Santa arrives in the snow!

The Windsor Parade Corporation presented the 2021 Amherstburg Santa Claus Parade last Saturday night. The snow was flying but over 50 floats entertained the thousands that lined the streets. Audit being requested by town councillor

An Amherstburg town councillor has requested audit reviews of financial practices within the town.

Councillor Peter Courtney put forth a notice of motion at town council’s most recent meeting to request KPMG to review several items including the town’s internal controls, operating budget variances that have occurred for the fiscal years between 2018-21 and capital projects completed and/or underway in that same time period with a project value

greater than $300,000, including the Amherstburg Community Hub. The notice of motion also requests that town council authorize interim CAO Tony Haddad to sign all the necessary documents required to undertake the noted work, and that KPMG’s findings be reported to council in accordance with the Municipal Act. The cost would be charged to the professional services account in the CAO’s office, should the motion be approved.

Town council OK’s $300,000 reserve transfer to cover emergency storm sewer repairs

Amherstburg town council has approved an expenditure not to exceed $300,000 to take care of emergency storm sewer repairs.

The unbudgeted expenditure will be covered through a transfer of funds from the general reserves and will fund the replacement of the outlet portion of the Duff Ave. storm sewer outfall. According to a report from manager of roads and fleet Eric Chamberlain, infrastructure services was advised of a large sinkhole on the banks of the Detroit River on the west side of Sandwich St. North near Duff Ave. “It should be noted that the sinkhole was located on private property owned by the Jones Realty Inc., the property adjacent to this property and next to the river is owned by the Essex Region Conservation Authority,” Chamberlain wrote in his report.

Chamberlain added he was in contact with the Jones Group Oct. 28 to assist in an exploratory excavation of the sinkhole to investigate the cause of the failure. The area was excavated by a contractor and reported Nov. 2 that a brick storm sewer had failed and caused the sinkhole to form.

“The storm sewer starts at the river’s edge and travels easterly, ending in a manhole in the easterly northbound lane of Sandwich St. North. The total length of the storm sewer is approximately 50 metres (150‘),” Chamberlain stated. “The sewer is 1.22 metres (48”) in diameter and 8m+ (25’) in depth. Unfortunately, the Town does not have any engineering plans or information on this outlet.”

Councillor Patricia Simone wanted to know why there is no information on that outlet. Chamberlain said based on the town’s records, he was not able to find anything. While there are plans for a storm sewer on Duff Ave., there are nothing that go from Fraserville to the river.

Simone wanted to know if this was a one-off or whether records could be gathered for the future. Chamberlain said sewers are part of the town’s GIS mapping system and notes have been made on the current issue.

Chamberlain added in his report: “There are numerous services and utilities under Sandwich Street North that could be impacted by the further failure of the brick sewer. Most importantly, there is a 300mm (12”) water main and sanitary sewer in close proximity to the sinkhole and failure. Inaction would cause the sinkhole to enlarge further, potentially compromising the water main and sanitary sewer as well as further damaging the private property and creating a very dangerous hazard.”

outlet, he added, with the plan being to replace the storm sewer from the failure point westerly to the Detroit River with concrete pipe. The section from the failure easterly to the manhole on the Sandwich St. North would be relined utilizing trenchless technology, he stated.

“The Duff Ave. storm outlet provides drainage to the Fraserville subdivision as well as road water from Sandwich St. North. Further failure could cause flooding concerns within the watershed area and impact numerous utilities and services near the failure point,” Chamberlain stated in his report.

Chamberlain noted the general reserve fund had a balance of $4.6 million and the town is anticipating an overall budget surplus at year’s end.

“Public works administration intends to bring forward a budget request as part of the 2022 budget to return during the summer of 2022 and line the old brick sewer under Sandwich St. North,” he added.

McGregor Columbian Club gives thanks to OTF and its volunteers

The McGregor Columbian Club is thanking its volunteers as well as the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for being able to stay open.

A volunteer recognition event was held last Friday night at the Walker Road hall, which included a celebration of the $134,700 in OTF funding the club received over the past 12 months.

