Scaring up donations for Food & Fellowship Mission By Ron Giofu A Halloween tradition has resumed in a neighbourhood in the Kingsbridge subdivision. and it carries a charitable twist again this year. The front yards of Ken and Karri-Lynn Grant at 440 McLellan Ave. and Derek and Heather Shank at 437 McLellan Ave. have been fully decorated in Halloween themes again this year with visitors invited to view the homes Thursday through Sunday evenings. The Grant home features “Damien’s Barbershop” featuring lights, sound, music and the return of the popular vomiting zombie. Across the street, the Shank home has an expanded version of their “CarnEvil” carnival themed display. Ken Grant said he started early when it came to getting the materials but worked right up until they made the displays open to the public last Friday in getting them ready. He said he was up until 2:30 a.m. Friday getting things ready for that night’s opening and even made a few repairs and alterations to ensure things were running just right. “There’s more moving parts this year than there have been in the past,” said Grant. Interest in the displays was seen prior to them being completed, he added, as people from the neighbourhood would come by to see how progress was coming. “A lot of kids are excited,” he said. “A lot of parents say they are excited too. It makes me happy to hear that. A lot of kids go by every night to watch everything go up.” Grant said his family have lived in their McLellan Ave. home for 17 years and he estimates he has been doing it from the time period they moved in. “It started out small,” he said. “Over the years, it has gotten much bigger. The ideas get bigger. Everything has snowballed.” The two families added the charitable component years ago and now welcome non-perishable food items to be donated to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission. Grant said they set records every year and hope to top themselves again in 2021.
Halloween displays are back at the homes of Ken (pictured above) and Karri-Lynn Grant as they have “Damien’s Barbershop” set up in their front yard at 440 McLellan Ave. Neighbours Derek and Heather Shank at 437 McLellan Ave. have an expanded version of their “CarnEvil” display up as well (right). People can stop by Thursdays from dusk-9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from dusk-10 p.m. and Sundays from dusk-9 p.m. Donations to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission are welcome.
