General Amherst students walk out to protest education cuts By Sheila McBrayne
Hundreds of General Amherst High School students walked out of class on Thursday, April 4 to protest the Ontario government cuts to education. The local walkout was part of a province-wide demonstration at approximately 700 secondary schools, all coordinated to walk out at 1:15 p.m. on April 4. Grade 11 Amherst student Lily Monforton was pleasantly surprised by the support she received as an organizer of the walkout where approximately 300 students participated. “I was overwhelmed by the amount of students that participated due to the fact that we are such a small community... In my eyes this was a huge success. I was not prepared for such a large group. I told myself even if it was only 30 students out there, at least people were out there for the right

cause. I was honestly shocked and so surprised and ecstatic at the amount of students participating in this movement,” stated Monforton. “We want to make it known that these changes are not okay amongst us students; we may not have the right to vote, but we will stand up and speak up for what we believe in,” she stated. Premiere Doug Ford’s proposed changes in education would see and increased number of students (between 28 to 42 students) per classroom, mandatory e-learning/online courses, changes to OSAP funding, Autism support funding cuts, reduced support of the arts, and the loss of an estimated 5,000 teachers over the next five years. The walkout received much support in the form of honking by traffic on Sandwich Street street.
Many students created signs for the April 4th student walkout at General Amherst High School.

Sixteen-year-old Serina Carey of Amherstburg was honoured to be one of two ambassadors for the 37th Annual Windsor Essex Easter Seals campaign. One of her first duties, along with her co-ambassador 15-year-old Eric Donavan of Tilbury, was helping at the televised Easter Seals Telethon held on Sunday, March 31 at St. Clair College with celebrity host Kara Ro. “Our goal was $115,000 and we raised almost $195,000,” stated Serena. “Easter Seals is very helpful for all children with physical disabilities. They are so helpful,” said Serena. Money raised at the telethon, along with other fundraising activities throughout the year, are used to help families with financial assistance for equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and communication devices. It also provides the opportunity for a summer camp experience at one of the Easter Seals camps where children with physical disabilities have the chance to enjoy day camps, swimming and art classes. Although Serena has not attended a camp, she hopes to visit a couple of days this summer. “There’s a waiting list for families to receive help, so I’m very happy with the money we raised. It will definitely help,” said Serena. Serena has a rare genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which affects her mobility. She is currently waiting for three surgeries in the next couple of months. One of the surgeries will fuse her spine. “I joke that it’ll be the only healthy bone in my body,” said Serina. When Serena was 11 years old the Easter Seals purchased and installed a stairlift in her house so that she could sleep in her own bedroom. Before this, she slept in a hospital bed in her family’s living room. Serina is a student at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Secondary School in a program that allows her to do her school work at home, at her own pace. Serina aspires to be a neonatologist working with premature newborn babies. As the Windsor Essex Easter Seals ambassador, Serina will be attending various fundraising events and community events and festivals. SUBMITTED PHOTOS “There’s something going on almost every month Serina Carey, 2019 Windsor Essex Easter for the rest of the year,” said Serena. Seals Ambassador.

The project at the former Wesley United Church property is being allowed to proceed. However, it still remains unclear as to what is going in there. “All I know, it’s a commercial development,” said Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “What is going in there, anyone can speculate.” DiCarlo indicated that previous developments that were proposed for the 365 Sandwich St. S. site were larger and that a previous site owner did a lot of legwork as it relates to the studies and documentation required and the contractors – Rosati Group – told council the developers have “tight deadlines” and thanked administration for working with them. “When they know or are prepared to tell us, we’ll know,” said DiCarlo of the proposed tenants. Members of council did have concerns about whether or not they had enough information. Councillor Michael Prue made a motion to defer the matter and have a special meeting of council within two weeks but that motion failed. Prue said he wanted to know what he was voting for and that if something
were to go wrong, it would be council that receives the blame. “I’m not trying to delay this,” he said. DiCarlo said he hasn’t signed anything in relation to a development agreement that hasn’t already been signed off on by council and that they are proceeding like they have done in the past. DiCarlo was open to a special meeting, but council defeated Prue’s motion. Director of planning, development and legislative services Mark Galvin said they tried to bring as much information as possible to town council and that administration has been working with the developers every day. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche said he wasn’t in favour of any sort of deferrals, noting that four years ago saw developers say that Amherstburg was a tough place to do business.
“We’ve worked hard. We’re starting to see progress,” he said. “Let’s not take steps backwards.” DiCarlo noted that developers in the past have hit hurdles and “we’re trying to move this along as quickly as possible” without trying to circumvent anything. Councillor Peter Courtney asked about work that has been done already at the site, including the clearing of land. “We’re trying to exude transparency and accountability,” said Courtney. “My question is does excavating land require a permit?” CAO John Miceli said developers can move land and dig holes as much as they would like, but they can’t do any actual building without agreements. “You can move dirt on the land all you want,” he said.