“COVID-19 has impacted all small businesses and has caused many to close down,” said Shannon Barnwell, events and marketing co-ordinator with the McGregor Columbian Club. “We are very, very lucky to be here with our doors open.”

Patti Hayes, constituency and outreach administrative assistant with Essex MPP Taras Natyshak’s office, said the funding from the OTF will also help continue to promote diversity and equity in the community. Businesses will be able to rebuild and bounce back and thus provide a “vibrant community that is accessible to everyone,” Hayes added.

Scott Duquette, a grant review team volunteer with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, pointed out it was his first ceremony since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and he was pleased to be there.

“All of the others have been on Zoom,” said Duquette. “It makes me feel really good to be here.”

Duquette added the OTF distributed $112 million to groups and organizations across the province last year and is one of the leading foundations in not only Ontario, but in Canada as well.

The $134,700 came from the OTF’s “Resilient Communities” fund to help businesses get through the pandemic safely and the money has helped reorganize business strategies, helped provide safety equipment and modified programming including some seniors programming.

“The OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

It has existed for about 40 years or so,” Duquette added.

The assembled group of socially distanced volunteers were also thanked by McGregor Columbian Club president Evan Belanger.

“Without you guys, we wouldn’t be able to be operating here today,” Belanger told the group. “We work together as a team.”

Notice of motion seems like a logical one to support

Councillor Peter Courtney put forth a notice of motion calling for such things as an audit on the town’s internal controls, projects in the last three years of over $300,000 and operating budget variances and that motion will be debated at the Dec. 13 meeting.

It appears to be a motion that should gain support around the table. Unless there is a reason that I’m not thinking of as to why another look at the town’s operations is a bad idea, this really should be a no-brainer for town council. Not having an audit review done, particularly in light of this motion requesting it, leaves the

town open to further criticism.

Courtney says this is a simple matter of town council doing its due diligence and making sure everything is in order. If something is found, it can be addressed.

If nothing is found or if only minor issues are uncovered, the public can have an added level of assurance.

The town has been through enough in recent months with staff turnover at town hall, the first three of which were asked to leave under a police presence.

Others have left since for various reasons – some of the reasons being attributed to better offers elsewhere - but the revolving door at town hall in recent months still has left many in the public questioning what is going on and why it is happening.

If Courtney’s motion ends up being approved in a couple of weeks, KPMG’s findings should provide some additional insight and information one way or

another, good or bad. Council has had questions of their own in recent months regarding various reports and motions so this will hopefully allow even elected officials additional information if they need it.

Whatever is found, should there be an audit review approved, it will provide additional information one way or another and that is never a bad thing.

Deal with whatever issues may be uncovered and bring the findings, whatever they may be, back into the public forum.

“Dose of reality” given on Open Air approval RE: Town Council approves new footprint for Open Air Weekends I would like to counter all the accolades with a dose of reality.

Shame on Anne Rota for recommending a report for adoption that omits compliance with provincial legislation.

Rota’s report referenced under-utilized parking for employees but plans to continue offering those spots. However, the alleged under-utilized accessible parking in the King’s Navy Yard Park lot will be reduced.

The rationale for this differentiation was unclear, until the council meeting when Ms. Rota stated this reduction would allow for a turn around to be created instead. Further, the plan is to add three accessible parking spaces in three locations at the outside perimeter.

Shame on council for approving a plan that fails to meet its obligation to consult with the public.

Mayor DiCarlo advised, in April 2021, the Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee was not consulted with respect to Open Air Weekends and only one person with a disability was consulted in the design

of the footprint.

It is mandatory, pursuant to O. Reg. 191/11: Integrated Accessibility Standards for the town to consult on the need, location and design of accessible on-street parking spaces and shall do so with the public and persons with disabilities as well as its Accessibility Advisory Committee.

My submission to members of council, prior to the council meeting, wherein I asked if the town would discriminate against persons with disabilities, quoted the provincial legislation regarding public consultation, and objected to the arbitrary placement of accessible parking spaces, especially in a distant perimeter, and accessible spaces that cannot be accessed due to road closures, was ignored.

