County of Essex passes its 2022 budget By Ron Giofu

The County of Essex has passed its 2022 budget and it calls for a 1.56 per cent increase to their portion of residential tax bills. “We all know budgets are not drawn up over a weekend. This has been due diligence for the better part of the last four or five months,” said Warden Gary McNamara in thanking county administration. “This is a budget that meets the requirements in all of our communities. It’s certainly a very thoughtful budget that doesn’t reduce levels of services, it continues to build on the good services

we’re proud to deliver. Our citizens deserve it.” The County of Essex entered last Wednesday’s virtual budget meeting looking at a 1.73 per cent increase via a $116.5-million budget but was able to drop the overall total to the 1.56 per cent. The 1.56 per cent translates into an additional $7.61 for every $100,000 of assessment, bringing the county portion of municipal taxes to $497.04. The 2022 budget boosts staffing levels at Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Sun Parlor Home in Leamington, as well as enhancing

supportive housing and setting aside funds for the new hospital system. In all, funding was approved for 12 new paramedics and Essex County council also earmarked $6.36 million towards the county’s $100-million commitment towards the construction of the new $2-billion mega-hospital planned for the corner of County Road 42 and Concession 9. The overall total set aside to this point for the new regional hospital, including the 2022 budgeted amount, is approximately $31 million. The hiring of 12 additional paramedics

for Essex-Windsor EMS, was attributed to the work they have shouldered due to additional responsibilities from to the COVID-19 pandemic. The service helped launch mass vaccination sites in Amherstburg and Leamington in 2021. Paramedics also unfailingly answered the call to provide COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at pop-up clinics across Windsor-Essex. Systemic issues resulting in long waits to unload ambulances at local hospitals added to the pressures faced by Essex-Windsor EMS over the course of the past year. Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce

Tower on Boblo Island comes down A famed local landmark is no more as the tower on Boblo Island was taken down last Thursday. Some residents reported a crash as the tower hit the ground in a controlled demolition. The tower was originally put up during the island’s days as an amusement park, however, work continues to convert the island into a resort community.
