Oxana Popescu, M.D. Nancy Rosner

Welcome to Urban Dollhouse and the wonderful world of miniatures. A fascination with all things miniature often starts in childhood and can continue throughout a lifetime. Store proprietor Nancy Rosner is a case in point. “For as long as I can remember, I have loved dollhouses and all of the tiny things that go in them,” she says. Now, Nancy has brought the appeal of miniatures, her preference for the modern style, and her creative skills in furniture making and interior design to Urban Dollhouse. Step into a fantasy world that ignites the imagination. The shop is a trove for the collector and an inspiration for the beginner. Delight in the stylish décor for every tiny room. Notice the level of detail, from artwork to rugs, tiny plants and flower vases, and the very cute miniature food items. Children especially love the iced cupcakes on small platters. So real! Of course, you’ll find dollhouses, too, in many styles and price ranges, also specialty toys, holiday and birthday gifts, and novelty items. Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday to 3 p.m.

Dr. Oxana Popescu, a board-certified internist, is a practitioner in the art and humanity of medicine. As an internist, she employs the skills she learned in her native Romania, refining those abilities here in the U.S. in emergency rooms, urgent care facilities, medical offices, and hospitals in New York City and Westchester. “Nothing is unknown to me,” she says of her knowledge and understanding of the internist’s role in medical practice. In her private moments, Dr. Popescu is an artist and musician. Her progression to aesthetic medicine is a natural extension of that creativity. In her aesthetic practice, DaVinci Med Spa, she seeks to preserve and enhance the natural beauty and unique qualities of each patient. Laser, body contouring, platelet plasma treatments, and injectable treatments provide the results that reward patients and satisfy her artistic nature. Medically, Dr. Popescu takes a personal interest in her patients. Artistically, she delights in the beauty of the village’s green landscapes and river views. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday from 2:30 to 7 p.m., alternate Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

n the age of online purveyors and discount merchandisers, high-quality men’s tailoring is all but gone — but not quite. Nigel’s, one of the newest and most welcome additions to downtown Hastings, has revived the concept of the well-dressed man — the look that immediately says, “This man knows fabric; this man understands fit; this man recognizes quality.” Presiding over Nigel’s is Ali Khatami, an alumnus of Pincus Brothers-Maxwell, one of the venerable names in men’s tailored clothing, and of HickeyFreeman, the American suit manufacturer. Now, with his own brand called “Nigel’s Drape,” modeled after Savile Row suits and other iconic English city and country garments, but with a casual American sensibility, Khatami is making the collection available at his own retail store in Hastings as well as through a wholesale division for top-of-the-line haberdashers across the country. At Nigel’s, the tailored man can purchase readymade or made-to-measure bespoke suits and outerwear, accented by curated accessories, including broadcloth shirts, cashmere sweaters made from the finest yarns, Italian-made jeans and trousers, bench-made shoes, and seven-fold silk ties and pocket squares. Womenswear, too. “Why shouldn’t a woman enjoy the luxury of suits and coats made from menswear cloth?” Khatami observes. “Why can’t a tailored woman bask in the elegance of the finest cashmere sweaters and accessories?” At Nigel’s, she can. “There is always a market for quality,” Khatami says. “There is a soul in well-made clothing.” Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

eter J. Riolo Real Estate represents a powerful force in homeownership and long-term customer relationships. For more than 75 years Riolo Real Estate has been serving the Rivertowns. During that time they have earned a reputation for integrity, service and getting the results people want. All of the sales associates live in the community and embody years of real estate experience and marketing know-how. They know the schools, the neighborhoods and the people. Many of them have been raised here and in turn have raised their children here. As founding members of Westchester Real

Estate, Inc., the Riolo office has joined with other prominent Westchester firms to provide a network of local offices in locations in the county as well as New York City. Individually they thrive on their own, in part, because they are household names in their communities. Collectively, these independent companies use the power of pooled resources to offer the advantages of extensive advertising, training, relocation and networking services. In an era of large, impersonal real estate companies, Peter J. Riolo Real Estate’s one-on-one personal service, first-hand knowledge of the area, highranking sales record and countless years of experience ensure a smooth real estate experience.

