Fight Like Mason Foundation raises flag in Amherstburg By Ron Giofu
To help raise awareness of childhood cancer, the Fight Like Mason Foundation has raised its flag in Amherstburg. The non-profit organization and the Town of Amherstburg combined on a brief flag raising ceremony last Thursday afternoon at the Libro Centre. For the month of September, the Fight Like Mason Foundation flag will fly alongside the Canadian flag and the Province of Ontario flag. The town had already issued a proclamation declaring September “Fight Like Mason Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in Amherstburg. Residents have been encouraged to learn about the need for further research and to extend their knowledge of childhood cancer and how it impacts children and their families. Victor Tolentino, a childhood cancer survivor, had the privilege of raising the flag during the ceremony. “It’s kind of a big honour,” said Tolentino. “Not everyone gets to do this kind of thing.” Tolentino, a 13-year-old Lakeshore resident, was joined by his family for the flag raising and said his cancer right now is in remission. He goes for checkups every six months, down from every three months, and said a bright side to having had cancer was the fact he is lucky enough to do such events. Tolentino just recently had another checkup to ensure the cancer had not returned, but noted he is feeling much better than he did while undergoing his treatments. The specific form of cancer was osteosarcoma, something his father Francis pointed out was similar to the cancer Terry Fox had. Tolentino’s cancer was in his shoulder but tests have come back clear, his mother Jo Anne said, since his final treatment in 2019. After being diagnosed at age 11, Tolentino said his treatments were rough and he didn’t feel well during them. “It was really difficult,” he said. “It was nauseating every day. It was like being on a roller coaster for 30 minutes a day. It was not good.”
