eter J. Riolo Real Estate represents a powerful force in homeownership and long-term customer relationships. For more than 75 years Riolo Real Estate has been serving the Rivertowns. During that time they have earned a reputation for integrity, service and getting the results people want. All of the sales associates live in the community and embody years of real estate experience and marketing know-how. They know the schools, the neighborhoods and the people. Many of them have been raised here and in turn have raised their children here. As founding members of Westchester Real Estate, Inc., the Riolo office has joined with other prominent Westchester firms to provide a network of local offices in locations in the county as well as New York City. Individually they thrive on their own, in part, because they are household names in their communities. Collectively, these independent companies use the power of pooled resources to offer the advantages of extensive advertising, training, relocation and networking services. In an era of large, impersonal real estate companies, Peter J. Riolo Real Estate’s oneon-one personal service, first-hand knowledge of the area, high-ranking sales record and countless years of experience ensure a smooth real estate experience.

Charmed — the name says it all! This charming little shop is Hastings’ gift-buying destination, as well as your best source for decorative touches to celebrate the many holidays and seasons throughout the year. Having spent 19 years working in Hastings, Taresa Caruso knows just what her customers want. “When you walk into my store it’s like you’re on vacation. You can find so many interesting things here, you can forget about everything else for a few minutes,” says Caruso. “And it’s fun to come back and see how the merchandise changes with the seasons.” Certainly the biggest draw is the candy counter — chocolates sold by the pound and trays of candy — all guaranteed to delight. That means baskets with sweet treats and goodie bags for kids’ parties. Charmed is not all about the candy. In addition to the seasonal and holiday selections, there are kitchen accessories, cards, candles, bath and body products, party supplies, hostess gifts, jewelry and accessories. Linda Angel

Amada Abad

Linda Angel, owner of Art Transcending Time, designs jewelry that is more than just an accessory to wear; it is a true work of art. She incorporates antique Italian micro mosaics with semi-precious stones strung on silk to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Her jewelry is crafted in a wide variety of colors, most typically in blues, greens and warm earthy tones. “I get inspired by each antique mosaic that I work with,” Linda says. Her custom-made necklaces are created by combining a sparkling antique chandelier crystal with a personal photo, often of ancestors. “I love making these memory pieces for my customers,” says Linda, adding that she enjoys hearing the personal stories and history some of her customers share while ordering their jewelry. “Each necklace represents a connection between the past and present.” Stop into Linda’s studio and boutique to see her at work and learn more about her “unique handmade jewelry transcending time.” Hours: Wednesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of Galapagos Books, a classic Rivertowns bookstore with an outstanding selection of children’s books and adult books in Spanish, French, Italian, German and more. There are also English titles, including bestsellers, children’s literature, young adult novels and nonfiction. Following the literary passion of Susan Lindsay, the store’s founder, current owner Amada Abad fosters a love of reading and supports the work of talented local authors. Galapagos Books also offers quality toys and unusual gifts. Customers are welcome to browse the extensive inventory or request a special order. For titles still in print, orders arrive within two days, with no added shipping charge. Orders may be placed in person or online. Galapagos Books is the perfect source for out-of-print titles by local authors, as well as beautiful collectible books autographed by authors or illustrators. Check their website for poetry readings and special book-signing events. Amada looks forward to seeing you at the store’s holiday book signing, featuring many Hudson Valley authors on Nov. 9, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Hastings Community Center. Why take your pets to the vet’s office when we can come to you? You don’t have to bundle an anxious dog or fractious cat into the car and sit in a crowded waiting room only to have a brief visit with the vet and “one size fits all” care. Dr. Eve Martin will come to your home at a time that’s convenient for you, and give you the same service you would get at the clinic — only better. She offers personalized, whole animal care including nutritional assessments. Her service covers everything from puppy and kitten visits, routine vaccinations, and sick visits through to elder pet care. Dr. Martin spends about 45 minutes with you and your pet taking a complete history, diagnosing illnesses, doing examinations and blood tests and discussing your animal’s health. With access to local animal hospitals and specialists, she can transfer her patients for routine procedures and emergencies. She also offers sameday visits for urgent cases. “Taking the time to listen and communicate with owners is essential to helping their animal,” Dr Martin says. Call 400-6113 or email drmartinvet@gmail.com to find out more about how The Visiting Vet Service can make your “trip to the vet” a pleasant at-home experience.

