Bell, town celebrate completion of fibre internet project

By Ron Giofu Officials with Bell and the Town of Amherstburg were all smiles last Thursday morning as they celebrated the completion of the fibreoptic internet project.

All residents of Amherstburg will have access to internet speeds of up to 1.5-gigabits per second, noted Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, as part of a press conference in council chambers. DiCarlo said it was an issue he first wanted to pursue when he initially ran for mayor in 2014 and the partnership with Bell came three years later.

Calling it a “monumental announcement,” DiCarlo said having fibre lines around the town will support economic opportunities and “make people’s lives better in every part of Amherstburg.” He said that includes farms, industries and Boblo Island.

“It’s a very big day for Amherstburg,” he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for fast internet, the mayor stated.

“The pandemic changed the need from essential to critical,” he said.

DiCarlo added his thanks for Bell’s investment in Amherstburg, adding it “has put Amherstburg at the forefront of municipalities offering high speed communications everywhere.”

“Those considering future investment in Amherstburg now know this small town has positioned itself as a big player in the digital world,” he continued. “We would not be here today without (Bell) believing in Amherstburg.”

Believing “this is the kind of thing that will draw people to Amherstburg,” he added people will have choice when choosing what types of speeds they need and want. He said there are those who still contact him wanting it.

“All you have to do is contact Bell and get it,” he said.

DiCarlo added “the town’s partnership with Bell began with the agreement to connect all 8,000plus properties in Amherstburg. However, as our community has recently grown, connection capabilities now exceed the Town’s total properties. This is an astonishing accomplishment that I’ve been eager to

announce. It was all made possible with Bell’s significant investment in our community, for which I am immensely grateful.”

Darin Meek, senior manager, network provisioning with Bell, said the infrastructure that was installed will accommodate future increases in speed.

“I don’t know of any end in sight,” he said, regarding the fibre service. “Right now, it’s the fastest.”

Meek said Bell was pleased to work with the Town of Amherstburg, and agreed the need for fast internet was amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted there have been fibre networks installed in LaSalle, with work also being done in Windsor, Tecumseh and Lakeshore.

Future developments will have access to the service, he added, as Meek stated “we love partnerships.”

Bell announced in 2021 an investment of $1.7 billion in capital expenditures over two years to accelerate the rollout of its broadband fibre, 5G and rural networks and help drive Canada’s recovery from the COVID crisis. Meek said the project in Amherstburg fell into that, but did not have an exact number of what the company’s investment was in Amherstburg.

Amherst Traders’ Market gives center stage to local crafters and vendors

The Amherst Traders’ Market graced its local community last Saturday hosting 13 vendors all selling beautiful handmade goods.

Hosted last Saturday at the Unifor Local 1959 hall on Pickering Dr. by fellow community member, Joel Galipeau, the Amherst Trader’s Market had a successful return after a long wait during the pandemic.

Having been around for roughly two years prior to the pandemic, the Amherst Traders’ Market plans to host a market once a month moving forward. They also plan to continue holiday market events just as they have in the past.

The Amherst Traders’ Market hosts a wide variety of vendors, from Scentsy and Tupperware, to handmade items like wreaths and macrame, and branded companies like Arbonne and Colorstreet. Galipeau prioritizes in creating a colourful mix of vendors and always trying to give new businesses the spotlight, as well as recognizing their regular partners.

“We always try different vendors,” says Galipeau. “You never know what is going to appeal to the customers.”

The handmade items are always a wonderful addition to the market, according to Galipeau. They, and all the other vendors, bring to light Amherst Traders’ Market message of supporting small, local businesses.

The market also gives the customers a chance to come in and visit, and simply talk and get to know all the sellers.

“The success comes from meeting and connecting with people,” Galipeau says. “Seeing all the different things people make and sell just broadens your horizons and people are always impressed with what they see when they come in. We just want to spread the word and hope that people have a good time.”

Local principal recognized by her peers as “Principal of the Year”

A provincial honour has been bestowed upon a principal of an elementary school in Amherstburg.

Linda DiPasquale, principal of St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School, has been named as the “Principal of the Year” by the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario (CPCO) and will be honoured at a banquet in Toronto April 22. She was notified of the award recently by the CPCO, with one of the reasons behind her receiving the award being her tireless work ethic.

