“Elaine’s First 100K Ride” raises funds for MS

By Ron Giofu An area woman with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) was part of a group of cyclists raising money in the fight against the disease over the weekend.

And it all started a few months ago with a chance meeting on a coffee shop patio.

“Elaine’s First 100K Ride” was held Saturday morning with a group of about 30 cyclists riding twice be-

tween the Vollmer Centre in LaSalle and Downtown Espresso in Amherstburg. The ride was in honour of Elaine Richardson, who has battled MS for the past decade. Proceeds will benefit the MS Society.

Richardson was also part of the ride, which raised over $5,000 as of last Saturday morning.

“I’m overwhelmed with the support,” said Richardson. “I was going to do a bike ride on my own with my husband following in the car.”

Richardson and her husband Steve live in Windsor but she said they frequent Amherstburg regularly and were having a coffee on the patio of Downtown Espresso recently when they met Mike Benard from the group known as The Social Bike Riders, the latter being affiliated with City Cyclery Inc. What began as an idea for a bicycle ride on county roads by herself grew into what occurred last Saturday.

Town moving forward with sewer project after receiving grant

By Ron Giofu Amherstburg town council has authorized administration to move forward with sanitary sewer projects on two streets after receiving a grant.

The town has received funding under the provincial and federal program known as the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Green Stream and will move forward with sanitary sewer projects for George St. and Seymour St. Town council approved the capital expenditure not to exceed $2,337,500 including net HST, including a 2021 over-expenditure not to exceed $100,000 and a pre-commitment not to exceed $2,237,500 for future budget years. The town’s funding will come via a transfer from the wastewater reserve.

Administration was also authorized to enter into a transfer payment agreement with the Minister of Infrastructure for funding of up to $1,714,088.75 toward reconstruction of the two projects at a total project cost not to exceed $2,337,500 including net HST. According to a report from treasurer Justin Rousseau, “the project will replace and reconstruct the sanitary sewer system on George St, (Richmond to Simcoe) and Seymour St. (Richmond to Simcoe), in the Town’s historic core.

The existing sewers on George and Seymour Streets are vitrified clay pipes and sewers and are believed to have been installed in the 1930s or earlier. The work will involve installing approximately 900 metres of sanitary sewer and collection lines, and replacing manholes.”

Rousseau added: “The work will also involve asphalt restoration of the affected roadway.”

The project will include reconstruction of aging sanitary sewers and the reduction of maintenance costs, the reduction of groundwater and stormwater infiltration into the town’s sewer systems, the reduction possibility of sanitary bypass to the Detroit River and the reduction of flow to the Amherstburg wastewater

treatment plant.

The project must be completed on or before October 31, 2026, he added. It was learned at a special meeting of council Monday night that engineering will take place this year and into 2022. Construction is possible in 2022 but is more likely to occur in 2023.

“On review of the state of infrastructure in the recommended project area, administration has determined that additional works would be beneficial to renew other infrastructure assets while the work is being undertaken on the recommended project. The coordination of projects for infrastructure renewal is consistent with Town policy as it seeks to obtain the best value for the investment. The additional works are expected to include replacement of watermains and a section of storm sewer, new sidewalks and asphalt replacement,” Rousseau wrote. “The additional works would be included in the Request for Proposal (RFP) to be considered in the engineering design. The additional works are outside of the scope of the ICIP funded project and are not included in the financial impacts outlined in this report. Recommendations for capital expenditures to complete the additional works and related funding sources will be brought forward in future budgets based on project design recommendations.”

Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche noted there have been recent projects where additional costs were incurred after crews opened the roadways and found other issues. He wondered if the same could occur for this project.

“Is this project all inclusive?” he asked.

CAO John Miceli responded by stating the town has provisions for contingencies on capital projects.

Councillor Michael Prue had questions on how the project was budgeted, with a new council to be in place in 2023. Director of corporate services Cheryl Horrobin noted it is funded through wastewater rates with Prue adding he favoured the deal, as the town got a “good deal” at 27 cents on the dollar.

It was her first time riding in such a large group, Richardson added.

Richardson said she was first diagnosed with MS about ten years ago.

