Lady Gens’ last triumph The General Amherst Lady Gens pose for a photo after winning the WECSSAA Group 1 senior girls volleyball championship. It was the volleyball program’s 12th WECSSAA championship in the last 16 seasons. Last Thursday night’s win over the Holy Names Knights was also the final match ever in the gym at the current high school, as they will be playing out of North Star High School starting in September and be known as the Wolves. Amherstburg Farmers Market returns for 2022 season By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Farmers Market (AFM) is open for the 2022 season. The market enters its 12th year of service overall and third at G.L. Heritage Brewery, located at 8728 Howard Ave. The market was originally located just down the road at the former Malden Community & Cultural Centre, a.k.a. “the Little White Church” and would move there to Toddy Jones Park. When they moved to G.L. Heritage Brewery in 2020, brewery co-owner Jen-DesjardinsGrondin says sales volumes have more than tripled, and the roster of diverse and eager vendors has grown to well over 60 full time and part time participants. “This is our soft opening,” said AFM manager Rita Casagrande. “Our grand opening is May 7.” The May 7 event will feature additional entertainment, kids activities, more vendors and a plant sale by the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society. Saturday. “For this time of year, it’s a good number,” said Casagrande. “A lot of farmers aren’t ready yet.” Additional craft vendors are also expected to come out in the coming weeks, she added. Casagrande said the AFM has enjoyed its partnership with G.L. Heritage Brewery thus far. “What’s not to like?” she said. “It’s accessible to everyone. It’s in the county. The Grondin family have been very welcoming to the market. It’s family-friendly and dog-friendly. It’s a great spot.” The furthest vendor the market has drawn has come from London, she added. “We’ve reached at least that far.” There is a mix of returning customers and new customers regularly, Casagrande stated, adding “we know our regulars.” Marianne Adams from Adams’ Garden of Eatin’ in Kingsville is a returning vendor, back for her second season.
