By Ron Giofu A holiday tradition has officially started in Amherstburg for another year.

The River Lights Winter Festival got underway Saturday night as the municipal tree lighting ceremony was held and fireworks went off over the Detroit River. Light displays have returned to King’s Navy Yard Park and Toddy Jones Park with one of the new additions to the former being a large “Amherstburg” sign across the railing along the water.

The festivities Saturday night saw large crowds gather in the parkette to hear carollers, be welcomed by storyteller Shaymus Gunn as well as greetings from sponsors and dignitaries. The opening ceremony was the first one since 2019, as while light displays were lit last year, there were no events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

With pandemic restrictions slowly starting to ease, the municipal tree lighting ceremony made its return as did the public. However, once again this year, there is no gingerbread warming house in Toddy Jones Park.

“As we draw closer to the end of another difficult year, restarting events like this reminds me of just how much there is to be grateful for – our family, our friends and our community,” Mayor Aldo DiCarlo stated, as he addressed the crowd from the sleigh in the parkette. “I would like to thank the River Lights committee for their many years of service. They work tirelessly alongside our parks and tourism departments so that many families can enjoy all that our beautiful town has to offer during the winter season.”

Town council approves new footprint for Open Air Weekends

By Ron Giofu Open Air Weekends will likely be returning in 2022, barring any cutbacks at budget time.

Amherstburg town council approved a new footprint for next year’s event, with Dalhousie St. to be closed between Richmond St. and Murray St. and each Richmond St. and Murray St. to be closed from Ramsay St. to Dalhousie St. Two-way traffic will return on Dalhousie St. between Rankin Ave. and Richmond St. and from Gore St. to Murray St., but there will be no through traffic due to the block that will be closed.

Hours of operation will also change as the streets will be closed from Fridays at 3 p.m. to Sunday at 9 p.m. in May, June and September and to Sunday at 10 p.m. in July and August.

The estimated cost is $91,500 with the actual funding of the event deferred until 2022 budget deliberations.

Town council approved moving Open Air Weekends ahead in the new format via a 6-1 vote, with Councillor Peter Courtney being in opposition.

Councillor Don McArthur endorsed the new footprint, believing it is safer and is a good compromise. He stated he attended Open Air Weekends in the summer and attempted to work with businesses to find a middle ground, and believed this does that.

“It brings in parking spaces closer to (the event),” he said.

Open Air Weekends benefit the entire town, McArthur stated.

“It creates jobs, it puts Amherstburg on the map, and it gives us something to celebrate,” he said.

There were “growing pains” in the first two years, McArthur added, but he spoke in favour of the current format and presenting it every weekend.

time,” said McArthur. “I just can’t wait until we have people in 76 hotel rooms for two days instead of two hours.”

McArthur, chair of the economic development committee, added that group often looks for the “silver bullet” for the town but added “we’re sitting on a gold mine” with Open Air Weekends.

Councillor Michael Prue asked a series of questions, including wanting a cost analysis to run the event every weekend.

“I want to see costs. This is getting expensive,” said Prue.

Manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota said it was $5,000 per weekend.

Prue asked to extend the schedule another weekend in late September to include the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and that Indigenous Peoples be asked to participate and share their culture.

Rota said the tourism department is ready to write grants and pursue funding, with Prue also asking if any businesses who benefit from Open Air Weekends kicked in. Regarding the latter, Rota said little was collected from business owners.

“We didn’t get much,” she said. “It was hard to ask for even $50.”

Interim CAO Tony Haddad suggested that, in the absence of a BIA, that administration could explore a cost-sharing program if council so chooses.

Rota believed that if Amherstburg didn’t proceed with Open Air Weekends, the public would find places that do.

“They will go to Kingsville, they will go to Windsor,” she said. “They will go to other small municipalities.”

“For tourism to be successful, we have to have outside dollars,” added Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche. “There is some economic value that finds its way into municipal coffers. Amherstburg is a great location for day trips. I’d like to see (Open Air) grow, not shrink.”

Councillor Marc Renaud added Open Air is “an economic driver” and brings people to Amherstburg.

sures would be better saved for events like that.

Courtney also pointed out only 52 per cent of businesses surveyed by the town found their businesses benefitted.

He added it was started to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic but doing it annually will “change the dynamic of the downtown” and that events like Play Amherstburg can occur elsewhere.

“Here we are asking taxpayers to help a few (businesses) but we’re hurting others,” he said.

Some businesses have had to struggle through the pandemic and didn’t benefit from Open Air and believed closing the streets again every weekend next year is “a slap in the face” to those businesses.

“I’m trying to find a happy medium and this is not a happy medium,” said Courtney.

Rota countered that “it’s the bigger picture” that needs to be looked at. She agreed that some restaurants made a lot of money due to Open Air Weekends, but there were also cases of people buying gas while in town or groceries to picnic while here and that has to be factored in too.

