Fall Harvest Concert hosted by AMA Sportsmen Association

By Ron Giofu The AMA Sportsmen’s Association was able to return to hosting a major event on the weekend and raised money for a local cause at the same time.

“We’re having the first AMA Fall Harvest Concert,” explained president Rod Ferriss. “It’s a fundraiser for the Malden Firefighters Association and their restoration project.”

After an estimated six months worth of planning, the outdoor concert was held last Saturday evening.

It wasn’t a sellout, but organizers with the club were satisfied with the attendance nonetheless.

“We had 450 tickets. I expect about 300 (people),” said Ferriss. “It’s our first kick at the can. With COVID, perhaps people are holding back.”

Sportsmen’s Association’s patio while others brought their own lawn chairs and lined a covered area near the rear of the club’s property.

“I’m hoping we have some sales at the door,” said Ferriss.

“We got lucky with the weather today,” added board member Tom Mailloux.

Councillor calls for no reference to Jeffrey Amherst in new school name

By Ron Giofu At least one Amherstburg council member would rather the new public high school carry a fresh, new name with no reference to Lord Jeffrey Amherst whatsoever.

Councillor Don McArthur addressed the issue at Monday night’s town council meeting after the words “Amherstburg High School” were discovered on the new building earlier in the day. McArthur called for cooler heads to prevail but believed the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) should have stated in the beginning it would not accept a new name with Amherstburg in the title so that the naming committee and board could have started out with that knowledge.

The process has undergone “fits and starts,” McArthur added, but believed if the board had stated from the beginning that the town’s name would not be in the school name, it could have resulted in a smoother process.

“I would just like to encourage the school board and the naming committee to work with the populations of General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School to get this issue back on the table,” he said.

McArthur said he preferred if the new school would have a new name, free of any Jeffrey Amherst references, stating Jeffrey Amherst advocated genocide against the Indigenous population in the 1700s. The councillor did say he opposed changing the name of the town, noting residents have made it a beautiful and inclusive community.

“I don’t think we should change the name of the town,” he said, adding people “have made it their own” despite the man for whom it was named.

With Thursday being National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, McArthur believed it is a time to consider a new name for the school. McArthur said he had the “utmost respect” for the people on the naming committee but believed it was a chance to take a step towards reconciliation.

“It’s the perfect opportunity for a new name,” he said.

“This is a tough issue for the town,” Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said. “We’ve got residents contacting us from both sides. At the end of the day, it is a school board decision.”

DiCarlo hopes the GECDSB deals with the issue soon.

“I would say we are anxiously awaiting what they position is going to be,” said DiCarlo.

As reported in the River Town Times, a third meeting of the Amherstburg School Naming Committee failed to come up with a name with the dividing point being whether to name it Amherstburg District High School or something else, with advocates of the latter citing Jeffrey Amherst’s background. Amherstburg/ LaSalle trustee Ron LeClair said he wants to step down as chair but remain on the committee over what he feels are false accusations he has an agenda in the matter.

The latest naming committee meeting saw four guest speakers address the matter but advocates of those wanting Amherstburg in the title argued they were unaware of guest speakers being invited and wanted to have their own speakers. Proponents of Amherstburg District High School point out that every other public high school in Essex County carries the name of the municipality it is in.

Ferriss said they “are going to see how it goes” and bring it to the club’s membership about possibly doing something similar next year.

Two years ago, the AMA Sportsmen’s Association was planning a large concert with a promoter and several bands. That plan got scrapped due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ferriss added his goal would see a music festival happen over two days at the club.

“We’ll see how this goes,” he stated. “We’ll get feedback from the membership and see how we go forward.”

Last Saturday evening’s event was volunteer-run, Mailloux noted, with members of the Malden Firefighters Association cooking hamburgers, hot dogs and fries.

Ferriss said the AMA Sportsmen’s Association is thankful for those who have donated to their bottle drive as well as for those who have supported their fish fries.

They plan to continue hosting fish fries the first Friday evening of every month with prices for the Oct. 1 fish fry being $15 for chicken and $20 for pickerel. Hours are 4-6 and calling in advance is encouraged.

The Malden Firefighters Association is continuing to raise money towards the restoration of a 1946 fire truck as well as the fire hall, the latter being currently stationed next to the “Little White Church” on County Road 20 at the end of Howard Ave. Dave Varney, who is on the Malden Firefighters Association (MFA) executive, said they were doing well at Saturday’s event but need to raise more money to accomplish their goals.

“COVID-19 has been pretty hard on us as we try to raise funds,” he said.

Varney said they need to raise approximately $100,000 overall but they nearly have the fire hall finished. Then they will work on the vintage fire truck. He said they have “nowhere near enough” to complete those tasks right now, but they plan on continuing to fundraise as best they can.

The AMA Sportsmen’s Association approached the firefighters, Varney added, as some club members are retired firefighters. The MFA was appreciative of the offer and took the club up on it.

