Town council has expressed its concern and support for the Miracle League of Amherstburg as the latter is seeking new leadership to keep it going. As some board members have moved on for various reasons, the Miracle League could not hold a spring season and town council members addressed the issue Monday night before anything more gets wiped out. Councillor Peter Courtney acknowledged the Miracle League is its own entity and not officially supported by the Town of Amherstburg, but wanted to brainstorm about ideas and things the town could do to keep it running. “We’re at risk of losing the Miracle League,” said Courtney. “Is there anything we can do to save this? Is there anything we haven’t been doing? If we lose this, it’s terrible.” Media reports started circulating last week and director of community and protective services Heidi Baillargeon said the current board is ready to “pass the torch” and are looking for others to volunteer on the board. Since the reports came out, community members started to step up. “We’ve had really good people willing to step up,” said Baillargeon. “We’re ready to work with them.” The Miracle League of Amherstburg started through the Rotary Club of Amherstburg and became its own separate organization over a dozen years ago. Amherstburg residents Chuck and Ann Bondy and their team volunteered their time to run it. Councillor Don McArthur said the Bondys did an incredible job but noted the board member roles are busy ones. He said council and community members need to share the messages that the league needs new people to help keep it going. “I think the big thing we can do is spread the word,” said McArthur.
