, from a thrown or batted ball, the orbital bones (or eye socket) may fracture. Anyone with a blow to the eye or surrounding area should be evaluated urgently. Other possible complications include hyphema (blood inside the eye), retinal detachment, bruising of the retina or optic nerve, or even rupture of the eye. Symptoms that should prompt immediate attention include loss of vision, pain in or around the eye, double vision, persistent flashes of light, floaters or shadows in the vision, or numbness in the cheek or teeth on the injured side. With any type of eye injury it may be difficult to assess the amount of damage from an external examination. Your eye doctor has special examination techniques and equipment to assess the extent of the injury. A common injury in the summertime is a scratch on the surface of the eye (or corneal abrasion). This will often involve a foreign body, such as a tiny stone, grain of sand or other object. Stones and other small foreign bodies can be deflected into the eye at high velocity from the blades of lawn mowers or the lines of lawn trimmers. Children should not be allowed nearby while a lawn mower or lawn trimmer is being operated. Wearing safety glasses can prevent a large majority of these injuries. Polycarbonate is a type of plastic that is extremely strong, lightweight, and shatterproof. Ideally, safety goggles with polycarbonate lenses and side shields should be worn whenever there is a risk of particles flying or for appropriate sports. Demonstrate the use of protective eyewear to children by always wearing safety glasses/goggles yourself while using power tools, lawn trimmers or hammering metal. If you do get a foreign body in your eye, often they will not cause immediate pain, but start to ache later that night or the next day. Material embedded in the eye is usually too small to see by the naked eye. If the symptoms do not resolve after

irrigating the eye thoroughly with water (or saline) see your physician right away. Fireworks are another potential cause of severe eye injury. They cause damage by both direct injury from the force of the explosion and from exposure to a foreign body - the gunpowder, paper, plastic and wood materials used in their manufacture. Eye injuries from animal bites or scratches are also more common this time of year. Children are at higher risk due to their stature. Often the animal will be right at a toddler or preschoolers eye level. Kids will also approach new animals without the caution that adults have learned. These types of injuries may be anywhere from minor to severe and can be complicated by infection. Close observation of young children and a proper degree of caution around animals can prevent many of these encounters. While not an injury, we also need to recall potential damage to the eyes from the sun. We are well versed in the use of sunscreens, but don’t always remember to have our kids wear UV blocking sunglasses. This simple precaution may decrease the risk of cancers in and around the eye, cataracts and macular degeneration down the road. Eye protection, education and early treatment are the keys to prevention and minimizing the damage of eye injuries. The start of summer is a good time to revisit these issues with your children and family so everyone can enjoy the season a little safer!

Tracy Thumann, Davenport, total ankle replacement Springtime is a busy season in the wedding business - and no one is happier on her feet assisting brides than Davenport wedding planner Tracy Thumann, owner of Bridal Headquarters. That’s because for nearly 20 years after an auto accident, Tracy struggled with multiple ankle surgeries, two ankle fusions and considered quitting her career and amputating her leg to be rid of the pain. Then she met Dr. Tuvi Mendel of Orthopaedic Specialists, PC, and agreed to have the fellowshiptrained surgeon perform a successful reconstruction and a total ankle replacement. “I can move again! Dr. Mendel is amazing,” says Tracy. Now undergoing aggressive physical therapy, she hopes to spend even more time on her feet making sure those brides get to the church on time.

Total Joint Replacement

Getting Better Faster:

Tracy’s Ankle Replacement Helps Keep Her One Step Ahead of Her Clients as if wearing a ski-boot,” she says. “This ‘stiff-ankle’ gait caused additional issues for me, including chronic, and sometimes severe, hip and back pain.”

After 20 years of constant pain, Davenport wedding planner Tracy Thumann was contemplating having her leg amputated until she met fellowship-trained surgeon Dr. Tuvi Mendel of Orthopaedic Specialists, PC.

Springtime is a busy one for the wedding business and no one is happier to be on her feet assisting brides than 46-year old Davenport wedding planner Tracy Thumann. “Event planning is a busy job, with many details to juggle and a lot of ground to cover, but I love it,” says Thumann, who owns Bridal Headquarters, Davenport. Covering a lot of ground for wedding clients has gotten much easier for Tracy after multiple surgeries, two ankle fusions and severe pain almost forced Tracy to quit her career and amputate her leg. Today, Tracy says she is grateful to be mobile and back on two feet. Her new-found gratitude has come after recently undergoing ankle reconstructive surgery and a total ankle replacement. After 15 consecutive months, she is no longer in a cast, is walking with relative comfort, and is now able to return to the job she loves. As a young woman, Tracy endured repeated sports injuries, but it was a head-on collision in 1989 that changed her life. She suffered severe head

