AAM Goodfellows raise $15,800 in newspaper sales

By Ron Giofu The AAM Goodfellows’ annual newspaper sales brought in thousands of dollars to help the community.

Volunteers with the Goodfellows returned to the streets and storefronts of Amherstburg last Friday and Saturday and raised approximately $15,800.

AAM Goodfellows president Rick Murray said they raised about $9,800 Friday when there were morning and afternoon sales and an additional $6,000 last Saturday morning.

“We did pretty good,” said Murray. “The weather was pretty nice for a change except for the showers Saturday morning. Everything was good.”

Murray said the $15,800 was down a bit from last year but that was because they had a higher than usual total in 2020.

“It was less than last year but last year seemed to be an exceptional year for us,” said Murray. “But compared to past years, it was about normal.”

Murray wondered if people were extra generous last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“All of the money is going to the food baskets,” Murray stated.

About 45 people volunteered their time last Friday with another 35 volunteers giving back Saturday.

The food for the food baskets is purchased through Sobeys with the help of franchise owner Rennie Rota.

“He gives us as good of a deal as he can on prices.

He watches for sales to keep our costs lower,” said Murray.

Town council agrees to undertake an audit of municipality

Motion presented by Councillor Peter Courtney approved by council colleagues

By Ron Giofu Amherstburg town council has agreed to undertake an audit review of the municipality.

Councillor Peter Courtney made the motion, that was originally put forth late last month as a notice of motion, and it calls for a review of internal controls of the town, operating budget variances for the fiscal years 2018-21 and capital projects completed “and/or underway” for the fiscal years 2018-21 with a project value of greater than $300,000 including the development of the Amherstburg Community Hub at 320 Richmond St. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche would vote in favour, but did question the need for such a review.

“I’m trying to understand the reason for this request,” said Meloche. “I go back to 2014, there was a big review done by Deloitte. They looked at everything.”

Meloche pointed out 42 recommendations came out of that and policies were amended and written “to move us forward.” He said KPMG, who will be the same firm undertaking the current audit, reviews the town annually.

“We’ve put our house in order with policies and procedures,” said Meloche.

Courtney defended his motion, noting there have been reports to town council that have “raised eyebrows” and caused concern.

“I don’t know where you’ve been for the past little bit,” Courtney told Meloche.

If the audit finds things wrong, the town can correct it, Courtney continued, and if there is nothing found,

residents can get reassurance.

“This is about transparency,” said Courtney.

Courtney added the town’s integrity and transparency is being called into question and believes this is a worthwhile expense. He said a new council will be on the job a year from now and a new CAO is also coming and having a review allows everyone to get off on a good footing.

“We are doing our due diligence. Coming up with this motion substantiates that,” he said. “If council chooses to enact this, I think we are in a better position moving forward.”

Meloche said policies can be broken but it doesn’t necessitate a full review. If the review finds out a policy was broken, he believes all that could be done is to better adhere to existing policies.

Interim CAO Tony Haddad said he had a conference call with Courtney and KPMG representatives and went over what could occur. Council would have to determine what the exact scope of the audit is, what the expected outcomes are and give KPMG the direction the town wishes to see.

Costs could range from $20,000 to into the “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Haddad stated, adding costs would have to be built into the 2022 budget.

Councillor Don McArthur thinks what has happened at town hall over the past several months has left people asking questions. While an audit may or may not get all of the answers, it could provide more reassurance to residents, he said.

there is still an official report to come on that matter.

He noted council has been told there were change orders regarding the Duffy’s site that should have been brought to council’s attention.

The town needs to “move on,” he added, believing an audit can help everyone do that.

Councillor Marc Renaud added he too wanted to look at projects like Duffy’s and the hub.

“I think bringing in an outside review makes sense,” said Renaud. “I think it will reassure residents if something is going on or not. I think we have to move forward with an audit.”

“I think it’s important,” added Councillor Patricia Simone.

Simone also pointed out a new CAO is coming in early next year and “I think they need to come in with a clean slate.” An audit would also help dispel rumours, adding she hopes it comes back with nothing serious found.

Councillor Michael Prue added $250,000 is about one per cent of the town’s budget and he feels that it is worth it to assure residents to show they are trying to get answers.

Prue said he has questions himself, including the development of properties, that he wants answers to.

If an audit shows everything is fine, “I want to know that” and it would show that town council is not afraid to look.

Not doing an audit would lead to more questions and concerns, he believed.

“I know if we don’t do this (audit), that will continue and that’s not good for the people of this town,” he said. “I don’t have any hesitancy to do this at all.”

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg heritage committee has endorsed plans for the restoration of the building at 72 Murray St. Architect Settimo Vilardi represented the building’s ownership group before the committee last Thursday night and outlined what is planned for the property.

The building, located at the northwest corner of Murray St. and Ramsay St., formerly housed 2-Way Automotive before the latter’s move to Renaud St. New planned uses for the building include commercial space on the main floor including the possibility of retail and restaurant and café space with renderings showing a patio space at street level.

Upper floors could include a boutique hotel/Airbnb with a rooftop terrace and event space on the top of the building.

“The footprint doesn’t change,” Vilardi told the committee. “The four walls don’t change.”

The front façade that faces Murray St. would largely remain the same with Vilardi pointing out they would remove a shingled awing along the front and add and preserve cornice mouldings.