Council to get report on “in-law suites”
Town council will soon be getting a report on “in-law suites.” Councillor Michael Prue made the request of administration during Monday night’s meeting. The report would study whether it is possible for homes in existing neighbourhoods to create such suites. Prue cited the fact that panelists at a recent affordable housing town hall meeting held by Essex MP Tracey Ramsey suggested such things as in-law suites in order to increase residential density. It was suggested at the town hall meeting that could help offer additional affordable housing options for people. The report is expected back at a future town council meeting.

Celebrating 100 years! By Pat Bailey
Things have changed drastically in Janice Cooper’s lifetime. The Registered Nurse has witnessed many of these changes in her 100 years. While industry, populations and technology have changed--one thing has remained steady in Janice’s life--the importance of family and friends. And on Sunday, they came from near and far to help the centenarian celebrate the tremendous milestone birthday. Like her daugher Joey Davidson, who lives in the Toronto area. Joey arranged a special party to mark the occasion at her mom’s home--Season’s Retirement Community. A graduate of the registered nursing home program at Hotel Dieu in 1940, Janice practiced nursing in Windsor and Detroit before becoming a public health nurse and relocating to Amherstburg. Janice said it was her first husband Philip Gibb that brought her to town. In fact, Joey said many of her own friends got to know her dad--but not is such a great way, when
they were sent to the viceprincipal’s office at General Amherst. But Joey said her dad passed away in 1981. Seven years later, Janice married Ronald Cooper, who has also since passed away. But Janice doesn’t dwell on her misfortune-instead, she has found a few hobbies to help fill the void. Like bridge. Despite her age, Janice still manages to play bridge two or three times a week--including weekly outings to Harrow to play. But on Sunday, she was smiling from ear-to-ear as about 50 well wishers hugged her and wished her a happy birthday. And before blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, Janice still found it hard to believe that she had actually reached the ripe old age of 100.. “I still can’t believe it,”said the guest of honour, “this is just wonderful.” Janice also received letters of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II and Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Julie Payette on this auspicious occasion.
Easter weekend events approved
The town has approved Easter weekend events for another year. That includes “rolling road closures” to accommodate the Good Friday walk April 19. The road closures are expected to start around 10:30 a.m. that morning and run similar to past years where the road is closed in areas where the procession is moving. The Easter Egg Hunt is April 20 at the Libro Centre. The free event has start times of 10 a.m. (0-2 years of age), 10:20 a.m. (3-5 years), 10:40 a.m. (6-8 years) and 11 a.m. (9-12 years).
Former Boblo “Friendship” final sail by Amherstburg The former Boblo boat “Friendship” sailed by Amherstburg for the last time Monday morning, April 8. The Friendship was originally, one of three ferries built for service to Peche Island, in 1968. Boblo is believed to have purchased ferry vessels, including Papoose III, Papoose IV, and Papoose V, for ferry service from Amherstburg in the early 1970’s with the Papoose V renamed to the current name “Friendship.” It was registered to the U.S., where Boblo still operated it out of Detroit for Private charters. After the amusement park closed, it was auctioned off again, this time to a restaurant in Wyandotte named “Portofino” where it did private charters and dinner cruises, where, in the fall, Bill Thomson purchased it. He is going to sail it up the Welland Canal, Trent Severn Waterway to Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, where he will operate it as “The Spirit of The Kawarthas for public tours and private events, such as weddings, etc. (RTT Photo by Ron Giofu)