Charmed — the name says it all! This charming little shop is Hastings’ gift-buying destination, as well as your best source for decorative touches to celebrate the many holidays and seasons throughout the year. When you walk into the store, it’s like you’re on vacation. Packed with interesting items, you lose yourself in the magic the store has to offer. Holiday-driven, it’s fun to pop in often to see the merchandise as it changes with the seasons. Certainly the biggest draw is the antique candy counter — chocolates and candy sold by the pound — all guaranteed to delight. That means baskets with sweet treats and goodie bags for all occasions. In addition to the candy and seasonal selections, there are kitchen accessories, cards, candles, bath and body products, hostess gifts, jewelry, accessories and party supplies. Charmed is next to Slices, so you can have a pizza there and then order a candy pizza from Charmed. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

t’s been 18 years since Michelle Mosca took over Visual Difference hair salon. During that time, Michelle and her staff have been an important part of their clients’ lives. “We’ve been through so many milestones with them, sharing good times and bad. We feel like we are part of the family,” Michelle says. While at the salon, you will probably run into a neighbor, friend or co-worker and either catch up with the latest gossip or say a quick hello and then relax while your stylist, along with the rest of the staff, tend to your crowning glory (and parking meters!). Michelle attributes the salon’s success to the teamwork of her loyal staff and their continuing education, which keeps them current and up to date while also perfecting the classics. Their goal is to make their clients feel comfortable when they walk in and satisfied when they walk out. “Happy clients with happy hair are our best advertisement,” Michelle says. The salon’s clientele ranges from a girl getting her first bang trim to a visiting in-law. You’re always welcome at Visual Difference. Hours: Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to 8 p.m.

T

he Foodtown supermarket in Hastings stands for three important essentials: fresh, friendly and fair. Fresh: produce, meats, seafood and dairy must meet the rigorous Foodtown standards for freshness and quality before any are stocked in the refrigerator cases. Friendly: Foodtown, a locally owned family business, strives to be the friendliest market, serving you, their neighbor, like one of the family. Fair: at Foodtown, you’ll find a huge variety of delicious foods so you can eat well without exhausting your paycheck or sacrificing the quality you deserve. Stepping into Foodtown, you can feel the energy and warmth of a team ready to bring a smile to your face and acknowledge you by name. Foodtown is where you go to visit with friends, see what’s going on, pick up a few things, and chitchat in the aisles. This holiday season make sure to visit Foodtown — and bring a friend. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you’ll discover. In keeping with a Neighbors Serving Neighbors ethos, your Foodtown family will be launching a Giving Back program to benefit local charities, schools, sports teams and places of worship. Supporters will be able to earn up to 3 percent from their shopping orders to benefit their favorite groups. On top of that, the market will be giving away free Foodtown turkeys to every family who shops with a club