“I didn’t think I would be walking at this point,” she said.

Noting she did an MS ride in 2019, she said she wanted to do something this year as well after having taken a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These guys just took it on and it has become amazing,” she said.

Benard said he spoke with Richardson and agreed that it just took off.

“I just met Elaine and Steve here having a coffee,” he said.

After circulating news of what they wanted to do on social media, things grew and the ride was organized.

Ages of the riders spanned from 15-years-old to about 65-years-old.

Local business owners adding new building to portfolio

Local museums re-opening to the general public

Saying “thank you” to people is never a bad thing

I was able to view the video of the most recent meeting of Essex County council and it reminded me that I should be one of the many that is thanking our first responders once again. A visit to the closing of the field hospital turned vaccination centre at St. Clair College was yet another reminder.

As I hope we are entering the home stretch of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting there are still public health restrictions in place albeit fewer of them these days, it is never Ron Giofu a bad time to say thank you to those who have worked through the pandemic.

The county council meeting saw an update provided by Essex-Windsor EMS chief Bruce Krauter. He spoke about call volumes, fatigue, constant donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the many other factors his staff has had to endure.

“Plain and simple, staff are tired,” Krauter told members of county council and anyone who was watching the meeting online or via Your TV (Cable 11).

Of this, I have no doubt. Being a paramedic is a job that I greatly respect and I admire those who get into that profession and stick with it. I would imagine that it is a stressful job at the best of times so I am grateful for their efforts in the worst of times, such as the pandemic.

I should point out that I am certain there are many rewarding times as well, so I would encourage young people searching for a career to look into that career if they have any interest. Paramedics help people on a daily basis so I applaud their efforts and hope others follow in their footsteps!

The same holds true for doctors, nurses, personal support workers, and everyone who cares for people whether it be in a regular hospital, a field hospital, a clinic, a long-term care or retirement facility and any other location they may be working in. These positions are also crucial to the well-being of people and their efforts became all the more important when the pandemic hit.

I’m sure people working in those fields are fatigued as well. The words “unprecedented times” has been used often in the last 15 months or so, and for good reason. Thank you to those in these professions and additional thanks to those entering these fields. There are high school and university graduates who see the need and are willing to fill it, so they need to be thanked as well.

Since I’m handing out kudos, small business owners and restaurants need to be thanked as well. Many have gone through tough times navigating closures, partial re-openings and revenue losses. Sadly, some haven’t made it. To those who are trying to get back on their feet now, I wish you the best.

Retail staff in other business who were able to remain open also had to endure some hardships and inconvenience. I have friends who worried about getting the virus through the course of their day-to-day employment and have had to deal with other issues as well, including cranky customers when products were delayed in shipping due to the pandemic and the general managing of conditions and health guidelines imposed by the province due to the pandemic.

I feel that I’ve written similar columns like this in the past, but I decided to write another one after some of the events and meetings I have been covering.

Like my media colleagues, I too have worked during the pandemic and have seen and heard what people are experiencing. Giving them an extra “thank you” or two never hurts. The days when I don’t have to type the words “ongoing COVID-19 pandemic” can’t come soon enough so I am grateful to those who have helped us through what we have experienced so far.

JUST A THOUGHT

A pair of Amherstburg museums have re-opened their doors now that provincial COVID-19 health guidelines allow them to.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum re-opened its doors Tuesday and is welcoming visitors to return to the museum following their new safety protocols.

Admission is by appointment only, according to a news release from curator/administrator Mary-Katherine Whelan, and must be booked by calling the museum at 519-736-5433 or 1-800-713-6336. “We require visitors to provide their name and contact information when tours are booked for contact tracing if necessary,” she stated.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum has 50-minute timed slots which will be available from 12-5 p.m.

Tuesday-Friday, and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Time slots can have no more than 10 people per slot, and the museum will not be offering group tours of over 10 people at this time.

The museum will also provide masks, and hand sanitizer upon entry and throughout a person’s visit. “The safety of both visitors and staff is our top priority. Scheduled cleaning of touch points and washrooms will take place between visits,” she added.

