Open house on park proposals Thursday night By Ron Giofu

Those interested in the future of H. Murray Smith Centennial Park and Jack Purdie Park can provide their input in-person Thursday evening. An open house will be held March 24 at the Libro Centre from 5-7 p.m. where staff – including director of community and protective services Heidi Baillargeon, manager of parks and naturalized areas Annette Zahaluk, consultants from the firm Bezaire and Associates among others – will be on hand to speak with the public and answer questions. Baillargeon said the community room will be divided with the three H. Murray Smith Centennial Park proposals able to be viewed on one side of the room while the one proposal for Jack Purdie Park will be on the other side. People are welcome to come in anytime during those two

hours to view and discuss the concepts, she added. “It will be an open house,” she said. “It will be pretty informal. Our staff will be on hand to mingle with the public and answer questions. There will be comment sheets on the tables that people can fill out or take home.” A taped presentation will be made with Baillargeon stating she will outline the proposals. That will be posted online, likely at www.talktheburg.ca, and people can view it there in case they either want to see it again or were unable to attend the open house. “I’ll go over all of the designs, what is in each of the designs and why we put things where they are,” Baillargeon said of the video. The open house will have approximately 30 boards set up around the room detailing the proposals, she added.

The design for Jack Purdie Park will be more geared towards families while the H. Murray Smith Centennial Park proposals are “geared towards an older audience” which includes teenagers. “It will lend itself well to the high school and them using the park,” said Baillargeon. Two of the H. Murray Smith Centennial Park options feature a track while a third has more walking trails proposed along with a grass open space that could be used. There are also tennis/pickleball courts, other sports courts, the Russell Renaud Hill and other amenities proposed. There is also the proposal with the two-acre section in the northwest corner of the property – at the intersection of Richmond St. and Victoria St. S. – boxed out for possible sale. Baillargeon said public consultation will continue after Thursday’s open house until Amherstburg

town council makes a decision on whether or not to sell that two-acre portion. Once administration has a clear indication of the direction council wants to go with the two-acre site, Baillargeon said her team can prepare a final report to council which would take that direction as well as input from the public into consideration. It would then be presented at council, where Baillargeon stated further input could be provided from residents. “It’s almost like a third public consultations at council,” she said. “People can sign up and delegate at that meeting.” The date of that meeting is unknown at this stage, Baillargeon added, as administration and the public await the decision on the two-acre parcel. She did say that costing and how to pay for the implementation of the final concept would be provided, including whether it has to be phased in over time.

A touch o’the Irish Students from the Emerald Isle Dance Studio in Windsor, including some local residents, were at the Amherstburg Community Services office inside the Amherstburg Community Hub last Thursday for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. It was part of an event for seniors and when their lunch was completed, the seniors were entertained by the Irish dancing. For more photos from the event, please turn to Page 9.
