Operational budget debated, tax increase 3.11%

RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU Town council concluded deliberations on the 2022 operating budget last Thursday evening and arrived at a 3.11 per cent tax increase for residents. The town’s capital budget will be tabled Feb. 14 and that budget will be funded largely from reserves.

By Ron Giofu Amherstburg town council has approved its operational budget in principle, with residents now looking at a 3.11 per cent increase to the municipal share. Town council wrapped up two days of budget deliberations held virtually last Wednesday and Thursday and arrived at the 3.11 per cent figure, down from the original 3.35 per cent they entered deliberations at. There is still the capital budget to be deliberated, with that scheduled to be tabled Feb. 14, the same night the operational budget is scheduled to come up for final approval. The capital budget projects to be proposed will be financed largely with transfers from reserves. “I am pleased with the collaborative efforts of

council and administration in the preparation and review of this year’s budget,” said Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “This budget supports the programs and services residents receive. I believe our trajectory is right on course as we continue to work towards reducing debt and increasing contributions to reserves.” DiCarlo thanked council and administration for its work on the budgets, noting that it has been a “difficult year” to get through the process. The town maintains that if its share of the property tax bills containing the 3.11 per cent tax rate increase is combined with county and education rates, the overall impact to property taxes is lowered to 2.36 per cent, or $116.46 on a home with an MPAC assessment of $300,000.

Councillor Peter Courtney said the town has to follow a plan and also have a deficit to replace and refurbish its assets. He noted there is good news, such as an increase in OCIF funding that can be used towards capital projects. He added residents haven’t been able to use services due to COVID-19 shutdowns and that has resulted in surpluses, and he called for a report to come on how the town has been impacted due to the pandemic. Courtney said “we’re trying to show the residents that we’re trying to be fiscally responsible” but at the same time trying to show compassion in that people have lost their jobs or have been negatively impacted otherwise. He noted other municipalities have come in with increases around two per cent. Continued on Page 2