“We’ll do anything we can to raise any kind of funds,” said Varney. “It’s tough for any kind of service group right now.”

Town council requests renderings before making decision on Boblo Island lighting

Amherstburg town council is wanting to look at renderings of how lighting would look like on the south end of Boblo Island before making a decision on a street lighting request by the developers.

A report from the town’s manager of engineering Todd Hewitt recommended the denial of Amico’s request, which would see streetlights only at intersections, sharp curves and wildlife crossings illuminated. Cindy Prince, vice president of properties with Amico, noted the company’s desire to create a resort development in an environmental setting.

Hewitt said the development agreement for the south end of Boblo Island was authorized by council Nov. 12, 2019 and the street lighting portion states “The Developer shall install streetlights in accordance with the present design standards, all to be approved by the Town of Amherstburg. The Town requires the installation of LED fixtures.”

“Infrastructure Services does not support the request for reduced streetlighting.

Although we appreciate the developer’s desire to create a ‘resort setting’ the infrastructure will be accepted by the Town once the development is complete. Approving a deviation from the development manual for reduced streetlighting could expose the Town to additional risk and liability,” Hewitt stated in his report.

The development manual was approved by council in 2009.

According to a letter from Amico senior engineer Robert Filipov, “While the Development Manual provides that street lighting is required for development, it does not differentiate the development type (urban, suburban or rural). We have maintained that the development on Boblo Island is not a typical urban residential development as described in the Development Manual. In the north end no street lighting is provided where a suburban cross section was used. The urban (curbed) section also does not have street lighting except for Riverwalk Crescent. The zoning for the island is “Resort Residential” which implies that the roadways would be suburban in style (no curbs but roadside swales) with a rural/vacation spot setting”.

The letter also stated: “We are not implying no street lighting is warranted but a reduced standard should be applied using engineering judgement. There are examples of recently constructed multi-use paths that are contiguous with the roadway in rural / urban settings with street lighting, notably Meloche Road from Alma Street to Simcoe Street. However, there are examples along County Roads that do not have street lighting excepting intersections, notably Huron Church Line Road (County Road 7) from Laurier Parkway to Broderick Road.”

Councillor Michael Prue, who lives on the north end of the island, pointed out a portion of the report which stated a reason for reduced lighting is to provide similar lighting to the north end. Prue believed lighting is poor on the north end to the point where residents light up their own properties. He used the example of one resident having upwards of 50 lights on his property.

Prince acknowledged Prue had a point, but asked “how much is too much” and believed the 70-90 light standards that would be required under the development model would make the south end “look like a runway,” an analogy Prue had also used about the property on the north end.

Amico has made considerable investment in protecting species such as snakes, Prince added, and too much lighting would “undermine” the company’s efforts to protect them. She said snakes may come out and be harmed if there was too much light and thought it was daytime.

“I’m not buying the argument about the snakes,” countered Prue. “Snakes are not nocturnal.”

Prue did say there are other nocturnal species on the island and suggested possibly reducing the wattage of the lights. Hewitt said that was possible, but more streetlights would be needed in that scenario. Conversely, higher wattages could mean fewer light standards.

Councillor Don McArthur questioned if there was a trip and fall or any sort of accident where reduced lighting could be blamed, if the town could face the risk of a lawsuit. Hewitt noted that is a concern of infrastructure services. Prince suggested putting something on title for property owners advising them of the natural environment setting they are buying into, but McArthur added those would still become town roads and the town could still face issues of a visitor to the island fell.

“I don’t think putting it on title protects the town,” he said.

The freighter “Manitoulin” drops off another load of stone on Boblo Island last Saturday evening for the development of the island’s south end. A lighting request put forth for the new development is not being recommended by town administration, though council wants to see renderings of what is being proposed by the developers versus what is called for under Amherstburg’s development manual.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said he has fielded concerns over too much lighting and said the last thing the town wants to do is to put up 90 light standards and create a “greenhouse effect” on that end of the island. McArthur didn’t think that would happen, as he said the administrative report calls for nothing more than a standard subdivision.

“We are asking to put in sufficient lighting to meet the regulations,” said McArthur.

Councillor Patricia Simone suggested getting renderings to compare what Amico is proposing versus what streetlighting would look like based on what the town’s development manual looks for. Prince indicated they could work with Hewitt and provide that information.

Choose the road where everyone wins

In 2021, it has become trendy to view social issues in binary terms – we are either on one side or the other; one side must win, and the other must lose. Take for example the controversy currently unfolding over the renaming of Amherstburg’s new high school.

On one hand, we have a concerned and frustrated minority who do not feel that it is appropriate to continue honoring the name of a man who they see as instrumental in violently dismantling their culture. On the other hand, we have a sizable majority of people who are outraged at being publicly shamed for their lifelong pride in their town, a pride which exists independent of the actions of a man who died over 200 years ago.

Perhaps, instead of giving over to the powerful allure of entrenching ourselves in one camp or the other, it might be more sensible to proceed in a manner which seeks to unite these disparate perspectives.