card and spends $400 from now until Thanksgiving Day. Here’s a tip to stay in the know about all the goings on at Foodtown: download the Foodtown app from iTunes and/ or the Android store, link your club card, and sign up for the e-circular. Plus, you can download digital coupons right onto your Foodtown club card. Combine digital coupons with a club card discount and a manufacturer’s coupon to maximize your savings at Foodtown. And that’s just the beginning of the benefits for Foodtown neighbors. Let’s look inside the market: seasonal produce this fall are at their peak right now — pumpkins and apples, all colors of squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, peppers and onions, and root veggies. The deli department has the meats and cheeses, hot and cold prepared foods, salads and desserts for all of your holiday entertaining. The meat and seafood departments are brimming with a full range of fresh and frozen fish and butchered meats — natural and organically grown if you order ahead. And for dessert, think Foodtown’s bakery department for cakes and cookies, of course, plus breads, muffins, croissants and an array of holiday offerings. Kosher, organic, fat-free and glutenfree confections, too. Foodtown is proud to be your neighborhood store. Hours: Open seven days a week. The aestheticians and cosmetologists at Lash House attend to those small, all-toooften neglected details — eyelashes, eyebrows, and the facial hair that can detract from your appearance. At Lash House, women are discovering services that transform how they look and how they feel about themselves. Eyelash extensions and microblading work in tandem to accent your most charismatic feature — the eyes. Just as eyes draw people in, unwanted hair turns them away. The Lash House technique for hair removal destroys those unwanted hair follicles. In a hurry or going out on the town? Be sure to try our express styles, like blow-dries and quick updos or the Brazilian Blowout for longer lasting and straighter hair. We also offer makeup application for everyday and special occasions. Our certified technicians can help teach you the beauty techniques that can launch careers in this fascinating industry. Virginia Velez and her professional staff invite you to visit the relaxing environment of Lash House, to see how something as small as a lash can make such a big difference. here’s big news at Salon Topaz, known for the knowledge and expertise of its stylists, its warm and relaxing atmosphere, and its customer care. Salon owner Lisa DeMaria has declared her salon eco-friendly with all-natural, ammonia-free color and styling products. She has completely revamped her product portfolio to reflect her personal concern for the environment and the safety of her customers. With the exclusive use of two new lines — Kevin Murphy, known as “skin care for your hair,” and Eufora for “products that respect the environment and the people who use them” — customers will never have to compromise their health for beautiful hair and skin, Lisa says. In another change, Salon Topaz, has expanded into a fully redesigned interior space that is more comfortable and inviting than ever. Of course, a salon is only as great as its services, and Salon Topaz excels in the services for women and men offered by four stylists and three apprentices: precision cuts, razor cuts, brow tinting and shaping, customized color and highlighting, hair painting, blow-dries, plus scalp treatments for a 20-minute, stress-free spa experience, where customers seem to “melt into the chair,” Lisa says. One of the salon’s essential services is hairstyling and makeup for special occasions, such as weddings, Sweet 16s, proms and bat mitzvahs. Is it any wonder that Westchester magazine has recognized Salon Topaz as best salon and best stylists for the past 11 years! Hours: Tuesday through Saturday. Call or check the website for hours.

Where do they find this stuff? Three guys who love comics, punk rock records and books, and horror — lots of horror — started collecting maybe 21 years ago, and now they’ve put it all together in one place — NYHC Comics. A hobby has grown into a business, and serious collectors looking for the rare and in-demand, as well as the just-curious looking for fun are having a blast checking out the inventory — comic book and movie characters, toys, masks, vinyl records, and statues. The stash gets bigger every week. “We love horror,” says Lee Farrelly, who with his partners, Dave DeCicco and Debo Da Pro, opened this amazing place only a year ago — and already it’s been discovered. Are you into zombies? How about Freddy Krueger? Maybe Spider Man for the kids? Whatever pops in pop culture, NYHC has it. “Come on it, and let’s talk comics,” they say. hree years ago, healthier eating got easier with the opening of Mix on Main Health Bar at 63 Main St. in Dobbs Ferry. Owner Vance Campbell, who is committed to healthful eating himself and enjoys running, worked in the restaurant business for six years before deciding to open his own health food restaurant. Mix on Main offers a variety of tasty options for nutrient-rich, good-for-you, dine-in or takeout lunches and dinner, and will also deliver. Diners can create their own salad with a green, leafy base and add toppings for a customized, fresh meal. Satisfying protein bowls come with a choice of quinoa or brown rice. Add chicken, steak, tofu, shrimp or grilled veggies, then a sauce: Asian sesame, barbecue, sweet chili, or wasabi for a savory finish. Juicing is part of many lifestyles these days, and Mix on Main offers juices and smoothies that are made from 100 percent organic fruit and vegetables — and absolutely no GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Customers can choose from a list of cleansing and energizing juices or build one from fresh ingredients. Salads, wraps, panini, soups and daily specials round out the menu with new items always being added. New this year is the addition of meal prep meals. Choose from our meal prep menu or create your own. “Dobbs Ferry is a foodie town,” Campbell says, and he is happy to offer another option on the thriving restaurant scene with Mix on Main’s healthy fare. If Campbell doesn’t have what you want for your dietary needs, he’ll get it for you. “I don’t believe in the word no,” he says. “If I don’t have it now, I’ll have it for you tomorrow.” Hours: Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday to 6 p.m.