Given council’s duty to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality, I must question the $90,000 taxpayer funded expenditure that creates barriers to persons with disabilities.

Watch out for phone scammers

I just wanted to warn people if you get a robot phone call for owing money, it’s a scam.

I got one only I didn’t let them do this to me. I had fought back and won. I just found out that they were a scam. They can’ t garnish your money either. It’s against the law. So, if any one out there gets a call like that just hang up. It sure wasn’t pleasant.

Paint issues claimed by resident

On Sept. 7, I went into Windsor in morning and noticed Essex County highways was doing road paint on County Road 20 on the way out of town. I went into Windsor and came back to Amherstburg and went to a dentist appointment in town. I turned left into dentist office. I went home and right away my wife asked me what was on my truck on driver’s side. I went out and checked and noticed yellow paint down along the whole side, tires and underneath.

I went to the dealership where I bought my vehicle to see what could be done. The gentlemen at the service counter came out and took pictures and set me up with a collision repair shop. My vehicle was scheduled and cleaned. Very much appreciated of the support and timing to have it cleaned off.

I called Essex County and reported it to a receptionist and she asked some questions and said a supervisor would call me. We paid the bill and sent it to them and never heard from anyone on this issue. Very disappointed in the zero response from Essex County roadways. Suggestions - call back with a response or better paint maybe?

Courtney’s notice of motion to be debated at next meeting

Courtney said town council has to do its due diligence and a third-party audit could either find any issues that exist or put the public’s minds at ease. He stated the idea behind the motion is not necessarily to find anything but if issues are discovered, town council can deal with them.

The motion is also a way to try and reinstate public confidence in council, he added.

“A third-party audit will quell and quiet gossip and we’ll have the facts,”

said Courtney.

Courtney said he is concerned with what he has been hearing from the public as well as reports that have come before him as a councillor. With a municipal election less than a year away and the process underway to hire a new full-time CAO, Courtney believes this is the time to undertake an audit review and ensure things are operating as they should. He believes the motion, if adopted, would show the town is doing what is should be doing and will “hopefully ease the minds of many.”

“Let (KPMG) take a look at it,” he said.

“Are things the way they should be?”

Courtney presented it as a notice of motion Nov. 22 to give fellow council members a chance to review the motion and to garner feedback from them as well as the public.

“Our town is in a rough state right now,” he said, noting the staff turnover as well. “The residents right now don’t have a lot of trust in council or administration. There’s a lot of gossip and innuendos running around. There’s a lot of ‘what the heck is going on?’”

There are still issues council members can’t state publicly, Courtney added, but believes his notice of motion could help answer some questions good or bad.

While he believes the town will be OK in the long run, there are still many in the public who have questions and concerns.

“I’m just hoping this will let them know we aren’t sitting around with our hands in our pockets,” said Courtney.

The notice of motion will be debated by town council at the Dec. 13 meeting.

Reports coming to give updates on Amherstburg Community Hub

By Ron Giofu A pair of reports could soon be before Amherstburg town council regarding the Amherstburg Community Hub. The property at 320 Richmond St. is being converted from a former elementary school into a multi-use facility with several tenants, but more work is needed to finish the building and also, as it was learned, to properly secure it.

Councillor Don McArthur wanted to know if a report was coming regarding the hub, whether it be good news or bad news. He acknowledged the desire of the Golden Age Club to move into the hub but noted the Verdi Club is seeking answers as well.

Director of community and protective services Heidi Baillargeon stated that reports are on the way.

“We are endeavoring to bring a report to council Dec. 13, an update on where we’re at,” she said. “We’re working with some financial info, collecting data and collecting a lot of the financial that goes behind that report.”

There could also be another report coming regarding the hub. A topic will likely be security of the building, something that has become an issue due to the temporary location of the skateboard park. The equipment was recently removed from the site and tenants had been reporting some skateboard park users were getting into the building and individual units creating mischief.