“I’m so humbled and so honoured by it,” she said of the award. “We’re so used to doing what we do – serving others. It’s humbling to be the centre of attention.”

DiPasquale said she learned she was nominated by the Windsor-Essex County branch of the CPCO. The local organization will also pay tribute to DiPasquale at its AGM in May. “I’m honoured to represent an amazing group of colleagues,” she said.

DiPasquale has been the principal of St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School for over seven years and has been in administration with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board for 13 years. She spent the first 22 years of her 35-year career as a teacher. She says she tries to lead by example.

“You have to be able to show your team you are willing to do anything you are wanting them to do,” she said. “I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get right in there.”

Being at the school for over seven years has enabled DiPasquale to learn

the names of the 600 students as well as their strengths and weaknesses. She also has gotten to know the parents, school community and parish family over the years.

St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School has a great staff, she added.

“We have a wonderful relationship based on mutual respect,” said DiPasquale.

While she added she sets the bar high, DiPasquale added “a good leader is only as good as the team following them.”

DiPasquale also highlighted the support of parent council and the “wonderful connection with parents.”

Senior administration with the WindsorEssex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) have also been great to work with, she said.

However, it was the support of her family she was grateful for most of all, as she said they have shown “unwavering love and support.”

The work day for DiPasquale often starts at 7-7:30 a.m. and ends between 6:30-7 p.m.

“Education is not a 9-5 job,” said DiPasquale. “You have to live it and breathe it. You are always thinking about it. You are always on call.”

“I recalled reading in the nomination about my tireless work ethic," she continued. "That is something I inherited naturally and owe all to my amazing immigrant parents who modelled for me and my siblings the value of hard work, pride in a job well done, and a selfless commitment to serving others and leading by example."

News of the award caught her off guard, and led to a high volume of

well-wishes, cards, e-mails and flowers from colleagues, parents and students both past and present. She particularly finds the words “well deserved” to be special, as that means to her that she has been dedicated to her profession.

“I never felt I did any more than anyone else,” said DiPasquale, “or that I deserved it more than anyone else.”

DiPasquale said she is thinking of retiring but it won’t be an easy decision, as her job is one that she loves. St. Joseph is her tenth school over her 35-year career, with previous stops being St. Anthony in Harrow, St. John de Brebeuf, St. Paul, Holy Cross, Holy Name Catholic Elementary School, St. William, St. Gregory, St. Pius and Stella Maris.

“It’s really been an honour and a blessing,” she said.

News of the award was circulated by

the WECDSB, with director of education Emelda Byrne stating in a post on the board’s website: “Linda has always had high expectations for herself and the people around her but she also strives to create a warm, loving and caring atmosphere in the classrooms and the schools where she has worked. During her tenure with our Catholic school board she has touched the lives of countless students and their families who are better just for having known her.”

Board Chair Fulvio Valentinis added: “Linda is a shining example of everything you could hope for in a Catholic school administrator. She is a humble, faithfilled servant leader who wants nothing but the best for all of those around her.

We are extremely grateful for her years of service and for setting the gold standard for other administrators to follow.”

Outgoing ACOC president says farewell at organization’s AGM

Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce president Nika Laurin went over the accomplishments that occurred over the past year, including what they did during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There has been a change at the top of the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce (ACOC).

The ACOC held its annual general meeting (AGM) virtually recently where the outgoing president said farewell and the organization welcomed a new president.

In her final meeting as president, Nika Laurin read a letter in which she said she has “mixed emotions” about leaving after four years. She noted she has begun a new job with CIBC and will be taking on a regional role, thus was leaving the board.

Laurin said she was excited about a return to “a new

normal” after two years of COVID-19 public health restrictions “and that she was also anticipating “great things in the works for Amherstburg.”

It was a tough two years, but Laurin indicated the ACOC was able to make some progress.

“I’m very proud of what we accomplished despite the curveballs COVID has tossed us,” she said.

The ACOC and Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) teamed up to give away free rapid antigen tests in partnership with the Ontario government and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. She said over 11,000 kits were distributed in 2021.

