DiCarlo will not seek re-election By Ron Giofu When the new town council takes over Nov. 15, there will be a new person in the mayor’s chair. Aldo DiCarlo announced last Thursday that he will not be seeking re-election as Amherstburg’s mayor. DiCarlo was first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018 but a third term is not on the horizon. “It was obviously not an easy decision,” said DiCarlo. “It was a family decision. We didn’t come to it quickly or lightly.” The COVID-19 pandemic was a large factor in DiCarlo and his family arriving at the decision not to run again. For the first term, DiCarlo said the focus was largely on the town’s financial issues but during his second term, his political future kept coming into the back of his mind. The staffing turmoil at town hall was an issue for several months, but DiCarlo believes that has stabilized and is confident in the administrative team the town has hired. Continued on Page 4

Saying goodbye to Western Secondary School By Ron Giofu

Western Secondary School will close its doors in June, but its legacy will last much longer. The 51-year-old school held its closing celebration last Saturday afternoon and hundreds of people flowed through the hallways, cafeteria and classroom to look at the memorabilia, tour the place one last time, eat food prepared by Western students and reconnect with teachers and classmates they haven’t seen in years.

Lucas Langlois and Brandon Hornick went to school together and toured the building together last Saturday. Langlois graduated in 1994 while Hornick graduated in 1993. Hornick said he was able to reconnect with teachers and friends he hadn’t seen in years. The last time he was in the building was 27 years ago. Langlois added with recent demolitions at Duffy’s and Maria’s, he wondered what the fate would be for Western Secondary. Continued on Page 4