The latter report will definitely come before town council Dec. 13, Baillargeon said, and she is hoping for the other report the same meeting regarding the build-out of the facility and where the town stands regarding that.

The building currently houses Amherstburg Community Services, the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, the House Youth Centre and Amherstburg’s Fighting Island Boxing Club with the Verdi Club also expected to move in. There is an open, unfinished space that is currently being used as food bank storage.

Problems with fire truck cause it to pull out of Santa Claus Parade

By Ron Giofu A wiring issue with an Amherstburg fire truck caused it to leave the parade but the fire department says the truck is fine and still operational.

Assistant deputy fire chief Ron Meloche said people may have noticed sparks coming from the truck but he said there were no flames and the truck was pulled off the parade route onto Bathurst St. The problem was isolated and found to be a wiring issue in a pump area of the truck.

Firefighters hit it with a chemical solution to stop wires from melting and Meloche said he had the truck removed from the parade as a safety precaution.

The Jones Group did contracting work in the area and Edgewater Sewage Solutions was hired to do the lining, but additional issues caused that to be pushed back until 2022. He noted Jones Group did bring in a subcontractor to help with the brick sewer.

Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche asked about the estimated age of the drain, with Chamberlain guessing 90-100-years-old. Meloche asked if there were others that the town may not know about and Chamberlain said other brick sewers have been identified in town and there is consideration to lining those as well.

“We shut the truck down right away,” he said. “I didn’t want to leave it in the parade.”

Meloche added the truck was back in service later in the night as it responded to weather-related car accidents on Concession 3 North and Walker Road.

The 2018 truck is based out of Station #2.

“There were no injuries, the truck is fine,” he said, adding they are working with the manufacturer to see if it is a warranty issue.

The damage is described as “minimal,” said Meloche.

The parade was delayed slightly as the truck was removed but resumed shortly thereafter.

Homes receive heritage designation by town council despite objections

By Ron Giofu A pair of Amherstburg homes have received a heritage designation but council passed the associated bylaws without the owners being in favour of it.

The heritage designation was placed on homes at 109 Park St. and 275-77 Bathurst St., with the latter drawing concern of its owner Joe Shaw during the most recent regular meeting of Amherstburg town council. Shaw had voiced concerns at the Sept. 13 town council meeting but council voted to direct administration to “take action as required by legislation to designate 275-77 Bathurst St. as a Heritage Property in accordance with Part 4 of the Ontario Heritage Act.” Shaw estimated that it would take at least $500,000 to repair the property, providing a cost estimate from a local contractor as part of his presentation to town council.

“It doesn’t make sense to me as a property owner,” said Shaw.

He has expressed interest in demolishing the existing property, known municipally as the “Captain Robert Hackett Residence,” and replacing it with two semi-detached units similar to the ones recently built on Park St., at the foot of Bathurst St. “I want something that is very conducive to the area,” he said.

Shaw said he owns two other homes in the area, another on Bathurst St. and a home on Ramsay St., and said he has no interest in demolishing them.

“I am not opposed to heritage in town at all,” said Shaw. “I would not do that to (the other two homes).”

As for the home at 275-77 Bathurst St., Shaw indicated he would be open to options including selling or moving the home.

“Perhaps the town could buy it from me? I’ll give you a great deal,” he said.

Shaw questioned why the heritage aspect came up as much as it did.

“The heritage (issue) came up out of nowhere,” he said. “I’m just not getting it. I don’t understand why the home is so valuable. It can’t be saved. It needs to be gone.”

Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche questioned some of the items on the list of repairs provided by Shaw and his contractor, including $7,625 projected for foundation work. Councillor Marc Renaud put forth a motion to allow Shaw to get a more detailed look as to what is necessary from a structural engineer and report back at the Jan. 10 meeting but council would defeat that motion.

A suggestion to ensure it was an engineer with heritage credentials was made and Shaw found that “very cumbersome.” Councillor Don McArthur objected to the motion, believing they were trying “to engineer the outcome” and that it was unfair to Shaw to engage such an engineer only to have the engineer come back with a ruling similar to what has already been presented.