Don’t tear down perfectly sound buildings Whatever option Council decides on the remaining 15 acres of Centennial Park should be viewed as a win for Amherstburg. There are conditions, however, for my full support.

Russell Renaud Hill must be left untouched. The legacy of Mr. Renaud means too much for our community. A massive amount of tax dollars went into

the former Amherstburg Community Services building. Sell it rather than tear it down and gain assessment for the town taxes. A massive amount of tax dollars went into the Centennial Park arena , from repairs, upgrades, and the money spent to twin it. I’ve never heard complaints about the Libro Centre, but that facility hemorrhages money.

Twinning the arena would have saved taxpayers millions and our H. Murray Smith Centennial Park would have remained our jewel. Again, a massive amount of tax dollars lost when the arena was torn down.

The beautiful Len Duby Public Utilities Building torn down. We have a bad habit in this town to demolish

expensive and perfectly sound buildings.

I support the assisted seniors development. It fits perfectly across from the community hub, but not at the cost of tearing down the existing building. Just my thoughts.

Reader comments on statements from Ontario Party candidate

I see that as a newbie, Mr. Causarano has some lofty platform ideas. He says he and his party stand for “truth and transparency,” says he believes he can provide “a fresh perspective” with his “problem solving abilities” and “teamwork approach”. He’s ”committed to health and wellness” and “understands current clean water, flooding concerns and the housing crisis.”

All very good talking points and admirable ideals. But then he goes off the rails and loses me. He claims he realizes his party’s chances of forming government is “low.”

So, what does that then mean for all these lofty ideals.

Well in his and his party’s opinion they’ll settle on being disruptors. “Our objective is to displace and disrupt government.” Read; we’ll be a bunch of malcontents and troublemakers determined in allowing nothing constructive to get done and offering no real solutions to any of the problems. And “displace”? History has shown that dictators displace.

The Republican party of the U.S. has several of these types of “disruptors” taking up space and contributing

nothing in return for their hefty salaries.

Do we really need disruptors in our provincial or federal halls of government, or should we elect candidates who we feel will be problem solvers?

Please think about that before going to the polls. Let’s educate ourselves as to what we truly want our leaders to represent. Do we want leaders that lead, or “disrupt”?

Town council should do its homework before it decides on notice of motion Today an abundance of contradicting information and reactionary responses exist. Add to the mix technologies where diverse opinions can easily be shared.

I don’t know if Amherst is guilty of the accusations, but neither do you.

We can only form opinions on available evidence. A Google search is the extent of most research. To disparage the namesake of a Town, or a school, I want to think our leadership would raise the standard of evidence. Our citizens roots go back centuries and the

namesake may be part of their identity.

In a Henderson column in the Windsor Star from 2017, input from a Ronald J. Dale, a respected historian, published author and a reputed expert in the timeframe that Amherst lived, calls into question the validity of the allegations. Changes to name or definition should include a review of the points raised in this column.

I provided this to the Town’s leadership, getting only a couple of responses. Our mayor told me that the naming of the school was in the purview of the board and there was no current process to change the name of the Town. I would like, no expect, our leadership to determine what the most likely scenario could be and if necessary, defend the namesake of our Town and our old high school.

Regarding Ms. Simone’s Notice of Motion, a lack of a valid understanding of our past, eliminates our ability to measure our progress. Should we be selective to negative decisions made by those that came before us? Our nation has a troubled and at times, a shameful past with our indigenous

neighbours. Why not include other discriminatory policies and hold those authors accountable?

In 1969, Pierre Trudeau’s government issued “Indigenous Foundations.”

This White Paper proposed abolishing all legal documents, the Indian Act and all treaties within Canada. Eugene Whelan was part of that government.

Should we remove plaques and street signs?

Within current reconciliation attempts, wouldn’t more current and local involvement be more relevant than something that may not even have occurred, 250 years ago?

Park House Museum to receive $15,000 community grant from the town

It is a case of better late than never for the Park House Museum.

While this year’s request for a community grant from the Town of Amherstburg came after the 2022 budget had been finalized, they still had their community grant request approved and then some. The Amherstburg Historic Sites Association, the board the governs the Park House Museum, asked for $8,500 but ended up with $15,000 when all was said and done.

Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche moved the original recommendation calling for $8,500 but Councillor Don McArthur made an amendment asking the museum receive more than that.

“I want to give them more than that,” said McArthur.

“The Park House is a very vital community organization. There’s a cry for help in here.”

Due to the turnover in staffing at town hall, the museum’s request wasn’t presented to town council “the way it should have been,” McArthur stated.

A report from director of legislative services/clerk Valerie Critchley noted the Park House’s original request was not included in the recommended grants for the operating budget but “this oversight was the result of the turnover of municipal staff in the fall of 2021 and was in no way the fault of the Amherstburg Historic Sites Association. Had the application not been overlooked, the requested amount of $8,500 would have been recommended by administration for approval by council just as all other recurring grant requests were.”

The Park House Museum returned with their $8,500 grant request but McArthur noted their request pointed out the museum needed funding due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and that the Park House was unable to reinstate curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak back to full-time hours which the museum stated “subsequently affects our ability to generate additional revenue.”

The Park House’s request added they “understand that the town may be in a similar situation, we decided to maintain our request as in previous years. Should council feel that they are able to exceed our grant request, it would be much welcomed and used to generate revenue on our road to recovery.”

McArthur said the Park House Museum does a lot of fundraising on its own and they “do so much good for the town” through social media promotion. Their “Music off the Back Porch” event is a fundraiser for the museum, but McArthur said it also draws people to the downtown core. He also noted the Park House’s Boblo exhibit in 2022 and that the museum is planning an Indigenous history exhibit that will run from June-December.

“They are asking for $8,500. I think that we should give them more,” said McArthur, adding he “would be comfortable doubling it.”

Meloche said he didn’t have a problem with the request but said the Park House should have come to council if they wanted more than $8,500.

“I’m not going to argue they have issues and the pandemic has affected many,” said Meloche.

“We will continue to support this program as long as it is offered by the government and there is local demand,” she said. “With the elimination of all public health measures as of March 21, the availability of rapid test kits will help individuals self-diagnose and act accordingly.”

Virtual meetings and events, such as the online Business Excellence Awards, were held but Laurin said they look forward to a “pragmatic return” to conducting in-person business. She added the ACOC partnered with chambers in Leamington and Windsor-Essex on a “Shop Local” campaign, adding the ACOC also supports Open Air Weekends. Member discount programs were also enhanced over the past year, she said.

There was also a change at the general manager’s position. With Jaclyn DiPasquale changing careers, they brought in Anne Creary, who had over 30 years experience with Enbridge Gas prior to retirement, most recently as director of public affairs, communications and customer ombudsman.

“Her experience has been a great asset,” said Laurin.

Laurin thanked the board and ACOC as a whole for allowing her to serve as president.

“It has truly been a pleasure and privilege to work with and learn from so many talented people,” she said.

“You really have stepped up especially over the last two crazy years,” said ACOC treasurer Chris Gibb. “It’s been nuts and we’ll certainly miss talking to you every month.”

Gibb will stay on as treasurer with Dan Gemus becoming the new ACOC president. Derek Roy becomes vice president and Sarah Seguin will remain as secretary. Directors for the new term will include Tallie Wright, Dwayne Mackey, Diana Giorgi and Mariah Ferris.

The deputy mayor did support an amendment but wanted it no more than $15,000. He said the Park House Museum should come up with a new business plan in the future.

CAO Peter Simmons said “council passes tight and prudent budgets every year. Should council land on a number, we’d find a way to pull the additional resources and apply them accordingly.” Councillor Michael Prue wanted to know from “which pot of money is this coming from” and that would cement his vote, with Simmons stating a year-end report and first quarter report is due in June and that will identify where the money is coming from.

Councillor Peter Courtney said he would support giving the Park House Museum more but would have rather have seen a request for more before they were given more. He asked if it was a one-time grant to get them kickstarted towards resuming normal operations.

“I think that was their intent,” said Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “As they say in the report, it’s gotten a bit dire to the point where they haven’t been able to fulfill the full-time hours of their curator. Having gone there for a number of events, I can tell you they do quite a bit with what little money they have and they provide a lot of service for the town, including a venue for Music off the Back Porch.”

DiCarlo added when he saw they couldn’t keep the curator employed full-time, “that really got to me.”