Interactive components have temporarily been removed. Donations, gift shop purchases, and ticket purchases may be made with credit card or debit whenever possible.

“The Amherstburg Freedom Museum would like to thank our supporters for their patience as we re-open, and to check out our Facebook page and website to read more about our re-entry protocols (https://amherstburgfreedom.org/covid/),” Whelan stated. “We can’t wait to see you and share our collections in a safe and responsible way!”

The Park House Museum is also back open to the public.

“We are ecstatic to be open again,” said curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak. “We are letting one group - maximum of up to five people - to tour at once. Appointments are no longer required at this time, but visitors are required to fill out a COVID-19 screening form (as per provincial regulations); this can be completed on site (paper format) or online in advance, and the Google form link is on our website’s main page and via QR code at the museum.”

Pouget-Papak stated the main floor tours are self-guided and there are audio interpretations for each room that can be accessed via QR code with cellphones. Wi-Fi is available, she pointed out.

There is also a printed guide for those without cellphone access, she added.

“We have staff on-site who are eager to answer any tour content questions. On weekends, weather permitting, we are offering limited hands-on tinsmithing activities that follow social distancing protocols, sanitization, and tool sanitization between participants,” Pouget-Papak said. “We are communicating any changes to programming, times, or protocols by posting to our social media accounts.”

In addition, Pouget-Papak stated they have unlocked box two of their “history detective” series and are giving free online access to that box Aug. 7.

“Admission and membership fees remain the same as in 2019, and we are honouring our 2020 (rates) until Dec. 31, 2021,” she said.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum is located at 277 King St. while the Park House Museum is at 214 Dalhousie St.

Rotary Club of Amherstburg officially inducts its new president

Though technically the changing of the Rotary president comes July 1, the local service club held an induction ceremony for new president Susanne Bergeron last Wednesday evening on the patio at Wolfhead Distillery. She takes over from John Sutton, who becomes past president.

“I’m excited for this coming year,” she stated.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit everyone, and Bergeron mentioned the Rotary Club was no exception.

“Everyone experienced COVID in different ways,” said Bergeron. “In the last year, we got a lot of things done.”

WECHU reports declining COVID-19 numbers locally, promotes vaccinations

By Ron Giofu The most recent meeting of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) board shows declining COVID-19 numbers, concern over the Delta variant and a desire for more people to get vaccinated.

The meeting, held virtually July 22, saw medical officer of health Dr. Wajid Ahmed state that while COVID-19 cases are declining in Canada, there are increases in other countries such as Spain, France and the United Kingdom. The Delta variant is driving many of the increases and the majority of the new cases in the UK and U.S. is that variant.

“If we follow the same trajectory we are seeing in other countries, Delta will be the most common variant in our country as well,” he stated.

Ahmed said despite a rise in cases in the U.K, Spain and France have not translated into the same level of hospitalizations as previous. He also stated local numbers show hospitalizations and ICU cases are dropping.

“That is one way to say the vaccines are definitely helping reduce the severity of the disease,” said Ahmed. “The majority of the cases we’re seeing in these countries are in individuals that are not fully vaccinated.”

Declining trends in COVID-19 cases are also occurring in Ontario and Windsor-Essex County.

“We continue to see a steady decline in COVID cases in our community,” he said.

Current case rates are 1.6 cases per 100,000 people, down from 2.3 cases per 100,000 people from the previous week.

“We just need to make sure we continue that trajectory and vaccinate our people,” he said.

Roughly 3,500-4,000 tests are done per day with a per cent positivity rate of 0.5 per cent.

“This is by far the lowest per cent positivity since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020,” he said.

About 74 per cent of the region’s COVID-19 cases have been in Windsor, Ahmed stated. About six per cent of the cases from June 22-July 21 were reported in

each of the municipalities of Lakeshore and Leamington with five per cent of the cases being in Tecumseh.

Four per cent were reported in Kingsville, three per cent in Essex and two per cent in Amherstburg.

WECHU continues to encourage young people to get their COVID-19 vaccinations, he added.