Carol Lancellotti, Chicklet Morales, Jean Greenberg and Linda Cronquist Betsy Helmuth, owner/designer

“Everyone should have a beautiful home.” That’s what Betsy Helmuth thought 12 years ago, when she founded Affordable Interior Design — the antidote to highpriced design solutions. “What about people like me?” she wondered. “How does the everyday working family create stylish rooms and welcoming environments?” Answer? Affordable Interior Design, a project roadmap that tells clients exactly what to get, where to put it, and where to buy it — maybe Ikea, maybe Pottery Barn — places that offer good design essentials at reasonable prices. She begins with a questionnaire that helps her team get to know you and your design goals. An inhome consultation solidifies the concept, which is followed by a comprehensive plan that includes a layout and a detailed shopping list — even wall paint and artwork. You make the purchases, follow the plan and — Viola! — a spectacular result, created by Betsy and her team, inspired and carried out by you. It’s easy, affordable and stress-free. Residential and commercial clients welcome to call, or stop by the storefront in Dobbs Ferry. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Private parties and classes on weekends. o talk about Phelps Medical Associates with Dr. Cynthia Brown, an internist at the 11 Ashford Ave. location — one of three sites Phelps Medical Associates maintains in Dobbs Ferry — of course you will hear about the many health services and benefits the group provides to patients. You will also find that one word repeatedly enters the conversation with Dr. Brown, and that word clearly sums up the Phelps Medical Associates health care story. That one word is: comprehensive. “At Phelps Medical Associates, we are part of the community,” Dr. Brown says. “We get to know our patients — their medical, psychological, and social histories — and we treat the total patient. That is comprehensive medicine.” As an internist, a primary care doctor in a comprehensive medical practice, she can, for example, recommend routine tests and screenings. Most radiology tests can be done right at the Dobbs Ferry office (mammography, bone densitometry, X-ray and ultrasound), and lab specimens can also be collected on-site. “It all happens here,” she says. “This is comprehensive medical care. It covers a simple inoculation like an annual flu shot to complex procedures involving a team of diagnosticians.” Phelps Medical Associates has three locations in Dobbs Ferry. The doctors at 11 Ashford Ave. include four primary care specialists (internal medicine and family medicine)

who promote disease prevention, and diagnose and treat chronic and acute health conditions. The site also has a cardiologist, endocrinologist and gastroenterologist. Obstetrics and gynecology are practiced at 18 Ashford Ave. The doctors there focus on prenatal care, reproductive health, fertility, high-risk pregnancy, family planning, breast health, and gynecological health. Family medicine care is also offered at 20 Beacon Hill Drive. Whereas internists treat only adults, family medicine physicians also care for younger people in the context of their families and the community. If a routine physical reveals that a patient requires intervention by a medical specialist, the Phelps Medical Associates doctors at all three locations have access to their local network of specialists, such as their orthopedists, dermatologists, rheumatologists and other specialists — whatever is required to care for the patient. “We provide a collaborative path to good care for our patients,” Dr. Brown says. Phelps Medical Associates is the primary and specialty care medical group of Phelps Hospital, a 238-bed acute care community hospital in Sleepy Hollow. In 2014, Phelps became part of Northwell Health (formerly known as North Shore-LIJ Health System). Phelps Medical Associates and its patients benefit from the support and resources of Northwell, the largest health care system in New York State. Hours: Medical care is available seven days a week.

oseph Pilates developed a low-impact method of exercise and physical movement to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. What does that mean? In practice, the Pilates method focuses on muscle tone, posture, balance, and flexibility. Practiced faithfully, you will see a difference in the first month; you will feel a difference in the next month; and in the month after that, you will have a Pilates body. That’s the promise and the result that thousands of devotees have discovered. And now, you can be on your way to a Pilates body — at an affordable price — in either of two convenient Club Pilates locations in Westchester — Ardsley and Scarsdale. Club Pilates caters to all levels of fitness, from beginners, where participants start to build a solid foundation, to more complex movements that challenge both body and mind, and finally to a deep mind-body connection that Club Pilates members find life-changing and life-affirming. Pilates increases lung capacity, strengthens abdominal and back muscles, increases core strength, and improves bone density and joint health. A 500-hour Pilates certification program is required for all instructors. Club Pilates offers various levels of membership with a three-month commitment. Some members want to come to the club only once a week, others twice a week, and serious fitness enthusiasts will sign on for three times or more per week, even every day if desired. Call for a free demonstration class. Hours: Open seven days a week, according to class schedules.