Tuvi Mendel, M. D. Orthopaedic Specialists, PC, Davenport

injuries and multiple fractures. With over 20 surgeries, Tracy had immersed herself in a two-decade odyssey to regain her active lifestyle. Arthroscopic surgeries were performed, but Tracy’s pain persisted, leading local surgeons to recommend ankle fusion. Tracy turned to Mayo Clinic for a second opinion, where she says, “Doctors told me that my days as an athlete were over, that the damage was extensive, and that a tibial-talar fusion would be necessary. “Fusion meant near-complete immobility of my ankle and walking

Considered Amputation For years, Tracy’s discomfort became increasingly acute. Following another unsuccessful ankle fusion, she considered quitting her job and amputating her leg. “Maintaining a smile throughout these joyful events was getting more difficult,” Tracy recalls. After deciding to have the surgery performed locally, Tracy scheduled an appointment with surgeon Tuvi Mendel, M.D., Orthopaedic Specialists, Davenport. “Tracy basically came to us in tears,” recalls Dr. Mendel, who is fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery. “She was in so much pain that she said she wanted me to cut off her leg.” “My goal was to walk without pain by Christmas, whether it was on my own leg or a prosthetic one,” adds Tracy. Dr. Mendel reviewed her medical history, and he and his team recommended ankle reconstruction and a total ankle replacement before resorting to amputation. “Total ankle replacement is really becoming the gold standard for patients and is beginning to replace ankle fusion,” Dr. Mendel explains. “Total ankle replacements result in better function overall and better motion for the patients, all while not stressing the foot and ankle joints. In Tracy’s case, we were successful.” For the first time in 20 years, Tracy is optimistic about a life without pain and is on her way to an active lifestyle. “I can move again! Dr. Tuvi Mendel is amazing. His talent, along with that of his entire team, saved my leg,” she says. With aggressive physical therapy, Tracy hopes to spend even more time on her feet; to expand her wedding planning business; and to help coach her daughter’s softball team. “I am so grateful,” she says in tears. “I am getting my life back.” QC Family Focus - may 2011

Family Health:

That Back Pain Doesn’t Have to Be a Pain in Your Neck.

It’s estimated that four out of five people in the U.S. will suffer from back pain at least once during their lives, and many aren’t able to find long-lasting relief. “We see patients completely frustrated about treating back and neck pain. They ask: Why can a diagnosis not be established? Why have therapies not worked? Why am I bouncing from office to office? Why can’t I get pain medicine?” says Dr. John Dooley, a Mississippi Valley Pain Clinic physician, based in Davenport. “Here at the Mississippi Valley Pain Clinic, we promise to deal with these issues for each patient in a satisfactory way. We are not all knowing, but we strive to be all-caring.” Just ask 38-year old East Moline mother and home school teacher Cheryl Hanger. “I learned it’s very difficult to home school and parent three children from the couch,” laughs Cheryl. “I would encourage anyone 30

going through this type of pain and suffering as I’ve endured, to know there is help and hope of getting better.” Cheryl suffered from two ruptured and torn disks in her lower spine. She couldn’t walk, sit or stand and endured pain shooting down both her legs. Her husband, Greg, was doing all the shopping and cooking, and her three young children (all under the age of 10) stepped up to do laundry and house work. She made countless doctor visits, underwent MRIs and

CT scans and had several different injections and epidurals – all only providing temporary relief. The Origin of Spinal Pain “Spinal pain comes in many forms – from lower back pain, middle back pain, or upper back pain to low back pain with sciatica,” says Dr. Dooley. “Common pain is caused by nerve and muscular problems, degenerative disc disease, and arthritis. In Cheryl’s case, surgery was not an option for her, so we were able to bring her pain level down to a manageable level. I performed an epidural (an injection into her spine) and used an X-ray, so that I could pinpoint the exact spot causing her pain. “My philosophy at the Pain Clinic is that we thoroughly evaluate all of our patient’s medical history and past treatments, then begin conservatively and try pain relief therapies with the least invasive options,” says Dr. Dooley. “The Pain Clinic offers a full spectrum of services and a multidisciplinary approach for pain suffers — from evaluation to psychological support, proven pain relief therapies and medication management. If surgery is needed, we work with the patient’s doctor for the best possible outcome.” “The injections really helped,” adds Cheryl. “Dr. Dooley’s injection got me over the hump, so I was then able to start physical therapy and tolerate exercise, all of which have been big contributors in making me stronger. It’s really taken a team approach both at home and with my physicians, but eight months later, we just returned from a six-day trip to Disney World with the kids. “I thank God for my family and my doctors, because every day, I’m improving and slowly getting my life back.” Five Ways to Get Back Pain Relief ● Eliminate pain-causing activity and explore alternative exercises. ● Treat the affected area alternately with ice and heat. ● Keep the surrounding muscles stretched and moving. ● Take maximum doses of antiinflammatories (Ibuprofen) ● If you don’t improve in 10 days, call Mississippi Valley Pain Clinic at 563-344-6653