To begin with, the feelings and concerns of those opposed to naming a school after Lord Amherst are obviously valid. It is not irrational to live as a member of the minority culture and feel a sense of disenfranchisement when the majority culture came about through the conquering of your ancestors.

At the same time, to those who view the name Amherst as anathema, consider the perspective that for many, the name “Amherst” exists independent of the historical figure’s worst actions. Amherstburg and General Amherst High School evoke feelings of pride, community, safety and comfort in the hearts of many who call this town home.

We do not find the path forward by denying either of these realities. When considering the options of “the name must go!” or “the name must stay!” it seems that there is a third course of action which could relieve all concerned parties. For those of us who are connected to the name of Amherstburg, let us keep the name of the historic town, while for those of us whose culture has been historically overlooked, let us remedy that by building more monuments to the great people of the cultures that first settled these lands.

Consider the statue of Tecumseh and Isaac Brock in Windsor’s Sandwich roundabout.

It is with enormous pride that most of us look upon that piece of art, which honors the greatness of two cultures and traditions we have the privilege of descending from. Amherstburg has not only the space to erect such monuments, but an obvious willingness from the people in the town to do so.

This does not have to be a binary issue. It is certainly within our power to choose the road where everyone wins. Why not take that step? With respect, —Armand Anderson , Amherstburg

Reader has her own ideas on future of current General Amherst High School building What shall we do with the old General Amherst High School is a question many are asking.

Let’s put our creativity together and re-purpose this building to be put to good use, as many towns do. If you visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, Goderich, Stratford and so many more, they embrace their heritage and make these buildings useful.

If we want tourism to flourish, we need to create things to do, not just festivals, but year-round activities.

Perhaps use the mural side on Laird Ave. as a live theatre. Have a community centre to make use of the several gymnasiums to rent to host groups of all ages to play volleyball, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, etc. as well as tournaments, weekly groups and lessons.

Use the library as a meeting room. Re-locate our town hall and the fire hall expand in the current place.

Don’t let developers come in and demolish another heritage building in a town that has and can have so much to offer. If we are a heritage town, we need to focus on that.

Let’s make Amherstburg a destination for people to visit!

Community member presses for reconciliation through new name for high school

“I am confident in the process of naming the new school and I look forward to the Greater Essex County District School Board and the community taking this opportunity to help move towards reconciliation,” she said.

The board of trustees received her comments with no further action. A future meeting of the Amherstburg School Naming Committee is expected to be called at some point in the future, but a date for a fourth meeting to decide the school name has not been publicly announced.

A local resident has spoken out about the new name for the public high school being built in Amherstburg. Margaret Hawkins called for references to Jeffrey Amherst “cease in any new ventures” including the name of the public high school. By Ron Giofu An Amherstburg resident appeared virtually before the Greater Essex County District School Board last week hoping the new name for the public high school puts the area on a path to reconciliation.

Margaret Hawkins, who is a staff member with the public board, noted she was speaking as an Amherstburg resident and called for the name to not refer to the name “Amherst” any longer.

“Twenty years ago, my husband and I chose Amherstburg as the place to raise our family,” she said. “My children have flourished and grown into young adults that I am immensely proud of. We, of course, did not raise them alone, we raised them as part of a community. A community that we have grown to love.”

Hawkins stated her children’s experiences at Anderdon Public School and General Amherst High School helped “mold them into the caring and responsible people they are today.” She told trustees last Tuesday night that over the previous weekend, it came to her attention that members of her community were being called to defend the name of their high school.

“Through social media a call went out for people to contact the trustees and demand that the name Amherstburg High School be chosen for the new school,” said Hawkins. “Social media can be a terrific way to communicate and connect to others, however as we all know, it can also be a vehicle to spread misinformation. Clearly the person who created this post was trying to play on the emotions of former students.”

Hawkins added “as in many small towns, the high school is often the heart of the community, our town is no different.”

“With a new building to replace the aging school and to accommodate the merger of General Amherst and Western it was with great excitement and optimism that many people in the community were looking forward to a new name as well. Upon learning the history of our town and high school’s name's sake, many people, including myself, were shocked and horrified,” she said. “Knowing now what we do about Jeffery Amherst and his role in the attempted genocide of the Indigenous population, we must all pledge to cease in using his name in any new ventures.”

Hawkins added she can and does empathize with community members who want to hold on to a name, saying that change is not always easy.

“My own high school, no longer exists, however, my memories, the friendships that started there and the learning that happened during those years will stay with me forever,” she told trustees. “The legacy of J.L. Forster continues to this day in the accomplishments and endeavors of the people who passed through those doors, just as the legacy of General Amherst High School will continue, no matter what the name of the new school is. Let us, as a community, not squander this opportunity to put the name Amherst into the past and do our part to help heal those who are still suffering the ongoing effects of the racist policies the Indigenous people have endured for centuries.”

The members of the new school naming committee do not speak for her or the entire community, Hawkins told trustees.