Robert J. Bernstein, director of Autism Speech

Mark S. Briskin, D.D.S.

Since opening his practice in 1979, Dr. Mark Briskin has been exceeding the expectations of his patients. He notes, “As part of our commitment to exceptional care, we treat every patient with respect and understanding. We feel that your relationship with us should be one of mutual comfort and trust. To us, excellent care means a total commitment to the 100 percent satisfaction of our patients.” Technology has revolutionized the level of care that restorative and cosmetic dentistry can achieve. Dr. Briskin’s office has embraced technology to improve patient care and experience. These technologic advances include laser-assisted dentistry, digital oral scanner impression system, joint vibration analysis, computerized bite analysis, computerized shade matching, oral cancer screening and digital X-ray system, among others. Dr. Briskin’s emphasis on comprehensive care in his practice includes fine cosmetic, restorative, implant and general dentistry, smile makeovers, TMJ treatment, and nonsurgical gum therapy. He and his staff are always happy to welcome new patients to his practice.

Mark S. Briskin,

D.D.S.

Rob’s new book, “Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism,” with the foreword by Temple Grandin, is a great resource for parents with a child on the autism spectrum. Here’s what people are saying: “Bernstein’s methodology, developed after years of experience in the present educational system, demonstrates a revolutionary cognitive approach to autism that departs from current practice. It is a must read for all parents and professionals dealing with children with autism.” — Douglas P. Hudson, MD, MPH “Without exception, Rob Bernstein’s work with these patients has markedly improved their ability to function effectively with others. He has a unique ability to engage with people, gently yet firmly coaxing them into the wider world, often for the first time. Once there, he guides them toward claiming their competence and channeling their untapped strengths. I stand behind Rob Bernstein’s techniques without reservation.” — Ram Kairam, MD, Pediatric Neurologist, Developmental Neurology Associates; Professor of Clinical Neurology, Columbia University Medical Center “Robert Bernstein is one of the smartest, most perceptive people I know. No matter where someone falls on the scale of ‘normal,’ Bernstein finds a way to connect.” — Will Shortz, The New York Times’s crossword editor The book is available on Amazon.com.

egends Realty Group is an independent affiliate of William Raveis Real Estate. The company was founded by five top-producing agents, Elvira Aloia, Mary Case Friedner, Marcene Hedayati, Phyllis Lerner and Karen Stroub, who bring a combined total of more than 100 years of experience with them. Their goal, from the start, has been to create a unique team-like atmosphere. They attribute their success to adhering to their mission of setting higher standards and offering unsurpassed service. With their first office in Sleepy Hollow and second in Tarrytown, followed by their affiliation in January 2011 with William Raveis Real Estate — the No. 1 independently owned firm in the Northeast — Legends became the first to test the franchise model in New York. “We have the best of both worlds. We have been able to continue nurturing our current business practices and methods that have distinguished us from the rest and, at the same time, enjoy the many tools and systems that you can only find in a larger company. Not to mention their exceptional education program and second to none referral network. Most importantly, we are fortunate to have found a company that shares

our philosophy and culture,” says Marcene Hedayati, principal owner/broker. Legends continued their extraordinary expansion with the opening of offices in Briarcliff Manor in 2011, Irvington in 2012 and Hastings-on-Hudson in 2014. The company just recently announced a merger with Hudson Homes of Tarrytown, resolutely establishing William Raveis Legends Realty Group as a worthy market leader in the Rivertowns. This remarkable growth has brought the number of Legends agents to more than 85 to date and has afforded them the position of being ranked among the top 10 real estate companies, based on sales volume, in Westchester County since 2014.* They are actively involved in the community and, although the Legends offices call the Rivertowns their home, all the agents are equally well-versed in all areas of Westchester County. The agents can provide invaluable knowledge to sellers and buyers about their options in today’s challenging market. They pride themselves on the quality, experience and personal touch they offer their clients. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our Irvington brokerage consists of 20 agents, all of whom bring great resources, knowledge and expertise of the local area. The Sotheby’s brand dates back to 1744, when the venerable auction house was founded and quickly earned the worldwide reputation it still enjoys today as the renowned marketer of some of the world’s most valuable possessions. Recognizing the need to offer its clients a complete package of estate services and marketing, Sotheby’s auction house formed Sotheby’s International Realty in 1976. Today, the Sotheby’s International Realty network has evolved into the most prestigious global real estate brand, comprising a network of the most respected real estate firms in the most desirable destinations all over the world. Our brand’s white glove referral program enables network members to connect qualified buyers and sellers globally. Orchestrated by a dedicated team of professionals, thousands of these connections are made every month — from broker-to-broker to auction house-to-broker. Only one real estate brand has it all. At Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, the advantages we bring are ours alone.