“The intent is to preserve as many existing history features as possible,” Vilardi stated.

The goal is to keep the existing brick and remove the peeling paint and return the building to its natural brick colour, except for the work around the signage and the doors and windows. After a question from committee chair Simon Chamley about what would happen if their testing on the bricks reveals damage, the alternate plan would be to take off all the paint as possible, repair the bricks and recoat the bricks that are not salvageable. They would still repoint and save as many bricks as they could.

The main floor along Ramsay St. would see windows and doors installed along what is now a blank wall, Vilardi noted.

“We are going to create window openings along the bottom half to allow new tenants in that area,” he told committee members.

The third-floor addition would be more towards the rear of the building, Vilardi stated, and not as visible from the front. An addition that is on the current building would be removed and replaced and a rooftop terrace would include an indoor structure with such amenities as washrooms, etc.

The building would have a “massive interior upgrade” but the goal is to maintain the “strong heritage aspect” of the building, he noted.

According to a report from Clint Robertson, the town’s heritage planner, the building at 72 Murray St. is not designated as heritage but is a “property of interest.” It was built in 1879.

“On September 17, 2021, administration was presented with a concept and drawings to retain and redevelop the property for use as a boutique hotel, commercial space, and a rooftop terrace event space,” Robertson’s report stated.

“Given the significant interventions to the heritage fabric and character of the building, as well as other planning considerations, administration requested that the proponent apply for site plan approval.”

Robertson stated in earlier versions of the concept, he opposed the placement of the rooftop additions as they were “too close” or along the Murray St. and Ramsay St. facades, as well as the detailing of the new storefront additions and the quantity of new storefronts and their openings. His opinion was the interventions “strayed too far from heritage conservation best-practice as per the Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada - Parks Canada, 2010 (the “Standards”).”

Robertson noted the rooftop additions “have largely been shifted to the back of the building, new openings have been reduced in number and in size by eliminating a storefront on the rear of the building and reducing the size of the openings on the west façade.” He added the detailing on the new side storefronts have been “simplified.”

“While the interventions are significant, they are now more in keeping with heritage conservation best practices and align with other Town objectives.

Specifically, the new storefronts on the sides of the building create a better retail and pedestrian environment, the rooftop additions help to support the use of

the building as a hotel, which aligns with the Town objective of supporting and increasing hotel accommodations,” the report added.

“I really like it,” said committee member Jennie Lajoie, who believed there is a similarity between what is proposed at 72 Murray St. and “Hough Block” on Dalhousie St. that was recently refurbished by owners Mark and Kirsten Kurzuk.

Vilardi said it may be similar in colours but there are different materials proposed for the Murray St. building.

Committee member Robert Honor said he was happy with the cornice mouldings and noted while the rooftop addition has a newer look, a person’s eye won’t be drawn immediately to it. Committee member Stephanie Pouget-Papak added similar remarks, praising the design and cornice mouldings while noting the new addition is now towards the rear of the building.

“It’s really well done,” said Pouget-Papak.

“I think it’s a wonderful complement to the area,” added Councillor Patricia Simone, who is the council appointee to the heritage committee. “I think it will be great at that location.”

The committee’s endorsement will be provided to town council when the latter considers the project’s site plan application.

Taxpayer concerned after Essex County council passes 2022 budget Last week Warden McNamara was highlighted on CKLW praising the 2022 budget and the good work administration and council members completed.

In 2021, taxes levied were $112,495,490.

For 2022, they are projected to be $ 116,676,170.

A tax increase of 3.7 per cent.

Being retired and on a fixed income, we will be faced with making choices as to what quality of life factor is reduced in order to pay for this increase.

Amherstburg taxpayers will be responsible for approximately $13,067,731 of this budgeted cost.

In 2014 prior to the last two councils Amherstburg taxpayers were responsible for $8,773,776. Over this projected eight-year period our taxes will have gone up 48.9 per cent.

I know that costs increase but where is the fiscal restraint especially this year and where are our elected officials?

Can’t wait to see our budget in Amherstburg.

Goodfellow food basket distribution will be Monday, volunteers welcome

The food baskets will be packed this Sunday starting at around 12 noon at the Columbus Community Hall at 190 Richmond St. Murray said they welcome new volunteers to come and help out.

“We’ll take any volunteers,” said Murray. “The volunteers have to be double-vaccinated according to board of health rules. If young people want to come out, it’s not a problem but they have to be double-vaxxed. ” Volunteers must also work with a mask on, he added.

As the Columbus Community Hall has a capacity of over 200 people, Murray said restrictions allow for at least 100 volunteers but he noted they usually don’t need that many. Those who volunteer will also have to sign in so there can be contact tracing.

Food baskets will be distributed next Monday – Dec. 20 – from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Murray said as of Sunday evening, they have about 98 people who have registered for a food basket.

The AAM Goodfellows are following the same process as they have been doing for “years and years,” he added, where people had to call in advance for a food basket and then come to the Columbus Community Hall to pick it up.

Murray added the Goodfellows are thankful to the volunteers that come and help out to assist them in serving those in need in the Amherstburg community.

Natyshak will not seek re-election in next June’s provincial election

Calling it “the honour of my life to serve my community,” the MPP for the riding of Essex is stating his political service will not continue.

Essex MPP Taras Natyshak has stated he will not seek re-election in the June 2, 2022 provincial election.