Liberal candidate Festeryga sheds light on pandemic election priorities

By Danica Skakavac The September 20 federal election re-elected not only Conservative candidate Chris Lewis, but also a minority government keeping Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in power.

Audrey Festeryga, the Liberal candidate in Essex, agrees that this was a very challenging election and, perhaps if the election had not been called so suddenly, her party and others may have been better prepared to run for the campaign.

Across the platforms, she believes the Liberal Liberal candidate Audrey Festeryga finished third in the Essex plan was the best for Canriding on election night but believes her party’s plan is best for Canada. Festeryga captured 10,813 votes, or 15.5 per cent of the ada and for Essex. It was overall total in Essex. “Read the plans – don’t look at the name on the plan, and decide what would work better,” advised Festeryga.

When going door to door, Festeryga asked her supporters what they were most concerned about and what they wanted to see the government take action towards.

She found that issues which mattered the most to everyone included affordable housing, the climate and a future for their children and grandchildren.

“I thank my supporters, I thank my volunteers, I thank everyone who took a lawn sign,” said Festeryga. “As a community, we need to take a look at what are we saying when we vote Conservative? As a community, what do we really want?”

From one candidate to another, she advises Lewis to be present and to let us in on what is going on, to communicate and cooperate with his constituents. Festeryga adds for Lewis to look at the platform that was elected and work towards that; work hand in glove with the government. He should not be obstructionist and put forward crazy pieces of legislation; that is not what Canadians want.

She also hopes Trudeau and the party will take a deep breath and work through all the issues and do what they committed to doing.

“It is possible to do these things, such as $10 a day daycare; the NDP are on board with that,” emphasized Festeryga. “In a minority government, you cannot just unilaterally say we have this mandate, we’re doing this. The process takes much longer.”

A long process, but one well worth it. Festeryga is excited for what this means for Canadians and Canada. She wants us all to ask: what is it that Essex, and Canada, needs and wants?

THRIVE Amherstburg conducts survey on Open Air Amherstburg

By Ron Giofu A local collective is undertaking its own research on the effectiveness of Open Air Amherstburg.

THRIVE Amherstburg recently undertook a survey asking residents both in Amherstburg and beyond what they thought of the initiative. This year, traffic is blocked off on Dalhousie St. from Rankin Ave. to just south of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 as well as on Murray St. and Richmond St. from Ramsay St. to Dalhousie St. Friday evenings, Saturday evenings and all day Sunday.

“We let it go for one week,” THRIVE Amherstburg co-founder Richard Peddie stated. “We figured if we got 200, that would be a lot.”

Peddie said as of last Wednesday, they had over 700 and he believed they could hit 800 by the time it closed. The survey was stopped last Thursday evening and while results are still being tabulated and analyzed, he was pleased with the level of feedback they had received.

“People are engaged with this,” he said.

Questions ranged from where people were from, whether the restricted access to some downtown parking spaces impacted them, if they were willing to see the Town of Amherstburg budget for it in 2022 and by how much, what did they like about it and what would they want added to it, if anything. Peddie pointed out most people were leaving comments, “comments that we will study for ideas.

Early data showed approximately 80 per cent of respondents are residents who pay taxes and vote while the remaining 20 per cent were non-residents who are potential tourists.

“Our methodology is solid,” he stated.

Peddie added they used a plug-in for Wordpress called Survey Maker.

“From the start, we said we were going to follow a disciplined approach,” he said. “We’re very interested in following the science.”

Once the data is compiled and analyzed, THRIVE Amherstburg plans to write a white paper they hope to present to town council in the fall. Peddie said the white paper will be sent to council at least one week prior to the meeting and also published on the group’s website so the public can read it. It will be one of three white papers they are planning for October, with the others being on heritage and climate change.

THRIVE Amherstburg hopes for seven more white papers in 2022, he added.

Peddie said the debate about Open Air Amherstburg has been focused on the businesses, which he said has had results split on whether the program be offered.

“Then it dawned on us,” said Peddie. “The streets belong to the people.”

The collective believed Open Air met three of its criteria which included international best practices, that COVID-19 science is clear that outside is safer and if it passes a professional survey with evidence-based data.

“A survey will never perfectly match what the population thinks but the larger number of respondents does make it more likely,” said Peddie.

Injured Lewis grateful for return trip to Ottawa as Essex MP

While the election results went the way Chris Lewis wanted, election day didn’t come without pain for him.

The “unforeseen circumstances” that resulted in him cancelling a Zoom call and not making any public comments aside from a written statement ended up being a fall from his horse. The Conservative MP for the riding of Essex suffered a broken foot, broken wrist, four broken ribs, a torn rotator cuff as well as scrapes and bruises.

"While waiting for the election outcome, I decided to take a break and go for a horseback ride with my wife, Allison, who needless to say, I have barely seen for the last 36 days,” said Lewis in a statement issued last Tuesday afternoon. “Unfortunately, my horse got skittish, bucked and I was thrown off. It was not the relaxing time with Allison I was hoping for and, of course, the timing could not have been worse.”