Courtney wasn’t buying that argument, saying people were already coming to Amherstburg before the pandemic. Instead of closing streets, he said kids can play in a park or a cul-de-sac and streets should only be closed for festivals where there are multiple amenities, citing Canada Day and the Uncommon Festival.

“We’ve invested in tourism. It’s got to be strategic tourism,” said Courtney.

“I’m more concerned with some of the businesses that are struggling. Streets are for cars, sidewalks are for pedestrians and parks are for people to play in.”

Second tenant revealed for new Richmond St. building

By Ron Giofu The second of two tenants has been revealed for the commercial units at 63 Richmond St. White Woods Home, a kitchen and home décor business, will occupy the unit on the west side of the building, once the structure is complete. Esther Reaume, who will carry the title of retail director, will run the store and said she ran a similar shop in Windsor for 30 years.

“There are so many people I hear from all the time saying ‘I miss your store’,” she said Reaume said White Woods Home will carry kitchen essentials including various brand name appliances, as well as home décor, glassware, dishware, premium goods and more. There will also be environmentally-friendly materials and a lot of local products, she added.

“It will be a shopping experience you are going to get when you come to White Woods Home,” said Reaume. “We’ll support local as much as possible.”

There will likely be cooking demonstrations, product

demonstrations, partnerships with area wineries and other events.

“Things will be operational,” said Reaume. “Customers will have that experience.”

White Woods Home will have an online presence, she continued, and that they will also be available for bridal registry items.

Reaume said her personal philosophy is that shops and shoppers enhance neighbourhoods and that once a clientele is built up, they become acquaintances.

“You get to know who comes in your door,” she said. “It is a neighbourhood gathering place.”

Reaume and samples of her upcoming product lines are part of the River Bookshop’s “Christmas Marketplace” that is running weekends through Dec. 18-19.

White Woods Home is operating under the Black Dog Entertainment umbrella, a company owned by Richard and Colleen Peddie. Richard said when they first started planning the River Bookshop, they wanted to contribute to the economic, social and cultural

components of the town. While there was also philanthropic work being done, including involvement with the Amherstburg Community Foundation, Richard said “we thought we could do more.”

“Our strategy was to introduce retail stores that did not exist in town,” he said. “We wanted something not only residents would enjoy, but also to bring visitors to Amherstburg.”

The Peddies purchased the building at 248 Ramsay St. and redeveloped it into what is now The Panetteria, a new bakery being run by Simon Briggs and Anna Marano. They bought the building next door to the bookshop along Richmond St. and it will house not only White Woods Home, but also Evelyn’s Candy House and two two-storey apartments. Their most

recent purchase is the building at 256 Dalhousie St. The name “White Woods” is the English translation of Bois Blanc, which is also known as Boblo Island. Both the Peddies and Reaume live on the island.

“Not only does it not exist in Amherstburg, it doesn’t exist in the county,” said Richard. “Hopefully the catchment area of the store will be all of the county.”

There will be synergies between the businesses along that corner, indicating one will be use of the River Bookshop’s “Hole in the Wall” for White Woods Home events.

Misuse and abuse by some leads to punishment for all

As the old saying goes, one bad apple spoils the bunch.

It was more than just one person that caused the removal of the skateboard park equipment from the temporary site behind the Amherstburg Community Hub but it wasn’t all skateboarders.

Undoubtedly, there were many that used the park properly and for what it was intended.

Sadly, there were others that caused damage, disturbed neighbours and wreaked havoc during the skateboard park’s short lived tenure at the temporary location.

There were reports and allegations of youth getting on the roof damaging items there, bullying hub tenants, public urination, getting inside the building and hiding in bathrooms, and stealing

I know when I was a child, if I misbehaved, my toys were taken away. People at the skateboard park misbehaved and now their toys are gone. It’s too bad for those who were using the park for what it was intended, but when hub tenants and nearby residents have repeated issues, there was no other choice but to remove the equipment.

So, what’s next?

People are being asked to provide input on where the permanent location

of the skateboard park should go. There is a site at the Libro Centre that has been proposed, with it being near the electronic sign at the corner of Simcoe St. and Meloche Road. That site would be out in the open and not too close to any buildings that people could get into.

If the Libro Centre spot is deemed too far for some people to walk, I would suggest a location within the remaining 15 acres of Centennial Park. My preference would be to put it near the centre of the park, either on the space where the former AMA Arena once stood or somewhere close to that. For the same reasons it was removed from behind the Amherstburg Community Hub, I wouldn’t want it too close to any homes or buildings and certainly not near the front of the hub. It would have to be

in an area which has great visibility so people (including police, if necessary) can see what is going on.

Just my opinion, but I would exclude Jack Purdie Park because of the proximity to homes in that residential subdivision. If other people think I’m wrong and believe this is a good location, then I respect that opinion as I don’t live near the park nor will I step on a skateboard unless I clumsily trip over one.

A permanent location should be decided on soon, however, so there is time for the kids who use this recreational amenity properly to have it once again. Between the loss of amenities and the inability to use what is still here due to pandemic restrictions, kids still need things to do.