Better Living: Bringing Families Together to Face Aging Issues Jen DeBuhr and Julie McKowen, Senior Star at Elmore Place

Should we sell the house? Take away the car keys? How do we talk to mom and dad about moving? These life questions and more are common among the Baby Boom generation and their parents. According to census data, nearly one in three Quad Citians is at least 50 years old, and as many face their own prospects of retirement, they are also guiding parents through the Greatest Generation’s golden years. “Taking care of your parents can be stressful and confusing,” says Executive Director of Senior Star at Elmore Place, Cathy Hughes. “It’s hard on the children, siblings, and especially parents who want to maintain their independence. We believe it’s time to start a meaningful dialogue with our families, caregivers and professionals in the community about these issues.” To do so, Senior Star at Elmore Place is partnering with WQAD, News 8 on a special series of reports to not only guide local families but also educate them on local resources available for navigating social, legal, financial and senior living issues facing our seniors and their families. Some of the topics that will be included in this series are: managing multiple medications, whether or not a senior should continue to drive, or what options are available for retirement living. Award-winning WQAD will address these and other topics in a special series. These insightful, informative reports will begin with a three-part series premiering Sunday, May 22nd on News 8 at

10, with continuing stories airing Monday, May 23rd on News 8 at 6:00 and on Wednesday, May 25th on News 8 at 6:00. A continuing segment on senior issues will begin airing monthly in June for the remainder of 2011. Know the Steps to Success Among the biggest topics is confusion over when it’s time to address retirement living options with mom or dad. Hughes says the key to transition parents into retirement living lies in planning ahead, reconciling conflict, and putting a parent’s needs first when contemplating a move to an independent, assisted or memory care living community or a traditional nursing home. “Parents want to retain their independence, which sometimes comes into direct conflict with reality: a child worried about his or her parent’s safety or isolation,” explains Hughes. “There’s guilt on both sides. A parent doesn’t want to be a burden, while children feel guilty bringing up the subject of moving parents from a memoryfilled home where many spent childhoods. The result: mom or dad often discourages discussion on the subject, until a crisis such as an accident or illness forces the issue when emotions are running especially high,” she adds. “The fact is there are amazing choices for parents these days that debunk the stereotype of the traditional nursing home. These communities have changed the perspective from dreading a move

to a more social environment with around-the clock care. “When they see how far senior living has come, families tell us they should have made the decision sooner. With their parents thriving and happy, the family is focused on making memories with grandchildren and embracing a new chapter in their lives,” adds Hughes. Follow these steps to promote a successful plan and transition to retirement living: Step 1: Manage Guilt • Share your own feelings. • Help the parent to retain whatever control is possible. • Educate yourself on the parent’s legal, financial and medical matters. • Respect and identify your own needs and concerns. Step 2: Address Family Conflict • Ask: What are the senior’s concerns? • What are the grown children’s needs? • What emotions are involved? • Identify and reconcile the conflicts or disconnects. Step 3: Call a Family Meeting • Stay calm, focused, and respectful. • Remember you are doing this because you care and it is your responsibility. • Tour some retirement living communities with parents and talk to residents and families. • Work toward an agreement to take another step forward.

A child who qualifies for hawk-i coverage will have health care services from one of the two statewide providers: Wellmark and United Healthcare. Dental care is provided by Delta Dental. The All Kids program offers Illinois uninsured children comprehensive healthcare that includes doctors visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care and medical devices like eyeglasses and asthma inhalers. Parents pay monthly premiums for the coverage, but rates for middle-income families are significantly lower than they are on the private market. Presumptive Eligibility is also available for uninsured children in Iowa. It allows children to obtain temporary Medicaid covered services while a formal Medicaid eligibility is being determined by the Department of Human Services (DHS). Community Health Care continues to provide quality medical and dental services and be a resource for the community. For more information about CHC please call 563-336-3000 or visit the website davchc.com.

ommunity Health Care (CHC) has served the Quad City community for over 35 years. CHC has lived up to its’ mission by providing the region with quality primary health care for all people in need. CHC offers a medical and dental home for patients who, for financial, social or cultural reasons cannot access primary health care elsewhere in the community. CHC offers preventive, acute and chronic medical and dental care, as well as ancillary services including laboratory, x-ray, pharmacy, nutrition, health education and translation services. CHC is the only primary care health provider in the area offering discounted services based on income. Without CHC’s services many patients would be forced to rely on emergency departments during crisis, or to go without care altogether. CHC has six clinic locations across the Quad Cities area including four medical/dental clinics, a virology clinic and a homeless outreach clinic. Over the years, CHC has provided the primary care safety net for those in our community who are most vulnerable. A Look In The Mirror Part III