“It’s not a huge amount of money difference,” he added. “I do appreciate that’s not what they asked for but I think this is one of those opportunities that on a one-time basis, that we can just let them know we do appreciate the service they provide to Amherstburg.”

Councillor Patricia Simone said the Park House Museum is part of the “historical mile” that is in Amherstburg.

“I think it’s important we support them as much as possible for all that they do for our community,” said Simone.

Local schools raise over $2,700 for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine

A pair of local schools have assisted in the humanitarian efforts for Ukraine.

Both General Amherst High School and Anderdon Public School held “hat day” fundraisers to raise money for people in Ukraine. General Amherst High School had their “hat day” late last month and raised over $1,300 as of the end of that day. Student parliament prime minister Emily Richard said she was given the idea by a teacher at Anderdon Public School.

“It started with Anderdon Public School. They did a similar fundraiser before March Break,” Richard explained. “Mrs. (Sonia) Scott did it and reached out to us. Having another school doing it adds to the total and helps other people.”

Anderdon raised $1,447.80 at their event, said Richard. All proceeds will be turned over to the Red Cross.

Students were allowed to wear a hat to school in exchange for at least a $2 donation, Richard said, though some students decided to donate more.

“Some students decided not to wear a hat but they wanted to donate because they thought it was an important campaign,” she added.

Some students, particularly in the younger grades, were not as aware of the situation in Ukraine but were brought up to speed by the staff.

“I thought the teachers did a great job explaining to their students what is happening in Ukraine and what

the money is going towards,” said Richard. “I think the students are very concerned over what is going on in Ukraine.”

Student parliament hasn’t been able to hold the same number of events and fundraisers this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Richard added, but they are still doing their best to make it as good of a year

as possible.

“We want to make sure we are entering the best world we can so we are going to try and make it as good as we can,” she stated.

Other events and fundraisers are being planned for the final months of the 2021-22 school year, Richard pointed out.

Mission to re-open soon to in-person eating, date to be finalized

Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission president Tim McAllister and his volunteers have been busy trying to get the mission ready for in-person meals. They are still serving lunches at the door at 12 noon as they get the building organized. No date has been finalized to re-open the building to the public.

The Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission continues to serve meals at the front door, but work is underway to restore in-person dining.

Mission president Tim McAllister said they have been getting numerous requests on when people can come inside to eat, and while the board recently voted to go that route, work has to be done to restore that service. “(The board) discussed it and voted to open it,” said McAllister. “The question is how and when?

That’s something we are still working out.”

The mission has restricted public access indoors for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but still stayed in operation by serving those who came to the front door at noon five days per week.

With only volunteers allowed inside, donations accumulated and were sorted around the interior of the building.

“Stuff was everywhere,” McAllister said.

Volunteers have been working to sort the goods by month and year according to expiry date, put the food in boxes and move them into storage. When that is completed in the coming weeks, the mission can once again allow people inside.

“Some places have opened already but we are still feeding people at the door,” said McAllister. “We have to organize and we don’t have a (re-opening) date yet. People are already excited. Some of the clientele can’t wait.”

McAllister said “it’s a lot of work” to restore the operations the way they were before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the volunteers have made sure people were fed the whole time.

“The only thing lacking is the fellowship,” he said.

The mission serves roughly 80 take-out meals per day, with McAllister saying some are Ukrainian people that have come to Canada to get away from the fighting.

“They come and stay at people’s houses,” he said.

The mission is also preparing food for people who are quarantining because of the virus.

“Some people have the virus and can’t leave the house,” he said. “We still have that going on too.

Some families call and need help. When they call, I don’t say no. I see how I can help them.”

The mission reduced services slightly during the pandemic, going from six days per week to five days per week. That was due to a number of volunteers not coming out during the pandemic which reduced the number of people able to work. McAllister had to cook on a regular basis and that reduced the amount of time he had for other duties, he noted.

There have been some who have questioned how the mission has been able to operate during the pandemic, but McAllister said the answer is simple – community support.

“We’re still here because the community supports us,” he said.

“We haven’t had any

fundraisers and we’re still here. That should tell you people in the community are behind us to help us through.”