Town council still need to do line-by-line budget review It was with interest to read the different approaches that council members and Mr. Haddad have on the 2022 budget approval process.

As for me, I was happy to read that council members want to do a detailed review of the budget and not just pass it as was suggested.

The council members were elected to represent the town taxpayers to ensure that labour, equipment, and material costs

are properly analyzed, and that money is well spent. I know from last year’s budget that this was not done in all cases.

For example, the town budget included $600,000 for a new grader machine since the current one was 20-years-old. I am sure that the CAO and his highly paid help did not make a cost comparison if it would be better to lease a grader or subcontract the work that this grader would do.

No, it was just accepted that the town needs a new one. This analysis should also be done in the future when it comes to replacing other equipment.

I suggest that Mr. Haddad does not take the easy road to accept the department’s budgets but investigates the details and questions department managers about their spending.

The CAO and all town employees work for the Amherstburg taxpayers and not

the other way that the taxpayers are here to pay for all that the departments want.

There are many examples of how money was wasted, and they are still in the budget.

So let the council do their job and hopefully, we will make progress in cutting costs and stop wasting our tax dollars.

The letter submitted to council and the Times concerning a permanent home for the Golden Age Club was certainly enlightening. Most of us knew of the circumstances around this issue, but Mrs. Thrasher has put the trials and tribulation endured by the club in chronological order.

Right from the beginning when they were duped into leaving the Community Centre building in Centennial Park, which was built and funded for their specific use, to finally the administration trying to make room for them in the Community Hub is an example of a quiet, polite group being taken advantage of.

My suggestion for a permanent location for the Club is the existing community centre building which was left vacant when Community Services relocated in the Community Hub. The only sticking point in using the building is that the administration had slated it for demolition to make way for affordable housing.

Now that there maybe new plans which may do away with the affordable housing in the park, the demolition should be revisited.

In my opinion this building would be a welcome addition to the park plan which includes walking paths, benches etc. because it fits into a park like setting.

The bonus is that the Golden Age Club will finally be back home!

In closing I would suggest that the idea of the demolition of the Community Services building be rescinded immediately before someone in administration decides to act unilaterally and tear it down.

Artisan Shoppe opens for 2021 season at the Gibson Gallery

By Ron Giofu A holiday tradition is now open at one of Amherstburg’s historic locations.

The Gibson Gallery is hosting its annual Artisan Shoppe, with the arts and crafts of local artists and artisans available for sale through Dec. 12. The event had been known as Holiday Art at the Gallery but changed its name in the last few years to reflect the fact the gallery already has an artisan shoppe all year long but during the holiday season it takes over the entire space.

“We’ve got probably a little more than 50 artists and artisans this year,” said office administrator Bonnie Deslippe. “They are from all over Essex County.”

There is a wide variety of media available at this year’s Artisan Shoppe, Deslippe pointed out, including paintings, pottery, wreaths, jewellery, t-shirts, glassware, books and more.

“Anything you find at Art by the River, you can find here,” she said. “We bill it as Art by the River indoors.”

The opening day was last Thursday and Deslippe said they had a solid turnout. She said she let people in before it opened and it was steady throughout the day.

“It was never crowded but someone was here all day,” said Deslippe. “It was a good start.”

The Artisan Shoppe serves two purposes, Deslippe continued, as it helps promote local artists and artisans and gives people a location to do some Christmas shopping.

“We always try to encourage people to support our local artists and artisans,” said Deslippe. “Our mandate is to promote the arts.”

The second purpose is the event acts as a fundraiser. The Gibson Gallery takes a commission from some of the sales while they get all of the revenue from the Wednesday craft guild. The latter makes gloves, scarfs and other knitted and crocheted goods and often donates them to causes around Amherstburg.

“They are continuously giving to the community,” said Deslippe.

As a whole, the Gibson Gallery’s year was once again impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A triumph for the gallery this year was the return of Art by the River, and even though it was modified this year due to the pandemic, it still proved to be successful. Deslippe pointed out the Gibson Gallery is funded through proceeds from events and dona-

tions, with Art by the River being the largest one of the year.

The Artisan Shoppe is available Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. COVID-19 protocols are being observed.

Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine OK’ed by Health Canada for kids 5-11

Health Canada has authorized the use of the PfizerBioNTech Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine in children 5 to 11 years of age with the announcement being made last Friday.

Calling it “a major milestone in Canada’s fight against COVID-19,” Health Canada stated this is the first COVID-19 vaccine authorized in Canada for use in this age group.

Health Canada states it received an application from Pfizer-BioNTech to expand the indication of Comirnaty Oct. 18. The vaccine was initially authorized for use in people 16 years of age and older Dec. 9, 2020, and subsequently authorized for children 12 to 15 years of age May 5.

