Natural gas project announced for Boblo Island By Ron Giofu Natural gas services will be expanding to Boblo Island thanks to funding from the provincial government. Minister of Energy Todd Smith was in Amherstburg Friday afternoon for the announcement, which will see more than $1.9 million allocated to connect homes on the island to natural gas. He was joined for the announcement by representatives of Enbridge Gas as well as members of town council and administration. “One of the promises we made during the election campaign was to make life more affordable for Ontarians,” said Smith. “We are delivering on our promise to make life affordable for families and businesses including Boblo Island.” Switching to natural gas will have substantial savings, Smith predicted, estimating it at $1,500 per year per household.
Heading down the hill!
“This is a significant investment in the local community and it’s part of our government’s plan to lower energy costs and make life more affordable for local families,” said Smith. “With Phase 2 of the natural gas expansion program, we’re putting people first, bringing prosperity to their communities and ensuring Ontario remains open for business.” The current phase of the program sees more than $234 million put towards supporting approximately 8,750 connections in 43 rural, northern and Indigenous communities. There are 28 projects in all with all of them expected to be under construction by the end of 2025. Smith called the funding “a boon for small and rural communities,” and noted 200 applied for it. The interest may lead to a third phase of the program, he indicated.