onnecting what her clients’ value, to what she does, is the driver for the service Dalia Valdes provides to all buyers and sellers. Having grown up in the Rivertowns and now raising her family there, Dalia understands the pulse of the area, from its intriguing history to its nationally ranked schools. She knows where to shop and where to go for a special occasion; she delights in its picturesque charm and easy-going lifestyle, its oasis of calm. Having an established presence in all of the five Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty offices, (Rye, Scarsdale, Larchmont, Irvington and Bronxville) Dalia is well-positioned to serve buyers and sellers alike. Recently, a buyer working with a colleague in Rye was searching for a property close to a private school in Riverdale. Dalia offered to introduce this Rye home

shopper to the Rivertowns and to properties that would more than meet the housing criteria and still be within a short commute of the school. The resulting sale is just one example of how Dalia successfully bridges the gap between buyers looking in other villages and the equally desirable Rivertowns. Leveraging opportunities like this one has helped make her the top Rivertowns broker at Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s. Dalia brings a wealth of business experience to every real estate transaction. Clients benefit from her previous corporate financial background, global connections, international travels, and negotiating skills — always achieving peak prices for sellers and extraordinary values for buyers. And they benefit, too, from her expertise in the Rivertowns — in the cultural amenities, financial rewards and quality lifestyle — in what to her, is the best side of Westchester County.

Students also benefit from master classes, workshops, and coaching with world-renowned guest artists and members of the New York Philharmonic, with which the school has partnered for more than 20 years. Hoff-Barthelson has achieved national recognition for its unsurpassed leadership in education, performance and community service; and has long been one of Westchester County’s most cherished cultural resources. Enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Tuition is prorated, based on time of enrollment.

hat’s in a name? When it comes to real estate and the magnitude of the decision-making involved, a name means a lot. For instance, do you know that Real Living Real Estate was named “Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year,” with a 97 percent satisfaction rating for an unprecedented two years in a row — 2016 and 2017? And do you know that Real Living was named the “Most Trusted” real estate brand in the 29th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend® study? And do you know that Real Living is the luxury brand of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway family of affiliated companies — the Omaha genius behind the world’s most successful investments? So, yes, when it comes to real estate, a name means a lot. Whether you are buying or selling and looking for the best company to represent your interests, the name to look for is Five Corners Properties/Real Living. Five Corners Properties is the locally owned boutique agency for discerning buyers and sellers, and the only area agency for international MLS listings, which provides access to many more prospects seeking the sophisticated properties that characterize the Scarsdale market. Let’s say you want to buy a home in Scarsdale. You want agents who live locally and who understand the various assets of each Scarsdale neighborhood. You want

agents who know about the schools, how to commute to work, and how long it’s likely to take. You’ll want to know about shopping and delivery services, and the athletic and recreational opportunities here, as well as the social life. With their stellar training, Five Corners Properties’ trusted advisers can show you how to compare one house to another and, most importantly, how to narrow the choices so that you will enjoy living in your new home for years to come. Suppose you want to sell a property. A Five Corners Properties QHA (Qualified Home Assessment) will help you set the appropriate price to make your home attractive to buyers — too high, and you’re priced out of the market; too low, and it raises suspicions about something amiss. With our tips, your home will have good curb appeal, inviting buyers to want to look inside. And with our marketing expertise and online resources, your property will be positioned for a quicker sale and a higher price than you might expect. Put your real estate needs in the hands of Five Corners Properties. Gain access to international buyers, Connecticut buyers and sellers at our sister location (across from Whole Foods in Greenwich), and those in our 4,000 network offices. We are experienced, committed to your goals, and trained to unravel the many steps to buy and sell real estate. Working with us is always a pleasure. Hours: Open seven days a week.