Pete Linkowski and Dennis Linkowski

Since 2005, Ardsley resident Lauren Kardish and her experienced staff at Playdates for Pets have gone beyond pet care to provide enriching experiences for your animal companions. The company offers care in your home while you’re at work or on vacation (they’ll even sleep over at your home in the Rivertowns and surrounding areas). They can tend to every animal from birds and fish to cats and dogs. Going away? Board your pet at one of their homes, where the number of “houseguests” is limited and pets enjoy a family environment. For a change of pace, how about a pet playdate? It’s a fun two-hour playgroup where dogs socialize, have fun and burn off excess energy in a fenced, supervised yard, with separate playgroups for large and small dogs. Or book your furry friend for their Pet Hikes program: it’s great for dogs who need more exercise or to practice good manners and leash walking skills. Playdates for Pets is bonded, fully insured and members of Pet Sitters International.

Lynx Transport Company (aka 478-PETE) has been a family business since 1981, offering personalized moving services. The owner, Hastings resident Pete Linkowski, offers free estimates and delivery of packing supplies. We also offer complete packing services. We remove unwanted furniture and will do attic, garage and basement cleanouts. We give you the option of loading a vehicle yourself for later disposal. Call for details. We pride ourselves on prompt service and reliability. We are licensed (D.O.T. #11532) and insured. We call you back! Our business philosophy is simple — we have knowledgeable, experienced movers, we have modern, up-to-date equipment, and we work hard at pleasing our customers. Ask about our new services: house cleanouts, dump runs and our longdistance referral program. This basic “hard-work-pays-off” philosophy has paid off in the past thanks to the support of local real estate agents, prior customers and neighbors. We thank you for your business and are looking forward to serving you in the future. Please visit our website, where you will find helpful hints to make your move easier.

Anna, who grew up in Brooklyn, working in her parents’ specialty salumeria, has a passion for fine, natural food and beauty products. At Au Naturel, she has created an alternative to the flood of toxic mainstream products that we use every day. ew York School of Esthetics offers the New York State 600-hour esthetics (skin care) course, which leads to eligibility to sit for the state-board testing procedures. It is our mission to provide an exciting, wellplanned curriculum for students, one that will put you ahead in this fast-growing industry. The function of the school is to provide a professional environment where the student learns the theory and principles (hands-on) in esthetics. We will prepare all students for their New York State esthetic written and practical board exams. Since opening, New York School of Esthetics has not raised its tuition and includes more certifications in the undergraduate program than any other school of its kind. These certifications include microdermabrasion, basic chemical peel, body treatments and teeth whitening. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions that include working with plastic surgeons and skin care specialists. The school’s graduates are employed in dermatologists’ offices and day spas throughout Westchester and Rockland counties. As one student said, “I learned so much compared to other schools of esthetics and they made us feel more like family rather than just friends! I graduated knowing that I am a professional with great knowledge in skin care!” New York School of Esthetics is fully accredited by National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, Inc., (NACCAS) and offers financial aid to those who qualify. We participate in the Pell Grant program, Direct Student Loans and Parent Plus Loans.

efore you decide to get cozy by the fire this winter, let Mr. Chimney make sure your fireplace and chimney are safe and secure for your home and family. Since 1970, Mr. Chimney has been a family-owned residential and commercial business serving New York and Connecticut. Mr. Chimney, a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild, takes pride in putting customer safety first. They will clean, repair and service all furnace, wood-burning stove and fireplace flues, to keep you safe from silent — but deadly — carbon monoxide leaks throughout the year. The National Fire Protection Association and the National Chimney Sweep Guild recommend oil furnaces be cleaned every year, gas furnaces be cleaned every three to five years, and fireplaces be inspected and cleaned yearly, based on usage. Smoky fireplaces are Mr. Chimney’s specialty. With the price of oil climbing ever upward and natural gas prices dropping to historically low rates, now may be the time to consider

