“Coldest Night of the Year” surpasses goal By Ron Giofu

For the second straight year, Amherstburg’s Coldest Night of the Year event surpassed fundraising expectations. The event saw over 100 people walk the streets of Amherstburg in support of The House Youth Centre Saturday night with it starting and ending at the Amherstburg Community Hub, where The House is now located. As of Saturday night, the teams involved help raise over $50,000, which is about 170 per cent of their goal of $30,000. Natalyn Brouillard, program director with The House Youth Centre, stated last year’s event raised about 200 per cent of their goal - $40,000 total with an original goal of $20,000 – and was confident the same could be said of this year as people have until March 31 to make donations despite the event being held last Saturday evening. Brouillard thanked the crowd that assembled behind the hub before they headed out, a crowd that donned distinctive yellow toques as they headed west on Richmond St. before going on whichever length of route they chose. They wound their way back to the hub where they enjoyed chili that was prepared by the Amherstburg Firefighters Association. Approximately 175 people walked as part of the event, including some that opted to do so virtually. “I’m so overjoyed,” she told the group. “Thank you so much for being here. Thank you so much for supporting The House Youth Centre and thank you for supporting the Coldest Night of the Year.” The 2021 event was virtual but this year was the first time it was held in person. She said they wanted to “challenge the community a bit more” by increasing their fundraising target from $20,000 to $30,000 and she emphasized the community exceeded the targets. “2022 is looking good so far,” said Brouillard. Amy Bailey, a current board member and a person who also went through the House as a youth, not only thanked those in attendance but also Father John Ware, who started the youth centre to begin with. Walkers head down Richmond St. as part of Amherstburg’s Coldest Night of the Year. Over $50,000 has been raised to this point with donations being accepted until March 31. Proceeds benefit The House Youth Centre. After leaving the side of the Amherstburg Community Hub, the walkers participating in Amherstburg’s Coldest Night of the Year head down Victoria St. S. to Richmond St. and then they walked downtown. About 175 people participated.