Anna Krosche

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

iana White, founding artistic director of the Scarsdale Ballet Studio (SBS), is thrilled to be celebrating the school’s 25th anniversary. A former leading ballerina of the New York City Ballet, dance has been her life’s passion since she was 3 years old. Sharing her love of ballet and her professional experience with people of all ages is her mission in Westchester. Now a sought-after international master teacher and Balanchine specialist, Diana fosters an atmosphere of encouragement, dedication and camaraderie at her school. She has assembled a world-class faculty, providing the traditional classical ballet training and coaching that enables students to achieve their fullest potential. SBS has a proud history of alumni who have gone on to dance in major ballet companies and who are regularly accepted to elite dance conservatories and colleges. But Diana and her team are just as proud of their hundreds of graduates who succeed in a great variety of professions and for whom ballet is still a significant part of their lives. Beyond extolling the rewards and benefits of ballet training for children, from their early through teen years, Diana is impassioned about the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits of ballet classes for adults — both young and the not-so-young. SBS welcomes absolute beginners through experienced dancers and will soon host classes for Parkinson’s patients. It’s never too early or too late to start dancing! Creative ballet, technique, pointe, partnering, character, and conditioning classes take place in spacious professional studios. SBS offers several performing opportunities, including an annual “Nutcracker” at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College.

A sense of community has defined the Jewish people for more than 5,000 years, and that spirit — that commitment to connection and togetherness — is as relevant today as it was in the time of our ancestors. At Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El, a Reform congregation, we embrace our heritage to the Jewish people and to each other. Building connections and building community permeate every facet of our programming: our worship services on Shabbat and the holidays; the educational opportunities we offer through our nursery school, religious school and adult education; the community action committees pursuing the concept of tikkun olam (acts of kindness to repair the world); and our social activities that draw us together to rejoice in the beauty of living a Jewish life. Join us. Pray with us. Sing with us. Learn with us. Celebrate with us. When our family connects with yours, all of us can be stronger and happier. We look forward to greeting you. Office hours: Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays to 2 p.m.

Shamar Watson, director of Mount Vernon After School Academy; Nina Ross, WJCS board member and Sarah Kayle, WJCS board member

Children in two Mount Vernon elementary schools are reaping the rewards of two enrichment programs in the After-School Academy, sponsored by Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), one of the county’s largest human services agencies. Activities in the “Amazing Afternoons” program at the Edward Williams Elementary School, for grades 1 to 6, and the “Off the Street” program at the Hamilton Elementary School, for grades 2 through 6, begin with a healthy snack for the approximately 120 students in each program. The fun continues with music, books, sports, STEM learning, occasional field trips, and even homework assistance to help the children excel. The storybook hour, co-chaired by volunteers Sarah Kayle, Nina Ross and Cynthia Samwick, is just one of the quality activities popular with kids and their parents. The joy of story improves literacy, encourages discussion, and exposes young people to the world beyond their classrooms and neighborhoods. Assisting with the programs are trained high school students from Mount Vernon and Scarsdale, Westchester Reform Temple volunteers, neighborhood moms, and former students. More volunteers are always needed. Office hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