switching fuel sources. Mr. Chimney handles gas conversions when switching from an oil- to a gas-fired furnace. This service includes generating the required affidavit that a full inspection and cleaning was performed and that your chimney liner is in good shape — all in compliance with Con Edison’s safety guidelines. Chimney repair services include thorough inspections, video camera inspections, resolving smoke drafting issues, solving water leaks, rebuilding fireboxes, rebuilding brick chimneys, making damper repairs, expert masonry work, repointing, waterproofing and animal and nest removal. Installations include flue liners, standard-size caps, custom-made caps, Exhausto fans, turbine caps, fireplace glass doors, firebox inserts, custom-made chase pans, metal smoke stacks, copper flashing, and top and bottom dampers. It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

Dr. David Klein Dr. Robert A. Cohen, AuD; Sabrina Appollonio, administrative assistant and Gina Cosentino, office manager

Your hearing is one of the most important things you don’t think about — unless, of course, you’re having trouble. So when you need help, Sprain Brook Hearing Center — one of the largest private-practice audiology centers in Westchester — is nearby to help you maintain your hearing health. Offering diagnostic as well as routine hearing tests (recommended once per year and covered by most insurance plans), the office dispenses all makes and models of hearing aids, listening devices, and swim and iPod molds. Tinnitus treatment and retraining is also available. Sprain Brook Hearing Center always puts you and your hearing first. Dr. Robert Cohen, at the helm since 1983, is an expert in the field of audiology. He’s trusted not only by his patients, but by hospitals, nursing homes, schools and doctors. Stop by for an easy evaluation, or call to make an appointment. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A graduate of George Washington University and New York Chiropractic College, Dr. David Klein’s been in practice for 30 years, specializing in applied kinesiology and balancing the body via muscles and ligaments. “The posture of the body changes with a sports or dance injury,” he says. “I look at the frame of the body — one side versus the other, top to bottom — to balance the muscles, ligaments and frame.” Dr. Klein doesn’t perform any “twisting,” “cracking” or “pulling” on the body. Instead, he uses a tool known as the Activator to make most body and spinal corrections. Having achieved advanced proficiency rating in the Activator method, Dr. Klein treats young children as well as older patients. Professional athletes, dancers and performers are patients of Dr. Klein, who integrates the upper and lower body to ensure correct gait. “We test shoes and sneakers for correct fit, because poor-fitting shoes affect the whole body,” Dr. Klein says. “Many patients with chronic lower back pain or shoulder problems are using poorfitting orthotics. We construct foot orthotics and test a patient’s current orthotic to see if it’s correct.” Hours: By appointment.

Scott Wunderlich and Arthur Wunderlich Matthew (Neal) Hibbert and Judy Levine

When Arthur Wunderlich opened Village Wine & Spirit Shop in the mid-1970s, local wine enthusiasts focused on imports. Arthur knew it was only a matter of time before American wines were as popular as Bordeaux and Burgundy. Named One of Westchester’s Great Wine Shops by Westchester magazine and rated five stars for its outstanding website, they have one of the largest selections of American wines in addition to the best of Europe — from Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhone Valley to Italy, Spain and Portugal — and exciting wines from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America. Scott Wunderlich gave up his job as a trial attorney to come into the shop full-time. In an era where boutique importers and distributors have been gobbled up by large houses, he seeks out importers and distributors believing in quality instead of quantity. Whether in the shop or on the website, we offer personal service in the selection of wines that will complement your taste and distinctive menus. Local and worldwide delivery. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday through Saturday to 8 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Upon entering Designer’s Corner, you are surrounded by lovely, quality antique and vintage furniture, mirrors, artwork, lighting and accessories. We are the tristate area’s leading source of fully restored vintage chandeliers, sconces and lamps. Before opening Designer’s Corner more than 15 years ago, Judy Levine devoted her full time to interior design. She’s completed hundreds of projects — primarily residential, but also executive offices, shops and restaurants — and has a great deal of experience with construction. Judy is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and is NCIDQ certified. Neal Hibbert, shop manager, is our lighting and restoration expert. With more than 40 years of design experience and a huge inventory of everything to furnish a home or model apartment, Designer’s Corner is the obvious choice. Whether moving in or staging a space, consider the advantages of a quick, professional solution to your needs. Speak to Judy, Neal or our other excellent staff members, who are happy to brainstorm with you and determine how Designer’s Corner can help.