“The heritage planner has already told us repeatedly the home has tremendous value,” said McArthur.

nine criteria set out by the Ontario Heritage Act. “This property meets several criteria, not just one,” said Robertson.

Robertson added that many heritage properties require work thus believing this case is not unique.

“I don’t think this is an outlier,” he said.

Councillor Michael Prue asked if tearing down a home like the Bathurst St. property could weaken a case to establish a heritage conservation district in Amherstburg.

One house “is not going to make or break” a case for a heritage district, Robertson, responded, but if more and more owners asked for demolition if could be an issue.

“I’m concerned about if a precedent is set,” said Robertson.

Councillor Peter Courtney wondered what would happen if the home were to sit there if repairs are not able to be afforded. He said going forward with a heritage designation after a demolition permit has been applied for is too late in the game, noting the home has structural issues such as sloped floors.

“I believe in preservation of history, absolutely, but at what cost?” said Courtney.

“There is capital but only for a new property and not to restore,” Robertson charged. “It doesn’t seem capital is an issue.”

Robertson also indicated there is a plan to send letters to owners of older properties advising if they are properties of interest, noting there is also a list on the town’s website.

The home at 109 Park St. also received designation, though it was noted in a written report from Robertson that the owner of that home also objected. The report noted that council passed a motion April 8, 2019 to direct administration “to undertake the requirements set out in Section 29 of the Heritage Act to designate 109 Park Street as a Heritage house and that the owners be notified.” After the town issued a notice of intent to designate the property later that month, the owners objected in May 2019 and issued a notice of objection May 18, 2019.

“As a result of the owners’ objection, the matter was referred to the Ontario Land Tribunal (the “Tribunal”) - previously known as the Conservation Review Board. A hearing was held July 19, 2021 to determine whether, in the opinion of the Tribunal, the property should be designated,” Robertson wrote.

“On September 1, 2021 the Tribunal issued their report which determined that the property merits designation under criterion 3 (i) of Ontario Regulation 9/06, as per its contextual value, and its contribution to the heritage character of the area.”

Robertson’s report added: “The Tribunal recommended that the heritage value of the property be in reference to the property’s contextual value. The “Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest” in the designation bylaw aligns with that recommendation. The list of Heritage Attributes reflects the attributes presented at the Tribunal and which was accepted by the Tribunal.

The condition of the house is a legitimate concern. However, few sites that are designated across Ontario are without needed conservation work, and many undoubtedly need repair and restoration. The concept of limiting designation only to properties that don’t need conservation work would drastically limit the number of sites in Ontario or elsewhere that would qualify to be designated.”

“Addy’s Kindness Mission” helps homeless, gets support of her school and neighbours

By Ron Giofu A local youth is doing what she can to assist the homeless.

Addy Kidd, a local Grade 2 student, presented “Addy’s Kindness Mission” in front of her home with the help of her parents and family Sunday afternoon. The goal was to raise money and clothing for the homeless and others in need.

Kidd predicted she would raise $1,000 and she kept track of it herself by marking it in a small book she had out at the end of her driveway with the baked goods and crafts she was also selling. She said she wanted to “help people that don’t have houses or need warm clothes.”

As of Monday morning, Kidd had raised $1,030 as well as 43 coats, 15 pairs of snow pants, 44 hats and scarves, 23 blankets, 17 sweaters and 12 pairs of socks with more donations expected to roll in.

The local elementary school student added it makes her feel “really good” to help others. She got the idea while doing artwork at home with her family.

“We were doing crafts and we wanted to make pictures for someone we didn’t know to bring happiness,” she said. “Then we decided we wanted to get some donations.”

to be kind.” “(Addy) wanted to share with people who have no clothes or homes,” said Steph.

Addy was shocked to learn about homeless people and what they go through, her mother added. Final destinations for the goods and cash are being decided upon, with such organizations as the mission, the Canadian Mental Health Association and local homeless shelters being talked about. Steph said they will likely divide the total amount they receive and try to help as many people and organizations as possible.

“We have a lot of charities that do need the help,” said Steph.

