Fort Malden re-opens, COVID-19 protocols in place By Ron Giofu One of Amherstburg’s historic treasures is now back open for business. Fort Malden National Historic Site opened for the 2021 season last Wednesday, albeit with COVID-19 restrictions. “We are really happy to be able to welcome visitors back to Fort Malden this year,” said Elizabeth LeBlanc, communications officer, Southwestern Ontario Field Unit with Parks Canada. “We have protocols in place so that staff and visitors can have a safe and fun experience.” LeBlanc pointed out that visitors will notice many of the buildings have been refurbished and updated thanks to a restoration project. Windows, roofs, paint, masonry cleaning and more have been upgraded so that the site can continue “to tell amazing stories for generations to come.” As of this point, the visitor experience at Fort Malden National Historic Site will have to occur outside, with buildings not being able to be accessed right now due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We have moved everything outside until we are ready to step forward in the (provincial) re-opening process,” she said. “Then we can open the build-

ings.” Visitors to Fort Malden will still get an opportunity to see what life was like in early Amherstburg, she added. A change visitors will see right now is the hours of operation, as the grounds will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., to match the hours of operation of Fort Malden. People can still use the grounds to walk and picnic at tables spaced out along the Detroit River waterfront, but the gates will open later and close earlier than some are used to. “It’s still here for visitors if they want to walk a little later in the morning,” said LeBlanc. The pathway connects Fort Malden to downtown Amherstburg, she added, and to the town’s military history. The picnic area is something LeBlanc said people are welcome to use now that the lockdown has passed. “We’re encouraging people to come out and make use of this gorgeous location,” she said. “You’d be hard pressed to find another location with a better view than this and a location that is this steeped in history.” The fort and waterfront pathway are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday for June, July, and August., she noted.
