Local GECDSB students to attend North Star High School By Ron Giofu
The new public high school finally has a name. Trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) voted unanimously in favour of calling the building North Star High School after 11 minutes of discussing the matter. The motion was put forth by Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee Ron LeClair, who also chaired the school naming committee. The new high school will bring together the students and staff of General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School and the projected opening date is •
community, a new school that will be the envy of many other communities,” said LeClair. LeClair recalled General Amherst High School being shared twice over the years with those situations including when it was shared by Sandwich Secondary School in the 1970’s and by St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School nearly 20 years later. He said the community “fought hard to keep a public high school” and said the new school “represents a significant commitment by this board to the Town of Amherstburg.”

September 2022. LeClair thanked the naming committee, noting “this was not an easy process,” but many school naming committees have found the process complicated. He also thanked “all the trustees that assisted along the way” as well as school board administration. A Friday night vehicle crash in Amherstburg is now being looked into by the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The crash took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of Howard Ave. (County Road 9). The road was temporarily closed between Almas St. and Texas Road. According to the SIU, they are investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious injury suffered by a man in a single-vehicle collision after a Windsor Police Service officer attempted to pull him over Friday night. Preliminary information released Saturday by the SIU suggests at approximately 8:30 p.m. on October 22, an off-duty Windsor Police Service officer saw a driver operating a pickup truck erratically in the area of Huron Church Road at Cabana Road in LaSalle and called it in. An on-duty police officer then spotted the vehicle on Howard Ave. and attempted to pull the driver over, the SIU continued. The SIU states the information also alleges the driver exited the truck in the area of Howard Ave. and Alma St. in Amherstburg and the vehicle hit a pole. The man was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a serious injury, the SIU further stated, adding two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