He announced his decision last Friday afternoon in a statement posted to the Ontario NDP website.

“After more than 10 years as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Essex, I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election in 2022,” Natyshak stated. “This choice is bittersweet. I fully believe Andrea Horwath will be elected premier in 2022. It was incredibly difficult to choose not to be a member of her caucus as we form a government that’s in it for everyday people.”

Natyshak attributes his decision to a desire to spend more time with his family.

“After a decade of splitting time between Essex and Queen’s Park in Toronto, what’s right for my family now is for me to be with them full time,” he stated.

The 44-year-old Natyshak had three unsuccessful runs as a federal candidate (2006, 2008, 2011) but at the provincial level is where he found his calling, winning in 2011 and being re-elected in 2014 and 2018. After all of that, he sees now as the time to step away and try something else.

“For me, it was the right time,” he told the RTT. “When I add it all up, it's been a long time in public service.”

Natyshak added he has no idea what is next, but he hopes to serve the community in some fashion.

“If I'm not working at a job where I'm serving other people and making their lives better, I'm probably not in the right job,” he said.

There is “a long runway ahead of me, I hope,” and Natyshak stated he has time to pursue other opportunities. He said he has a picture of his daughter Airika as a one-year-old with then-federal NDP leader Jack Layton and now she's soon heading to university.

“Life passes by in the blink of an eye,” he said. “It's difficult to leave a job that I absolutely love. It does feel a bit bizarre, especially at 44-years-old, to retire from politics but it just feels like the right time.”

His statement noted he is “forever grateful to the people of our amazing community who have entrusted me to fight on their behalf to make our province a better place for all. I am proud of the work I’ve been able to do to secure critical investments in our community such as the new regional hospital and Highway 3 widening. The local Member of Provincial Parliament offered his thanks to many including Horwath, the provincial NDP leader.

“Andrea Horwath has been a mentor, a leader and a friend. She’s supported me, inspired me, and made this job a lot of fun. She’s exactly what Ontario needs now — someone who is laser-focused on workers, not the wealthy. On local business, not the big box stores. On investing in our kids and their future, not making cuts,” Natyshak's statement read. “I also want to thank the wonderful people of Essex. I’ve met so many amazing people who have shared their stories and hopes with me. I am humbled by the trust that they have given me to fight on their behalf.”

Natyshak also thanked his family and friends “for their unwavering support and love throughout my entire political career. This journey started over 16 years ago and could not have been possible without their support.”

The NDP MPP added that “no elected official could be successful without the support of a great team. Our constituency team has dedicated their hearts to our community to help solve some of the most difficult challenges people face. To Jody, Patty, Nolan, Katrina and Merve, I am forever grateful for you.”

Of his staff, he added “they are really special people who do tremendous work.”

Natyshak also thanked his New Democrat colleagues.

“I am so lucky to be fighting the good fight alongside you. Many of you have inspired me, and the laughter and fun has been good for the soul,” he stated. “I have loved literally every minute of being the critic for Ethics and Accountability. It’s given me the opportunity to be a truly gleeful warrior.”

As 2021 draws to a close and marks the end of my third year as Councillor for the Town of Amherstburg, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the residents, Town staff and council for their resilience during an uncertain year.

While COVID-19 rules and restrictions continued to dominate the media, the Amherstburg community again came together to help our residents. Many local businesses held toy/food drives and turkey giveaways, the second Miracle food collection was held, and our community service groups continued to provide support to Amherstburg residents. Thank you to everyone, staff and volunteers, who stepped up during these unprecedented times for our community. Thank you to all frontline workers for all you do.

As we all know, Town Hall has seen some transition in 2021. Even during this transition, Town employees show up day after day and continue to work hard for our community. They keep forging ahead with tasks needing to be done. The Town does not come to a halt because of the departure of some individuals. The Town moves forward because of the individuals that show up daily and work together as a team to get the job done. Thank you to our amazing team in all departments.

I would be remiss if I did not thank my fellow council members. Thank you, to each of you, for your commitment to our community. While we may not always agree on a topic, I know we always work hard to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of our residents.

Meloche draws from youth in giving back to the mission

The mission received 44 gift cards from Leo and Andrea Meloche. The cards are valued at a total of $1,100 with $1,000 being from Leo and another $100 from Andrea. Meloche made a similar donation last year.

Meloche, the town’s current deputy mayor, said he is trying to get his daughter as well as other younger people involved in giving back.

“I’m trying to get her involved in helping the needy,” he said. “I don’t look at it as charity. I look at this as helping people in need.”

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted a lot of people, Meloche continued, as a lot of people have lost their jobs or have had their hours cut at their place of employment.

Not only are there more people in need, it has also meant there are fewer people able to give back to their communities.

“It’s impacted people’s ability to give more to help other people,” said Meloche.

Meloche said he has worked with food banks in the past and has learned that it is not only food people need. There are toiletries and other basic necessities that

people require to get through the day as well.

“This (donation) gives them the opportunity to go out and get other necessities,” said Meloche.

Meloche said when he was growing up, sometimes his family would require food baskets and he has never forgotten that.

“At the end of the day, I’m trying to do my part to help the community,” said Meloche. “I encourage others to do the same.”

Adding that Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission president Tim McAllister and his team of volunteers “do a great job,” Meloche stated “it’s nice to see a necessary service being provided in the community. I want to thank Tim for that.”