Fundraisers are in the planning stages of returning this year, with McAllister stating his son Winston has started work to plan the golf tournament.

“You can see the light coming at the end of the tunnel,” said McAllister.

St. Clair College Seeks Community Representatives for the Board of Governors St. Clair College is seeking applications for the Board of Governors, for a three-year term beginning on September 1, 2022. The College Board is comprised of 17 members, including 12 appointed from the community, the College President and an additional four members who are elected from the College’s student, faculty, support and administrative groups.

Responsibilities include policy setting and contributing to the College Strategic Directions. Board members are required to attend one regular Board meeting per month (normally scheduled on the fourth Tuesday of the month) between September and June, with meetings beginning at 5:30 p.m. Additional meetings are scheduled on an as needed basis.

NDP leader touts parties mental health proposal in Amherstburg visit

By Ron Giofu The leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) was in Amherstburg with the universal mental health care plan she announced top of mind.

Andrea Horwath also spoke with owners and managers of small businesses in Amherstburg, just hours after she also addressed the mental health proposal at a stop in Windsor. She was joined on her trip to Amherstburg by Essex candidate Ron LeClair, current Essex MPP Taras Natyshak, Windsor-Tecumseh candidate Gemma Grey-Hall, Councillor Michael Prue among others, and visited Happier Camper and the River Bookshop.

Horwath said LeClair was taking her around “showing me what he loves in his riding.”

“It feels nice to be here,” she said.

Horwath announced the NDP’s universal mental health plan Sunday that will cover counselling and therapy under OHIP, and expand publicly funded mental health services so they’re more accessible, and waits are shorter. She said that will reduce wait times for both children and adults, something that is an issue for people in Windsor-Essex County.

electric vehicle battery plant that both the federal and provincial government are supporting, Horwath said she and the NDP were pleased to hear it.

“I think it’s great news all around,” she said of the announcement.

Horwath said there needs to be an increase in electric vehicles and said her party would bring back electric vehicle credits, help municipalities and individuals acquire the charging infrastructure they would need and make buying electric vehicles something that everyone can afford.

“We need people to be able to buy electric cars,” said Horwath. “Everyone has to have access to do the right thing and go electric.”

LeClair said having Horwath in the riding shows the importance of the area and said not only have mental health services been “broken,” but the entire system has been “broken for 15 years or more.”

“We’re here and coming to fix things that need to be fixed,” he said.

New Democrats also want to assist small businesses as the province emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, LeClair added, as that is why they were at two small businesses chatting with managers and owners to see what they needed.

cess service while children also face long waiting lists, something she said “is nothing short of cruel.”

“People can’t get the mental health and supports they need,” she said. “The mental health system has been broken for a long time.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the issue even more to the forefront, Horwath believes.

At least one in four Ontarians sought mental health or addictions help during the pandemic.

“COVID has only deepened the struggles people are facing,” said Horwath. “Some kids are struggling with personality changes and anxiety since the school shut downs. So many of us are coping with grief, loss, financial stress and worry for the health of our loved ones. No one should suffer with nowhere to turn. No one should feel like help is out of reach because they can’t afford it.”

Horwath said some services are covered by OHIP if delivered through a Family Health Team, but there are Ontarians who have to go on waiting lists that are “really, really long.”

Horwath said she also plans to make further commitments to address the opioid and overdose epidemic. The NDP’s Universal Mental Health plan is estimated to cost $1.15 billion when fully implemented.

Parks committee given update on two kilometre trail coming to Libro Centre

The town’s parks and recreation advisory committee has received an update on the two-kilometre trail that is in the planning stages for the Libro Centre.

At its meeting last Wednesday night, the committee was told about the trail and the latest plans for it, with the trail going around the entire edge of the property including a loop on the south end that will surround the dog park, when the latter is also constructed.

Sr. Lady Gens enter WECSSAA Group 1 volleyball playoffs with 6-0 record

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens entered the 2022 WECSSAA Group 1 senior girls volleyball playoffs with a 6-0 record, but had another of their streaks snapped last week.

The Lady Gens hosted Sandwich last night, in a game played after this issue of the River Town Times went to press, but also concluded the regular season against the Sabres last Tuesday night.