Amherstburg resident facing drug trafficking charges The Windsor Police Service Drugs and Guns Enforcement Unit (DIGS) has charged an Amherstburg resident for allegedly trafficking illicit drugs.

The police service states investigators from the DIGS Unit launched an investigation into the suspected trafficking of illicit drugs in the Town of Amherstburg in November.

During the investigation, police add a suspect and residence was identified as being involved.

A search warrant was applied for and granted for the involved residence, located in the 300 block of Victoria St. S. On Nov. 23, police say the suspect was located and arrested without incident in the 400 block of Sandwich St. S. Windsor police add the search warrant was executed at the involved residence.

It is alleged the officers located and seized a quantity of various illicit drugs and a quantity of currency.

A 42-year-old male from Amherstburg is charged with nine counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The drugs that were allegedly involved included, 1.8g of fentanyl, 3.7g of cocaine, 4.2g of psilocybin, 3.2g of crack cocaine, 24 5mg oxycodone pills, 3 20mg oxycodone pills, 9 30mg amphetamine (Adderall) pills, 2 lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) tabs, and 8.2g of crystal methamphetamine.

Impaired driving The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment state there were two impaired driving arrests in Amherstburg Nov. 27. One person was arrested with their three-year-old child in the car and allegedly blew more than twice the legal limit.

Police add the second driver was allegedly travelling in the wrong lane. An officer in the area was flagged down by concerned citizens.

Pedestrian struck Patrol officers attended the intersection of Dalhousie St. and Murray St. for a report a pedestrian struck by a vehicle Nov. 27 around 11:10 a.m. Police say the pedestrian, a female adult, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The male driver of the vehicle remained on scene and through investigation was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with fail to yield to a pedestrian.

Scam calls The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment is advising residents to be wary of telemarketers, in light of the fact the people posing from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are contacting people once again. Police say these are not legitimate calls and urge people not to give out any personal information. If people have any questions about a call they received, they are invited to call police.

According to the CRA’s website, red flags that suggest a person that may be a scammer include, but are not limited to, the inability to provide proof of working for the CRA such as a name or office location, the caller is pressuring a person to act now, the caller is asking a person to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency or some other unusual manner, the caller is asking for information that is not included on tax returns or that is not related to money owing the CRA such as a credit card number or the caller is recommending that a person apply for benefits. Regarding the latter point, the CRA states Canadians can apply for benefits on Government of Canada websites or by phone and the CRA recommends people not provide information to callers offering to apply for benefits on their behalf.

Lock your cars With the Christmas shopping season having arrived, people are reminded to ensure their vehicles are locked and that items of value, including Christmas presents, are stored out of site. Gifts and other valuables should be stored in the trunk of the vehicle or somewhere that is not visible to those seeking to steal from vehicles. Valuables should be brought inside when arriving home.

The public is also reminded to lock homes, shed, barns and other outbuildings when not in use.

Deer vs. car Another deer versus vehicle collision was reported Nov. 24. Police say a vehicle travelling eastbound on Alma St. struck a deer that entered the roadway in the path of the car just east of Meloche Road. There was significant damage to the vehicle, but no injuries, police say.

ACS pleased with turnout at first-ever Holiday Bazaar

“I think with the great response we had, we’ll make this a regular event,” she stated. “The feedback I’m hearing is very positive about the event as well as the space.”

There was a mix of new and fresh faces that walked through ACS’ community room, she added, and the Holiday Bazaar was another opportunity for the public to see the agency’s new space within the Amherstburg Community Hub. She added she overheard people talking about what day they come in and use the community room and ACS’ programming.

ACS teams with the Rotary Club of Amherstburg this Saturday for “Breakfast with Santa” with 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. seatings. People have to register in advance and, if interested, are asked to call ACS at 519-736-5471 and check to see if there is still availability.

“It’s a very busy season for ACS,” said DiBartolomeo. “We’re glad to see the public’s support.”

The community room at Amherstburg Community Services’ office was a busy place as holiday shoppers came through last Saturday.