By Diana Spranger RN, Administrator by that negative stimuli. You begin to notice a tighten-

ell, here we are again, another month has flown by and we are now into the beautiful month of May. Those April showers did indeed bring May flowers; along with lots of water to the Mississippi and her bank overflowed. What an awesome thing to watch. Mother Nature has her way of causing us to prepare for disaster and then prep ourselves for the devastation and clean-up after the water recedes. Well, this month we are still continuing with our head-to-toe assessment and we are now looking at our shoulders, chest, and arms. You’ve heard the old statement, “I feel like I’m carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders”. In the day and age that we are living, there’s little positive on the media and a great deal of negative. As we listen to the negative, devastating events happening all around us, it is possible to allow those negative thoughts and happenings to settle into our soul. Our soul is made up of our will, mind, & emotions. The thoughts and communication that we allow to enter our minds and dwell on, unfortunately affect our physical well-being. Our body is made so finite that nothing happens in one area that many areas are not affected. When we dwell on the negative, troubling issues it often causes us to worry and fret about the potential outcome. As we allow those things to affect our daily lives and continue to listen to the negative, we open the door to our thoughts and emotions taking their toll on us physically. When you allow worry to enter into your thoughts and dwell on the negative, it causes your nervous system to be severely affected

ing in your shoulders and often even experience pain and discomfort in your arms and chest area. Chest pain is not to be ignored. Often times when we are under a great deal of stress, we experience the pain of tight muscles in our chest area and across the upper portion of our chest, due to pulled, or inflamed muscle tissue. Unfortunately, the amount of stress & negative thoughts going on may very well cause chest pain, sometimes referred to as Angina. If this persists for any amount of time, you should consult your physician. Now this information is not to frighten you, but hopefully get you to consider what you are filling your mind with. Are you allowing the negative thoughts and happening to control your thoughts or are you “on purpose” making an effort to fill your mind with positive things. The fact is that you are the only person who can control your thought life. Give some consideration to possibly not spending as much time in front of the television listening to the negative but choosing to read a good book, get involved in helping those less fortunate than yourself. Fill your mind and emotions on the positive. You may say, “I don’t find anything too positive to think about.” Get out of your comfort zone. Volunteer to do something for someone who is in worse shape than you are or who is struggling with other issues. My Mother always tells me, “Worry is like a rocking chair, it will keep you busy but it won’t take you anywhere.” Prepare yourself mentally each morning before you start your day to do one thing good/kind for someone else. It will keep your mind busy thinking about what you could do to affect someone else’s life in a positive way. Come spend an hour with the Seniors here at Bettendorf Health Care.

Go Light Your World

By David W. Deuth, President of Weerts Funeral Home

O

n Spreading Light “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Edith Wharton (1862-1937), That we would more often allow ourselves to be one or the other. Candle or mirror. Most often, it seems, neither requires much time nor costs much money. Life presents countless opportunities for each of us to be a candle. Drawing upon our own unique gifts, abilities, circumstances and personalities, many are ably equipped to not only supply light to others around them, but also to provide the fuel required to sustain it. I’ve long believed that any person can make any occupation a ministry to others, if only they choose to do so. With the proper mindset and perspective, one can nearly effortlessly provide light in someone else’s day. Hold the door open for a stranger. Invite someone else to go ahead of you at the checkout line. Start a positive conversation with someone seated next to you on the bus or on the airplane. Simple, kind words and deeds may be just the spark that someone else needs to light their own

candle…which may, in turn, be all that they need to bring light to someone else. No, shining our light seldom requires much money or time. And, of course, we all have days when we just need to absorb the light shining from others in order to energize our own selves. Certainly there’s nothing wrong with that! But even this presents an opportunity, as Ms. Wharton reminds us, to spread the effectiveness of someone else’s light by simply acting as the mirror that reflects the light to others. When people are in a season of loss in their lives, they need plenty of light. Neighbors, friends and coworkers can all be important sources of light and encouragement for someone trying to learn how to live “a new normal” following the death of someone they love. And that light, however simple it may seem to shine, may be all that someone else needs to brighten their day. The little song that many of us learned as kids somehow seems a meaningful reminder at any age: “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…” When someone brightens your day, thank them for it. If you can’t provide your own candlelight today, perhaps you can be the mirror that reflects someone else’s. Either way, you’ll make a positive difference. Go light your world! Remember Well.
