Amherstburg not moving forward in Ontario Job Site Challenge By Ron Giofu Amherstburg will not be participating in a provincial program that would aid municipalities in getting industrial lands marketed. The town’s application under the Ontario Job Site Challenge for the Amherstburg Land Holdings property, otherwise known as the Honeywell lands, has been turned down. An application for lands near Howard Ave. – a.k.a. the Howard Industrial Lands – was selected to move to the next phase but complexities with that application will result in it not proceeding either. According to a report from director of planning and development services Nicole Rubli, the Howard Industrial Lands is comprised to over 500 acres with multiple properties that includes over 30 different property owners. Rubli stated that to comply with a Request for Information (RFI), “a significant amount of consultation would be required and would include but not be limited to private landowners, public utilities, Indigenous community, County of Essex and the Essex Region Conservation Authority. In addition, considerable research would be required to ascertain if there are on-site infrastructure or impediments, to identify and provide easements or right-of-way descriptions, utility barriers and capacity.” Rubli stated having “shovel ready sites” would require “a significant financial commitment” and that moving forward with the Job Site Challenge for Howard Industrial Lands is not recommended at this time. The site was allowed to move forward, based on a letter from David Barnes, assistant deputy minister with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade regarding the Howard Industrial Lands. Another letter from Barnes regarding the Amherstburg Land Holdings properties did not allow any further progress, as it read: “While your application