McAllister said he was excited by the donation and offered thanks of his own.

He said the gift cards will be given to people who need them if the mission doesn’t have the goods they need.

“Any time a donation comes in like this, it makes my job easier to help those who need it,” said McAllister. “When someone blesses me, I bless other people. It’s like a river flowing. The person giving (the donation) is happy, I’m happy and (the recipient) is happy.”

Public, Catholic school boards bring back same chairpersons for 2021-22 organizational year

By Ron Giofu There are familiar faces back atop both the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) and the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB).

The most recent of the two organizational meetings held by the school boards was that of the GECDSB. All positions were acclamations and there were no votes at any of the positions.

There were no changes to the chairperson’s position nor that of the vice chairperson with the committees looking similar as well. Trustee Alicia Higgison from Tecumseh/Lakeshore was acclaimed as chairperson of the GECDSB while trustee Cathy Cooke of Windsor Wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 will remain as vice chair.

Aimee Omstead, the trustee for Leamington and Pelee Island, is back as education committee chair while Essex/Kingsville trustee Julia Burgess will once again serve as vice chair.

The operations and finance committee will be chaired by Windsor Ward 3, 4 and 10 trustee Sarah Cipkar while Linda Qin, a Windsor trustee for Wards 1, 2 and 9 will serve as vice chair. The closest the public board came to a vote on any of the positions was for the vice chair position of the operations and finance committee as Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee Ron LeClair accepted a nomination but would later pull his name after Qin also accepted her nomination.

“We all have this experience right now of missing something – missing friends and family we’re apart from, missing the fluidity and ease of life we knew of COVID-19, missing luxuries like travel or the simplicities of sipping a coffee while grocery shopping,” said Higgison. “We miss routines. We miss expected norms. We miss calm. We miss each other.”

that it didn’t work for everyone.

“The baseline for new normal is still shifting as we sit here tonight,” she said during the Dec. 7 meeting.

“In an educational institution where we are setting the foundation as future leaders, it’s both our privilege and our responsibility to shift.”

There used to be a familiar way to send children to school as a parent and she has learned what goes into a school day and the “behind the scenes” work that goes into a regular school day.

“It doesn’t just happen,” she said. “It’s the result of people dedicating their lives to the pursuit of student success.”

Higgison said she has learned a lot as chair and “I

have felt the shift of our footings when consistently faced with turmoil, trauma, setbacks, leaps, challenges and successes, sometimes all of them in one day.” She added there are still great things happening with students and educators.

“We may be navigating it all with COVID safety goggles on but we are pushing onward together and building tomorrow together,” she said.

The GECDSB is dealing with “transformational” issues such as anti-racism, de-streaming, reconciliation, the climate emergency, literacy and numeracy gains and gaps, mental health challenges and a growing capital portfolio all while under a pandemic.

Pair of accidents lead to charges against Windsor drivers

Higgison called for people to get vaccinated and thanked public health partners for helping “to keep our communities safe.” She added she was humbled to be acclaimed for a second year, noting it is not standard practice of the GECDSB to return the same person for a consecutive term.

“Leadership is not inherent in one person, it’s the result of lifting many voices,” said Higgison.

The WECDSB held their organizational meeting the previous week and returned Windsor trustee Fulvio Valentinis to the chairperson’s position and Lisa Soulliere to the vice chair’s role.

“I do not need to tell you this is a very challenging time for school boards but there is much we can be proud of. We can be proud of our enrolment; we can be proud of our academic achievement; and we can be proud of our continued diverse programming.

With this continued growth and initiatives, our students have a multitude of opportunities to grow and explore,” said Valentinis. “As a Board, it is important that we be strategic; it is important that we be disciplined; it is important that we are focused and that we are united in our goals. Our success is the result of these; it does not happen by chance. It is the result of the commitment, dedication and hard work of teachers, support staff and administration.”

Valentinis noted the board and administration have collaborated well, first under director of education Terry Lyons and, now that he’s retired, new director Emelda Byrne. He said Byrne “jumped in, took charge and certainly leads this board and administration. We are very grateful to have her.”

Upgrading aging schools and seeing the completion of the new Catholic Central High School in Windsor are goals for the coming year.

“I would like to reaffirm my commitment to working together with trustees and administration as we move forward to meet the challenges ahead. We will continue to provide a safe learning environment, especially during this pandemic, for students and staff,” he added.

Valentinis praised staff and administration for their work, calling in “phenomenal” and noted their “commitment and leadership.”

“As a system, we will move forward and together we will succeed,” said Valentinis.

A pair of car accidents in recent weeks has led to charges against two drivers from Windsor.

The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Concession 6 North and Middle Side Road (County Road 10) Nov. 29.

According to police, a westbound vehicle on Middle Side Road collided with a northbound vehicle allegedly coming from Concession 6 North. The driver of the latter vehicle, a 45-year-old Windsor woman, was charged with failing to yield to traffic. There were no injuries.

The second accident occurred on County Road 41 Dec. 2 around 3:45 p.m. Police say it was a two-vehicle crash where one driver was attempting to pass a second vehicle with the second vehicle allegedly turning left into the other vehicle’s path. There were no injuries in this crash either. One driver, a 27-year-old Windsor

man, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with turning left not in safety.

