Squirettes, McGregor K of C serve 1,000 meals By Ron Giofu
A holiday tradition returned to McGregor and resulted in a lot of people getting fed. The Squirettes of Mary Circle #1001, a youth organization based out of McGregor, and the Knights of Columbus Council #2844 presented the event late Sunday afternoon at the McGregor Columbian Club. The Squirettes served the meal with the McGregor K of C helping to cover the costs that hadn’t already been taken care of by donations. “It’s been great. It’s been very smooth,” said Laura Belanger, chief counsellor for the Squirettes of Mary. “We booked 1,000 meals. That’s our record. In 25 years, this is our biggest (meal).” The previous record was 720 meals, set last year. Belanger said some of the stories they heard when booking meals were heartbreaking. People were served in a drive-thru fashion, with some ordering ten or more dinners for their families. “There has always been a need but this year, but this year I think it’s greater this year,” said Belanger. Belanger added the word is out that the food they serve is “fantastic” and that helps bring people out. She said there were names she didn’t recognize ordering food and orders were coming in from around the region. “There is a lot of local people, too,” she said. “You never can tell.” The Squirettes and K of C also delivered meals in the Amherstburg, McGregor, River Canard and Essex areas. “There are a lot of people who can’t get out of their homes to have a great meal,” said Belanger. “We want to ensure everyone gets a great Christmas dinner.” Getting to 1,000 meals was a goal for the Squirettes of Mary Circle #1001 and it was a community service project for them. Belanger said it has never been a fundraiser, but donations are accepted to try and break even. The youth organization simply wants to make sure everyone gets a Christmas meal.