According to a statement from Health Canada: “After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, the Department has determined that the benefits of this vaccine for children between 5 and 11 years of age outweigh the risks. Health Canada has authorized a two-dose regimen of 10 micrograms to be administered three weeks apart, which is a lower dose than the 30 micrograms two-dose regimen authorized for people 12 years of age and older.

The clinical trial showed that the immune response in children 5 to 11 years of age was comparable to the immune response in people 16 to 25 years of age. The vaccine was 90.7 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 in children 5 to 11 years of age and no serious side effects were identified.”

Health Canada states it has placed terms and conditions requiring Pfizer-BioNTech to continue providing information to Health Canada on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in this younger age group adding “Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to closely monitor the safety of this vaccine, and will take action if any safety concerns are identified.”

Health Canada has authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use in children ages 5-11. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says appointments can now be booked starting Thursday.

Canada’s approval of the pediatric Pfizer vaccine for ages five to 11 is encouraging news for the health and well-being of children across our province, especially as more people move indoors and attend family gatherings during the colder months this winter.”

Elliott added: “The federal government has provided assurances that we will receive enough doses to vaccinate all children aged five to 11. We are working with the federal government to confirm and finalize details on the specific timing of shipments, and we stand ready to begin distributing and administering doses as soon as they arrive. Over the coming days, parents will hear additional details from their local public health units. Vaccines will be available through familiar channels such as select doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies and school-based clinics.”

The provincial minister also stated that “public health units will continue to offer vaccines through successful mass vaccination clinics. Parents will be able to book appointments through the provincial online booking portal for mass vaccination sites, including school-based clinics in public health units using the provincial booking system, starting early next week once we have received final details from the federal government and can confirm allocations for each public health unit.”

“We understand that parents may have questions,” said Elliott. “That’s why we are working closely with public health units, children’s hospitals, children’s services and other health experts, including partnering with SickKids to allow for confidential, convenient and accessible vaccine consultation services for children, youth and their families. We are also working with Indigenous partners and community leaders to ensure equitable access to the vaccine. As of Monday, the WECHU stated: “As announced on Friday, children 5 to 11 years of age are now eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 (Comirnaty) vaccine in Canada. Locally, appointment slots at the Devonshire Mall mass vaccination clinic are now available with the first appointments taking place this Thursday morning.”

According to Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, the region’s Medical Officer of Health, expanding access to the vaccine for this younger age group will help the community to take the next step in its battle against COVID-19.

“In the past month alone, Windsor-Essex County has had 96 school cohort dismissals and 136 infections in school-aged children. Vaccination for this 5-11 age group is an integral part of the strategy to reduce the burden of disease on the community and will directly impact the potential for students to remain in school for in-person learning, and further limit the opportunity for this virus to spread,” he said.

WECHU CEO Nicole Dupuis acknowledges in the statement that there may be some apprehension amongst parents in getting their children vaccinated and strongly encourages anyone who has questions to seek help from reliable sources, like the health unit’s website or a healthcare provider.

“With the rigorous testing and approval processes required, parents have nothing to worry about. Any vaccine or medication has the potential for side-effects, however serious side effects after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, such as allergic reactions, are extremely rare and can be treated,” she said.

The health unit has added a new section to their website with further information and resources for young people and their parents to learn more about the vaccine, potential side effects, and a link to a free COVID-19 Vaccine Consult service from Sick Kids Hospital where parents can speak to a trained pediatric nurse in order to have their questions answered by a trusted professional.

Appointments are available now and can be booked by following the links on the health unit’s website (www.wechu.org) or by calling 226-773-2200.

The health unit states hose children who are newly eligible must be accompanied by their custodial parent or guardian to receive a vaccine and will be required to present a health card or other form of identification.

In addition to the mass vaccination clinic, all eligible groups are encouraged to contact participating pharmacies, healthcare providers, or to drop in to one of the community pop-up vaccination clinics to get their vaccine.

Founders Week YQG sees signature event held in Amherstburg

By Ron Giofu The first-ever Founders Week YQG took place recently with its signature event being held in Amherstburg.

Founders Week YQG, a combined effort between WEtech Alliance, the Windsor-Essex Small Business and Entrepreneurship Centre, EPICentre and the Genesis Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre, was largely presented virtually. The signature event, held a little over a week ago, was entitled “Failure Night” and brought a lineup of entrepreneurs to talk frankly about failures they have suffered in business “For many founders and entrepreneurs admitting failure in business is still somewhat of a taboo,” said Yvonne Pilon, president/CEO at WEtech Alliance. ”Unlike THE “f-word”, we don’t believe that ‘failure’ is a dirty word. In fact, we think it’s healthy and essential to learning and growing.”

“Failure Night” featured speakers in the “Hole in the Wall” event space over the River Bookshop and was streamed virtually. The event was moderated by Amherstburg resident and “Coffee with Crainer” podcast host Linden Crain.

Pilon said a lot is made about businesses successes, but not so much about the negative aspect of being in business.

“We wanted to flip it on its head and talk about failures,” she said. “We brought in six entrepreneurs from the region to talk about failures and lessons learned.”

