Your Mickle’s Worth Fall is definitely here and apparently it’s time for the Mickles to go shopping. While our children would like to wear shorts through December, their teachers begin to look at them strangely, as do other parents! Matt has very definite opinions about wardrobe. His mother laid out a pair of jeans, a comfy shirt, etc. for him last week. He came bounding down the stairs, took one look at the clothes she had chosen and a look of horror crossed his face. It was the look you’d imagine if someone came across a crime scene. In complete disbelief, he shrieked... “WHAT?!!!!! I am NOT wearing jeans to SCHOOL!” “Why not?” I asked, already knowing the answer. “Because you don’t wear jeans to SCHOOL.” “Where do you wear jeans then?” “To CHURCH,” he said in his best “duh” voice. “I see. Then where do you wear dress pants?” (Pause. Pause. Pause.) “To weddings?......” Apparently, jeans are not good for running at warp speed. He believes he should only wear athletic pants, and even then, he should only have two pairs with matching shirts that he rotates on a daily basis. His older brother is also a big fan of athletic wear, but will dress in decent clothing on occasion. Their sister is also vehemently opposed to wearing jeans of any style or brand. Not sure what we did, but apparently we have raised three children with jean phobia and I’m not sure there is a treatment. We did convince them to wear them for a two hour family photo shoot. The pain was almost too much for them to bear. Judging from their reaction, jean phobia must be equivalent to a root canal without anesthesia. Coats are also over-rated. Even during a blinding blizzard and sub-zero windchills, a sweatshirt is a much better option. Sometimes we don’t even notice what they are wearing until we feel the stares from other parents. I don’t remember ever arguing with my parents over what I was going to wear to school, yet when I mention these battles to my mom, she just smiles. Somehow, I suspect she believes I’m being paid back for my own childhood. NAH.... couldn’t be. It’s seems we literally “fall” into the season and spiral through it. Matt’s birthday is wrapped up, Halloween is behind us and now it’s full speed ahead into Thanksgiving, Kyle’s birthday, Christmas here, Christmas in Illinois, Christmas in Oklahoma and Kate’s birthday. I’ll regain my sanity sometime in mid- January... I hope. Hope your fall is warm and cozy. Thanks for your support of QC Family Focus. We hope you will keep reading, listening to us on 93.9 on Saturdays from nine to noon and watching our reports on WQAD every Friday on their mid-day news. We are thankful for you and for the partnerships we have formed! From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving! Mike

By Kim Fein RIA Federal Credit Union In 1621, the Colonists and Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations. When most of us think of Thanksgiving, thoughts of parades, football and turkey dinners with pumpkin pie comes to mind. Many of us today have Thanksgiving traditions of family, food and fun. So, what are your family’s traditions? While the main idea is to gather with your family and friends to give thanks just before enjoying a splendid meal, many other activities add fun and excitement to the festivities before and after. You may have some activities that your family always does together on Thanksgiving. Here are a few things you can do in between parades and football games. Make a Thankful Wreath…Cut a half circle from the center of a paper plate. Cut out different kinds of leaves from autumn colors of construction paper – orange, brown, green and yellow. Glue the leaves around the rim of the paper plate. In the bottom center of the paper plate, you can write, “I am thankful for…” with a marker or crayon, then draw or write on each leaf something or someone you feel thankful for.
P l a y “ Tu r k e y Words”… Hand everyone a piece of paper and a pen. Set a timer for three minutes so each person can make as many words as possible from the word “turkey”. Whoever has the most words in three minutes when the timer goes off wins the game. Try this with other words associated with Thanksgiving. Play “Turkey Talk”…Tell a “story in the round” by making a circle and starting with the first person who makes up the first line of a Thanksgiving story. An example might be, “Katie didn’t want to go to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving this year”. The next person adds a sentence to give the story another twist. The third person does the same. Go around the circle until the story ends – usually in outbursts of laughter!

Family Holiday Ideas Julie Sisk, WQAD November is the month where things really start to pick up as we wind down the year. From the change in seasons to holidays it can be such an exciting time. Since we started a family I have tried to start traditions, that I hope one day my kids look back on and smile. My parents carried certain traditions through childhood and still do some of them to this day! We always loved to reveal the days leading up to Christmas with an advent calendar, and playtime out in the snow was followed up with hot chocolate and often a kringla (a Norwegian cookie). I have tried to pass on some traditions from my family and searched for new ones as well. Obviously marking special days or events can be simple or extravagant. Here are some of the suggestions I found as I searched for new ideas at abcarticledirectory.com 1. Go for a family nature walk near your home to collect seasonal items that you can use in your holiday decor. If you live near a forest, the obvious choices are pine boughs and pinecones, but long dried grasses can look just as festive tied with a holiday bow. 2. Make a few handmade holiday cards this year as a family. 3. Enjoy a family night with special holiday crafts or games. 4. Take a photo of your children standing in a particular spot each year (in front of the tree, by the front door) anyplace that will be consistent from year to year. Make a special holiday ornament or scrapbook album that depicts the growth and change of your family each year. 5. Research the holiday traditions of your nationality. Adopt a few of these traditions into your annual celebration each year to celebrate your heritage. 6. Ask each child to write a Dear Santa letter. (Small children can draw pictures). Keep a special record of these letters in an album or treasure box. 7. Create an evening tradition of taking a family walk or drive in your neighborhood to view the holiday lights. 8. Cut snowflakes from wrapping paper, festive holiday advertisements, or holiday cards, and string them together into a festive garland. 9. Adopt a special cause each year and spend some time as a family helping those in need, or raising or donating money for a charity of your choice. 10. Bundle up and head outside. Make snow angels or build a snow fort with your kids. When it is time to warm up, build a cozy fire and roast marshmallows in your living room (only if you have a wood burning fireplace ☺). Best wishes to all as we head into the holiday season. Enjoy!