Approximately 50 per cent of COVID-19 acquisitions are from the community, Ahmed added, with 15.6 per cent coming from household contact. About 12.5 per cent of cases are under investigation while 9.4 per cent are attributed to both close contacts of confirmed cases and travel. Outbreaks are the cause of about 3.1 per cent of new cases, according to recent statistics.

“A reminder that when you are outside, there are ways you can still contract COVID-19,” he said.

“Taking precautions every time you are in public is something that we all have to do to ensure we are not contributing to the spread of the disease. If we are vaccinated, we are breaking the chain of transmission as well.”

According to data shown by Ahmed, Canada is leading most countries with respect to percentage of the population with at least one dose. As it relates to people with both doses, Canada has passed the United States and the U.K. and Ahmed was hopeful Canada would only trail Isreal in that regard.

Ahmed encouraged others to get their shots locally.

“We need to increase the vaccination rate,” he said.

“We have the capacity in the system. We have the vaccines available for people to get same-day appointments.”

Increased vaccination rates will ward off a fourth wave and prevent spikes in cases that have been occurring in other countries, he stated. Younger age groups are seeing a slower rate of vaccinations and Ahmed said he would like to see an upward trend of vaccinations continue in that and other age groups.

Ahmed noted that as of the board of health meeting, 75.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex County adults had at least one dose while 65.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.

“That number needs to increase,” he added. “We’d like to see at least 80 per cent of our residents fully vaccinated. If we can get to 90 per cent, that would be the ideal goal but 80 per cent would be the minimum coverage I’d like to see for our region.”

Things come full circle for Art by the River co-chair

While Candice-Rose Gagnon is a co-chair of the 54th Art by the River event, it isn’t her first time helping to organize it.

The two-day arts and crafts show makes its return to Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada the weekend of Aug. 28-29 after having been cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gagnon’s own history with the event dates back several years including when she assisted a former Gibson Gallery staff member help organize it.

“I was one of the summer students hired for a number of years,” she recalled. “I watched Ann McKerrow run the show way back when.”

Gagnon said she was inspired by McKerrow’s commitment to the show and the gallery itself and that stuck with her. She has gone on to be a tourism and event planner, including working for the prestigious Scotties Tournament of Hearts curling bonspiel. She also returned to school to pursue journalism after that.

“I’m co-chairing as well as being part of the publicity side,” said Gagnon. “This is just my way of saying thank you to the organization that launched my career.”

Gagnon believes this year’s Art by the River is the only juried art festival going on in Essex County, “if not Ontario.” Even though many pandemic restrictions have been loosened, the current plan is to reduce the number of vendors on the site at Fort Malden, restrict capacity of patrons and have a one-way traffic flow around the grounds.

There will also be no live entertainment this year, nor will there be any live artists workshops and no food concessions.

Art by the River organizers are keeping a close eye on government guidelines and awaiting clarity on some issues.

“We’re trying to plan for a show that has 75-100 vendors,” she added.

The focus will be on local people, said Gagnon.

“We want to support them because they support us,” she said.

In a normal year, Art by the River has upwards of 160 vendors. Gagnon said they want to bring back some sense of normalcy and ensure people have a pleasurable and safe time while at the event. She pointed out that organizers are calling this year’s show a “back to

Town council approves bylaw to have Windsor continue fire dispatch

By Ron Giofu The Town of Amherstburg will be continuing its relationship with Windsor as it relates to fire dispatch services.

Town council passed a bylaw allowing Amherstburg to enter into a fire dispatch agreement with the City of Windsor, something fire chief Bruce Montone said has been happening since 1998. Montone stated in a report to town council that there has been only one fee for service increase since 2002, when it increased from $1.80 per capita to $1.85 per capita.

According to Montone’s report, the new agreement sees a fee increase from $1.85 per capita to $1.94 per capita effective Jan. 1, 2022, subject to a fee review each year thereafter. The agreement continues to provide the co-ordination of mutual aid activities within the County of Essex, the fire chief stated.

There is not a specific term for the current agreement, Montone stated, but includes an option for either party to terminate the agreement with three months written notice, and does not specify the particular services being provided.