Ruffled Feathers Gourmet Rotisserie, the popular takeout spot, is now entering its 22nd year, and its delicious prepared foods have become standard fare in most homes in and around Scarsdale. Owners Ken and George specialize in preparing healthy and low-fat foods using the best and freshest ingredients available. Besides the great rotisserie chickens, other items are available from the rotisserie, such as Long Island duck, Cornish game hens, fresh turkeys, and garlic and herb-crusted filet mignon. rom personal insurance — life, health, long-term care, vehicle, homeowner’s and renter’s — to all forms of business insurance, including cybersecurity, the Plum Insurance Agency meets every need and reviews each client’s coverage on a yearly basis. If you and your current insurance provider don’t hold this kind of annual conversation, you’d be wise to contact Plum for a free-of-charge consultation. “Many new clients — homeowners as well as business owners — are coming in and requesting that we review their coverage,” says CEO/president Ellen Plum. “We do really meaningful work for all our clients by looking at what insurance they have and spending time talking with them about the coverage they actually need.” Particularly now, in this tight economy, it’s important to be sure one’s income is being spent wisely. Because purchasing insurance can be confusing, holding a conversation with a Plum agent about an insurance portfolio before recommendations are made can be a priceless addition to peace of mind. How much insurance is enough, and is it affordable? Also, if there’s a claim, can a knowledgeable, caring agent be reached quickly? There’s no anxiety with Plum, whose roots date back to 1949. Personal service is a hallmark of this three-generation, family-owned, independent agency. Plum’s agents work with many insurance companies, and as a result, rates are often lower than those found at much larger competitors, which can’t offer anything close to Plum’s comprehensive care. To see for yourself, stop in or make an appointment. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to 7 p.m. Evenings and weekends by appointment.

Amy Nevins with Annabelle

A high-fashion consignment shop, Juleigh’s Resale Couture carries Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Loro Piana, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, and more — everyday couture fashion, plus current designer eveningwear — making Juleigh’s a one-stop shopping experience at 70 to 80 percent savings. Our vintage collection of couture eveningwear has been a fabulous success, as women know they will be purchasing a one-of-a-kind gown and will be assured they will not see their gown on anyone else. We also have vintage couture evening coats and vintage LV, Chanel and Gucci bags. Everything you could possibly want is here for your pleasure, including artwork, estate and vintage jewelry, and odd and unusual finds for your home, including a 5-foot handmade replica of the luxury liner the France — taken out of a Greenwich estate — which happens to light up. With owner Amy Nevins’ background in fashion, antiques, clocks and high-end watches, and antique music boxes, rest assured you will find something you must have here at Juleigh’s. Designer jeans always $30! Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Consignment and late shopping evenings by appointment.

Trust and Integrity in the Rivertowns Number One Realtor

oulihan Lawrence was founded in 1888 with a commitment to trust and integrity, which has been our hallmark for more than 100 years. Today, the company is the No. 1 leader in market share and remains the area’s largest independently owned Realtor with 26 offices and 1,200 plus agents serving Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess counties and our newest location in Greenwich, Conn. We pride ourselves in having the resources and network that a national company would have — our own in-house marketing division, an award-winning relocation department, as well as our affiliation with Christie’s Great Estates. We still, however, have been able to retain the personal touch of the local hometown Realtor, because not only are our offices staffed

by residents of the towns they serve, but each office is supported by a Westchester headquarters that can be immediately responsive to our local changing market. The Irvington office, combined with the Ardsley office — staffed with committed professionals — continues to be the dominant market-share leader in total sales volume in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Put these two amazing groups together and you have an invincible and matchless team of 50 agents. We have all set the standards for excellence in customer service and will gladly accept the challenge to serve our neighbors during this ever-changing time. Please feel free to call upon any one of us and we will be vigilant in attending to your every need.
