Support for Ukraine shown in Amherstburg

By Ron Giofu Support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people has been coming in from across the region and the world, including support in Amherstburg. In a show of support for Ukraine since the European nation was attacked by Russia, the Belle Vue Conservancy arranged for a Ukrainian flag to be flown outside the historic Belle Vue mansion on Dalhousie St. Father Tom Hrywna from St. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church helped raise the flag last Friday morning with several members of the conservancy on hand.

Belle Vue housed St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church from 1962-2000. “The support for Ukraine from the Windsor-Essex County community has been overwhelming in a good way,” said Father Hrywna. St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church was not just for the Amherstburg community, he added, but a church for the entire area and picnics and other events were held at Belle Vue during the church’s time there. “Belle Vue means a lot to the Ukrainian community in Windsor-Essex County,” said Father Hrywna. Many in the community of St. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church have memories of Belle

Vue, but also pointed out there are parishioners still with family and friends in Ukraine. “We have parishioners who had to flee after World War II,” he said. Father Hrywna added their homeland was attacked by its neighbour without provocation and to see people from around the world as well as the local area rally to their support has been a source of comfort for them. “It’s very emotional and very reassuring to see the Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians come together and support Ukraine,” he said.