The event brought together local founders and entrepreneurs to share their worst start-up and founder screw-ups, and the tales of how they survived and often thrived in the special virtual fireside chat.

There have been many sponsors and government ministries “who believe in the magic of River Lights and in the Town of Amherstburg,” the mayor continued, but said Enbridge has gone “above and beyond.” Enbridge has donated a combined total of over $100,000 to date, including $18,000 this year.

“We are so grateful to Enbridge,” DiCarlo continued. “Their contributions ensure that Amherstburg continues to shine bright year after year.”

Enbridge operates the Amherstburg Solar Farm on Concession 3 North and was represented Saturday night by plant manager Usman Bhatti and manager of stakeholder engagement Denise Heckbert.

“River Lights is an incredible festival and the town looks amazing, all lit up again this year,” said Bhatti, who was joined by his family.

Christmas events continue this weekend as the Windsor Parade Corporation brings the Santa Claus Parade back to town. After a “reverse” Santa Claus Parade was held in 2020, the regular format returns this year.

The parade starts at 6 p.m. from the area of William St. and Sandwich St. North. It will continue southbound on Sandwich St., before turning west

on Richmond St. and then north on Dalhousie St. where it will conclude at Toddy Jones Park. Traffic restrictions start at 3:30 p.m. with one-way traffic along Sandwich St. North between St. Arnaud St. and Texas Road with the entire parade route closed to regular traffic at 5:30 p.m.

“We are super excited to be coming back to Amherstburg this year. It has been awhile and we know how much the community loves their parades,” said Maggie Durocher of the Windsor Parade Corporation. “We have over 50 entries this year and the parade looks fantastic.”

The American bands do not have the vaccination rates they need to cross the border, she stated, but there are still a couple of bands planned for Saturday night “and a whole lot of spectacular entertainers on the street.”

“The Windsor Parade Corporation will be debuting their new Float the Island of Misfit toys which is really a lovely float full of imagination,” she said. “This year, owing to the fact that bands are difficult to get, we made

the Theme the Music of Christmas so watch for lots of music as part of the parade.”

Durocher stated TC’Z Dance studio will also be joining the parade and she said they are a really exciting dance group that has won the honor of best entry in the Windsor Parade in previous years.

“The Fire Guy has a whole new look to his routine so watch for him on the route as well,” Durocher added. “Like all of our parades, St. Vincent De Paul Society will be on the route collecting non-perishable food items, and it is important that we think of those in need at this time of year.

WECHU wants Ontario government to make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for students

By Ron Giofu The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is calling on the province to add COVID-19 vaccines to the list of required vaccines that students have to get under the Immunization of School Pupils Act. While students have to get a series of vaccinations before they can enter school, the WECHU wants COVID-19 vaccines added to that list.

“Certainly we would have liked to have gone into the school year with this in place,” said WECHU CEO Nicole Dupuis. “We think it’s the right step.”

Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, acting medical officer of health, said the Immunization for School Pupils Act is “a very progressive piece of legislation.” The Act calls for students to get vaccinated against a number of diseases and virus but includes a “framework” for allowing medical or religious exemptions.

“If we want to get our community healthier and want to keep schools open, I think this is an appropriate balance to include the COVID-19 vaccine in the Immunization for School Pupils Act,” Dr. Nesathurai stated.

The motion was passed unanimously by the board of health during their virtual meeting last Thursday evening. On Friday, Health Canada approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11.

Dr. Nesathurai noted COVID-19 rates are increasing locally.

“The burden of COVID-19 is greater

now than it was a few weeks ago,” he said.

That impact is being felt in area schools.

He noted vaccination rates in WindsorEssex County have “room for improvement” especially among youth.

“We’ve dismissed over 450 groups of young people from school,” said Dr. Nesathurai. “The burden of COVID-19 among young people as it relates to case counts is high. These young people have been disproportionately impacted to the point where they have been excluded from school.”

Dr. Nesathurai said the health unit is seeing clusters of cases, and those clusters are being tied to other clusters. He indicated there are exposures being detected at schools and that has led to the virus being transmitted at recreational and sporting events and also being transmitted at social events such as parties.

“That’s troublesome from a qualitative point of view,” said Dr. Nesathurai.

Elderly people are also being impacted once again by COVID-19, he added, with that being attributed to, in part, waning immunity from the first two rounds of vaccinations.

The health unit is still monitoring the issue and are calling for vaccination rates to rise.

“Why are higher vaccination rates important?” he asked, then answering “people who are vaccinated are less likely to get sick, they are less likely to get infected, they are less likely to transmit the disease to other people, they are less likely to die.”

Dr. Nesathurai added “if vaccination rates increase and everything else stays as it is, we are more likely to be able to withdraw some public health measures.”

“The people being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19 are primarily unvaccinated,” he continued. “I think we have to consider every reasonable approach to approving vaccination rates.”