Lewis was able to grant interviews last Thursday and while in pain from his injuries, he felt good about the results. He noted the third day after suffering injuries is usually the worst, something he knows first-hand after falling from a ladder during the 2019 federal election campaign.

“It’s pretty hard not to be feeling good,” Lewis stated.

Lewis was first elected as Essex MP in 2019 and will be part of a Liberal minority government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. With all 255 polls now reporting, unofficial results show Lewis with 28,741 votes, up from the 28,126 he received two years ago. NDP candidate Tracey Ramsey had 22,269 this time around, down from the 23,350 in 2019.

Liberal candidate Audrey Festeryga received 10,778 votes in the Sept. 20 election, down from the 12,840 received in 2019. People’s Party of Canada Beth CharronRowberry finished with an unofficial total of 6,925 while Green Party candidate Nancy Pancheshan received 859 votes.

Christian Heritage Party candidate Jeremy Palko and independent candidate Andrew George had 182 and 172 votes respectively.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work my team did, including the staff and the volunteers,” said Lewis. “I can’t thank the voters in Essex enough for putting their trust in me to represent them at home and in Ottawa.”

Lewis said people didn’t want “an unnecessary election to the tune of $610 million” adding that voters want unity brought to Ottawa and work being done for the betterment of Canadians. He said he was proud of the Conservative Party’s plan, which he said would see the country not spend its way out of the COVID-19 pandemic but recognizes that people still need help.

“Communication is key,” he said. “You have to get to the doors, you’ve got to get on Zoom and you’ve got to be listening.”

As for his vote total, Lewis acknowledged his increase of 615 votes this election and that he broke his own record for highest vote total.

“This record, I share with my constituents,” said Lewis. “They are the ones who voted, stepped up and educated themselves,” he said. “I’m just blown away by the outpouring of support. It says we are on the right track.”

With the Conservatives being the Official Opposition, Lewis stated their role will be to create legislation and come up with ideas for the government to consider.

They will also be there to hold the Trudeau government to account, he added, but noted he wanted to see greater bipartisanship and co-operation.

“I don’t care what party you are – a good idea is a good idea,” he said.

Essex County and Windsor small businesses and manufacturers need help as do residents, the Conservative MP said, and he plans to continue working on that.

Going into election day, Lewis said he was positive, calling himself “a very optimistic person.” He noted his office has handled over 10,000 cases since the start of the pandemic and pointed out by being re-elected, there is no need to set up a new office and start from scratch.

“We’re ready to hit the ground running,” he said. “Folks need help. They need help right away. I’m looking forward to getting back to work.”

Lewis emphasized how thankful he was to get to serve the riding for another term as a Member of Parliament.

“This seat in Ottawa is not my seat, it’s your seat,” he said.

Windsor Regional Hospital updates public on vaccination policy for staff

Portion of Concession 3 North to be closed for several weeks

By RTT Staff A portion of Concession 3 North will be closed for over one month due to construction work.

Concession Road 3 N will be closed to through traffic between Alma Street and Texas Road, commencing today (September 29) to facilitate a culvert replacement. According to a press release issued by the Town of Amherstburg, this closure is expected to last until the beginning of November 2021.

Residents will be allowed access to their residences, the town states.

The town is reminding residents that during construction traffic disruptions may occur and some delays may be experienced. Please slow down, obey all traffic signage and watch for flag persons in the construction zone.

Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) has issued an update on its vaccination policy for staff, adding there is not a lot of wiggle room for those who don’t have a legitimate reason not to get the shot.

The hospital’s policy was unanimously passed by WRH’s Medical Advisory Committee Sept. 2, and was approved

by WRH’s board of directors the following day. The hospital says the policy “is part of a progressive plan to ensure that all employees, Professional Staff, Affiliates, volunteers, and students (“Staff”) are vaccinated against COVID-19, unless they have a valid exemption.”

WRH states the policy “is required to protect our patients, colleagues, and community and to support WRH’s ability to provide vital health care services to the Windsor-Essex region during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.”

WRH announced that 3,398, or 96 per cent of its employees, were fully vaccinated or have complied with the policy as of last Wednesday. Less than four per cent of the employees have not complied with the policy as of that date but president and CEO David Musyj noted there were staff that were still in the midst of getting their shots. Of these employees 84 are considered clinical staff and 56 are considered non-clinical staff.

“As we are talking now, we have staff getting shots,” he told media on a Zoom call last Wednesday. “Come Oct. 7. We expect that number to be lower.”

Also, the hospital states 534 or 99 per cent of its professional staff were fully vaccinated or have Sales Representative complied with the policy as of last week.

If those staff have not received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by Oct. 7, their employment will be terminated; or their privileges will be suspended on an immediate mid-term basis (with a recommendation going forward that their privileges be revoked/terminated) and the related by-law process will be followed.