“The centralization of fire dispatching services with the City for County of Essex lower-tier municipal fire services continues to grow with the recent addition of Leamington Fire Services,” stated Montone in his report. “This broad participation enhances overall interoperability among these services, thereby creating a more robust response program across Essex County.”

Amherstburg is one of five Essex County municipalities receiving fire dispatch from Windsor with the others being Leamington, Essex, Tecumseh and Lakeshore.

Councillor Michael Prue wondered why LaSalle and Kingsville did not go through Windsor. Montone said he could not say for certain, but surmised LaSalle might because it has its own dispatch system through the LaSalle Police Service. He added he didn’t know why Kingsville didn’t.

Montone said LaSalle charges $2.36 per capita for dispatch services.

“The proposed Agreement is for a non-fixed term and as the estimated annual cost for the agreement is in excess of $42,000 plus HST per year, ascribing a contract value in excess of $50,000 within the first two years and more likely over $100,000 during the life of the agreement,” Montone stated. “On that basis a Request for Tender or Request for Proposal is required under the Town’s Procurement Policy unless an exception is approved under section 24 of the Policy.”

Montone added in his report: “The City of Windsor has been an exemplary partner in the delivery of dispatch services for local Fire Services. Administration recommends that Council approve the amended Fire Dispatch Services Agreement with the Corporation of the City of Windsor.”

Police ask residents to not drive golf carts on area roadways The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment is asking that residents stay off the road if they are in a golf cart.

Police say they have received reports and complaints of people driving golf carts along roadways and in subdivisions and are asking people not to do that.

According to police, there are many Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offenses that a person could be charged with if found operating a golf cart on a roadway.

Some of these offenses could include operating a motor vehicle on a roadway with no automobile insurance (which carries a $5,000 fine), operating a motor vehicle without required equipment, operating a motor vehicle with no vehicle permit, not having an odometer, and operating a motor vehicle on a roadway with no driver’s license. The latter offense could be applicable to youth with no driver’s license, police add.

Accidents

•One driver was charged after a crash in the 6000 block of Concession 6 South July 19. A 49-year-old Essex woman was charged with turn not in safety. There were no injuries. The accident occurred around 11:56 a.m.

•A local man was charged after a two-vehicle collision in the 300 block of Dalhousie St. Police say he allegedly crossed the yellow line and struck the other vehicle. One driver suffered minor injuries, police state, and the airbags were deployed in one of the vehicles. A 25-year-old Amherstburg man was charged with failure to drive in marked lane.

It was reported July 16 around 4:57 p.m.

Car fire

There were no injuries when a vehicle caught fire while parked on the street along Richmond St. near the Sandwich St. S. intersection. Police say a female driver parked and went into a nearby store only to have her vehicle engulfed in flames a short time later. The vehicle was destroyed. It occurred July 22 around 5:50 p.m.

According to Amherstburg assistant deputy fire chief Ron Meloche, the 2011 Ford vehicle was fully involved on arrival of fire crews. Stations 1 and 2 attended, the latter due to the fire’s proximity to the building.

The building sustained exterior damage to a sign and cracked glass but the fire did not spread inside.

The roadway was closed for approximately one hour, Meloche added, and there were no injuries. Public works and environmental crews were also called in to help with the clean up after the fire.

Meloche added fire crews were dispatched afterwards to a call on Ramsay St. for an electrical pole fire, which resulted in Essex Powerlines being brought in.

Local artist selling her work as a way to raise money for Chippewa First Nations on Munsee Delaware Reserve

By Ron Giofu A local artist is selling some of her work and trying to raise money for First Nations people at the same time.

Amherstburg resident Sandy Menard will be holding an art sale on the grounds of Christ Anglican Church, where she is also a parishioner. It will be held outside, weather permitting, on the Civic Holiday, Aug. 2. She hopes that a lot of people will be downtown that day and make the short trip over to the church.

All proceeds will benefit the Chippewa First Nations on Munsee Delaware Reserve, which is located near London. Menard plans to have representation from the Indigenous community on site Aug. 2.