Even if a person has had COVID-19, Dr. Nesathurai also called for them to receive the vaccine as “an added level of protection” to the virus.

“What we want to do is get as many people vaccinated as we can to protect as many people as we can,” he said.

Gary McNamara, chair of the board of health and Essex County warden, said

there has been “a gradual upswing” in COVID-19 cases.

“Our message is we need to continue to be vigilant. We’re not even close to being over the hill. We’re still climbing,” said McNamara. “We’re nearing the summit but we’re not quite there yet.”

McNamara said public health restrictions may be easing, but people can’t let their guards down.

“If you don’t have to be in a group setting or area, it’s best that you don’t,” he said.

McNamara also cited cross-border activity, particularly in light of the upcoming U.S. Thanksgiving.

“We need to continue that education piece,” he said. “We have a ways to go.”

Public board agrees to allow staff to wear respirators if staff chooses to do so

By Ron Giofu After extensive debate at the most recent meeting of the Greater Essex County District School Board, it was agreed by public board trustees to allow teachers and other educational staff to wear respirators if they want to.

The motion was put forth by Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee Ron LeClair, with it reading that “education staff be permitted to obtain their own Health Canada-approved respirators, be permitted to wear these in the workplace, provided staff follow the application and removal guidelines stipulated by

the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) including providing their supervisor with written confirmation of a FIT test.”

LeClair pointed to headlines about Ontario’s seven-day average of COVID-19 positive cases continuing to rise.

“We’ve heard the term ‘another COVID winter.’ We’ve also heard about the acknowledgement this is an airborne issue,” said LeClair. “I brought this motion to provide support to our staff – a

staff that has worked very hard in a very difficult frontline environment and worked in a very professional manner to provide an education to our students despite their own concerns, anxiety and trepidation.”

LeClair added he has heard from staff they want the opportunity to provide enhanced personal protective equipment (PPE), noting other Ontario school boards have allowed that to happen. He noted that a respirator is superior to a mask.

“I do not believe this will result in any issues for our board, but it will send a clear message to our staff that we support them,” he added.

Teachers buy things for their students “all the time,” and this is a way for staff to support themselves, he continued.

LeClair added ideally the provincial government would step up to purchase such equipment but the motion shows the board backs its staff.

Trustee Linda Qin asked abut the current requirement for masks and how often they are worn with director of education stating this is a motion regarding staff, not students, but noted that students can bring their own masks from home. Chair Alicia Higgison asked about what risks the public board could face with superintendent of business Shelley Armstrong noting the board would not have any knowledge of the kind that it is.

evidence that it meets Health Canada’s requirements. We wouldn’t know if it’s approved for use of COVID or that the FIT testing has properly occurred.

There’s a couple of issues right there,” said Armstrong.

The board would be at risk of not complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act because of it’s equipment not having been issued by the board.

LeClair’s motion that was eventually passed was later amended and called for staff to be able wear a Health Canada approved 3M N-95 respirator.

Trustee Aimee Omstead asked if other school boards have passed similar motions, how are they in compliance with Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Labour and other guidelines.

“I’m not understanding how we cannot make this work at the Greater Essex County District School Board,” said Omstead.

Omstead added she understood administrators would have more work, but the virus is airborne “and we should be taking every step to protect ourselves.”

“I can’t understand how one board is making this work and others can’t,” she said.

Armstrong said administration isn’t saying respirators are bad, but her job is to help identify risks. She said Ministry of Labour representatives have identified bringing in equipment from the outside risks violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Omstead said this is “a complex is-

sue” but she believes “with every fibre of my body this has to occur.” She said chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam has stated multiple layers of protection are needed.

“I think every single step has to be taken to protect every person in the school, including children,” said Omstead. “I think we need to be proactive and not step back.”

Trustee Julia Burgess said some people want additional protection and voiced her support of the motion.

One of the list of speakers on the matter was Dr. Jane McArthur, and she has been doing research on COVID-19 and protection from it since March 2020. She said adequate ventilation and filtration are needed, and said “better masks must be part of a prevention strategy.”

“Approving better masks for staff, educators, and students is the right thing to do for the health safety of children, educators and staff and the community given the exponential spread that occurs. We need a layered approach to prevention,” she said.

The Greater Essex County District School Board also passed a second motion from LeClair stating “that the GECDSB write a letter to the Ministry of Education requesting approval of masking better than Level 2 and the Ministry fund this enhanced PPE for all staff and students.

Safe Families Windsor-Essex raises awareness and festive spirit at Christmas bazaar

Safe Families Windsor-Essex held a massive Christmas bazaar at the Lighthouse Church on King St., with a total of 26 vendors and dozens of volunteers hoping to raise both awareness and proceeds for struggling families in the community.

Baked goods were also provided by the staff, and prizes for the included raffle were donated by the affiliated vendors for the event, which was presented last Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

According to Joanne Fear, regional director of Safe Families Windsor-Essex, they are trying not to fundraise all the time. They are looking for monthly donors and people who sponsor children in different countries, and they are asking people to consider sponsoring children in our own communities. Fear stated only $50 a month allows them to support a single family. Safe Families Windsor-Essex is almost completely volunteer-run and there is minimal paid staff, she added. They are currently working with 29 families.