“I am very proud of our Windsor Regional Hospital team leading by example for our community. All our WRH Board members unanimously supported the implementation of the WRH Vaccine Policy and also lead by example themselves on the importance of getting vaccinated,” stated WRH board chair Anthony Paniccia.

Paniccia told media members that arriving at a policy “was not an easy decision” but one that was supported throughout the system.

“It’s a science-based decision,” he said. “At the end of the day, (vaccination) is our only way out of this.”

Musyj urged both staff members and members of the public to not be a statistic. He said there have been instances of people being hospitalized with COVID-19 with them and loved ones wishing they received a vaccine.

“Don’t wait for that to happen,” he said.

Windsor Regional Hospital has to “lead by example,” he added, and they can’t do so if its own staff isn’t double vaccinated.

“We can’t cope with unvaccinated staff,” he said. “We can cope with vaccinated staff.”

“Our Windsor Regional Hospital professional staff leadership was unanimous in its recommendation of the WRH Vaccine Policy. The fact 99 per cent are complying with the policy evidences the front-line professional staff’s agreement that getting vaccinated coupled with following public health measures is how we will minimize the impact of this ongoing pandemic” stated Dr Wassim Saad, Chief of Staff, Windsor Regional Hospital said in a statement. “The tertiary and quaternary care Windsor Regional Hospital provides in addition to our immune compromised patients requires us to do all we can do to protect our patients and community.”

Dr. Saad said on the Zoom call that they offer the opportunity for staff to discuss their options and talk about the vaccines and their efficacy, with many choosing to get the shot afterward.

County, town approves National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid holiday for staff

Essex County council has approved the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid holiday for all county employees with the Town of Amherstburg doing so as well.

County council approved making Sept. 30 a paid holiday for staff, falling in line with legislation the federal government passed in June. The recommendation was approved during a virtual meeting of county council held last Wednesday evening.

A report from director of human resources Kristie Cronin: “Named the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30 is meant to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools where tens of thousands of First Nations children were taken from their families and forced to attend classes that separated them from their culture. The designation of this day is in response to one of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and is meant to honour survivors, their families, and communities. It also ensures the ongoing commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools will remain a vital part of the reconciliation process. This new designated paid holiday applies to federally regulated public and private sectors — specifically, the federal public service and employers subject to the Canada Labour Code.”

Cronin told council county the recommendation was presented for “several reasons” including that the need has never been greater to listen and learn about our history, the county can be a leader by recognizing this day, employees can attend community events and there is federal holiday language in collective agreements with the Teamsters and CUPE.

Sept. 30 will be recognized each year as a paid holiday for County of Essex employees, she noted.

Cronin also stated by declaring this a holiday for county employees, “we demonstrate a resounding commitment to the reconciliation process.”

It is anticipated that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will have an impact on the 2021 approved budget. It is expected that an unbudgeted net cost of approximately $150,000 will be incurred.

and would be funded by the Rate Stabilization Reserve if departmental deficits occur,” Cronin stated as part of her written report to county council.

The Town of Amherstburg will also be observing the holiday this Thursday. All town facilities will be closed due to the new holiday.

At Monday night's council meeting, council also agreed to light town hall orange for two weeks starting Sept. 30. During that same time period, the words "Every Child Matters" will be placed on the electronic signs at the north and south gateways.

Residents are also encouraged to wear orange this Thursday (Sept. 30) and also to tie an orange ribbon on their mailboxes or a tree on the front of their properties. Town staff will also receive training on Indigenous issues.

“A Little Uncommon Weekend” caps this year’s Open Air Weekends

By Ron Giofu The final Open Air Weekend was “a little uncommon” last weekend.

The town presented “A Little Uncommon Weekend” last Friday through Sunday with aerialists, musicians, scavenger hunts, “wacky” golf events, puppet shows and people dressed in their finest steampunk attire hitting the downtown streets of Amherstburg for three days.

James Mulholland and Natalie Bowering joined the Milne family – Jamie, Connor, Stephanie and Dennis – at the event. They came from the Kitchener and Cambridge areas to experience the scaled-down Amherstburg Uncommon Festival.

“This is awesome,” commented Connor.

“We were here about two years ago,” added Stephanie. “We looked forward to coming back this year.”

The Milne family and their guests estimated it took about two months to finalize their costumes.

“They are cool looking,” said Bowering.

Other than coming to Amherstburg, they have also travelled as far as Niagara-on-the-Lake for similar events.

The Milnes say they have been dressing in steampunk attire for approximately five years, while the others are in their first year of dressing up. Dennis stated it began as a Halloween costume one year and continued from there.

Arielle Pear, Dame Kathrynde Roet and Natalia Kozak from Windsor came in for the festival.

“We’re really enjoying it,” added Pear. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to step back in time.”

Roet said this was a chance to dress up and have fun.

“Everyone looks so nice,” she said.

Adding it was a chance to “learn both sides of history,” Roet stated “history is written by the winners.”