haarei Tikvah is a friendly, vibrant congregation with an active, engaged membership. The only synagogue in Scarsdale affiliated with the Conservative movement, we warmly welcome Jews of all backgrounds, levels of observance, and sexual orientation. We welcome intermarried couples, incorporating both partners into our community life. Our smaller size fosters an intimacy not found in larger shuls. It’s easy to get involved, build relationships with clergy and staff, and form friendships across generations. Shaarei Tikvah offers a dynamic religious school and a roster of activities for teens, families and adults. Participate in religious services (we’re fully egalitarian). Attend a class or Lunch & Learn. Join our Purim spiel cast. Chop vegetables at a Cooking Day for the hungry. Play softball or enjoy “Vodka and Latkes” with friends. No one goes away hungry from Shaarei Tikvah, especially after our weekly Shabbat Kiddush. We welcome new people, new ideas and new ways of making our services more meaningful. Rabbi Baldachin and Sara Birnbaum, our educational director, are happy to meet with prospective members. Call the office for an appointment. As wise homeowners know, regular maintenance is cost-effective. And one of the most important ways to maintain the integrity of your house, as well as its good looks, is with a quality paint job. Service Unlimited has been offering Old World craftsmanship to homeowners for more than a quarter of a century. The success of the company is all in the name: Service Unlimited. We are housepainters, but the application of paint is at the end of the job, not the beginning. First comes power-washing to create a clean surface, then scraping off cracked and flaking paint, followed by sanding rough areas. The next step is to apply fresh caulk around doors and windows to prevent moisture from rotting out wood frames. Other pre-paint services include reglazing windows, nailing down loose boards, filling in nail holes, applying a primer/sealer coat of paint, and only then the finishing coat. From Cape Cods to multistory mansions, Service Unlimited means superior customer service, including daily cleanup and exceptional workmanship. Just ask our customers. Office hours: Call anytime.

Smart shoppers who have discovered Mixology, the 8-year-old emporium for comfortable, casual and occasion dressing in the Village Center, are learning the practical and aesthetic benefits of mix and match — hence, mixology. Here, moms and their daughters can successfully pair, say, a luxurious cashmere sweater with an equally gorgeous but more economical skirt or trouser. The result: a smashing ensemble that mixes outfits with price points that won’t break the bank. Store owner Gabrielle Edwards is the enthusiastic spokesperson for the sartorial art form, recounting how her after-school job at a shop on Long Island sold her on the brand’s mission — to which she is totally committed in her own place. What’s there to discover at Mixology? Jac Parker casuals, denim by Hidden and Flying Monkey, pleather skirts by Brooklyn Karma, cashmere by Decker and Wyse, Jocelyn fur accessories, and lots more. At Mixology and the newly opened outlet next door, you can develop the confidence to become the best version of yourself. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to 8 p.m., Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ruffled Feathers Gourmet Rotisserie, the popular takeout spot, is now entering its 27th year, and its delicious prepared foods have become standard fare in most homes in and around Scarsdale. Owners Ken and George specialize in preparing healthy and low-fat foods using the best and freshest ingredients available. Besides the great rotisserie chickens, other items are available from the rotisserie, such as Long Island duck, Cornish game hens, fresh turkeys, and garlic and herb-crusted filet mignon. They also have oversized grilled chicken breast and skinless fried chicken, which is low in both cholesterol and fat but high in flavor. For those who choose not to have chicken, they offer many other dishes: grilled salmon, sole française, turkey chili, turkey burgers, baby back ribs and assorted pasta dishes are among the highlights. Other notable delicacies available at Ruffled Feathers include homemade coleslaw, kasha varnishkas (that would make grandma proud), rice pudding, mélange of roasted vegetables, purée of butternut squash, creamed spinach (it’s really creamless); cranberry, walnut and apple compote; solid white tuna with dried cranberries and apples; homemade soups and of course, their famous chopped chicken liver. Trust and Integrity in the Rivertowns No. 1 Realtor

oulihan Lawrence was founded in 1888 with a commitment to trust and integrity, which has been our hallmark for more than 100 years. Today, the company is the No. 1 leader in market share and remains the area’s largest independently owned Realtor with 30 offices and 1,200-plus agents serving Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties and our newest location in Greenwich, Connecticut. We pride ourselves in having the resources and network that a national company would have — our own inhouse marketing division, an award-winning relocation department, as well as our affiliation with Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, Mayfair International Realty, and Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate. We still, however, have been able to retain the personal touch of

the local hometown Realtor, because not only are our offices staffed by residents of the towns they serve, but each office is supported by a Westchester headquarters that can be immediately responsive to our local, changing market. The Irvington office, combined with the Ardsley office — staffed with committed professionals — continues to be the dominant market-share leader in total sales volume in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Put these two amazing groups together and you have an invincible and matchless team of more than 50 agents. We have all set the standards for excellence in customer service and will gladly accept the challenge to serve our neighbors during this ever-changing time. Please feel free to call upon any one of us and we will be vigilant in attending to your every need.