“Our mandate is to keep kids safe,” says Joanne Fear. “Nowadays, nothing happens unless something bad happens and why wait until something bad happens, when we can step in and stabilize before it gets to that point.”

Thanks to the success of the Christmas bazaar, both in funds and having the community come together, now a few more people know about Safe Families and their goal.

“The more people that know about us, the more families that can be helped,” says Fear. “If the people themselves don’t need help from us, they might know another family that needs help.”

Safe Families is looking forward to making the Christmas bazaar an annual event, possibly expanding into other holiday celebrations. Next year, they are hoping for more space, and thus more vendors.

“The community response has been good and we appreciate having brought some attention to what we do,” adds Fear. “A lot of people don’t know that we’re here and what we do and how we help families in crisis, so it has kind of been a bonus.”

Frattaroli nets three as Admirals win fourth straight Lakeshore comes to town Sunday

Sunday night at the Libro Centre, the hosts blasted the Petrolia Flyers 7-1 to win their fourth Provincial Junior Hockey League game in a row.

This one comes on the heels of a 4-1 topping of host Dresden Friday night and improves the Admirals West Stobbs Division record to 7-6-0-1 which they will take into Petrolia on Thursday night for a repeat against the Flyers.

“We are playing with confidence and getting more comfortable with our lines and our systems,” said Amherstburg head coach Paul Bortignon after Sunday’s win.

Despite the fact that the hosts peppered 19 shots at Flyers’ goalie Tyler Richardson, there was no score after the first period but that quickly changed as Brandon Salvati and Owen Papulkas gave Amherstburg a quick lead in the second. However, Petrolia’s Noah Harse made it a one-goal game.

Just 27 seconds later, and before Mike Farina could announce the Flyers’ tally, Matteo Frattaroli got his first of three on the night as he teamed with linemate Papulkas and captain Reid Stieler.

“That was the turning point of the game. (Josh) Courtney probably wanted that one back. When we got that one back it put his mind at ease,” said Bortignon of the lone goal that got past the Admirals’ rookie netminder.

Padding their lead, Amherstburg got goals in the second from veterans Tylor Frazer and Max Clifford and a beauty of a breakaway shorthanded marker by Frattaroli who rounded out the hat trick in the third with a set up by Colton Candido and defenceman Jadyn Brown.

In all, 15 Amherstburg players hit the scoresheet.

“We are doing a really good job getting pucks and people to the net. It’s nice to see a bunch of guys on the scoresheet and respond the way they did,” said Bortignon.

The third period on Sunday saw a few heated moments between the two clubs and Bortignon was pleased at how disciplined his team was and praised his leadership group.

Last Friday in Dresden, Salvati paced the Admirals with a goal and a pair of assists with singles from Clifford and the Player of the Game, Papulkas who had a pair. Nicholas Bolton who recently surpassed

2,000 career minutes in net, got the win and was about four minutes away from a shutout.

Following Thursday’s trip to Petrolia, the busy week continues for the Admirals as they travel to Wallaceburg Saturday to meet the Thunderhawks and get ready for a big one, back home on Sunday at 7 p.m. against the division leading Lakeshore Canadiens.

Bulldogs getting ready for their return to the ice

After more than 18 months away, the General Amherst Bulldogs boys hockey team is back on the ice.

The Bulldogs have returned to practice and were on the ice at the Libro Centre last Thursday afternoon preparing for their first game, which will be at home Nov. 30 against the visiting Kingsville Cavaliers.

“The kids are pretty excited,” said Bulldogs head coach Glen Holden.

Impaired charges laid after vehicle drives into wooded area A local man faces charges of impaired operation of a conveyance and operating a conveyance exceeding 80 mg of alcohol in 100 mL of blood after a crash last week.

The charges were laid following an accident last week where the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment say they were called to the 5500 block of Alma St. It is alleged that a vehicle had left the roadway, went over the ditch and ended up in a wooded area on the south side of the roadway. There were no injuries in the single-vehicle crash.

Police say the accused, a 28-year-old Amherstburg man, was arrested and charged following an investigation.

The alleged incident occurred took place Nov. 19 around 1:55 a.m.

Watch for farm equipment The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment responded to an accident Nov. 17 where a collision took place between a vehicle and a John Deere tractor. There were no injuries or charges but police are asking the public to be aware when farm vehicles are on the road as it is harvest season.

The crash took place around 7:35 a.m. that day near the intersection of Concession 5 North and Middle Side Road (County Road 10).

Break and enter Police are investigating a break, enter and theft that occurred to a home overnight Nov. 12-13. The home, located in the 3100 block of Middle Side Road, was reportedly entered sometime between 10 p.m. on Nov. 12 and 5 a.m. Nov. 13. Unknown suspects allegedly entered the house and outbuildings and took a quantity of tools and personal items.

