June 27 Miracle makes its return th
By Ron Giofu
Volunteers were kept busy last Sunday gathering and sorting food as the June 27th Miracle made its return. The effort was across Windsor-Essex County with Amherstburg drop-off locations including Western Secondary School, Heritage Tire, G.L. Heritage Brewing Co., Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery and the Columbus Community Hall in McGregor. Numerous local businesses joined area residents in donating food with teams of volunteers picking up food on front porches while others headed to the drop-off locations. A final total on what was collected was not available at press time. Chloe DiPasquale and Kathy Meloche were June 27th Miracle captains in Amherstburg and were thankful to all businesses and residents who stepped up. DiPasquale said they had approximately 200 volunteers “on paper” and she added more just showed up to help. “We have had a lot of people who reached out but didn’t sign up to help us out,” she said. DiPasquale and Meloche were grateful to those who offered to help store the food, as the Libro Centre was unavailable this year as it is still a mass vaccination centre through Aug. 21. “This year, we didn’t have as much time to plan as last year,” said DiPasquale. “A lot of people donated space. We don’t have the arena this year but I think it’s coming together.” Donations of food will be spread out around the area with Amherstburg do-

chapter of the latter organizations. DiPasquale said Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo was a big help, as was CAO John Miceli, the latter helping to secure Western Secondary School as a drop-off location. The captains also thanked the town council members that showed up to help with other council members volunteering to help sort the donations this week. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, joined by son Vincent, said he came out to just lend a hand. “I’m here to help out like everyone else,” he said. “There are people in need. I think we learned from last year how many people need help.” The high volume of goods that were brought in last year have nearly all been given out and the mayor stated that was revealing to him. “It was a real eye-opener how many people were struggling,” he said. “We hope that this year’s event is a success.” DiCarlo added “we really want to thank all of the volunteers and everyone who donated. We’ll be helping out where it’s needed.” Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche helped lead efforts in McGregor with his daughter Andrea. “I decided to help out with the food drive again this year. My family has been involved for years now in food drives for local food banks,” said Meloche. “After the success of last year’s event, I thought it would be a great opportunity to build on that success.” Continued on Page 5