Martin Breshamer Memorial Easter Seals Dinner April 17 Submitted by Terry Hall
The Rotary Club of Amherstburg will hold its annual Martin Breshamer Memorial Easter Seals Dinner next week. The annual fundraising dinner will be held at Columbus Community Hall, corner Richmond & Balaclava Streets,
Wednesday, April 17 from 5-7 p.m. The dinner funds opportunities for children and adults with physical disabilities. The Rotary Club has named the Dinner in honour of the late Martin Breshamer, who created it locally. Martin was a quiet pillar of the community through his many activities, all the while being the busy former plant manager for the local Seagrams Plant. For those with disabilities, Martin was a board member of Easter Seals, organized the Easter Seals walkathon and pasta dinner, ensured playgrounds The Rotary Club of Amherstburg will be hosting its annual Easter Seals fundrais- were handicap-acing dinner in memory of Martin Bresham- cessible, and was er (pictured). The dinner will be held at a board Member the Columbus Community Hall April 17 from 5-7 p.m. (Submitted photo) and former Chairman of the Rotary Children’s Rehabilitation Centre (now John McGivney Centre). For Amherstburg, he arranged the Seagram Concert Series for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) Christmas Concert, installed the Rotary Clock at the foot of Richmond Street, was a Board member of the Amherstburg Historic Sites Association and the Park House Museum, a fundraiser for the St. John the Baptist Church Restoration Fund, manager of the annual haunted house, and of course, President and Board Member of the local Rotary Club. For the area, he was a United Way Chairman where he exceeded the goal by 20 per cent, and assisted small business through the Essex Community Future Development Corporation. Having been born in The Netherlands where he survived World War II as a boy, Martin used to say “Canada has been good to me and in my retirement I can give my time to help others.” In view of his many accomplishments, it is understandable why Canada awarded him the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and Rotary presented him the Paul Harris Award.

Wendy’s project revived, moved forward by council By Ron Giofu
There is new life to the Wendy’s project that is proposed for 83 Sandwich St. S. The concept of having the fast food restaurant build in a portion of the parking lot at Sobeys appeared dead in the water last summer with traffic concerns in the area being a reason. The town LEFT: CAO John Miceli shows where the Wendy’s will be situated on the site at 83 Sandwich St. S. It is being pushed back from the road from its originally proposed location.
The Wendy’s project has been revived and is proceeding at the Sobeys site. Here is a look at what it will look like. (Special to the RTT)
noted at a public meeting last Tuesday evening that a new traffic study was done by Dillon Consulting last September and that a new agreement has been negotiated between all parties. “On July 27, 2018, the County of Essex approved Official Plan Amendment No. 8, which permitted the addition of a drive-through restaurant on the subject lands as a permitted use. The County’s decision was appealed and through mediation a settlement was reached between the Town, the site owners and the appellant,” stated director of planning, development and legislative services Mark Galvin in his report to council, noting the new zoning bylaw amendment being proposed is a result of the mediation efforts. Some residents at the public meeting did voice concerns as it related to traffic, with Lynn Sinasac noting the development will produce increased traffic in the area. Galvin noted that traffic factors were taken into account in the zoning bylaw amendment. Santino D’Alimonte, who lives near the proposed development, said there has been near head-on colli-
sions in the area but also had concerns over fencing and berming. Those concerns, he was told, will be addressed during the site plan process with CAO John Miceli noting that the proposed Wendy’s would be pushed back on the site into an area that was previously classified as a “no build zone.” The town’s own traf fic studies helped alleviate concerns, Miceli noted. “We have done our due diligence as it comes to this development,” said Miceli. “Without the independent study, we wouldn’t have been able to solve these issues.” Miceli added that “Sobeys wanted the development to proceed but wanted to ensure that the traffic was addressed.” Deputy Mayor Leo
Meloche said he had concerns last summer as the traffic study that was being used at that point was 17-years-old. He added he was glad to see the parties enter into a new agreement. Councillor Michael Prue noted that “economic development is good for the town” but did acknowledge the traffic issues that can occur in that area of Sandwich St. S. He also referenced the traffic light that is currently in front of General Amherst High School and that once the school relocates, the issue of whether the light is relocated will be looked at by town administration. The new Wendy’s is expected to generate about $25,000 in taxes annually with the $3 million development also said to be creating 50-60 new jobs.

World Autism Awareness Day marked in Amherstburg By Ron Giofu
World Autism Awareness Day was last week and Amherstburg was one of the municipalities that observed the occasion. A special flag raising ceremony was held last Tuesday afternoon at the Libro Centre, with the flag being raised by 16-year-old Hunter Bondy. Hunter is an autistic youth that attends St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School. Hunter is the son of Joe and Julie Bondy with Julie pointing out that it was announced to Hunter’s school that he had the honour of raising the flag in Amherstburg. Numerous town officials were on hand for the brief flagraising ceremony. “Everyone was really excited for him,” said Julie. “I feel it’s very important to do this for (World) Autism (Awareness) Day,” added Hunter. “It brings awareness.” Julie said that “awareness is key” because there are more and more diagnoses of autism. She said the current rate of diagnosis is one in 64. There are families that are severely impacted by “enormous cuts” that have resulted from changes at the provincial level, Julie noted. Julie Bondy is the vice president of Autism Ontario’s Windsor-Essex chapter. The province has recently announced there will be more consultations after the government faced backlash over changes to the way autism programs are funded. Hunter’s efforts in promoting autism awareness have been well recognized in the past, including being the 2014 national walk ambassador through Autism Speaks. The Bondys thanked the town of Amherstburg for allowing Hunter to raise the flag again this year. “We really appreciate it,” said Julie.
Hunter Bondy (centre) had the honour of raising the flag at the Libro Centre for World Autism Awareness Day. He is with his mother Julie and town CAO John Miceli. Miceli has an autistic son.