Essex-Windsor EMS gives update on experiences during COVID-19 pandemic

Essex-Windsor EMS chief Bruce Krauter gave an update to Essex County council on everything the service has gone through since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Krauter noted he usually gives an update mid-year but his most recent update covered the period of January 2020 to June 2021. He went over the “peaks and valleys” they have experienced during the pandemic, noting the first wave was “more of a valley.”

“Call volumes declined and the area was quiet,” he said. “Although this was a relief for EMS, the workload practices changed and became very much more intensive.”

As demands changed, Krauter said Essex-Windsor EMS (EWEMS) changed with it.

“As we navigated uncharted territory, the entire service adapted and changed to meet the needs and requirements,” he stated.

Call volumes peaked in 2018 but declined in 2019 and 2020, Krauter added. He indicated that data was different than what the service’s master plan originally predicted in 2018. That was attributed not only to the COVID-19 pandemic but the implementation of the service’s Vulnerable Patient Navigator program.

Krauter cautioned that while things slowed at the start of the pandemic, things are picking up as pandemic restrictions ease, noting it is like an “echo pandemic.”

“If you can imagine a wave coming in and pulling back out, we’re starting to get the water coming back at us,” he said.

Municipalities with a projected increase in call volumes include Amherstburg, Kingsville, Lakeshore and LaSalle. Those with a projected decrease are Essex, Leamington, Tecumseh, Windsor and Pelee Island. Krauter said that is linked to growth in municipalities and the demographics in those areas.

“Although the projection indicates a continued decrease in volume through 2021, the five-year trend should be considered for future service delivery changes.

COVID has had vast impacts on the health care system,” Krauter stated in his report. “The 2018 ten-year Master Plan is continually referred to as the guiding document for planning.”

Ambulance off-load delays (AOD) and hospital volumes remain an issue, he noted. However, Krauter stated that Essex-Windsor EMS and local hospitals “made great strides in off-load delay management.” Ambulance off-load delay minutes declined in 2018 as well as 2019, with “a slight levelling” in the latter year.

“Over the past eight weeks WRH has experienced at steep increase in AOD’s.

This pressure has impacted EWEMS in a negative aspect,” Krauter added.

“EWEMS is experiencing spikes in call volume which are neither traditional or historical in nature. These spikes cause increased volumes in the hospitals at nontraditional times. Additionally, the hospital emergency departments are experi-

Strategies to mitigate off-load delays have included continued diversion strategies for low acuity patient cohorts, daily meetings between EWEMS and hospital leaders, and increased real-time communication between all parties to develop action plans as soon as possible.

Additional strategies from Essex-Windsor EMS to address any expected pressures have included scheduled up-staffing of additional ambulances as well as authorization of real-time up-staffing as pressure is realized, scheduling district chiefs during peak times and as needed, collaborating with hospitals when organizing transfers to outside the region and encouraging alternate models for transfers, such as private transport or ORNGE. “It must be understood that the current issues with offload delays and hospital capacities are not isolated to the Windsor-Essex region,” Krauter stated in his report. “Across the province, and Canada, the health care system experiences similar pressures. There are multiple factors that have led to the impacts, but at the forefront is the opening from COVID, the decreased primary care access over the past 18 months, the deferral of medical procedures and health human resource COVID fatigue and limitations.”

Fatigue is an issue as well with EWEMS, though Krauter pointed out the same can be said of other county departments.

“Plain and simple, staff are tired,” he said.

Across the health care sector, including Essex-Windsor EMS, Krauter said there have been increases in retirements and resignations.

Factors include people wanting to be closer to family, retiring early, other job opportunities, professional advancement or “deciding that ‘I just don’t want to do this anymore.’”

Two recruiting drives have been held in 2020-21, the chief stated.

“We’re in a third recruitment at this time,” said Krauter. “We’ve had less than historic results.”

That is attributed to a decreased number of college graduates and an increase intake of other services across the province.

Staff had not had adequate time off during the pandemic, while some have been isolated from family during that time. Constant donning and doffing of PPE and the various policy and rule changes have also had an impact, as has media coverage as Krauter said paramedics have to hear about COVID-19 both on and off the job. He noted they have been working regularly with CUPE to address staffing issues.