Upset caller to town hall

The Windsor Police Service can confirm there was a police presence at Amherstburg Town Hall Dec. 8 in relation to employees receiving phone calls from an upset caller. Police say the caller had made comments that employees were concerned may be threatening in nature towards town employees and notified police.

Officers launched an investigation and were able to identify the caller. Through investigation, officers determined that no direct threats were made and therefore, no criminal charges were laid. The caller was spoken to and was cooperative with the police during the investigation.

Vaccinations continue to be pushed by Windsor Regional Hospital

By Ron Giofu Rising COVID-19 case counts were pointed out at the most recent meeting of the Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) board of directors.

WRH president and CEO David Musyj noted the seven-day average continues to increase in Windsor-Essex County and the case count is averaging roughly higher now than it did at this point last year. He noted about 70 per cent of hospitalized COVID-19 cases are coming from the 20 per cent of the population that remain unvaccinated. A big increase occurred last year after the Christmas holidays.

“In context, we are clearly about the same, maybe a bit worse than last year. The issue is what happens over the next three weeks in terms of case counts and where they are going to go,” said Musyj.

Musyj attributed the rising numbers to the Delta variant, noting that as of last Thursday evening’s meeting, the Omicron variant had yet to be detected in Windsor-Essex.

While much of the focus has been on vaccines, Musyj also called for “a layered approach” which also includes masks, staying home if sick, and hand washing all the way through to vaccines and proper ventilation. He referred to it as the “swiss cheese” approach where the virus may get through some holes so multiple measures are needed from it getting through all approaches.

WRH has implemented everything they have power over, he noted.

“Not one single intervention is perfect,” he said. “If COVID makes it through the mask issue, maybe it gets stopped at physical distancing. Not all the holes line up and that’s where the swiss cheese kicks in. That’s why all the steps are important.”

Rapid antigen tests being available is another important issue, Musyj said.

He said more than 12 cases at WRH saw a young person in a home testing positive and that prevents family members as well as themselves spreading the virus. If positive, they get a PCR test to confirm meanwhile the family members isolate before they

get a chance to spread the virus.

Bed capacity issues have been a challenge at local hospitals, noted Karen Riddell, COO and chief nursing executive at WRH. As for the Omicron variant, Dr. Wassim Saad, chief of staff, added that there are a lot of unknowns to the new variants “but what we know is that it appears to be more transmissible than Delta.” That means it will likely become the dominant variant just as Delta overtook Alpha.

As of Tuesday morning, there was one case of Omicron being reported by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s website.

“What we don’t know yet whether Omicron is deadlier than Delta. There’s not a lot of evidence saying whether that is the case or not,” said Dr. Saad.

“A lot of people being infected with Omicron appear to have milder symptoms but, of course, we know if you end up infecting more people with a milder virus you still may end up having larger numbers just by virtue of the fact you’re infecting more people.”

Dr. Saad said preliminary data shows current vaccines shows they protect against the Omicron variant but better protection is provided after a booster shot.

“We are pushing for boosters as much as possible,” he said.

While there haven’t been any Omicron cases locally, he said there have been in the province. Musyj recommended that those eligible for booster shots can sign up at www.wevax.ca, adding there has been “good uptake” at the Devonshire Mall and at participating pharmacies for children ages 5-11.

“If you are still just getting your first dose period, you can walk right in,” he said. “If you are (adults) getting your first or second dose, you can walk right in.”

Those getting boosters or in the 5-11 age group should book appointments, Musyj added.

“We really appreciate the community’s support in vaccination efforts and all of our efforts for that matter,” he stated.

Amherstburg Coast Guard highlighted as part of presentation to Military Institute of Windsor

The local Canadian Coast Guard base and operations around the country were profiled in a recent presentation to the Military Institute of Windsor (MIW).

Irene Barriault, commanding officer at the Canadian Coast Guard base in Amherstburg, spoke at an MIW luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 594 and went over the role of the Coast Guard and her role as well. She explained the Canadian Coast Guard is a special operating agency of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and has the responsibility of maintaining the safety, security and accessibility of Canadian waterways.

“Search and rescue, that is my passion,” said Barriault. “I hope I never leave this (job) because I am so passionate about helping other Canadians.”

The primary objective of a search and rescue station is to prevent loss of life and injury, which includes responding to and aiding activities using public and private resources and, where possible, take reasonable efforts to minimize further damage or loss of property.

“Our number one priority is saving lives,” she stated. “We are not a salvage company.”

Vessels come second, she noted, but they have a particular interest in ensuring there are no negative environmental issues from a vessel in distress. The

Canadian Coast Guard also assists with humanitarian incidents, including evacuating people with medical issues from their boats.

Some humanitarian calls may be looked after by other agencies, she noted.

“We’ll still be there but we may not be in charge,” said Barriault.

There are nine 47-foot lifeboats on the Great Lakes, said Barriault, with other tools at their disposal including fast rescue crafts, inshore rescue boats and a team of personnel qualified to assist at various calls. The Amherstburg base typically responds to calls as far as Erieau and up through Lake St. Clair.

Amherstburg, Kingston and Port Dover do a large portion of calls on the water, she indicated.

“Search and rescue is the authority of the Department of National Defense,” she added, with the Coast Guard taking care of the maritime side of things.