She added she will definitely come back to Amherstburg should the festival return for another year.

Danielle Meneguzzi from Windsor, dressed as “Cotton Candy the Dragon,” and her friend Natasha Von Bodenhausen, a.k.a. “Steampunk Girl” from Cottam, said they were hoping to come last year but were happy to be in attendance this year. They believed it was a fun environment and hope to return in future years as well.

“There’s something about it,” said Von Bodenhausen. “I love the atmosphere.”

They both said they enjoy dressing up and have travelled to Michigan for the Renaissance Festival in the past when COVID-19 public health conditions allowed for it.

“I used to do that a lot – dressing up over there,” she said. “The gears is what gets me.”

Sr. Cardinals plan changes for next year after playoff losses Woodslee wins league championship

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals were eliminated in two straight games in the Essex County Senior League playoffs and vow changes for the next baseball season.

The Cardinals had a difficult regular season, finishing with a 2-13 record, and went into the double-elimination playoff tournament last weekend hoping to pull off some upsets. However, they were unable to do so, and were sent home for the year after two games.

The playoffs started for Amherstburg last Friday night at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh. The Cardinals took on a good hitting Tecumseh Thunder senior team and ended up on the short end of a 7-4 final score. That put them behind the eight-ball heading into Saturday's action, which ended up being a 1:30 p.m. game in Leamington after times and opponents were switched three times.

Leamington built a 7-2 lead after three innings and never looked back. Mac Ouellette hit a solo home run to left field for Amherstburg to make it a 7-3 game in the top of the fourth inning but Leamington tacked on two in their half of that inning and added five more in the fifth inning, including a three-run home run to right field that made it 14-3 and ended the game at that point via the mercy rule.

“It was a rough game to start,” said Ouellette, who served as a player/coach for the Cardinals this season. “It was a rough weekend, to be honest. We were short guys again.”

Ouellette said the Cardinals plan to recruit in the off-season and add more talent to the roster in time for the 2022 baseball season. He said it doesn't matter if it is pitchers or position players, the Cardinals want to add more talent to the roster for next year. “This year was a struggle,” he said. “I think it was a rebuilding year for the next couple of years. It was a tough year but we would like to rebuild this off-season and start fresh next year.”

The double-elimination playoff tournament concluded Sunday in the Essex County Senior League with a full slate of games in Woodslee. As the field narrowed, all games were played at that diamond with the final result seeing the Woodslee Orioles winning the championship this season. They went undefeated on the weekend, including beating Harrow 12-0 in the final game.

Police issue safety reminders after reports of drivers passing stopped school buses The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment is issuing safety reminders in an effort to keep students safe as they get on and off the school bus.

Police say there have been problems with drivers passing school buses that are stopped with their lights on, with many of the incidents occurring on concession roads in rural areas of Amherstburg. Motorists are urged to know the rules and to stop when a bus has its flashing lights on and/or the stop arm sign is extended off the side of the bus.

On roads without a median, drivers must stop for a school bus when the stop arm sign is extended and/ or the lights are flashing. Motorists are encouraged to stop a safe distance, at least 10 metres, from the bus and let the youth cross safely in front. Drivers should not move forward until the lights are deactivated and the bus begins moving again.

On road with a median, police states that traffic in the opposite direction is not required to stop.

According to police, drivers that pass a school bus with its lights on and stop signs activated can be charged and, upon conviction, face fines ranging from $400-$1,000 and six demerit points. Each following offense could see drivers fined anywhere from $1,000-$4,000, lose six demerit points and face up to six months in jail.

Vehicle owners can also be charged if the driver passes a school bus, even if someone else is driving, police add.

Local business, artist team up on raffle draw

By RTT Staff An Amherstburg business has teamed up with a local artist in what has become a mutually beneficial relationship.

Terra Green Gardens, a nature-inspired boutique at 264 Dalhousie St., features many products that were created or inspired by local artists and artisans. Some of the items on display and for sale include handmade “COVID stress balls,” candles, decorative items, soap and other hygiene items, food items for both humans and pets alike, crafts and paintings among other items.

Owner Jodi McLean said a lot of local people have stepped forward to help get the business off the ground.

“Almost everyone is from Windsor-Essex County,” she said. “I like the vibe of the store. It’s really come together.”

The other people she works with are from around Ontario, McLean added.

McLean said she is glad to be open, as curbside delivery was difficult for her.

“It’s definitely the type of shop you have to be open for,” she said.

Although she tries to market her products via social media, McLean believes it is better for people to come in and view the shop personally to see what they have to offer.

“Now that we’re open, people can come in and take a look,” she stated.

One of the artists she works with is Amherstburg resident Joe Perz. “(Perz) popped in one day and said he does paintings,” said McLean. “It was really random.”

They have developed a relationship and Perz became one of the artists and artisans McLean works with.

“He’s got a good vibe about him. He’s super sweet,” she said. “I enjoy having his pieces in my shop.”