ACS held its first-ever Holiday Bazaar last Saturday with people streaming through at a steady pace buying holiday goods and snacks. The amount of people that came through was a welcome sight to staff and volunteers, including ACS executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo.

“We’re very pleased,” said DiBartolomeo, as she did her own shopping. “Everyone is happy, everyone is finding little goodies. The response has just been fantastic.”

DiBartolomeo added ACS was also pleased to see so many people out to support them. All proceeds will go back into Amherstburg Community Services’ operations, including to support the non-profit agency’s programming.

“I think people are excited to get out and do their shopping in public with other people,” said DiBartolomeo. “It’s nice to have their support.”

The goods were all put out by ACS, though DiBartolomeo pointed out they had numerous people come forward and help them out as well with donations.

“A lot has been donated from within the community,” she said. “They donated everything from Amherstburg .......... holiday cards to crafts and everything else.”

Lady Gens drop season opener 2-1 in close hockey game Two home games next week for Lady Gens

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst girls hockey team played well for the most part, but fell short in their season opener.

The Lady Gens kicked off the WECSSAA high school hockey season with a 2-1 loss to Lajeunesse Monday afternoon at the Libro Centre. Payton Quenneville's two first period goals stood up and gave the visitors the win though Lauren Wilkinson also was a factor as she played well in the Lajeunesse goal.

Sam Connell scored General Amherst's goal in the third period.

Goalie Carsyn Atkinson also played well for the Lady Gens, making several key saves of her own.

“It was so good to be back with the kids,” said Lady Gens head coach Dan Pettypiece. “It's been a very, very frustrating year-and-a-half for the kids and everyone else. They are excited.”

The Lady Gens have some challenges this year as they have a lot of young players and others that haven't played hockey for a while, but Pettypiece

believes they will come around. He added they were nervous for the first five minutes of the Lajeunesse game and played well the rest of the way. He said they need to do a better job screening the opposition goalies and to be more patient with the puck.

There are smaller numbers of students playing this year, he added, something they knew would happen but he believes the team will be fine.

They were also missing a key player in Monday's game.

Pettypiece added the main goal this year is to simply have fun and give the players a return to normalcy, noting there is no SWOSSAA or OFSAA this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Madison Drouillard and Hanna Coulson, two newcomers to the team, believe the team played well once they got over their butterflies.

“It was good. Their goal was great,” said Coulson. “I believe we were pretty fair. It was fun.”

“I think some people were nervous in the beginning,” added Drouillard.

Drouillard said she hasn't played hockey in three years but Coulson said she plays regularly. Both believe the team is growing together.

“We have to bond so we pass better,” said Coulson. “I think we'll do well. We have to practice more with our accuracy and getting the puck out of our zone.”

Assistant coach Bill Atkinson was pleased with the Lady Gens' effort.

“It was good. For our first game of the year, we did well,” he said.

The team is “a mish mash” of players, some with experience and some not so much.

“It's a very diverse team,” said Atkinson. “There are as many Grade 9

players as there are Grade 12s.”

Atkinson added they had chances against Lajeunesse and played better the second half of the game.

“We definitely had opportunities to tie or win the game,” he said, adding Amherst teacher Glen Holden helped them be able to play by volunteering at the last minute to referee.

The Lady Gens are at the Vollmer Centre in LaSalle today to play Sandwich at 4 p.m. Their next three games after that are at home against Essex (Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.), St. Joseph (Dec. 8 at 3:30 p.m.) and Kingsville (Dec. 13 at 4 p.m.)

Special teams sink Admirals in pair of weekend losses

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Admirals lost both games they played over the weekend but at least they know what needs improving.

Special teams were shown to be an area that needs work after losses to Wallaceburg and Lakeshore Saturday and Sunday respectively. The most recent game was a 5-2 loss Sunday night at the Libro Centre with Lakeshore scoring four times on the powerplay and what proved to be the game-winning goal while shorthanded.