1. What are the most popular destinations? Our Top 10 destinations, based on final destination booked by our passengers: #1 Atlanta, #2 Orlando, #3 Dallas-Ft. Worth, #4 Denver, #5 Phoenix area, #6 Las Vegas, #7 Detroit, #8 Ft. Myers, #9 Los Angeles, #10 Washington, DC. 2. Why is AirTran leaving the Quad Cities? AirTran has said that they are leaving our market as a business decision. A lot of people tell us “they were always full” when they flew on AirTran. But, a full plane does not mean that it was running profitably for the airline but many people don’t realize this fact. AirTran just wasn’t getting those results here and after months and years of them watching those revenues very closely, especially with recent economic factors and the high cost of fuel, they made the difficult decision to leave. With their acquisition by Southwest, they have made similar decisions in other markets across the US based on the same reasons. We are all disappointed that this was the outcome after 14 years of being here. But, with that said, we are also hopeful and confident that 3 major airline brands are here providing global connectivity- American, Delta, and United. Plus, our leisure traffic to the ever-popular Las Vegas, Phoenix-Mesa area, Tampa Bay/St. Pete and the newest announced addition for Orlando-Sanford next year, we are confident we can continue to serve the most popular routes listed above. AirTran spokesman Christopher White says that “AirTran is constantly evaluating routes and stations, and because of the economic circumstances, high fuel prices and the historic performance of these stations, this difficult decision was made.” 3. How do we search for “deals” or good prices on airfares? There are a variety of ways to stay on top of finding good prices. Look early. If you start out way ahead of your potential travel plans, and keep an eye on things, you can get a sense of what the fares are to a certain city. You can also sign up for alerts on the airline website, for the city you are going to and for the dates you are considering, and it will “alert” you via email with any pricing drops or sales that they may be having. But I will tell you, grab them when you get a sense of what that “good fare” is, before they go up! You can also call a travel agent. They can continue to monitor fares for you, get a sense of your travel dates, times, preferred carrier, and so forth. They also can back you up if there are any travel hiccups along the way, and they will be just one call away. I do want to caution people against purchases with third party travel sites. We have had many calls over the years from folks who have purchased from a third party air/hotel travel site. They have had a very difficult time with support from travel website personnel, if anything happens along the way during their travel itinerary. I would always recommend a direct purchase on the airline site, or the airline 800 number or booking through a travel agent, versus a third party website.

Protecting Your Eyes
Many eye injuries and visual health problems can be prevented. The saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” still stands in eye care. Several suggestions include: Use of Safety Glasses or Goggles Wearing safety glasses or goggles can prevent many eye injuries. Many companies require their employees wear safety glasses while at work. This helps prevent pieces of glass, metal, plastic or dirt from flying directly into the eye. Safety glasses are also very useful in preventing eye injuries at home. When cutting wood with a power saw, pounding nails, stapling material into a wall, or even cutting the lawn and weeds with a power weed cutter or lawn mower; safety glasses are recommended. Anytime you’re working in a situation where pieces of debris can fly into your eye with great force, there is a need for safety glasses. Every household should have at least one pair of ANSI-approved protective eyewear to be worn when doing projects and activities at home. ANSI-approved protective eyewear is manufactured to meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) eye protection standard. ANSI-approved protective eye wear can be easily purchased from most hardware stores. (ANSI-approved protective eyewear is not approved for use in sports.) For those who need glasses correction, optical departments also carry safety glasses and can have your prescription put into them to ensure sharp vision while handling power equipment. Sports goggles are highly recommended for many sports. While playing tennis, baseball or racquetball, it is very possible that the ball can strike the eyeball itself and cause great damage. However, it’s not just the ball, players need to worry about, those athletes who play basketball or football, may wish to wear sports goggles to prevent a hand or finger from poking them in the eye. Many optical departments carry a line of sports goggles. Athletes can now choose from various types of sturdy, lightweight, effective and fashionable

