Animal hospital taking services on the road

By Fred Groves Since the pandemic began there has been a drastic increase in the number of pets that are being adopted. And that means that the men and women who work as veterinarians and technicians are busier and for at least one local Animal Hospital, it has meant having to adapt the way in which they deliver their services. Beginning January 31, Dr. Beth Cozens and Dr. Kim Quinn, owners and veterinarians at the Fort Malden Animal Hospital on Sandwich Street in Amherstburg will be making house calls.

According to the two, the hospital has recently been granted a special status, a mobile clinic, by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, the governing group that oversees all clinics. “We have outgrown this building. We only have two examining rooms, and we can easily use four,” says Dr. Cozens. While plans are in the works to expand the building and add much more needed space, Fort Malden Animal Hospital has decided that for two days a week, Monday and Tuesday, they will pack up a special mobile kit, that Dr. Cozens likes to refer as a “tool box,” and visit their furry clients in their

own homes. “Cats that are stressed don’t have to be put into a box or a cage now,” she noted of the convenience. There still are many services in which pet owners will have to bring their pets into the clinic such as surgery and long-term care but, according to Dr. Quinn the mobile clinic will assist some elderly pet owners who might now want to make the trip to the hospital. “Maybe they have a wound that needs antibiotic. We can go out and examine the animal,” explains Dr. Quinn.