General Amherst downed Sandwich 25-19, 25-22 and 23-25 in the regular season finale, however, the loss in the third set was the first time all season the Lady Gens had lost a set.

The teams were back-and-forth in the first set before the Lady Gens pulled away. The Lady Gens had to fight back to win the second set but it was Sandwich that was able to get the victory in the third set, though the match result was known by that point.

The Lady Gens won 17 of 18 sets in the regular season, but head coach Jeff Miller is hoping for continued improvement.

“We've had moments where we've played good volleyball but we are not consistent enough,” he

said after the regular season win. “They've got to understand how to play. A lot of times they are waiting for someone to do things for them instead of being aggressive and taking control.”

Miller said he is wanting to see players move into leadership roles on the court and become passing leaders, blocking leaders and leaders in other aspects of the sport.

“We need someone to step up and take command of things,” he said after the March 29 win. “We've got lots of stuff to work on.”

While happy to win all six of their matches, the mental aspect of the game needs to be honed, he believed. There are good athletes that are capable of playing well at the senior level, he stated.

“It's all going to be the mental aspect,” said Miller.

Going into last night's WECSSAA semi-final match, Miller believed it wasn't going to be easy. He said any of the top five teams are capable of winning in the playoffs.

“We can all beat each other,” said Miller. “If we have a bad game, any of these teams can beat us.”

The WECSSAA finals will be Thursday evening, and if General Amherst wins the semi-final match, the finals will be on their home court.

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens junior girls volleyball team advanced in the WECSSAA Group 1 playoffs after a win last week.

The Lady Gens hosted the Holy Names Knights in a quarterfinal playoff match played in the General Amherst gymnasium last Thursday evening. The Lady Gens didn't get off to a good start, losing the first set 25-16, but rebounded nicely and swept the next three by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20. The match was tight throughout most of it with the two teams battling for points throughout.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start but they got right back into the game,” said General Amherst head coach Jeff Miller.

General Amherst and Holy Names were two evenly matched teams, Miller added, and that it showed in the results.

“We play similar styles hence all the long rallies,”

said Miller.

Miller noted three junior-aged players are on the senior girls team at General Amherst, but that, in turn, helped the development of some of the junior players.

“It opens more opportunities for the junior kids,” said Miller. “For us to go 5-2 in this league (during the regular season) and win the quarterfinal, it's a good accomplishment for us.”

General Amherst won 14 sets they played this year and lost seven. They were one of only two “AA” sized schools to play in Group 1, the other being Riverside.

The rest of the group were larger schools at the “AAA” and “AAAA” level.

The junior Lady Gens were scheduled to play in LaSalle at Sandwich Secondary School in the WECSSAA Group 1 semi-final last night. Regardless of that result, Miller was pleased with how the junior girls team performed this year.

“They had a good year. They did well,” he said.

“They exceeded my expectations. I'm happy with how they did.”

Location of tennis courts debated by parks and rec advisory committee

The tennis courts at Malden Centre Park continue to be in rough shape but one member of the parks and recreation advisory committee voiced concern over losing them entirely.

The committee met virtually last Wednesday night and heard from manager of parks and naturalized areas Annette Zahaluk that the courts in Malden are continuing to deteriorate.

“It’s a very, very old tennis court area,” she said. “Some money was put into it to buy us some more time on it. The original drainage underneath that infrastructure has deteriorated as well and with the high water table that has increased, it has increased the deterioration.”

A company was called in yearly to patch holes, fix lines and undertake other repairs but the condition of the courts continues to get worse, she stated.

“It’s starting to crumble now,” said Zahaluk.

A total of $25,000 was asked for in the 2021 capital budget and that was just “going to put a band-aid on it for another year or so.” She said the parks master plan recommended tennis courts go in at H. Murray Smith Centennial Park or at the Libro Centre and asked the committee for comments on that idea.

New courts with a proper base and fencing would cost approximately $250,000 per court, Zahaluk estimated.

“We all know it’s not a cheap endeavor,” she added.

The tennis courts in Anderdon Park are “in fairly decent shape,” Zahaluk continued, and the courts at Co-An Park in McGregor can also accommodate players until a final decision is made on where courts are going to go.