The Canadian Coast Guard also teams with other agencies with smaller groups helping to act as auxiliary members. One such group is the Colchester Guardian.

“They get training as we get training,” said Barriault.

If there is an emergency call, people need to be able to identify their position and the number of people on board.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo and Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche were on hand to assist and DiCarlo stated while it is heartwarming to be able to give back to the community, it is also sad to see there is still such a need.

“It pretty much speaks for itself with all of the people coming out,” he said. “We’re experiencing bigger numbers this year. Sadly, there are still a lot of people in need.”

Former House of Shalom building designated, mainly positive reviews for “The Lofts at St. Anthony”

By Ron Giofu The building that used to house St. Anthony’s School and later the House of Shalom Youth Centre has been declared heritage with the new plans for it gaining positive reviews.

The building will be converted into “The Lofts at St. Anthony,” a fourstorey residential development.

A delegation from the Rosati Group and Jackie Lassaline from Lassaline Planning Consultants Inc. appeared at both the heritage committee and town council over the past week.

As part of the heritage committee meeting, Lassaline went over the history of the building at 247 Brock St., including its origins as St. Anthony’s Catholic School and The House of Shalom Youth Centre.

“This building has existed for 110 years,” Lassaline told the heritage committee.

Lassaline added the building, owned

by Terry Jones Realty Inc., and the firm redesigning it, the Rosati Group, embrace a heritage designation but noted the building needs to be used if it is going to be saved.

“The building needs to be active to be preserved,” she said. “In other words, use it or lose it.”

As part of a written submission to the committee, Lassaline stated: “The existing iconic Amherstburg limestone brick façade building was originally constructed (in) 1911 as a four room schoolhouse operated as St. Anthony’s Catholic School. The school was active from 1911 until 1971 when it closed as a school and was purchased for use as a youth centre operating under the name of ‘House of Shalom’.”

The House of Shalom Centre has been re-branded as The House Youth Centre and moved from the building in 2020.

It is now located in the Amherstburg Community Hub. The present owner of the building, Jones Realty Inc, is proposing the adaptive re-use of the existing 110-year-old building into a 16-unit

residential condominium building referred to as The Lofts at St. Anthony.

The intent is to preserve the heritage and conserve the fine elements of the building that defines the heritage building,” said Lassaline.

Lassaline added “there will be site amenities to compliment the adaptive re-use of the heritage building including significant landscaping, a 10-car garage, 22 parking spaces, four main floor units with patios while the upper floors complimented with balconies enclosed with black railings, and the inclusion of an elevator for accessibility.”

The balconies are removable and wouldn’t have an adverse impact on the limestone exterior, Lassaline stated.

There are four units proposed for each storey, including fourth-floor loft units which would have dormers created to accommodate them. Those dormers drew some concern from heritage committee members but many were appeased when learning the exterior of them are planned to be the same colour of the roof so they will blend in more.

Committee member Stephanie Pouget-Papak indicated early in the meeting she “wasn’t too keen” on the dormers but added later “the more I look at it, the more I like it.” Colleague Robert Honor added he was fine with the indication they would blend in with the rest of the roof.

“There are a lot of positive attributes with the design,” added PougetPapak, praising work to save flooring and original archways in interior doorways.

The addition of an elevator structure was the bone of contention at the heritage committee level. While members approved of the majority of the design, different options for the addition that will house the elevator will be brought back to the committee. Vice chair Shirley Curson-Prue believed it was “a big hiccup” and that a decision couldn’t be made until more options for the elevator building were shown.

Some discussion focused on which end of the building it should go on but

committee members settled for what was proposed, leaving it on the east side of the building.

The design was proposed to provide a contrast with the main portion of the building.

The materials used in creation of the elevator addition was a point of concern with some suggestions coming in by Tony Rosati from the Rosati Group as well as council liaison to the committee Councillor Patricia Simone suggesting a decorative art piece or a mural.

Heritage planner Clint Robertson said the changes to the building were tough to decide on.

“It’s about striking a balance,” he said. “Do I think the changes are significant and significantly change the building? I do. Do I think they are acceptable? I do.”

At Monday night’s council meeting, council approved the heritage designation all the while speaking favourably of the project. Lassaline outlined it while saying they had good meetings with the heritage committee, she again pointed out they are trying to preserve many interior features as well.

Simone said Monday night “it’s a very exciting design” and she believes it will have a positive impact on the town. Councillor Michael Prue added “I like everything I see except the elevator,” believing it dwarfs the main part of the building. Prue questioned whether it could be reduced and Rosati noted it houses not just an elevator, but a staircase as well.

Prue also asked about a potential phase two, with Rosati noting that and a garage for Phase 1 would complement the first phase and the surrounding neighbourhood.

“I like the look of the building, I like what is being proposed,” added Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche.

Meloche did question the number of indoor parking spots versus the number of outdoor spots.

“Overall, a job well done,” added Councillor Marc Renaud. “I think it will be good for the community.”

Councillor Peter Courtney offered kudos as well, adding “I think this is great for our community.”

“I think its beautiful and a wonderful compromise from where we started,” added Mayor Aldo DiCarlo.

Petition calls for indoor and outdoor pickleball courts in Amherstburg

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Indoor Sports Association (AISP) wants more pickleball courts in town and has created a petition to make that happen.

