Province OK’s long-term care beds By Ron Giofu The Ontario government has approved the beds for a new long-term care home in Amherstburg. As part of announcements that included new long-term care beds in Windsor as well, Minister of Long-Term Care Paul Calandra confirmed the Amherstburg development will have a total of 160 beds comprising 101 new beds and 59 upgraded beds. Arch Corporation owns the land next to the Amherstburg Community Hub on Richmond St. and will be moving its Chateau Park Long-Term Care Home from Windsor to Amherstburg. Minister of Long-Term Care Paul Calandra made the announcement last Thursday afternoon and said the provincial government is 76 per cent of the way towards its goal of having 30,000 new or upgraded long-term care by 2028. The new long-term care home will be a $45 million investment, said Calandra. He added the start of construction is anticipated for Fall 2023. “It is the staff that makes it a home,” added Calandra, stating the province’s pledge of four hours of care per day for
a patient. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said the Town of Amherstburg is “delighted” to welcome the new long-term care beds to town and it addresses the need for accessible beds and the desire for people to stay closer to home. “The addition of 160 long-term care beds supports our goal to provide an inclusive and caring community for our aging population,” said DiCarlo. “Most importantly, this added accommodation in our town will increase the opportunity for residents to stay close and connected to their family members who require this level of care and continue to enjoy all the attributes of our community.” DiCarlo thanked Calandra for recognizing the need for long-term care in Ontario and “acting upon this need and including Amherstburg in your plans to meet this growing demand.” He added the town’s thanks to Arch Corporation for including the town in its investment plans. “In you, we will trust our most beloved treasures – our families,” said DiCarlo.

Peter Simmons
New CAO hired By Ron Giofu
The Town of Amherstburg has its new chief administrative officer (CAO). Peter Simmons, described by the town in a media release as “a seasoned CAO,” has accepted the position and began his transition with the town Tuesday. He won’t officially become the CAO until town council passes a CAO appointment bylaw as part of the Feb. 28 regular council meeting. His appointment comes after a “rigorous, months-long process” that began in November. “In general terms, he met all of the requirements and the attributes the hiring committee was looking for,” said Mayor Aldo DiCarlo.