Krauter thanked his team at Essex-Windsor EMS and all county departments for its support during the pandemic. He also expressed gratitude for all community organizations that have helped along the way.

“We’re not out of the pandemic but we’re focused on getting there,” said Krauter.

Warden Gary McNamara said 2020 and 2021 have been “unprecedented years” and that social media has had an impact as well. He said he was proud of the work Essex-Windsor EMS is doing.

“It doesn’t go unnoticed the tremendous work being done by frontline workers,” he said. “Your leadership is second to none.”

Amherstburg Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche expressed concern over the amount of overtime and carryover provisions in place and wondered if there was enough staff. He said there is a “balance” between the educational component and the financial component and asked about getting more people into the system. Krauter noted he is on the program advisory committee at St. Clair College and they are looking at possibly going into high schools to try and get interested students.

“We are looking at how to get more people into the system,” the chief added.

Eight community gardens were planted last Friday at the Amherstburg Community Hub. Staff and volunteers from Amherstburg Community Services, the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society and The House Youth Centre helped plant the gardens.

New community gardens planted in Amherstburg

A group of local non-profit organizations joined Amherstburg town council members and the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) in planting eight new community gardens.

The gardens are in back of the Amherstburg Community Hub, specifically in behind the gymnasium at the former St. Bernard School site. The ACF presented a cheque for $12,000 to assist in offsetting the cost of the new gardens.

“We’re really excited to be able to support community investments like this,” said Chris Gibb, the ACF’s new president.

Volunteers and staff from local non-profit organizations such as The House Youth Centre, the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society and Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) helped plant the gardens last Friday morning.

Gibb said the donation was a “nice way” for their group to help others, noting there are also synergies among the groups involved to help each other. The town also placed a cistern at the site that will be used to help water the gardens.

“It’s exciting when a bunch of volunteer groups come together to show what can be achieved,” said Gibb.

Heidi Baillargeon, the town’s director of community and protective services, said a policy is being developed by the town to cover community gardens and how and by whom they can be planted. She noted that the food grown in the

gardens will benefit ACS and its programs which include the Amherstburg Food Bank and Meals on Wheels.

“There’s so many great synergies,” said Baillargeon.

Both Baillargeon and Mayor Aldo DiCarlo pointed out the work done by Bo O’Rourke-Caton, who helped write a grant that was successful in getting ten more accessible beds. Those are in transit and will join the eight beds already on site.

“It’s nice to have youth involved,” the mayor said, as he thanked O’RourkeCaton for his efforts.

O’Rourke-Caton is a member of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee.

DiCarlo also thanked the ACF for its donation.

“Their efforts are proving that their donations can lead to great things,” he said.

Other local non-profit groups haven’t been forgotten, the mayor pledged.

“The gardens produce will be used by ACS but we’re looking for ways to serve the needs of the (Amherstburg Food and Fellowship) Mission as well,” he stated.

O’Rourke-Caton was happy the grant request, which he wrote with the assistance of friend Lyndsay Trahan, was successful. He said they learned the $10,000 was approved in March after the grant request was originally written last fall.

“I got the idea from my mom and we came up with the idea for an accessible gardens,” he said.

Play Amherstburg hits the streets

The first of two installments of “Play Amherstburg” hit Richmond St. Sunday. The event was an initiative of the River Bookshop and the Dan Gemus Real Estate team with both business owners – Richard Peddie and Dan Gemus – doing it under the THRIVE Amherstburg umbrella as well. Peddie said data collected from last Sunday’s event and the one scheduled for Aug. 29 (weather permitting) will be part of a future presentation to town council. He said 114 interviews were conducted with people with 78 per cent of them being residents and the belief was that Play Amherstburg would drive more visitors if it was a regular feature. Over 430 children were counted as participating in the event. On a scale of 1-10, Open Air Weekends rated a 9.46, though Peddie noted one person did give it a one out of ten. Play Amherstburg rated a 9.37. Peddie added 99.1 per cent of survey respondents thought the town should budget for Play Amherstburg in 2022. The concept is that the River Bookshop and Dan Gemus Real Estate Team will pay for this year’s test runs with the goal of having it part of the town’s Open Air Weekends program in the future.