An online petition is circulating on Change.org and it is asking town council to create an annex at the Libro Centre for pickleball as well as courts for volleyball, basketball, tennis and badminton. They are also hoping to have additional courts created outside the Libro Centre and/or at Malden Centre Park. The latter park is where much of the local pickleball action takes place.

Jennifer Brauss, a member of the AISA, said many of the courts in Malden are “horrible” as they are full of potholes and cracks. She believes many of the existing tennis courts could easily be converted into pickleball courts.

Brauss estimated there could be 10-12 courts constructed at Malden Centre Park, noting a pickleball court is about one-third the size of a tennis court.

She added the AISA would like to attract national tournaments to Amherstburg but they need at least ten good courts to qualify for major events.

If national tournaments were able to be played in Amherstburg, the town would benefit through sports tourism, she added. Revitilatzing courts at Malden Centre Park is also a “gateway to the wineries” in the area.

“We need an indoor court badly,” Brauss added. “We are the only place locally without one.”

The petition states that user fees will be kept in Amherstburg, provide a “valuable asset” to the town for tourism and relocation decisions and states “all capital and operational expenses will be fully covered by user fees and advertising revenue with no funding requirements from the residents of Amherstburg.”

Brauss added they are enthused that physical education students from neighbouring Malden Central Public School are also learning about pickleball and

teaching their classmates.

“We need to introduce kids to the sport,” she said.

“It’s such an efficient use of space.”

The AISA plans on appearing before Amherstburg town council in January to present its petition. The petition also reads that there are over 180 active pickleball players in town and asks that pickleball courts be prioritized “as the sport can be played by people of all ages with or without an athletic background including those with disabilities and other health issues.”

Lady Gens keep busy with pair of games on the ice over the past week

The General Amherst Lady Gens were busy on the ice with a pair of home games over the past week.

The first game of the week was last Wednesday against the St. Joseph Lasers. After the visitors picked up a first period goal, Sam Connell tied it in the second period. The two teams could not break the tie, but had opportunities.

One of those opportunities came with just 12.5 seconds left in the third period when St. Joseph broke in on a two-on-one but were denied by General Amherst goalie Carsyn Atkinson.

“I thought we played a great game,” said Atkinson.

“It didn't go the way we wanted. We worked hard and had fun.”

Atkinson said she is enjoying being part of the team, as she is in Grade 9, and she added she likes her teammates.

Claire Schipper believed they did a good job and tried hard but they have to work on their passing. She added they should be skating a bit harder but believes they are getting better each game.

“I think every game we've improved a lot,” said

Schipper. “We learned how we all can play.”

Head coach Dan Pettypiece said they had two goals called back against the Lasers but was happy the Lady Gens didn't dwell on that and bounced back quickly.

“You have to move forward after that,” said Pettypiece. “I'm glad they didn't respond negatively to those situations.”

Pettypiece added they are learning every game and “their effort is there.”

“As coaches, you can only ask for that,” said Pettypiece.

The Lady Gens had a full lineup against St. Joseph for the first time this year but were missing key players against Kingsville, Monday's opponent. Pettypiece said after Wednesday's game they still make low percentage plays and the coaches want them to take their time and not rush with the puck. He acknowledged there are still players getting used to high school hockey.

The Lady Gens fell 5-0 to Kingsville Monday at the Libro Centre. Due to injury, illness and work

commitments, they could only ice eight players.

Pettypiece said he was proud of the girls as they didn't give up and told them of the history of the program when they faced similar situations.

“I'll remember this game,” he said. “The effort and battle were there. That's all you can ask for.”

Pettypiece said he was proud of the girls and teammates Skyler Dion and Danica Barron both were happy with the effort, despite the score. They said it was tiring as they could only get off the ice every third shift.

“We worked hard and didn't give up,” said Barron.

“We gave it a 100 per cent team effort.”

“We played really well as a team,” added Dion Dion added newer players like themselves have been welcomed on the team by the older players.

That was the Lady Gens' final game before the Christmas break. They resume with a road game against Holy Names Jan. 4. They are currently 1-3-1 on the season.

Admirals outscored 13-4 in back-to-back losses

Suspensions and injuries continue to play havoc on the Integrity Amherstburg Admirals as they have now lost four of their past five games.

Sunday night at home at the Libro Centre, the hosts were hammered 7-2 by the undefeated Lakeshore Canadiens who outshot the Admirals by a whopping 5417 including 19-1 in the first period.

“We have to get back to basics and keep the game simple,” said Admirals’ assistant coach Eric Shaw.

Combined with a 6-2 loss to host Dresden Kings on Friday night, the locals dip below the .500 mark after 20 games into the 32-game schedule. They will take their 9-10-0-1 record into Wheatley on Wednesday against the Sharks.

“After seeing something like that (Friday’s loss) you’d like to see a better effort but obviously we didn’t get it. It will be a big practice on Tuesday,” noted Shaw.

With Tylor Fraser and Kolton Couvillon out on suspensions and Colton Candido and Connor Demelo on the injured list, the Admirals were forced to go with five defencemen against Lakeshore and opted to move rookie blueliner Jadyn Brown up to forward.

“We are banged up and have a few guys on suspension. We have a few guys who can play up and down in the lineup. We liked what we saw from him (Brown) in practice so we put him up there. I thought he played well,” said Shaw.

