Veterans honoured at Remembrance Day ceremony

By Ron Giofu Remembrance Day looked closer to normal this year as Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 once again led efforts to honour veterans. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced an abbreviated version of Remembrance Day ceremonies last year, this year saw the return of the parade and a full ceremony at the cenotaph in King’s Navy Yard Park. Most participants in the parade as well as those who attended both the parade and ceremony wore •

masks but otherwise it resembled a regular Remembrance Day. After two minutes of silence was observed and the reading of the names of the Amherstburg soldiers who died in battle were read, greetings were brought and the public was reminded of what Remembrance Day means. Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 president Laurie Cavanaugh pointed out that 2021 is the 100th anniversary of the poppy. She gave a brief history of the poppy and why it is important, with Legion member and ceremony emcee

Jeff Turner reading out a lengthy list of where the proceeds go. Organizations benefitting from poppy sales include numerous veteran organizations, bursaries, Quilts of Valour among others. Steven Hanratty, policy advisor and stakeholder relations with the office of Essex MP Chris Lewis, read a statement from Lewis that noted Nov. 11 is a day that reminds people of past sacrifices of veterans and the freedoms they now enjoy. Lewis’ statement also read that he “had the privilege of walking on the beaches of Normandy where many

lives were lost” and it is now a beach that welcomes tourists, showing it is a “picture of freedom” because of the service of those in World War II. Katrina Verbeek, who represented Essex MPP Taras Natyshak, said it was a day to remember and honour the brave Canadians who carried out their service in both wartime and peacetime. Natyshak’s message stated that he joins all Ontarians in paying tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Continued on Page 9