Amherstburg Community Services partners with Royal LePage collecting Christmas donations

By Danica Skakavac Royal LePage Binder Real Estate hosted a Christmas donation event organized by the Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) wherein the community was able to drop off gifts at the Royal LePage office for other families to select from.

This year’s event was held last Saturday morning from 9 a.m.-12 noon.

ACS partnered up with Royal LePage last year, but unfortunately the Christmas gift drive was smaller due to the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, families are able to come into the building and actually pick out their own toys in person, instead of them being handed out through a window. Hundreds of families were served last year and hundreds of gifts were received as well.

The process of the gift drive takes about two to three weeks. ACS tries to reach out to families as soon as possible so that they can alleviate the stress about when and where the gifts are going to come from, and then they work their way down, step by step. Everything is

typically done by the second week of December.

Because ACS has other services such as their food back and the “Keep The Heat” program that helps people who are struggling in other areas as well, they reach out to them first. Then they will open it up to the general public for anyone who needs help. They plan on putting it in the newspaper for when people can swing by.

“Our outcome is to treat everyone with respect and dignity for all of our programs and one of them is taking that stress away from parent or parents, or grandparents or guardians, about how they’re going to put gifts under the tree,” says Kathy DiBartolomeo, executive director of ACS. “This year is extremely difficult, so we want to alleviate that stress and give everyone a wonderful holiday season.”

In regards to partnering with Royal LePage once again, DiBartolomeo says, “It’s a dream come true.

They also supported ACS with a $1,000 cheque to help us with our other programs and services, in addition to hosting the toy drive for us. It’s a great community partnership.”

Enbridge teams with community partners to help local families

Enbridge has once again stepped up to sponsor a project in Amherstburg.

Just weeks after formal recognition for sponsoring the new outdoor playground at Holiday Beach Conservation Area and the River Lights Winter Festival, Enbridge representatives Usman Bhatti and Denise Heckbert returned to officially kick off a project with the House Youth Centre. The words “great opportunity” were used frequently to describe the initiative, which will see local youth help purchase Christmas gifts for Amherstburg families in need.

According to House board member Sarah Van Grinsven, Enbridge is sponsoring the House Youth Centre’s community outreach program and is donating $5,000. Those proceeds will go towards the House’s five specific groups, which include Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 youth programs and the Embrace group.

Each group will be given a profile of two separate families to shop for this holiday season, with lists coming from Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) and the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission.

“The goal of this program is to not only spread holiday and community spirit but it is also an exercise in doing service for others,” Van Grinsven said in an e-mail. “At the House Youth Centre, we are helping today’s youth become the leaders of tomorrow and the service of others helps to build those leadership skills.”

Amy Bailey, another member of The House board, was also pleased The House members could find a new way to contribute to their community.

“This is really huge for us to be able to give back to the community,” said Bailey. “It really teaches valuable lessons about people who don’t have as much as we do.”

The House was planning Christmas events but Bailey said Van Grinsven, who is also a tourism co-ordinator in Amherstburg, had contacts with Enbridge and decided to reach out. The funding will allow The House to sponsor ten families.

“It’s going to be special to see young adults sponsor local families,” she said.

“This is a great opportunity Sarah presented us with,” said Enbridge’s manager of stakeholder engagement. “We like that we are able to help with young people and also with helping families. It’s a win-win to partner with them.”

Usman Bhatti, a plant manager with Enbridge, stated Enbridge “is proud to partner with several excellent organizations in Amherstburg as part of our commitment to being a good community partner in the areas where we operate.” He added the company is interested in assisting young people engage and participate in their communities.

“The House Youth Centre’s programming supports mental health by giving teens a place where they can feel comfortable to be themselves and by helping empower them to realize their potential as leaders and active community participants,” said Bhatti.

“This community outreach project provides an exciting opportunity to help support The House’s work, while also supporting families during this holiday season.”

ACS executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo said it was a good chance for them to stay involved with the community and help families in need in the process. She said they were approached by The House Youth Centre and were happy to step up.

“We liked the idea of young people shopping for families,” said DiBartolomeo. “I think it’s great opportunity and I wanted us to be part of it.”

ACS has data on who needs help from the various programs the non-profit agency already offers. She added it is one of many Christmas programs being offered by ACS, with some of the others being the Stuff a Stocking for Seniors initiative, the toy drive in partnership with Royal LePage Binder Realty and the Dec. 4 Breakfast with Santa event.

Mission president Tim McAllister said they were happy to be asked to take part.

“Anytime we can be part of anything like this, we are always excited,” said McAllister. “For the mission, we are grateful to be part of this event.”

McAllister said when he saw the e-mail from The House Youth Centre, they were pleased to be able to take part and thankful they were given the opportunity.

“We have to work together,” said McAllister.

Future Christmas programs for the mission also include the free Christmas Day dinner that is held annually.