The Canadiens, who were led by Eric Bisson’s twogoal performance, led 2-0 after 20 minutes and were ahead 5-0 after the second intermission. In the third period, Amherstburg’s Mitchell Demelo scored his fifth of the season and Brendon Gouin, recently acquired from the Essex 73’s, got his first as an Admiral.

Shaw admits that there could be a juggle of who plays alongside who as the Admirals try and get back on the winning trek.

“After a couple of tough losses, something has to change.”

In Dresden, the host Kings scored just 2:25 into the game and dominated all night. Andrew Clark and Max Clifford scored for the visitors.

Amherstburg Firefighters Association holds toy drive to assist families in need

The Amherstburg Firefighters Association has once again stepped up to help local families in need at Christmas.

The association has held its annual “Stuffa-Fire Truck” toy drive with firefighters Brian Lowe, Brad Renaud, Kristi Meloche and Dan Monk loading up a fire truck and another fire department vehicle with toys last Thursday evening. After leaving from

Amherstburg fire station #1 on Sandwich St. S., the firefighter association members picked up toys at Joe Meloche Ford Sales, Movati Athletic, Canadian Tire, Capri Pizza, and the Amherstburg Health Care Centre. Additional stops were made over the weekend including at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and at Shooters Roadhouse where people were also invited to drop off unwrapped toys.

Renaud said there have been 39 families and 97 children registered to receive toys this year. All are from Amherstburg, he pointed out.

“We put it on the fire department’s website,” said Lowe. “They just read that and responded from there.”

Origins of the toy drive go back several years, with the firefighters recalling when it was done as part of the annual Goodfellows drive while also recalling now-retired firefighter Mark Stock took it over when the toy drive became separate from the Goodfellows campaign.

“The torch kept getting passed on,” said Lowe.

They will be distributed at Station #1 with families being contacted about when they can pick them up. After the toys are sorted by firefighters and other volunteers, Renaud noted the distribution is usually done at night and as privately as they can in order to let those in need obtain them without a lot of people noticing.

“Handing the toys to the families is the best thing,” said Lowe. “You see the relief in their faces.”

“A lot of them are emotional,” added Lowe.

Emergency calls can range from vessels on fire, vessels running aground or disabled, capsized vessels, disoriented vessels, people overboard or medical emergencies.

When the Coast Guard responds to a vessel on fire, their goal is to save the people on the boat.

“We’re definitely not firefighters but we’ll save you no matter what,” she said.

Barriault added the Canadian Coast Guard is not a tow service and will try and direct the business to a salvage company.

However, she added they will help if needed in those situations.

Barriault’s Coast Guard career started in 2012, when she joined the Search and Rescue unit as a leading seaman/ rescue specialist. After six years, she became a search and rescue training officer and chief instructor for the Great Lakes sector.

Barriault is also an approved Transport Canada small vessel operator proficiency and small domestic vessel – basic safety instructor. She is also a Coast Guard rigid hull inflatable operator training and coastal search and rescue instructor.

Barriault achieved her Transport Canada Master 150T domestic license in 2019 and returned to search and rescue operations as commanding officer for the Great Lakes sector, where she is currently stationed as “A Crew” captain.

St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School welcomes prospective students at virtual open house

By Ron Giofu St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School is welcoming incoming students, though had to greet them virtually again this year.

Grade 8 students from feeder schools as well as nonfeeder schools were welcomed to the online open house, streamed at www.villanovawildcats.ca. It is the second straight year that Villanova has had to go that route due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“While this pandemic may change the way we do our open house, it has not changed the way our staff continues to do the amazing work they do to make St. Thomas of Villanova our students’ home away from home for the next four years,” said principal Laura Beltran.

Beltran said students already attending feeder schools, which are the nearby schools within the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB), can view their transition to high school as a continuation of their Catholic-based education.

Students and parents from non-feeder schools “need not worry,” said Beltran.

“You can be assured that your children will be warmly embraced by a very welcoming community, one that values the fact you have entrusted your most precious gifts with us,” she said.

Beltran said Villanova supports the whole student “in heart, mind and body.” She added there is nothing more important than the students’ safety and happiness.

Student success at Villanova was also touted by its principal, as Beltran noted students do very well in EQAO math and literacy testing. She added 600 students in Grades 10-12 were recognized for achieving honour roll status.

“The thing I’m most proud of is the culture and community here at Villanova,” Beltran added. “Not only do you want your children to be developed academically and physically, you want them to be good, socially-conscious citizens of the world. This is the place where that

can happen.”

Beltran said she is “amazed” at the students and staff for their efforts on a daily basis.

“Villanova is a destination school, one that others want to emulate,” said Beltran.

There are two academies at Villanova – STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and a hockey academy – as well as other “robust” programs offered at the area’s Catholic high school. She said they look forward to welcoming many new Wildcats next September.

“Welcome to Villanova and I hope you have a great year,” added Frank DiTomasso, the Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee for the WECDSB. Chris Lanoue, chair of the Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC), said St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School has a lot to offer.

“What an amazing choice you are making by coming here,” Lanoue said in his pre-recorded video. “Villanova truly has something for everyone from athletics to bands and plays to robotics, chess and science Olympiads. No matter what, you can find a home here at Villanova.”

Lanoue said there are also opportunities for parents as they can volunteer within the school including joining the CSAC. “Congratulations on choosing an amazing high school – one that can help you be the best version of you that you can be.”