“The Malden courts are at the point where they need to be taken out of circulation and use,” said Zahaluk.

asked about public consultation and Zahaluk mentioned that tennis courts were in the possible re-design of Centennial Park.

“Administration feels that would be a good spot because the school could use it for their curriculum,” said Zahaluk, referring to North Star High School. “It is central to town which is another thing the parks master plan asked for. At the Libro (Centre), the parks master plan also says to bring amenities there so that everything is in one spot. We just feel that those two spots would suffice.”

Zahaluk said they are looking to replace the courts at Malden Centre Park at this stage and that the recommendation would be Centennial Park as that was the option shown to the public at the recent open house. She said the aim is to use H. Murray Smith Centennial Park as more of a “sports park” with Jack Purdie Park to be more of a family-themed park.

Committee member Wes Ewer said he lives near Malden Centre Park and said that the playground equipment was removed “with no intent of replacing it in the immediate future” and now the tennis courts could be moved away from it.

He said fencing was also put up in the park and that impacted men’s and co-ed slo-pitch with the hope of attracting other tournaments.

“We just took out every amenity that siblings of kids in tournaments would be able to use,” said Ewer. “We’ve decimated this park with no intention of putting anything back there. As someone who is going to live in Malden for the next 20 years, it’s disheartening for sure.”

Zahaluk clarified that tennis courts could still go at Malden Centre Park, but would have to “be re-done from the ground up” if the public wants them to stay in Malden. She said there is a health and safety issue with the courts at Malden. Another survey would likely have to be done to see if courts are preferred at Malden.

The condition of the tennis courts as well as other amenities at Malden Centre Park were up for discussion at the recent parks and recreation advisory committee meeting.

Policy and committee coordinator Kevin Fox noted an additional $25,000 had been added to a pre-approved $75,000 that was set aside for repairs, as the latter was deemed insufficient by administration to carry out repairs at the Malden courts. He added as park redevelopment is planned in the core of Amherstburg and the parks master plan speaks to lost amenities in central Amherstburg, the funds deemed insufficient in Malden would be redirected to meet core services. Fox added that comments from the committee are sought to see if they agree with that.

Curson-Prue said Ewer’s thoughts were important, as services were being moved out of an area of town. She wondered what the plan is for Malden Centre Park going forward. Zahaluk said they would maintain baseball at that park, but it is also an option for the tennis courts to be remediated there.

If Malden was not included in a survey, there is no information from people, added Curson-Prue. Zahaluk said another survey could measure the appetite of putting tennis courts at H. Murray Smith Centennial Park or keep them in Malden.

“The fact is the town doesn’t have the money to put tennis courts everywhere,” said Councillor Don McArthur.

McArthur added that “we’re talking about replacing amenities in Centennial Park. Baseball diamonds don’t fit there.

Tennis courts do, basketball courts do.

That right there is an argument for shifting them there. Malden has baseball diamonds. I’m not making the decision now, just sort of thinking out loud. Nothing else really works at Centennial.” He said the skateboard park is going to the Libro Centre and that leaves tennis courts and basketball courts.

Curson-Prue suggested future surveys regarding tennis courts and another for what else can occur in Malden, but Ewer said his issue is more about having a plan for Malden Centre Park.

“There’s a good future for that park in terms of having tournaments for younger kids,” Ewer said, “but then we have no plan. My thing is I’m almost surveyed out. We just need something. We need to replace some of the amenities.”

Ewer said he loves surveys and feedback but questioned how many times that similar questions can be asked. CursonPrue said the same thing doesn’t have to be in every park, but the questions are how to divide services and where to put them.

The purpose of this meeting is to consider a proposed amendment to the Town of Amherstburg Official Plan and Zoning By-law 1999-52.

This Official Plan and Rezoning, if approved, will amend the existing official plan designation on this property from an “Institutional” to a “Medium Density Residential” designation, and will change the zoning from an “Institutional” zone to a new site-specific Residential Multiple Second Density (RM2) zone. This will allow an existing institutional building to be converted and used for 16 new residential condominium style dwelling units, and will permit a new 4 storey 34-unit residential condominium style apartment building to be built. Site-specific lot and building regulations will be incorporated at this location, in accordance with a final site plan to be approved by Council.