Western student wows judges at Get Skilled 2019 culinary competition By Pat Bailey
Tatum Spinks-Zalba is already heating things up in the kitchen. The 17-year-old Grade 12 Western Secondary School student has made her teachers proud with her recent silver medal standing at the Get Skilled 2019 competition held recently at St. Clair College. The competition, which gives high school students the opportunity to test their skills in a variety of areas, also gives them a chance to earn scholarships to help them in their post secondary pursuit of a career. For Tatum, her love of cooking and baking began as a youngster—in her family’s bakery in Sarnia, before relocating to the area. And, at the competition, Tatum wowed the judges. Hospitality teachers Cheryl Beaudoin and Mark Wakely were not afraid to tout the merits of their star student. Beaudoin said Tatum had to prepare chicken parmigiana with pasta- – like all her fellow cooks. While Tatum was dissatisfied with the texture of her pasta, the judges obviously were not. “It wasn’t as soft as I hoped it would be,” said Tatum of her home-made

Western students really get very little time because they prepare lunches for the school population. Hoping to eventually own her own restaurant one day, Wakeley said anyone would be lucky to dine on a dish prepared by Tatum. “She’s a superstar,” said Wakely. He said her silver medal is the best result for a Western student in several years. In addition to the medal, she was also awarded a $500 scholarship.

In addition to the entree, Tatum was also tasked to make carrot soup, chocolate mousse with fruit sauce and a cookie. Amherstburg native Adam Butcher is looking forward to his first of many EP releases. The 22-year-old musician will be officially releasing his first EP on April 20 at his launch party at RockStar Music Hall in Windsor. The five-song EP is titled “That’s Not You” and features all original music by Butcher. “I’ve always been involved in music somehow and have played at lots of
local spots,” said Butcher. “I’m pretty much playing somewhere every weekend,” he added. Butcher is a regular at his hometown Amherstburg Ribfest and will be playing all three days – July 5, 6 and 7 - this summer. Butcher describes his music as pop-country-folk. The La Janisse graduate enjoys writing as much as performing. “I’m already working on the next EP. I’ve already written songs for the next one which should be out in
about a year,” said Butcher. The video release party will be a public event open to all ages (those who are underage will need a legal guardian). Tickets are $10 and are available online and at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m. and CDs will be available for purchase once entered in the venue. There will be signed CD giveaways throughout the night. The night will consist of multiple opening acts with Adam Butcher as the headliner.

Nearly 1,000 gymnasts at championship By Pat Bailey
Warm up space was at a premium for nearly 1,000 young gymnasts competing at the Ontario Gymnastics Championships, hosted by the Rose City Gymnastics Club at the Libro Centre. (RTT Photo by Pat Bailey)
Many parents of elite athletes are forced to schedule their lives around the travel associated with their child’s sport of choice. But for some, it’s just a stopping point as their lives evolve. Like the MacLellans. The Oakville family was at the Libro Centre on the weekend, as son Graham, 10, competed in the gymnastics competition at the Libro Centre. While outside in the arena parking lot, their lives were packed up in a U-Haul ready to set out on a new path in their lives. As soon as Graham had performed his last routine, and awards were presented, the MacLellans were heading to their new home in Utah. It was a hectic time, but according to mom Lindsay, the timing of the Provincials allowed them the opportunity to allow Graham compete before heading to their new U.S. home.
The MacLellans were in good company, with nearly 1,000 gymnasts taking over the Libro Centre for the Men's Artistic Gymnastics Ontario Championships, as well as the 2019 Level 7-10 and National Ontario Championship Women's Artistics Gymnastics, hosted by the Rose City Gymnastics Club. (Continued on Page 17)
Great friendships are made amongst fellow teammates and competitors, like Henry Buck, 9, Ben Baker, 10, and Ty Cutler, 11, of Oakville.