The Admirals started quickly Sunday night, registering the game’s first seven shots and potting the first two goals within the first 4:37 of the game

thanks to Max Jones and Connor Demelo. However, the Canadiens tied the game with a pair of goals while on the man-advantage before the first period was out.

After a scoreless second period, Lakeshore scored three in the third period, a shorthanded goal early in the frame followed by two powerplay goals.

“I think everything boils down to special teams,” said Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon. “The first (Lakeshore) goal took the wind out of our sails.”

The second goal came after a penalty Bortignon felt was “iffy” but he credited the first-place Canadiens for their effort.

The Admirals’ five-game winning streak was snapped in Saturday’s game.

They had beaten Petrolia 4-3 in overtime last Thursday with Brandon Salvati scoring the game-winning goal 4:39 into the extra period. Salvati had two goals and two assists against the Flyers that night with Mitchell Demelo scoring a goal and three assists that night. Max Clifford scored the other Amherstburg goal.

Petrolia comes to Amherstburg this Sunday for a 7 p.m. game in the Admirals’ lone game this week.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rick Durham at the age of 68 on November 26, 2021.

Beloved spouse and best friend of Sheila (nee Grant, Myer). Loving son of Earl (2020) and Veronica. Loving dad to Joanna (Rob Hickey), Jeff, Katie Wauthier (Curtis Brown). He was a Retiree of CP Rail and was recently working as an Amherstburg Crossing Guard at Fryer and Simcoe.

Coates, Amherstburg, and the staff at Malden Park especially Jennifer, Stephanie and Amy. Rotary Club welcomes new member, donates to upcoming “Breakfast with Santa” event

By Ron Giofu A new member has been welcomed into the Rotary Club of Amherstburg and the club also contributed towards an upcoming event.

At a busy meeting last Wednesday night, the club inducted Don MacKay into its ranks. MacKay and his wife Christine moved to Amherstburg from Bowmanville approximately six years ago and enjoy giving back to the community, and wants to do more now that he is retired from his cleaning company that he ran for 18 years.

“I’ve always enjoyed serving the community,” said MacKay. MacKay does have experience serving with the Lions Club while in Bowmanville and has joined Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 since moving to Amherst-

burg. He said he enjoys helping people in need and believes contributing to where he lives is crucial.

“This is our community. It is very important,” he said. “We love our community.”

Christine added being involved in such things as service clubs is something they have always liked to do.

“It makes you feel like you are making a difference,” she said.

MacKay said his goal is simply “to do as much as we can” and to keep active in the community. He pointed out he also plays pickleball in Amherstburg and uses the tennis courts in Anderdon Park. He noticed the Rotary Club logo on the basketball courts next to the tennis courts and notices young and old alike enjoying the courts.

Christine stated she is originally from Chicago and, as it turned out, they moved to a home on Illinois St. She said when they were looking to move from Bowmanville, they wanted to be closer to the Canada-U.S. border so it would be easier to visit her family. While the onset of the COVID-19 has impacted that plan, the couple still loves living locally with Christine stating she broke out in tears upon arrival in Amherstburg knowing this was the place she wanted to live in.

“We’re just happy to live here,” she said. “It’s a wonderful area to live in.”

Rotary Club secretary Joan Donaldson was MacKay’s sponsor and said it was MacKay who approached the club about joining.

“Don displays a willingness to get

involved, is full of great ideas and has a great sense of humour,” said Donaldson. “I think he will bring his enthusiasm and energy as we move out of this pandemic. We are pleased he chose us!”

The Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee and Town of Amherstburg are seeking input on its Multi-year Accessibility Plan.

The Town’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan outlines the outcomes and initiatives that reaffirm the Town’s commitment to an accessible community and to building an equitable and inclusive society that values the contributions of people with disabilities. This key component of the Town’s accessible framework outlines how the Town will provide an accessible environment in which people with disabilities can access the Town’s goods, services and facilities, public spaces, information and communications, and employment opportunities, in a way that meets with their individual needs.

The Town is committed to supporting Town employees through advice, policies, tools, resources and governance structures that promote an inclusive workplace and support staff in providing accessible goods, services and facilities.