One of Perz’s more recent works, a painting entitled “Kolour Kelp,” is being raffled off with a customer getting one ballot for every purchase they make at the store until the end of the day Sept. 30..

Terra Green Gardens opened around the end of January, McLean stated, and she said they have been well received by the general public. The store is open currently from Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Despite being beaten, lots of positives for Admirals

By Fred Groves The Integrity Amherstburg Admirals may have come up short 4-2 Sunday night in the Provincial Junior Hockey League Stobbs Division (Junior ‘C) pre-season game against the visiting Lakeshore Canadiens, but despite the loss, the third straight for the locals, there are a few positive points to build on.

“I thought through the first two periods we were right there,” said Admirals’ head coach Paul Bortignon.

After the Canadiens jumped out into a quick 1-0 lead on a tally by Dylan Weston, Amherstburg’s Mattheo Frattaroli evened the count after 20 minutes. An Eric Chauvin goal gave the visitors a bit of a cushion, but the third period seemed to be the downfall of the Admirals as they were down 4-2 as Jake Nimmo scored a pair before Connor Demelo got one back for the Admirals.

“The biggest thing is, and it happened again tonight, in all our pre-season games is we come out great in the first period,” explained Bortignon, who acknowledged that his charges need to play 60 full minutes. “Part of it is conditioning and part of it is getting into compete mode.”

Amherstburg traveled to Essex on Tuesday night where they were hoping to pick up a win in their final pre-season contest against the 73’s. Just four days after that the Admirals will host the Wheatley Sharks in their home opener at the Libro Centre on Sunday night.

While Bortignon says a few more decisions on who will make the final roster were to come after Tuesday’s game against Essex, he and the rest of the teams in the nine-team West Stobbs division are still trying to overcome unforeseen circumstances as a result of the pandemic which wiped out last year’s season entirely.

“Tuesday is the point where we are down to the final spots and because of the COVID-19 vaccine we’ve got a few players not available.”

Dropping the third exhibition in as many starts might have some team’s questioning who they have or have not in the lineup, but Bortignon is hopeful that by the time the puck drops Sunday against the Sharks, the Admirals will be in season form.

“When we opened camp, we weren’t worried about our record in the pre-season,” he said.

While final roster spots will be made sometime this week, one thing is for certain, the Admirals have got a solid starting netminder in Nicholas Bolton. Despite the loss against the Canadiens, he turned away 43 shots and is expected to be the number one netminder when the regular season gets underway.

“Tonight, I thought he was great. He is going to be our calming factor,” said Bortignon.

SLAPSHOTS…A couple of pre-game jitters for organizers of Sunday’s game.

First off, the Canadiens don’t have their jerseys ready so when they came out in OHA blue sweaters, the host Admirals also in blue, had to dig out their white ones.

The refs were late getting to the game which delayed the opening puck drop.

Franco-Ontarian Day observed across region, including Amherstburg

By Ron Giofu Local municipalities celebrated the region’s French-language culture last week.

Franco-Ontarian Day is usually observed annually on Sept. 25, but as that date was a Saturday this year, celebrations occurred across Windsor-Essex County and beyond last Friday. Yasmine Joheir, community liaison officer with the Conseil Scolaire Viamonde and her colleague Hussein Kawas, who holds the same position with the Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence, were at the Amherstburg Municipal Building last Friday morning before making similar stops in Lakeshore and Kingsville.

Others within the two French-language school boards and others within the Francophone community were at other municipal buildings in the area. The County of Essex also raised the white and green flag outside the Essex County Civic Centre.

Kawas stated it is to show the importance of the French-language culture in Ontario.

“I’d like to see it all year long in every city in Ontario,” he said. “We are Canadians.

We are Ontarians. This is a recognition of who we are.”

Francophone culture has been in the Windsor-Essex County region for over 400 years, Kawas stated, which emphasizes why he believes it is so important.

Joheir added Franco-Ontarian Day is celebrated to show the contributions that have been made and continue to be made and demonstrates to students the importance of the culture.

“Canada is a bilingual country,” she pointed out. “The flag with white and green shows the presence of the Francophone settlements 400 years ago.”

Joheir believed the students have the right to ask for services in French and that the French-language should be continued to be observed and celebrated across Canada.

She stated that students as early as JK and SK learn about the importance of the culture and learn at an early age “about who we are as a Francophone culture.”

Tenders must be submitted in the prescribed form and must be accompanied by a deposit of at least 20 per cent of the tender amount, which deposit shall be made by way of a certified cheque/bank draft/ money order payable to the municipality (or board).

Except as follows, the municipality makes no representation regarding the title to, existing interests in favour of the Crown, environmental concerns or any other matters relating to the land(s) to be sold. Any existing Federal or Provincial Crown liens or executions will remain on title and may become the responsibility of the potential purchaser. Responsibility for ascertaining these matters rests with the potential purchasers.

This sale is governed by the Municipal Act, 2001 and the Municipal Tax Sales Rules made under that Act.