Bulldogs start 2019 WECSSAA boys soccer season with a pair of wins By Ron Giofu
The General Amherst Bulldogs boys soccer team is off to a good start and hopeful for a good season. The 2019 WECSSAA season began last week with a pair of games at the Libro Centre. The season opened last Tuesday evening with a 2-1 win over the Kingsville Cavaliers with Josh DiCarlo and Donald Lachance scoring the goals for the Bulldogs. After that game, head
coach Gavin Blunt noted the Bulldogs didn’t have many practices heading into the season and the players still have to get used to each other on the field and learn about each other. “We’ve got a lot of new guys this season,” said Blunt. Assistant coach Spencer Petrozzi said it was “good to start the year with a win” and while they have a lot of work to do, he said he wasn’t going to pick apart a win.
“We worked hard and capitalized on our chances,” said Blunt. General Amherst returned to their home field Thursday afternoon and defeated the visiting Leamington Lions by a final score of 1-0. Jacob Howson had the only goal of the game for the Bulldogs. Blunt pointed out that General Amherst got to the WECSSAA finals last year and while there is strong competition in the league this season, he believes they can get to the title game again this season. “I don’t see why we can’t,” he said. The coaches usually set lofty goals and the players typically come through, Blunt added. The Bulldogs are on the road today (April 10) for a game against Tecumseh Vista Academy. That game starts at 4 p.m. General Amherst is at L’Essor next Monday for a 5:20 p.m. game before returning home April 17 to play the Belle River Nobles at 3:30 p.m.

MAWHORTER, Edward Edward E. Mawhorter went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 9, 2019. He was born on March 22, 1930, son of T.J. and Agnes Mawhorter at Wawaka, Indiana. He married Mary Gene North on July 23, 1950 at Cosperville Baptist Church. He left the farm and farming in 1954 as he felt God calling him to the ministry. Edward was a graduate of Wawaka High School, Cedarville University and Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary. He is survived by his wife Mary, their 4 children and spouses – Michael (Kathy), Ladner BC, Duane (Ramona), Brandon MS, Carol (Jim) Griffiths, Owosso MI, and Roger (Lori), Potterville MI, 11 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Sarah Early, Sun City AZ, several in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. Ed pastored churches in Owosso, MI, as well as in Toronto and Amherstburg, ON. He also served for five years in the home office of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada, and as Visitation Pastor in Harrow, ON. After retirement, Ed and Mary spent two years in Japan working at the Christian Academy of Japan. He lived a life of quiet integrity and faithful service, and maintained his sense of humor right to the end. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. He often said that the first thing he wanted to do when he got to heaven was kneel before Jesus. He got to do that with a clear mind and healthy body, so we rejoice for him in our sadness. There will be two memorial services, Tuesday, April 9 (11:00 a.m.) at Ladner Baptist Church in Ladner, BC, and Saturday, April 13 (also at 11:00, with visitation at 10:00), at Cosperville Baptist Church in Wawaka, Indiana. Donations can be made to Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.

Lady Gens optimistic after 1-1 start By Ron Giofu
The General Amherst Lady Gens girls soccer team is optimistic about the 2019 season after its first two games. The Lady Gens opened the season last week with a pair of games at the Libro Centre. The first game was a 4-3 loss to the visiting Kingsville Cavaliers last Tuesday afternoon in a game that saw General Amherst trail 3-0 but fight back to make a close game of it. Brittnee Meloche, Vanessa Pidutti and Julia Pidutti scored for the Lady Gens. The second game of the week was a 2-0 victory over the Leamington Lions last Thursday evening. Sam
Connell and Vanessa Pidutti scored in that game for the Lady Gens. General Amherst coach Eric Campbell noted he has returned to coaching after several seasons away and was impressed by the effort and competitive spirit the Lady Gens have shown thus far. “I’m very happy with my team,” said Campbell. “I think our team has great chemistry this year. I’m happy with the chemistry.” The Lady Gens are a mix of returning and new players with Campbell himself being new to the team. He said they had a lot of chances in the first game but couldn’t get the win but they were able to secure the victory

in the second game, with the first week showing very good promise for the future. Campbell believes General Amherst can be in the mix for a WECSSAA championship. “I don’t see why not,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of quality players with experience and a willingness to learn. As a coach, I have high expectations.” The Lady Gens now go on the road for a pair of games, with the team playing at Tecumseh Vista Academy today (April 10) before travelling to L’Essor Monday for a 4 p.m game. Their next home game is April 17 versus Belle River at 4:50 p.m.