And when they have polycarbonate lenses and have been properly fitted by an eye care professional, eyewear does not hinder performance and can prevent 90 percent of sports eye injuries. Flush Chemical Burns Flushing or washing the eye out with water due to a chemical burn is extremely important. Anytime you get chemicals or solutions in your eye, you should wash the eye out with cold water for 15 minutes. The water will dilute and rinse away the chemicals to help prevent tissue damage to the eye. After irrigation of the eye, treatment should be sought by an eye doctor to rule out any infection or residual damage. It is also noteworthy to mention that if you are working with chemicals (at home or work) that could spray into your eye, wear safety glass to prevent chemical burns and injury to the eye. Use of Ultraviolet Coated Sunglasses The latest research indicates wearing a pair of good quality sunglasses with ultraviolet coating helps prevent the suns harmful rays from changing the tissue of the eye. Some of this research has been done in correlation with the development of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Although research is not 100% conclusive, there are strong indications that people may benefit from wearing sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Avid golfers, skiers, gardeners, boaters, and swimmers are among those who would benefit the most.

million, that exemption expires in 2013 and no one knows what Congress will do next. With the fluctuating estate tax exemption, you are most secure having a comprehensive estate plan to cover the possibilities. My property is in joint tenancy; I don’t have to worry about my estate. Joint tenancy sounds like a simple solution but it can leave you with many complex problems. For example, if your home is held in joint tenancy with your spouse, it will automatically pass to the surviving spouse when the first spouse dies. However, without the ability to split the estate between the two spouses, estate taxes may be higher when the surviving spouse dies. Estate planning can be overwhelming if you look at the sheer volume of information available to you. However, with a qualified estate planning attorney, you can sift through the mounds of information, work through the myths of the day, and create a plan that works for you and your family.

Heartburn’s Red Flags Persistent heartburn may be a sign of something more serious. you eat is kept in the stomach by a ring of muscle fibers at the top of your stomach called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. When the LES doesn’t close well, food, liquid, and stomach acid can leak back into the esophagus. This is called reflux or gastroesophageal reflux. This reflux causes discomfort and may even damage the esophagus. Common risk factors for reflux include hiatal hernia (a condition in which part of the stomach moves above the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities), pregnancy, and scleroderma. Obesity, cigarettes, and possibly alcohol also increase the chance of GERD. How to deal with GERD

hronic heartburn isn’t just about you overeating. The acid reflux may eat away at you, specifically your esophagus. “Occasional heartburn shouldn’t be much of a worry. But if it’s persistent, involves after-exercise pain or if you’re having unplanned weight loss, it’s time to see a physician,” says Dr. Sreenivas Chintalapani, a fellowshiptrained gastroenterologist at the Gastrointestinal Clinic of the Quad Cities. If you have persistent heartburn and you are a white male smoker over age 50 who is losing weight, you’re flying most of the red flags for serious GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). If heartburn is affecting your sleep or your enjoyment of food, doctors are standing by to help you out – and you probably need them. You may find that your doctor recommends an endoscopy. If your doctor sees any of a number of serious conditions, you might be talking about special medication or even surgery to correct a hiatal hernia or

Thanksgiving Soup T By David W. Deuth, President of Weerts Funeral Home
o be totally honest, I don’t remember much about Kindergarten, but I do remember my teacher. I remember that we got to take naps, and I remember that we did something special for Thanksgiving. I suppose we made some turkeys by outlining our hand on fall-colored construction paper. We might have had some shucks of corn and a couple pumpkins in our classroom, too. Probably made a pilgrim hat as best we could. My most vivid Kindergarten memory, however, was making Thanksgiving Soup. Each student was asked to bring a particular vegetable: carrots, potatoes, onions, celery, peas, corn. Our teacher brought in a big stock pot, filled it with meat and broth and put it on the stove. (We actually had a stove!) We sorted the vegetables into groups and then she told us something about each one before washing, chopping and placing each of the ingredients into the stock pot. We learned a little bit about vegetables, I guess. They start as seeds, which are planted and grow in the ground. When they’re done growing, they’re harvested. And they’re supposed to be good for you.
We also learned some important life lessons from making Thanksgiving Soup as Kindergartners. Some of it made sense even then… and some required a little time to sink in until we became adults. We learned that when everyone contributed to a common goal, we could make something special for everyone without creating hardship for anyone. We learned that the earth is a precious gift, and, when used properly, can provide good things for our health, our benefit and our enjoyment. We learned that sometimes things “need a little salt”. We learned that mixing different ingredients together can create delicious flavors that singular ingredients cannot offer on their own. And we learned what it meant to wait as the soup simmered in our classroom kitchen, the aroma growing evermore inviting hour by hour, day by day. After the soup had simmered for a couple of days, our reward was finally realized when we set the table and everyone sat down together to enjoy the culmination of all that we had provided, prepared and learned. And as we prepared to partake of the fruits of our labors, we learned perhaps the most important lesson of all: Giving Thanks. And I still Remember Well. David W.
